Better State of Mind Another new year is upon us. A time to start fresh, set new goals, make more plans. I actually decided that I would take some time to reflect on some of the goals I set for myself this time last year. Did I hit all of them—no, but I did make some positive changes. I’m proud to say that I did start exercising more and I did change my diet ... but honestly the one I am most proud of is I wanted to improve my mindset. I started going to bed early, I journaled more, and I also found a life coach who has helped me prioritize what is important in my busy life. As you turn the pages of this issue you will find articles that focus on healthy eating—we’ve got a complete shake and smoothie lineup for you, and we also can’t forget our cover photo from The Veg Head, but you will also find ways to destress and decompress your mind. Unplugging from social media might seem impossible but The Lindner Center has some great recommendations on how to do so—and it might just change your life. Also, we are so excited to welcome NAMI Southwest Ohio to Loveland. They just opened their new headquarters here, and they’re ready to get to work helping the community, helping you. So, if focusing on better peace of mind isn’t on your list of goals just yet, maybe pencil it in. Trust me—you’ll thank me 365 days from now.

HIGHER

learning,

N AT U R A L LY ARTICLE BY LISA FLETCHER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS

The excitement is palpable as children walk through the frenzied halls just after recess at Children’s Meeting House. With wide, inquisitive eyes and rosy cheeks, they gaze into the large windows that now house a brand-new endeavor at this Loveland Montessori school … a middle school program.

CMH’S NEW MONTESSORI MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM TAKES OFF

After years of thorough planning and organizing, this year CMH was able to welcome its inaugural class of five 7th graders to the previous 190 students attending preschool through 6th grade. “For many families, the pandemic brought about a stronger focus on education—specifically on safety, social and emotional development, and alignment of shared goals between home and school,” says Casey Reed, Director of CMH. “For the past few years, parents have voiced their wishes in surveys and focus groups—and we heard them.” Casey also believes a driving force for change was to provide a Montessori education through 8th grade to shift the transition time students had for high school. “It was hard for many of our students to go to a new school for middle school, then move again two years later,” she notes. Families are excited for this new opportunity, Casey shares. In fact, the program will more than double in size next year with the addition of more 7th graders from the current 6th-grade class. But the first area of business? Reorganizing space to house the new program in the former administration offices—then hiring a team of teachers who knew how to create a middle school Montessori program. “We were so fortunate to find not one, but two Montessori teachers with middle school training,” Casey smiles. “I knew as soon as we met them that they would be a perfect fit.” This teaching team is married couple Kelly and Adam Ladd, who have spent the last three years creating a middle and high school program for an

Kelly was immediately impressed with the school when they took their initial tour. “I loved the feel of the school—it felt like a place where the child was definitely put first. Montessori always talks about respecting the child—and that was clear at CMH,” she remembers. CONTINUED >

In addition to teaching, the Ladds have led workshops on Montessori programming in countries such as Taiwan and Portugal, as well as consulted for schools throughout the U.S. and Mexico. And they have become quite a team. Kelly is responsible for teaching humanities and language arts, while Adam’s position is hybrid— he’s both a part-time administrator for CMH and its science and math teacher. They also share responsibilities such as microeconomy and art, and work on developing the curriculum together. “We draw mostly from what we’ve created in the past, but curriculum at this level is very exploratory and fluid, so it can shift and evolve as needed based on student interest, the needs of the land around campus, and unique opportunities for experience in the greater community,” Adam shares.

20

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | EDUCAT ION

The Ladds are taking advantage of what our area has to offer. “We believe in place-based learning, and getting students out into their community is a big part of the program,” Kelly says. These learning opportunities have included trips to the Loveland Historical Museum, local businesses, OTR, and Thomas More University—where they learned about water testing and then applied the skills to their own on-campus creek. Kelly can already see the impact. “I want these students to know they can change their community and the world—to know their potential, to make this world a better place. When they are shown the possibilities, they will rise.” CMHSchool.com | 927 O’Bannonville Road, Loveland | 513.683.4757

“If you treat the people in your community well, the community will treat you well in return,” says Dr. Jacob Stadiem. “The best part of our days in the office is hearing about our patients, their lives, their families, and how they spend their free time.” Dr. Stadiem, his wife Michaela, their two daughters and dogs live about a mile from downtown Loveland, having moved here in 2020. “We love the community and everything it has to offer,” he says. His Northeast Orthodontic Specialists care centers have locations in both Loveland and Blue Ash. “Just as a pediatrician wants to see certain developmental milestones,” Dr. Stadiem says, “there are certain milestones an orthodontist wants to direct and guide when it comes to a patient’s mouth.” Curious about the age a child should first visit an orthodontist? You’re not alone. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that most children have their first orthodontic appointment and screening by age 7. “To be sure, most children don’t need treatment at that young of an age,” Dr. Stadium explains. “But there are developmental markers we monitor from that age in case early intervention is necessary. That’s because certain issues can be corrected early to prevent more complex treatment in the future, through surgery or adult tooth removal.”

25

If you haven’t experienced orthodontic care since your own childhood, you might be happy to learn that things have changed. “We no longer have to take goopy impressions of your teeth,” Dr. Stadiem smiles. “We use an intraoral scanner to take digital scans of your teeth, eliminating the need for those old-style impressions.” His office also uses 3D-printed brackets, which cut down treatment time significantly. “I also take a conservative approach to treatment,” he says. “Just because we like to see kids at a young age, doesn’t mean we’re starting treatment then, too.” Dr. Stadiem advises that, fortunately, the vast majority of patients aren’t ready for treatment at 7. Still, they should continue to check in at 6-month intervals to monitor growth and development. This also helps youngsters familiarize themselves with his team. “If and when the time comes to get braces, kids will already feel at home,” he explains. According to Dr. Stadiem, common procedures for children at this age are palatal expanders, which widen the palate and help correct crossbite, and create extra room for adult teeth to come in. “Limited braces or aligners can also help make room for adult teeth to erupt.”

But one other concern for many parents is the effects of mouth breathing. “This can involve a lot of factors,” Dr. Stadiem says. “A palatal expander can sometimes help alleviate nasal constriction—which can lead to mouth breathing. Other issues may include enlarged tonsils and adenoids.” Dr. Stadiem prefers evaluating and referring to appropriate doctors, dentists and myofunctional therapists that he likes to work with in these cases. That’s why, during new patient exams, his office asks a series of questions to help gauge if any breathing issues could exist and could benefit from intervention or a referral. And yes, that first consultation is always free. Dr. Stadiem also points out—to the surprise of many—that his practice isn’t just limited to care for juveniles or young adults. “Often, braces and orthodontic treatment are just seen as something for kids,” he remarks. “But about half of our patient base is adults! It’s so rewarding when an entire family, both children and parents, trusts us with their care.” Community well-being goes hand-inhand with proactive health maintenance, and with neighbors like Dr. Stadiem and his family, we should all be aligned for success—and smiles—in the years ahead. “As a Loveland resident myself,” Dr. Stadiem says, “I want to see our community succeed—not just our patients, but for their families, as well.” That’s a sentiment worth smiling about. Jacob, age 10, was nervous to show his parents his report card. He was doing great in every subject except math. He felt confused and flustered every time he took a test. So his parents signed him up for Mathnasium over the holiday break. His instructor’s customized learning plan helped him feel more comfortable and confident as he tackled multiplication and division problems. Now he feels ready to take on the second half of the school year. Way to go, Jacob!

Shortly after Christmas that year, Emily found one at Kohl’s—she bought it right away, so it could be the boy’s reward, knowing he’d work hard to reach it. “And he earned that telescope!” she recalls. “He was so proud of himself—and we were so excited for him! It was fantastic.” Emily sees Mathnasium as a bridge of support between students, teachers and parents. If a student isn’t grasping a concept in the classroom, it can be challenging for teachers to provide individualized attention while teaching the rest of the class. Likewise, busy parents might be too frazzled (or too removed from school math) to deal with fractions at the end of a long day.

Math. For kids, it ranks right up there with spinach. It’s really good for you, but … blech! If a kid had to choose between cleaning their room or doing their math homework, chances are their room would be spotless. Unfortunately, bed sheets with hospital corners won’t raise a GPA. Similarly, if parents had to choose between helping their kid with algebra or teaching them to drive, odds are that kid will be parallel parking in no time. But math doesn’t have to be painful. Actually, it can be fun, according to Emily Ballinger, Owner and Center Director of Mathnasium of Loveland. “We want to make it a bit lighthearted,” says Emily, who opened the doors to her Loveland location in January of 2023. “We want to make it fun.” That means there’s a Jenga tower and a dartboard, where students can take a quick break from their work. There are special themes, too, like Pajama Day and Cookie Day. What’s more, as students complete their math worksheets, they

“We want to take the stress out,” she explains. “We break down math so it’s easy to understand.” When a child first comes into Mathnasium, they take an assessment. From those results, an individualized learning plan is created, designed to build upon their specific needs. Mathnasium students attend 10 hourlong sessions a month—for algebra and above, those sessions last 1.5 hours. Up to four students work with a trained instructor, who helps them complete their worksheets. Instructors can also help with homework, review for an upcoming test, or study for a standardized test like the SAT. While Mathnasium may be a franchise, Emily’s approach to teaching is far from cookie-cutter. She and her staff take the time to get to know each student as a person. In fact, it’s this extra level of genuine care and personalized attention that truly sets Emily’s center apart. “Yes, I’m a business owner, but I’m also a parent,” Emily explains. “So I run this how I would want it to be for my child.”

IT’S TAILORED, PERSONALIZED SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS IN:

Elementary School: Strengthening both addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division fluency— without a solid foundation, students can get frustrated or struggle. Middle School: Continuing to build fact fluency, adding computation and topics that support upcoming math levels, plus High School Placement Test prep. High School: Help with Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus, plus SAT and ACT exam test prep. “Our goal is to help the students build confidence and independence in the classroom so that when they’re working on homework or taking that test, they can look at it and say, ‘I got this!’” smiles Emily. beautifully HEALTHY BETTER THE SKIN YOU’RE IN AT STUDIO 7 ESTHETICS

Left to right, owners Dee and Darian

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELIZABETH A. LOWRY

34

S KIN CA R E | BEAUTY

The first time I visited Studio 7 Esthetics, I expected the inside to look much like my dermatologist’s office: inescapable fluorescent glare, sparse, medicinal, boring— nothing to see here. “This can’t be a skin-care place,” I thought upon walking in, taking in the boho decor of the brow bar off to the left with its perfectly mismatched chairs and perky plant wall. “Can it?” Perhaps sensing my skepticism, owners Darian Fischer and Dee Hamilton took me on a tour. And there was much to take in. Every turn and every open door led to a new and intriguing surprise: An infrared sauna! Himalayan salt room! VersaSpa! Super chic lounge area! It was all I could do to not ask if they wouldn’t mind if I just, ya know, hopped in the infrared sauna room for a quick 30?

However, I (reluctantly) re-focused and discovered so much about what makes Studio 7 completely different, starting with their focus on your individual journey.

STUDIO 7 ESTHETICS ESSENTIALS

“Studio 7 Esthetics was developed from a dream we had of one place, one location, one go-to hangout spot for anyone wanting some self-care and kindness,” Dee explains. With that goal in mind, the duo created a space with room for six independently rented suites plus the “main house” serving as the seventh, all with a variety of fullbody skincare and wellness services. “Darian and I wanted a safe haven for our team of independent contractors to work both collectively and

independently—while also feeling encouraged and inspired to be their best selves,” Dee shares. Mission accomplished. The uniqueness of Studio 7 is that Darian, Dee and their team tailor your experience to what suits you best, first gauging what you are looking for and then developing a care plan. “Everyone’s skin is different—how can there ever be a ‘one-size-fits-all’”? Darian asks. “Our thought is, there can’t be. As skin experts, we assess and develop your plan. Not mine, not your friend’s—yours.”

STUDIO 7 SERVICES

Offering a mix of both holistic and clinical services, Studio 7 has something for everyone—anyone wanting to better themselves and the skin they’re in. CONTINUED >

ESTHETICS

The studio’s general esthetics offerings include facials, skin therapy and modality application, acne treatments, healing peels, exfoliation, hair removal and light therapy restoration, spray tan, and brow beautification (including threading).

VERSASPA SUNLESS TANNING ROOM

Looking for an amazing sunless tan? This automated, sunless spray tanning system offers an open-concept booth, a complete blow-dry system, and step-by-step voice instructions. That’s not all— you also have the option to incorporate body hydration, rejuvenation, skin-soothing botanicals, soy proteins, and anti-aging ingredients like marine algae.

INFRARED SAUNA

Sleep better, detoxify, relieve sore muscles, improve circulation and more with an infrared sauna treatment. This type of sauna employs infrared lamps that warm your body directly. Heat from the infrared lamps penetrates more deeply than warmed air, allowing for a more intense sweat at a lower temperature.

HALOTHERAPY SALT ROOM

Detoxify, relax and refresh in their Himalayan Salt Room. Salt therapy helps detoxify the respiratory system, sinuses, skin and even some organs via microscopic, medical-grade salt particles you breathe in during your session. Salt ions purify the room’s air—which can also increase lung capacity and reduce physical ailments for any age.

MUSCLE ACTIVATION TECHNIQUE

Find better balance, symmetry and muscle function with this unique, in-demand service. Studio 7’s MAT expert can improve and restore range of motion, stability and strength—perfect for pro athletes, weekend warriors and everyone in between.

SO. MUCH. MORE.

But there’s tons more in addition to the amazing offerings above—from pre-natal pampering to salt yoga and beyond. You have to experience these individualized services for yourself. What better time than the New Year? Indulge—and give Darian and Dee a call. Studio7Esthetics.com | 12096 Montgomery Rd, Cincinnati | 513.550.1439

D i g i t a l D e tox IDENTIFYING UNHEALTHY DIGITAL HABITS + TIPS FOR MODERATING USAGE

ARTICLE BY KAREN ANDREA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Dr. Chris Tuell

38

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | WE LLN E SS

Screens are everywhere. We live in an ever-present digital world that consumes our time and focus—and can be problematic for our mental, physical and relational health. None of us can escape the effect social media has on our lives. One researcher reports that on average, people unlock their phones 80 times a day—and only laugh 15 times daily. Even though our connected world can provide benefits, screen time can also expose users to violence, sexual content, cyberbullying, predators, negative stereotypes and misinformation. Parents especially are concerned about the time their children spend on electronic devices—as well as what they are viewing. We’re fortunate to have the Lindner Center of HOPE in our community—offering their expertise on concerns related to social media usage, as well as guidance on using it wisely. Clinical Director of Addiction Services, Dr. Chris Tuell points out, “Most kids can utilize social media in a responsible and healthy way—but for some, it can become out of control and problematic.” He cites research from Johns Hopkins University that found teens (13-17) who spend more than three hours a day on social media are more likely to report levels of loneliness, anxiety, depression, antisocial behaviors and aggressiveness. And teens who spend five hours or more per day on their devices are 70% more likely to have suicidal ideations. Dr. Tuell shares a few warning signs to be aware of when determining whether social media usage is becoming problematic—or even addictive. He tells us the inability to manage or stop usage, obsessing over access, and lying about usage are all behavioral signals to watch for. Other concerning behaviors may be neglecting responsibilities and decreased interest and achievement in school and other activities. “An important concern centers on whether the behavior is continued despite negative consequences,” Dr. Tuell explains. “Teens who continue to engage in the behavior knowing it is impacting school

and other interests, damaging relationships and hurting the family, yet do it anyway. This is the true essence of addiction.” Psychological problems can include becoming depressed or anxious when access is limited, increased comparison to others, feeling left out, and using social media as a way to cope with stress. Relationally, they may prefer time online over social interaction with friends and family. Physical issues can include sleep difficulties, headaches, and poor eating and personal hygiene habits. “Every time we check our phone, go online, read a text, etc., we get a release of the neurochemical dopamine that is related to pleasure and survival,” Dr. Tuell explains. “Whether the brain is triggered by gaming, gambling, shopping, illicit drugs, food, alcohol or social media, a similar neurochemical process is occurring. Unfortunately for some, this process can hijack the brain’s reward system, resulting in an addiction.” Lindner Center can provide individual and family counseling and therapy to address concerns related to social media usage. A new short-term teen outpatient program is beginning to help participants understand themselves—and build skills to improve overall functioning. Dr. Tuell encourages adults to model healthy social media usage and take inventory of any warning signs and misuse that are impacting the individual and family. He recommends regularly suggesting other activities including physical ones. His top tips? Limit usage for ages 13–18 to two hours, utilize monitoring software, and no screens in private areas, during mealtimes or in kids’ bedrooms. In summary, Dr. Tuell reflects, “While social media offers many benefits, excessive use can have adverse effects. Finding a balance that suits individual needs and priorities can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling life.” LindnerCenterofHOPE.org 4075 Old Western Row Rd, Mason | 513.536.4673

Healthy, Fast and Fresh ARTICLE BY CARLY TAMBORSKI

Hidden gems? That’s what The Veg Head is packed with, inspired by owner Mark Metcalfe’s childhood and family antiques—think rare fishing lures, vintage ovens, heirloom toys, more. And while his menu is widely popular among modern vegans and vegetarians, “hidden gem” is exactly what The Veg Head is, because it’s perfect for carnivores, too. His kitchen has two separate grills—one for vegetarian food, one for meat, so there’s no cross-contamination. In 2006, Mark saw the need for more diverse restaurant menus—and different meals for his family.

Chef Mark’s Classic Hummus

• 1 15-oz. can chickpeas • Juice of 1 lemon • 1¼ cup sesame seed butter • 1 garlic clove

½ tsp cumin Pinch of paprika Salt to taste 2–3 tbsp water

With a food processor running, add ingredients one at a time and mix until well blended, 1 to 2 minutes. For smoother hummus, add 1 or 2 more tbsp of water, mix again. TheVegHeadFoods.com 920 Loveland Madeira Rd, Loveland | 513.697.7090

“My daughter didn’t eat meat so I was having to cook two meals all the time—I figured if I’m in this situation, then other families are, too, so we opened The Veg Head as a healthy alternative that tastes good.” Mark’s won dozens of awards for Best Wrap, Best Vegetarian Restaurant, Cleanest Kitchen, Heart Health, and has even been recognized by the Ohio Senate for his entrepreneurship and efforts in recycling. Still successful nearly two decades later, Mark now also delivers his fare to local schools, cafes and restaurants. His most popular item? The hummus wrap. “Hummus is very simple, quick and easy. This is a basic recipe anyone can make. Don’t like sesame seed butter? Cut it in half. Don’t like garlic? Leave it out. You can add pine nuts, roasted peppers, avocados— anything to make it your own.”

A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND —AND ARE HERE TO HELP

Never A lone

“

At our core, we’re just t r y ing to ser ve people —if one in f ive indiv iduals are af fected by ment al illness, then f ive are st ill af fected ... the people liv ing w ith ment al illness, their families, and ever yone in the communit y they’re interact ing w ith. Whatever your struggle may be, you are not alone. NAMI Southwest Ohio is here to lend a helping hand and act as a guiding light for the Loveland community’s conversation about mental illness. Fact: one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness, and one in six of our youth (aged 6-17) experience a mental health disorder each year. It might seem like a staggering number, but NAMI SWOH is here to provide aid, assistance, acceptance and understanding for those in the community affected by mental illness. NAMI stands for National Alliance on Mental Illness. Their mission? “To provide education, advocacy, support and public awareness, so that individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives here,” states Katie Harper, Executive Director of NAMI Southwest Ohio. “Locally, we serve Hamilton, Clermont, Warren and Clinton counties.” And though they’ve been serving our community since the organization’s formation in 1979, NAMI’s doors are now open and proudly located in the heart of Loveland. “Our old space was in an office park,” Katie reminisces. “I felt that since we’re a nonprofit, we really needed to immerse ourselves in the communities we serve. For us, Loveland was ideal because, with those four counties of service, Loveland sits on three of them.” The list of what NAMI can do for people living with mental illness is close to endless—good news for those needing any variety of help. Through outreach programming, NAMI offers story-telling and evidence-based learning to help people better understand their own struggles and the hardships of those around them. “One of the things we do to take the stigma away is just talking about mental health. We do that through stories—because people don’t identify with statistics. You look at a statistic and it’s just a number, so you have to humanize them,” Katie explains. “Every time we tell our stories, every time we share our own

experiences with mental illness, it chips away at the stigma surrounding it.” While NAMI has a tiny but mighty staff of five, most of their programs are volunteer-led, and everyone who is involved at NAMI has been impacted by mental illness in some way. Katie herself includes her very personal reason about why this organization means so much, sharing how she was inspired when her close friend died by suicide. And like her, all of NAMI’s amazing volunteers have their own stories to tell and experiences to share with the community—each voice making a dent in ending the stereotypes and shedding light on mental illness. From peer-led support groups to podcasts and webinars (available on your time, at your convenience), NAMI has something for everyone, whether you’re personally suffering from mental illness or have a loved one experiencing it. “We do nine-week courses that are really deep dives, or we offer one-day seminars that are a quick overview,” Katie says. “There are weekly, bi-weekly or monthly support groups … and we offer a whole host of presentations as well.” There’s literally something for everyone here at NAMI—maybe the best part is that when you call their helpline, you’re getting a real person who is ready and armed with real solutions to help you navigate what NAMI can offer you. “Our information and referral specialists can help people connect the dots on what recourses are available to them both inside and outside of NAMI.” Whatever you may be going through, whether mental illness affects you or a loved one, always remember you are not alone. NAMI has so much to offer that we can’t fit it all into these pages—and isn’t that the way it should be? Check out their website, call them, and contact them if you think you or someone you know could benefit from the resources NAMI has to offer. NamiSwoh.org | 420 W. AREN’T REALLY SURE WHERE TO GO FOR HELP (OR IF HELP IS EVEN NEEDED)? THREE SIGNS THAT COULD SIGNAL A CALL TO NAMI MIGHT BE NEEDED:

1. Chronic (2+ weeks) changes in your ability to function in one or more areas—including changes to your eating and sleeping habits, fluctuation in your productivity, or a change in your activity levels—are common signs of an underlying condition.

44

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

2. Feeling extreme emotional highs or lows can be a sign, including excessive worrying or fear, or extreme sadness, as well as having feelings of euphoria or uncontrollable highs. 3. Withdrawing socially is another common side effect of mental illness. This could look like avoiding friends, family and social events, or difficulties understanding or relating to others.
