Love Language
October 2026 PUBLISHER
If food is your love language (I’ll raise my hand here, too) then this issue is definitely going to make you swoon. For months I have been hearing about “The Cheese Lady” Kathryn Holcomb. Her highly anticipated shop is set to open soon in Shoppers Haven Plaza. I have yet to meet a cheese I didn’t like, so for me this is a dream come true. She’s been working the farmers market scene until her grand opening and already has a loyal fan base. If you love cheese, you’ll love her article Say Cheese, Loveland. Speaking of fans, I have quite a few friends who love picking up meals from Project Lean Nation. Some are busy moms, while others work late and don’t have time to cook something from scratch. But both parties want a healthy, protein-packed, delicious meal. The best part is you can swing by and pick up a few meals or set up a monthly membership. Read Lean on Me to learn more. When it comes to slicing a creamy gouda or plating a delicious dinner for the family, you might dream about doing that in the kitchen John Hill Construction built in his newly constructed HOMEARAMA® home. Read Beyond the Showpiece, and you’ll see what I mean. Did you see that island? We hope you savor each article in this issue. Bon appétit!

Before a showhouse belongs to anyone, it belongs to possibility. Visitors wander its rooms and imagine their own lives unfolding inside. In the kitchen, that imagining comes to life: coffee at the island, dinner simmering on the stove, familiar voices drifting from the great room. Creating that feeling in a house built for strangers is no small feat. It was the challenge John Hill Construction embraced for their HOMEARAMA® debut. The Loveland-based builder joined a select group of companies constructing luxury homes side by side for the 63rd annual showcase. With each floor plan, finish, and trim detail open to comparison, the quality of each home is impossible to miss. “HOMEARAMA® is so cool,” says Ben Hill, the company’s owner and sales manager. “You have tons of builders building right next to each other, and it’s competitive and fun.” In that setting, he says, “The product is so evident.” Meaning the finished work speaks for itself. That philosophy predates HOMEARAMA®. “Everything we do is completely custom,” Ben says. “We’ve never built the same floor
plan twice.” Each project usually begins with the property and the people. This time, there was no family to provide a wish list. The team became their own client, combining the strongest ideas from decades of work. Ben revisited past projects, gathering layouts that lived well, welcoming exteriors, and memorable interiors. “It’s a combination of our entire team, where we listened to each other,” he says. JHC’s architect, Studer Residential Designs, then translated those ideas into a modern Craftsman farmhouse at The Estates at Bothe Farms, while their trusted craftspeople tackled finishing details. Inside, the “modern traditional” vision pairs enduring architecture with unexpected finishes. Built-ins, crown molding, tray ceilings, and intricate trim lend a sense of permanence. Yet the kitchen, at the center of the open main level, brings the vision into focus. More than a visual anchor, it’s where everyday life naturally comes together. It’s the clearest expression of the team’s belief that beauty should always make everyday living feel easier. CONTINUED >

The layout starts with these rituals of daily life. Morning light reaches the sink beneath the window, offering a quiet view of the peaceful landscape beyond. A generous island provides room to prepare dinner without turning away from family or guests. It can hold breakfast on an ordinary Tuesday, homework in the afternoon, and platters passed between friends and family on a crowded holiday. Across the room, the range hood creates the kitchen’s architectural centerpiece. Rather than treating the kitchen and great room as separate zones, the team aligned the hood with the fireplace, establishing a strong sightline between them. The decision evokes balance across the open level, and allows conversation to flow easily from one space to the next. Amish-built cabinetry offers the warmth and presence of finely crafted furniture. Instead of covering every wall with traditional upper cabinets, the design uses fewer wall

cabinets and generous expanses of glass. The restraint allows the kitchen to feel open and light, while carefully planned storage ensures beauty never comes at the expense of function. Some cabinets extend all the way to the countertop, a detail Ben sees homeowners using frequently because it places everyday items within easy reach. The cabinets feel substantial and tailored, almost like freestanding pieces designed specifically for the room. Their craftsmanship also reflects the relationships JHC has cultivated over decades, matching skilled specialists to each project’s needs. Quartz extends from the countertops to the backsplash, replacing busy transitions with a single seamless surface. The material brings durability to the hardest-working room in the house while giving the cabinetry a quiet backdrop. Layered accent lighting highlights the stone and glass after dark, shifting the kitchen from a bright workspace during the day to a warmer setting for dinner and conversation.
Of course, the room’s polished appearance is supported by what remains out of sight. A large walk-in pantry stores extra food, countertop appliances, and household staples, allowing the main kitchen to stay composed even during the beautiful disorder of real life. “For today’s homeowners,” Ben explains, “additional storage has become increasingly important, not simply for capacity, but for keeping the visible kitchen calm and uncluttered.” An under-counter microwave preserves the clean sight lines, while beautifully integrated, high-end appliances accommodate everything from hurried breakfasts to ambitious dinners. Each decision supports the same goal: a kitchen that performs without advertising every practical function. Nothing feels added simply because it’s fashionable; every feature earns its place through usefulness. “Truly, whatever the client wants, we can do it,” Ben offers. That flexibility is where the company’s remodeling experience becomes especially valuable. Years spent reworking kitchens have taught the team where daily frustrations hide — in poorly placed appliances,
“Everything feels big and grand, but nothing is too spread out. It looks like a house you want to live in.” inadequate storage, and layouts that separate the cook from everyone else. Here, those lessons informed a room that works quietly and intuitively. That planning extends throughout all 6,952 finished square feet. The five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath home remains connected rather than cavernous. A stepless garage entrance, first-floor owner’s suite, and curbless shower let it adapt as needs change. “Everything feels big and grand, but nothing is too spread out,” Ben says. “It looks like a house you want to live in.” For Ben, the finished home proves that grandeur and livability do not have to compete. Every room reflects the team that created it, but the kitchen best captures the vision: beautifully crafted, practical, and ready to serve as the heart of daily life for whomever gets to call it home. As any swim-taxi-driving-soccer-practice-chauffeuring-stretched-to-the-max-parent knows, it’s hard to drive past drive-thru temptation. After a long day of juggling deadlines and taking kids hither and yon, the last thing you want to add to your to-do list is to make dinner. After all, the drive-thru is right there with a meal that promises to make your kids happy. Over time, though, that can be a recipe for dietary disaster. But what if you could have highly nutritious, incredibly tasty, and completely effortless meals in minutes — hold the extra calories and wrappers in the backseat? Instead of leaning out your car window to grab a bag of fast food, you could swing by Project LeanNation at Harpers Station to stock up on chef-curated, ready-toeat meals designed especially for you and your family’s nutritional needs. It’s that easy. And that good. Opening this past April, Project LeanNation isn’t just for busy parents. And it definitely offers more than just healthy meals (but with both, boy, do they truly excel). At PLN, you’ll find a full menu of nutritional support. You can stop by and pick up a PLN meal à la carte, enjoy the grab-and-go goodness of healthy snacks, or get a protein shake freshly made from all-natural ingredients.
“OUR mission IS TO LOWER EVERYONE’S INDIVIDUAL BARRIER TO ACCESS nutritious FOOD … FOR SOME PEOPLE, THAT BARRIER IS CONVENIENCE. WHEN PEOPLE ASK, ‘WHO’S YOUR target MARKET?’ MY ANSWER IS PEOPLE WHO EAT FOOD. THIS IS FOR everyone.”

And it’s all served in a friendly, positive atmosphere where everyone’s welcome to come in, refuel, and reset. “When people ask, ‘Who’s your target market?’ my answer is people who eat food,” says co-owner Jill Strasser, who runs the store with her son Christopher “Dif” Strasser. “This is for everyone. Our mission is to lower everyone’s individual barrier to access nutritious food … and for some people, that barrier is convenience.”

COUNTING MACROS, NOT BIG MACS
As a mother of six, Jill knows what it’s like to be pulled in multiple directions. She’s had her share of shuttling kids around to a multitude of activities. Yet, over the years, a steadfast focus on health and nutrition has kept her firmly grounded. After discovering CrossFit, Jill deepened her training and eventually earned a certification in health coaching. She even taught a course called “Elevated Wellness” at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, where students took goat yoga classes, played pickleball, and learned what “macros” really means beyond being the buzzword du jour on their social feeds.
“Macros” are macronutrients — protein, fats, carbohydrates. They’re the fuel our bodies run on. And Jill saw firsthand what happened when student athletes didn’t choose the right macros before they went out onto the field. “I’d watch kids wolf down fast food before a game. Then, I’d see them getting sick on the sidelines later,” recalls Jill. “They’re missing the mark on understanding how to fuel themselves properly.” Now, PLN offers a place where athletes from nearby high schools, including CHCA and Sycamore, often gather before or after a game to grab a protein shake or get a quick, healthy meal that can help them go the distance. Providing that space for camaraderie and connection is part of the PLN mission for both Jill and Dif, who shares his mother’s passion for wellness and helping people. With a degree in social work and several years’ experience managing local gyms, Dif focuses on the operations side of the business. Whether it’s coaching members on wellness, representing PLN at fitness events, or creating charming, often humorous PLN social posts, Dif brings both energy and empathy as he leads their staff in building the PLN community.
FREE MEMBERSHIP, PRICELESS BENEFITS
Jill, Dif, and all the nutrition coaches at PLN provide the kind of support that can make a difference for someone who wants to live a healthier lifestyle. Just ask Rachel Engel, who lost 15 pounds and 6% of her body fat in just two months. “If you’re even a little curious, I’d encourage you to stop by, meet the owners, and connect with the team,” Rachel writes in her Google review. “They are truly wonderful people. They have cheered me on every step of my journey, and I am so grateful.”
“WE’RE ABOUT relationships... BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SEE THE longevity IN SUCCESS.” Some members pack PLN meals for a delicious, nutrient-packed lunch, while others enjoy sitting down to a stress-free dinner at the end of the day. Wherever PLN meals fit into your weekly menu, they may be able to help trim down your food budget, too — as fast food and carry-out take a backseat. Another customer, Rachel Dejti, shares more in her Google review, “Our food expenses are way down, and we’re eating so much healthier now.” Whether you’re time-starved, trying to eat healthier, or seeking a place where you’ll find encouragement at every step of your wellness journey, PLN Harper’s Point is here for you. And that includes a free consultation. “We’re about relationships,” explains Jill, “because that’s where people are going to see the longevity in success.” For Jill and Dif, creating a family of support is at the heart of their PLN mission. Mayor Kathy Bailey
Loveland Leaders Have Knocked It Out of the Park with the Renovation of Nisbet ARTICLE BY KATHY DOANE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS

O UR TOWN | L I FE + C ULT U RE
From left to right, Chris Wojnicz and Dave Kennedy
When people gather in Nisbet Park next spring to enjoy the inaugural concert at the new amphitheater, they’ll quickly realize one great thing about Nisbet’s $2 million renovation. Regardless of where they are on the 2.8-acre grounds, they’ll be able to see and hear the performance, a result of reorienting the new $1.275 million stage to face the entire park. And that only tops the list of amenities that patrons are going to love once the work is fully completed next year. Loveland City Manager Dave Kennedy can’t help smiling when he ticks them off: An expanded playground with additional features (including the replacement of the mulch/chip base with astroturf). New lighted walkways connecting all areas, and a section that encircles the park and connects to the main trail. A totally rebuilt gazebo. Three sleek, new dining areas on paver bases. Two adult swing stations that face the Little Miami River (much like those in Smale Park on Cincinnati’s riverfront). A new Gateway Entrance on Karl Brown Way. Totally refurbished restrooms. That’s quite a list, and an even bigger accomplishment. “The bathrooms in the park were one of the first complaints I heard about when I became mayor in 2017,” Kathy Bailey says. They were showing the wear and tear of their 36 years, and that was a concern. The restrooms, located right next to the trail just south of the O’Bannon Creek bridge, are an important amenity for bikers and hikers when they reach historic Loveland.

According to Jim Grethel, president of the Loveland Museum Center and town historian, Nisbet Park was previously the site of small houses occupied by railroad workers in the early and mid20th century. “When I was a boy riding my bike through downtown in the 1970s, there were just remnants of those houses left,” Jim remembers. “That part of town had taken a beating over the years because of flooding.” Once the Caesar Creek Lake project was completed in the late 1970s to control flooding in the Little Miami River watershed, the land’s potential attracted the attention of the Loveland Kiwanis and Jr. Women’s clubs. They began raising money later that decade to buy the land and turn it into a park. Heading that effort was C. Roger Nisbet, a business leader known for his generosity in giving back to the community. The park opened in 1981 and was named for Roger, who died 10 years later at age 91. Sadly, as the 21-century reached its second decade, the park had fallen behind as the renaissance of historic downtown bloomed around it. It would take a few more years for its fortunes to change, but between 2018 and 2022, with Dave

Kennedy and Mayor Bailey at the helm of local government, Loveland developed four master plans to continue its transformation. One of them, dated July 2021, was the reimagining and renovating of Nisbet Park. The first formidable challenge was surveying the public as to what they’d like to see in the park, given that COVID had shut down most public gatherings. “It helped that the park was outside, and I remember a Parks and Recreation committee holding more than one meeting where we solicited community input,” Mayor Bailey recalls. Perhaps the most important method for learning what the public wanted, however, came from a group of Loveland high schoolers, who developed a QR code. “The QR code was placed all around the park so people could take a survey and be specific about that particular part of Nisbet, and what they would like to see there,” Dave says. “That was such an important piece of it.” The opinions collected revealed several common themes: The amphitheater needed a major update, walkability within the park needed improving, and the children’s play areas could use a refresh. Handicapped accessibility, better bathrooms and lighting throughout were also top concerns. All the ideas were turned over to KZF Design of Cincinnati, who put together a plan. City staff immediately went to work identifying funding sources. In addition to money from the state
and federal government, every component in the “new” Nisbet has been the beneficiary of a grant. “Dave, our city manager, is amazing at writing grants and getting awarded them,” Mayor Bailey says. “We’ve tried to be as cost effective as possible without going to residents to ask for money, spending as little as possible from our general fund.” The amphitheater should be finished by the end of November, a fitting present to cap off Loveland’s 150th anniversary year. “Programming will start in the spring. We’re working on bigger names,” Dave says, adding that concerts will move from Sunday to early Saturday evenings. “With DORA, people are allowed to bring food and drinks, including alcohol, into the park,” Dave explains. “I can see people getting carryout from one of the nearby restaurants and then heading to a concert in the park.” Still to come, the new Gateway Entrance, additional work on the playscape, lighting, landscaping, restroom updates, and a sculpture near the main entrance. Dave has high hopes for the park’s impact. “Once we follow through on all the plans, Nisbet Park is going to be the premier stop along the entire bike trail.” Its potential as a prime gathering place for everyone, residents and visitors alike, will finally blossom to match its surroundings. lovinlifeloveland.com/places/nisbet-park/ 126 Karl Brown Way, Loveland

FAVORITE THINGS DELI BRINGS A TASTE OF HOME TO DOWNTOWN LOVELAND
YOU KNOW, THAT SONG ARTICLE BY MARY KATE LENARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J. CAPPS
Walk into Favorite Things Deli on any given day and you’ll find fresh treats, goods from local businesses, and owner Josh Moss nearby, talking up whatever he’s craving that week. Since opening in June, the deli has quickly become a community staple, inspired by family favorites and a love for feeding people.
Josh grew up in Loveland, and the shop grew out of All the Ingredients, the meal prep/catering business his mom Leah started years ago. Family dinner was always a big deal during his formative years, and Leah’s willingness to try anything in the kitchen rubbed off early. Watching Loveland grow into a thriving micro-economy, Josh wanted to fill a gap — Loveland needed a deli! — and be part of that momentum. So what exactly are Josh’s current favorites? You know they’re noteworthy (crave-worthy).
THE #9 MUFFULETTA
Piled perfectly onto thick, crisp focaccia with imported soppressata,
capicola, mortadella, and provolone, the standout is the olive tapenade: made with green, black, and Kalamata olives, along with sundried tomato, basil, oil, capers, and garlic. “I always make those people try it,” Josh says of olive skeptics. “They always love it.”
THE #6 CHIPOTLE TURKEY
Built on sourdough with turkey, gouda, arugula, tomato, onion, pepper relish, and chipotle mayo, it’s earned its fan-fave status. Fresh, balanced, and perfect to enjoy at the park or along the river, an intentional move on Josh’s part. The deli keeps seating limited to encourage patrons to explore downtown.
These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things Before the deli, Josh built a career across media, startups, and nonprofits, and he’s heavily involved in the local rock climbing community. That range of experience shapes how he runs Favorite Things, blending business acumen with hometown pride. “I want to pour love back into Loveland,” he shares, “the hometown that raised me.”

CHICKEN SALAD, BROCCOLI SALAD, CARROT CAKE
Ask Josh to name a third favorite and he can’t. It’s a perfect trio instead. Both salads are clean, fresh, and have their own following. But the carrot cake, made with a pinch of coconut (yes!), truly stands out. No surprise, as all the shop’s sweet indulgences are procured locally (including those over-the-top cinnamon rolls, available weekends only while they last). But the menu keeps evolving, with Josh teasing fall additions like soup and fried chicken sandwiches (you read that right). Facebook.com/FavoriteThingsDeli 305 W. Loveland Ave, Loveland 513.583.0100

E L E VA T E D A PPEA L When Artwork Impacts the Dining Room Setting and Formal Enjoyment
There’s a change taking place in homes throughout the country: dining rooms, which had seen declining use in recent years, are making a comeback. Yes, the Formal Dining Room is in again. That’s because dining rooms offer families a dedicated respite from today’s modern, open-concept floor plans. They’re also a great excuse to rethink decor and art. “These tend to be more formal places, often with crystal chandeliers or glasses, more silver and gold and silverware,” says Veronique Hammons, art director and owner of Gallery Veronique.
The days of dining decor simply being colorful to inspire appetite are gone. “That’s becoming a thing of the past,” Veronique explains. “People today like a bit more formal dining room … one that’s both beautiful and elegant.” And when it comes to open-concept floor plans? “Very little wall space is usually set aside for this kind of area,” she says. “So, when you choose artwork for that setting, you have to be really intentional with selecting a piece that will bring either color or texture, or will tie your kitchen in with your living room.”

Looking Your Best
Veronique knows a thing or two about properly displaying art, as well. And she’s happy to share a few foundational tips to make hanging your pieces easy. “Have all the pieces lined up on the floor and in the combination that you like,” she advises. Then, begin taking measurements and determining overall layout.
Make sure the walls can handle what you have in mind. “Center your display, and work around it, measuring wire-to-wire and height-to-height on each picture.” Maintain balance when going solo. “If you have just one piece to put over a table, always measure first how far it is from the table to the wall, and then from the middle of the table,” Veronique explains. Know when it looks right. Mark the wall with the height of your picture and know how low the hanging wire goes. Then step back and review: see if raising that point up or down looks better. “When it feels right to you, mark where the wire would be.” And, voilà! Say Cheese, Loveland
Kathryn Holcomb Is Bringing The Cheese Lady — and Her Love of Gathering Around the Table — to Her Hometown
ARTICLE BY LISA FLETCHER PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MEINBERG
48
C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE
What makes a good cheese so irresistible? Maybe it’s the creamy richness, the sharp tang, the delicious surprise of finding a flavor you didn’t know you loved (really loved). Maybe it’s what happens when you put it on a board with a good cracker, a spoonful of jam, and people gathered around the table. For Kathryn Holcomb, it’s all that — and the joy of sharing it. Her love of cheese began as a child. She was an adventurous eater who loved discovering how different flavors could come from such simple ingredients. Over the years, cheese boards became her specialty for family gatherings and celebrations. Then, about a decade ago, her family discovered The Cheese Lady while traveling through Michigan. One stop became two, and eventually they were planning routes around visits to The Cheese Lady shops in Muskegon and Traverse City. When Kathryn learned the company offered franchising, she thought, “Wouldn’t that be fun?” What started as a playful idea soon became a possibility she couldn’t shake. And eventually, a passion she couldn’t ignore. This summer, Kathryn brought The Cheese Lady to Loveland’s and Lebanon’s farmers markets. This fall, she’ll open the first location outside Michigan in our very own Shoppers Haven plaza. For Kathryn, Loveland was an easy choice. She grew up here and is a third-generation Loveland graduate. “I wanted to bring The Cheese Lady home,” she says with her contagious smile. Because if you’ve visited her market stand, you’ve probably already met the reason The Cheese Lady feels like such a natural fit. Kathryn has a wonderfully cheerful, easy way with people. She talks with customers as though they’ve been friends for years, enthusiastically offers samples, and genuinely seems to delight in watching someone discover a new fave. Regulars come back looking for their favorites, while newcomers are happily pulled into the tasting adventure. Her daughter noticed that natural connection, too. “Mom! You’re going to make so many new friends!” she told her.
“She was absolutely right,” Kathryn adds. And those new friends are already finding ways to bring The Cheese Lady home with them: a snack at the kitchen table, a girls’ night on the patio, a book club gathered around a spread, a birthday celebration. “Each customer has brought a new perspective to the table,” Kathryn shares. “It’s great fun to see folks returning week after week.” That sense of discovery is at the heart of what Kathryn hopes to bring to Loveland. Try it before you buy it is her philosophy, taking some of the mystery out of choosing a cheese, and inviting customers to venture beyond their usual go-to’s. This summer, nearly three dozen varieties have made appearances at the markets, with many selling out. “We’re the place that turns food into an experience,” Kathryn explains. At the new retail store, that experience will get even more mouth-watering. The selection will eventually include more than 100 cheeses from domestic and international producers, from sharp Wisconsin Vat 17 World Cheddar to creamy French Fromager d’Affinois to Cotswold cheese from the U.K. Customers can taste at the cutting counter, learn about flavors and pairings, and have their selections freshly cut to order. And then there are the accompaniments — charcuterie meats, crackers, dips, spreads, Michigan-made jams, cheese tools, and beautiful cutting boards (handcrafted by Kathryn’s husband!). But she’s not stopping there. A Cheese of the Month will invite customers to regularly try something new with 25% off the featured selection. Targeted to open in November, her store will also eventually include “The Board Room,” where Kathryn plans to host tastings, classes, pairing events, and holiday gatherings. It’s a fitting extension of her 21 years as a teacher. “My passion for cheese paired with my love of teaching is a match made in heaven,” she grins. For Kathryn, this is ultimately about much more than cheese. It’s about helping people gather, celebrate, and connect over something scrumptious. “Food brings people together,” Kathryn shares, effusive and genuine as always. “I look forward to being a small part of helping customers bring their friends and loved ones together with a delicious cheese experience.” Facebook.com/TheCheeseLadyCincinnati 513 Loveland Madeira Rd, Loveland
