Courtney Kraemer

Last year my husband and I each made a list of areas in our lives that we wished we could improve on. We shared our lists with the hope that we could keep each other accountable. I’m pleased to say that we did hit the majority of those goals! So, this year we plan to do the same exercise—new year, new goals (and a few carryovers from last year, too). If you’re feeling a little inspired to do the same thing, I would suggest reading this issue for ideas. For exercise goals, check out our article on D1 Training Cincy North ... or maybe good nutrition is a hot button for you, so turn to our article on Blended Fuel. If 2023 is the year to tackle aches, pains and improve function and balance, then Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center is your answer—read A Balancing Act for more. Giving was number one on my list last year, and CancerFree KIDS hosts many events throughout the year, and they provide a lot of opportunities for you to give back and get involved. We’ve listed quite a few in this issue. Good luck with your resolutions and goals for 2023! We hope you stick to them and maybe find a little inspiration as you flip through these pages. Happy New Year.

BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF D1 Training Improves Family and Community, Together “Once the temperature drops,” Sean Witzgall says, “business heats up.” As assistant operations manager at D1 Training Cincy North, he knows well the reasons that many have fitness and wellness on the brain. “It's a time when everyone’s reflecting on the past year—evaluating sports performance, or simply looking to have more healthy energy.”

It’s a typical busy Saturday afternoon, but we caught up with Sean to find out more about what makes D1 Training Cincy North such a special place, year-round—for people of all abilities.

IS THERE A TYPICAL D1 TRAINING MEMBER? Our athletes are all different ages and in different parts of their fitness journey. We start at 7 years old, and have worked with adults who are 90 and older. It all boils down to becoming the best version of yourself—that’s what we help achieve at D1 Training Cincy North.

At the end of the day, it’s simple ... you’re making decisions that impact your ability to become the best version of yourself!

HOW COMMON DO YOU HAVE PARENTS WORK OUT WHILE THEIR KIDDO IS DOING THE SAME? This is our favorite part about what we do—and why we do it. We have a few families that have been with us since we opened—most come in because there’s an area they would like to help their child improve in, or maybe even themselves. Then they see that we can actually offer benefits to the entire family—that’s when the fun begins!

SHARE SOME ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE KEEPING DOORS OPEN DURING THE PANDEMIC? We opened in July of 2019, so just when we were starting to make an impact with people, it was put to a halt. Many people found new ways to exercise, but all of us learned how important human interaction is. We offered classes virtually, but the best impact you can have with someone is face-to-face. We also had to cancel a lot of events, which was hard— fortunately, they’ve started back up, and we’ve seen a great response from the community.

AND SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY— THAT’S IMPORTANT, RIGHT? Giving back to our community has always been a top priority for us! Nearly half of our members live in Loveland, and it’s important for us to give back to this area.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME EXAMPLES? Yes! We met the organizers of a group called Girls on the Run this year, and plan to coordinate some events. Like us, Girls on the Run prioritize character and hard work to teach confidence to girls between third and eighth grade— building positive social, emotional and of course physical behaviors. The more we can help organizations like us with a similar objective, the bigger impact we can all make together! CONTINUED >

We’ve also partnered with GiGi’s Playhouse Cincinnati, which is headquartered right here in Loveland. We provide free workouts for individuals in their community every week—it’s awesome to see the impact! Our coaches are all professionally certified and have at least 3 years of experience in the field with a college degree. So we’ve been able to create a special program called GiGi Fit, designed for both children and adults with Down syndrome.

IS THERE A SECRET TO BEING (OR BECOMING) “THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF”? Training will always thrive. We train at D1, because you need to train both your mind and body to become the best version of you. Those who see that bigger picture will succeed. Training is important because it helps drive a positive state of mind, and can help you make it through difficult days. In a relatively short time, D1 Training Cincy North has made its mark—not just on student-athletes, but on families and the greater community as well. According to Sean, it’s just a matter of making the right decisions. “At the end of the day, it’s simple,” Sean says. “You’re making decisions that impact your ability to become the best version of yourself!” Ready to rethink your own fitness plans? D1 is geared up to help you kickstart the New Year. D1training.com/cincy-north 9573 Fields Ertel Rd, Loveland 513.583.0397

CancerFree KIDS Truth: there are many businesses making a big impact along West Loveland Ave. However, it’s safe to say none has impacted as many lives locally—and nationally—as our own CancerFree KIDS. In the past 20 years, CancerFree KIDS has raised millions of dollars, driving hundreds of publications, multiple patents, clinical trials and so much more, all with one goal—ending childhood cancer. Although CancerFree KIDS’ reach is great and wide, the impetus for the nonprofit started small, in the eyes of Ellen and Sam Flannery’s five-month-old daughter.

Parents gaze into their baby’s eyes to connect, to love, to bond. But in the late 1990s, when the Flannerys looked into their daughter Shayna’s eyes, they noticed one was clouded white. Doctors diagnosed their baby with the unthinkable—retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer that only impacts a few hundred children in the country every year. Luckily, their baby’s cancer was able to be removed before it spread to her brain. Further treatments were required in Philadelphia, and it was during one of those trips that they found themselves with more questions than answers when it came to the slow progress toward finding a cure for childhood cancer.

FIGHTING AND FUNDRAISING FOR CHILDHOOD CANCER RIGHT FROM LOVELAND’S BACKYARD

The main hold up? There was a major gap in funding for pediatric cancer research, specifically in the early stages. So in 2002, the Flannerys decided to do something to close this gap—starting the nonprofit CancerFree KIDS with the goal of directly raising money to aid in research for and ultimately eradicating childhood cancer.

(including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus) were able to turn this initial funding into even more money for their projects—to the tune of $71 million—from other sources. Turns out, a little startup money goes a long, long way in the fight against childhood cancer.

HOW IT STARTED

HOW YOU CAN HELP

CancerFree KIDS began slowly, with Ellen raising money via events in the community and from individual donors. Two years in, she raised $20,000, granting $10,000 each to two innovative researchers in the early stages of their work. One of the researchers was later able to create a start-up pharmaceutical company to conduct childhood cancer research clinical trials. CancerFree KIDS’ funds often became the first grants a lot of researchers received, and it was because of this that Ellen found the nonprofit’s core focus—aiding new, promising research ideas that would otherwise go unfunded. “Here at CancerFree KIDS, our goal is always to stay on the cusp of the very best research out there,” Cari Speed explains, CFK’s Marketing Manager. “We have a renowned scientific advisory council leading our decision process for the grants we fund, and are confident they’ll keep us on the cutting edge of science that has the potential to make a true difference in the way we treat pediatric cancer. Everything we do works toward the goal to find better, more effective treatments that will change and save lives.”

CancerFree KIDS raises the bulk of their money through four signature yearly fundraisers. 1. Night for the Fight is a high school overnight event, planned by students, for students. Participants spend 12 hours at the Fifth Third Arena at the University of Cincinnati for a night filled with food, games, fun, inspiration and friendships. 2. The Butterfly Walk is another annual event in which families, friends and coworkers can come together to celebrate survivors and remember those for whom a cure did not come soon enough. In addition to the walk, participants can join in other family activities to help raise funds for CancerFree KIDS. 3. The 100 Mile Challenge is a 30-day fitness campaign where participants are asked to complete 100 miles and raise $100 in the month of September in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Participants can take on this challenge alone, create a friendsand-family team, or participate with their company in the Corporate Competition. The winning Corporate Competition team receives a research grant named in their company’s honor. 4. The Celebration of Champions is an annual dinner and auction held to honor all children who have battled childhood cancer. The event includes both a silent and live auction, raffles, wine and bourbon pulls, a tribute to Champions, an after-party concert, and entertainment from Local 12’s Bob Herzog. Those who participate in the Night for the Fight, the Butterfly Walk, and the 100 Mile Challenge raise money by sending letters and emails, raising funds on Facebook, rallying their school or company, and more.

“Everyone at CancerFree KIDS truly cares about our mission and comes to work knowing that we are making a difference … the people are what makes CancerFree KIDS special.” - Cari Speed

HOW IT’S GOING CancerFree KIDS is thrilled to report they’ve increased their fundraising efforts nearly every year since their founding, hitting the $1 million mark of total funds raised last year, and increasing their funding by 20 percent in 2022 to fund $1.2 million in grants last year. With this money, the organization was able to grant 21 researchers in 2022. Since its inception, however, CancerFree KIDS has granted $8.2 million. Many of their grant recipients

“Children should never have to endure this excruciating ordeal in order to survive. But within this truth is the knowledge that we can make this better ... and we have no choice but to try.” - Mary Piening

“We pride ourselves on creating the very best participant experience for these events, and I think our supporters recognize that and it motivates them to fundraise,” Cari says. “Not only do they believe in our cause, but we try to build our events in a way that promotes community and enjoyment for the people who work so hard to uphold our mission.”

24

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE Cari explains that CancerFree KIDS has some exciting plans on the horizon, including their upcoming annual Night for the Fight on February 25th. In addition to needing high school participants, the fundraiser also needs lots of volunteers to make the night a success. More info and registration is live now at NightForTheFight.org.

Alex Piening

The organization was also recently awarded $1.2 million in grants that will allow them to then bestow 21 other grants between Cincinnati Children’s and Nationwide Children’s—18 New Idea Awards (their traditionally awarded research grant) and three new Accelerator Awards. “This will expedite the research and avoid lost time between initial proof-of-concept data discovery and then acquiring additional subsequent funding,” Cari explains. With CancerFree KIDS’ help, the evolution of science has never been faster—the capabilities of new technologies are more promising than ever. “Our funding will continue to allow scientists to leverage these technologies and discover new therapies that will be transformational to how we treat pediatric cancer,” Cari says. And the team can’t wait to see what the future holds in the fight against cancer. “Everyone at CancerFree KIDS truly cares about our mission and comes to work knowing that we are making a difference,” Cari continues. “Everyone has a wonderful attitude and cares about each person’s success … the people are what make CancerFree KIDS special.”

CLOSE TO HOME CancerFree KIDS’ mission is especially personal to Mary Piening—her grandson, Alex, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at just 22 months old. Upon discovering the mission of CancerFree KIDS, Mary and her family wanted to support and become involved with this incredible organization and its fundraising events. “It warms our hearts to see so many young high school students working together to help raise funds at the Night for the Fight,” Mary smiles. “The Celebration of Champions dinner and auction event in which the community comes together to honor these brave children is such an inspirational evening. One of our favorite events is the annual Butterfly Walk. Along with other families who form teams in honor or in memory of childhood cancer warriors, we gather together for Alexander’s Army. In addition to the walk and 5K, there are so many fun activities and great food for everyone to enjoy!” “Children should never have to endure this excruciating ordeal in order to survive,” Mary says. “But within this truth is the knowledge that we can make this better ... and we have no choice but to try.” CancerFreeKIDS.org | 420 W. A BALANCING ACT ARTICLE BY NICOLE BROWNING PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS BUSINESS IMAGE SERVICES

Fyzical Sets the Bar High for a Different Approach to Physical Therapy

When it comes to health, cutting corners is never an option. So if you’re looking for a physical therapy office, you’re bound to want someplace as unique as you, who can offer the proper healthcare you need and deliver an above-andbeyond experience. Fyzical Therapy and Balance Center does all that and more. With state-of-the-art equipment, a stunning facility, and a highly trained staff dedicated to providing the best treatment plan for you, Fyzical is the obvious choice. But what really sets Fyzical apart from the rest? Not only do they offer traditional physical therapy, they also have a strong focus on vestibular (the sensory organs in your ear that greatly affect your spatial awareness) and balance therapy. For many seniors and others with physical challenges, vestibular and balance therapy can offer a better quality of life for those who are at risk of falling. “Fyzical is spelled different because we are different. While we have trained therapists ready to treat all forms of PT needs for all ages, Fyzical’s unique focus on balance takes a whole different approach to treatment—we’re looking at the root cause of why people are hurting, and more than that, focusing on the fall risk issues,” promises Kimberly Rippe, owner of Fyzical Loveland. And it was exactly this side of Fyzical that inspired Kimberly, along with her husband, Joe, to bring Fyzical to the area. “We looked at more than 30 different franchises—when it came down to it, we wanted to start a business that would help people and give back to the community we’re in. Not just in making people feel better, but helping them to feel more independent and boost their confidence.” With the use of their high-tech harness system, Fyzical offers balance and fall-risk patients independence, allowing them to feel more stable while they follow their treatment plan and get back to optimal health quickly. For their daily activities and exercises, vestibular and balance patients work in harnesses that are attached to a rail system in the ceiling of the office. “It’s in the shape of the letter ‘E’ so patients can be on the treadmill, doing hurdles or steps, walking, or going through everyday motions while harnessed in,” Kimberly explains.

28

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

There’s more—the physical therapists who come to Fyzical receive special vestibular and balance training, too, so each patient is being treated by the best of the best in the balance field. And because Fyzical is an independent, locally owned franchise, Kimberly emphasizes how they personalize each individual’s care. “We can cater to what their doctors really want them working on, or what that person’s goals are … like getting ready to dance for a wedding, getting back on a sports field, being able to go out again, to not feel like they have to hold on to things every few steps.”

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM BALANCE THERAPY? And more importantly, who should be treated? That depends. “Balance issues can happen at any age,” Kimberly notes. “We see a lot of vertigo and concussion patients, Parkinson’s patients, and post-chemo patients, since chemotherapy can really offset balance.” So while typically many seniors may be at risk of falling, there isn’t one specific person who fits the bill, outside the parameters of experiencing symptoms of imbalance. So what are the warning signs everyone should be looking out for—in both themselves and loved ones? There are a few: having trouble walking, be it with balancing, taking short or narrow steps, or problems with curbs are all indicators. So is losing feeling in your feet, or medication that causes light-headedness or drowsiness. Being advised to use a cane or walker could also suggest you might benefit from balance therapy. Other common symptoms can include vertigo, imbalance, or feeling like you are tilting or going to fall. Light-headedness and motion sickness— which can be identified if wooziness, fogginess and even an irritated stomach are present—can also be signs that your balance could use some fine-tuning. Best of all, if you or a loved one has noticed any of these symptoms, Fyzical offers free consultations to get you started on the road to a better and balanced life. BENEFITS GALORE

What You’ll Gain From Fyzical’s Balance Therapy

1

| Regain Independence + Confidence

By using the harness system, Fyzical patients get to work through everyday actions in a safe and practical way—this helps grow your confidence, promoting independence throughout other aspects of life outside of the PT office.

2

| Increase Strength and Agility

Throughout balance therapy, you’re bolstering the muscles of your nervous system, in turn strengthening the rest of your body. With this new strength, you’ll also see your agility grow, which means better coordination, allowing you to be more efficient and work quickly.

3

| Joint Stability

While doing balance and vestibular therapy exercise, you strengthen your muscles, which in turn helps to stabilize and promote better joint health. With the promotion of general posture and strength, you’ll find your neck, hips, ankles, knees and shoulders all benefiting from balance therapy.

4

| Greater Coordination

As your whole body gets stronger with balance therapy, it allows everything to work harmoniously. You’ll find you have better control of your body and its actions—and better coordination in your daily movements.

Fuel

for the Fire Where the Passion Pours Out into Every Healthy Drink

ARTICLE BY STEPHANIE MEINBERG PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS BUSINESS IMAGE SERVICES

I walk through the unassuming double doors and immediately slow down. I breathe deeper, my shoulders relax. It feels … good in here. Peaceful. Powerful. Positive. There’s a tangible energy, is it the lights? The colors? The textures and tiles? I haven’t even gotten to the menu yet. Blended Fuel opened its doors after a 3-week whirlwind at the end of last September, tucked away behind an Ameristop and alongside a vet, taco shop and ice cream store. But it’s their Fields Ertel location, right next to I-71, that’s a signature of this smoothie shop. “I think we’re in such a good spot,” says owner Sammi Wendt. “One thing about this area, there’s not a lot of healthy fast-food options or coffee shops. So if you’re looking for something quick and healthy, there’s not much. Once people find us, they love it, especially in the mornings—they can stop in, then get right on the highway.”

With smoothies, coffee, refreshers, cereal bowls, overnight oats, parfaits and more, Blended Fuel has elevated the good-for-you shake trend to a whole new level. “I’ve been in the nutrition industry for 15 years, so our whole concept here is low sugar, low calorie, high protein, high nutrition,” Sammi reveals. “Everything on our menu tastes great, looks good, and can fit into anyone’s meal plan—that’s what’s really cool.” But the main focus? Community. This is more than just grab-and-go—Sammi collabs with local vendors for events, hosts meal prep classes, accountability groups, weight loss seminars. She’s also got an app for even faster ordering ahead. Talk about interactive. “A lot of people start their day here because they feel good when they leave. Or they’re having a bad day, and come in to feel lifted,” Sammi smiles. “We do it a little different than other places, building relationships with everyone who comes in. We don’t just blend stuff and hand it to them—we really have a conversation. There’s a lot of passion behind this.” Passion—and seriously delicious drinks. “We have one regular who comes in, and as she’s sipping and walking out the door, she turns around every time and yells, ‘It’s gonna be the best day ever!’ That makes you feel good.”

Waffle Wednesdays Here’s something to sink your teeth into—every Wednesday, there’s a new and tantalizing variety of waffle, each one packing a whopping 30 grams of protein but under 300 calories. Pro tip: get there early, they sell out fast.

BURGER AND A COKE “It’s what I tell customers because then it clicks,” Sammi laughs, why getting both a smoothie and refresher (or smoothie and coffee) equates. “One is your meal, one is your drink—only you’re getting 24 grams of protein and 240 calories or less for the whole thing.” As for flavors? Pick your favorite dessert craving—from chocolate to caramel to cheesecake and pie.

ALL THE DRINKS Whether you’re simply feeling low energy, need a meal replacement, or post-workout pick-me-up, every smoothie fits the bill—the difference lies in your preference for fat-burning, fiber, probiotics and more. And coffee? Oh yes, iced or hot, and super clean with only 2 grams of sugar and 100 calories (you read that right), including your copycat latte faves. Refreshers round out the list, some with aloe or tea, vitamins or immunity, great for both clean hydration and a caffeine kick.

GETTING BOWLED OVER Don’t forget overnight oats, energy shots, cereal bowls and protein parfaits. Some flavors change with the seasons, but the variety is built to fit anyone’s preference and palate. Overwhelming? A quick tutorial comes standard. “We give everyone the full lowdown on the menu,’” Sammi assures me. “It only takes like two minutes, and then they’re in a groove.” @Blended_Fuel 8683 Fields Ertel Rd, Cincinnati

Brusha, Brusha, Brusha (and More!) The Best of the Best for Your Little Ones

With the holidays winding down there is one thing that’s still lingering—all that pesky residue on your kiddo’s teeth. Remember the candy canes, sugar cookies and stocking candy? And don’t forget all those cups of hot chocolate with marshmallows. Well, it’s a new year—time to get back into good habits! Our very own Lauren Capozza, D.M.D. of Loveland Pediatric Dentistry shares her favorite products to achieve optimum oral health—while keeping kids comfortable (dare we say excited?) about their dental experiences. 1. Toothpaste: Plaque HD. Found on Amazon, this toothpaste stains the plaque light blue so kids can see where they have missed while brushing. 2. Toothbrush: Oral B (manual or electric). Always get soft bristles to protect your gums. 3. Floss: Platypus Orthodontic Flossers. These floss picks can also be used with braces—which makes the process so much easier. 4. Mouthwash: ACT. Count on tasty flavors for kids and the extra fluoride to help protect against cavities—more than brushing and flossing alone. 5. Reading reco: Daniel Goes to the Dentist. The perfect book for preparing your young child for his or her dental visit. Many children’s books mention teeth pulling or shots, which can cause unnecessary fears. 6. Chewing gum: Orbit (sugar-free). Sugarfree gum helps cut added sugar in daily diets and stimulates saliva, which helps coat and protect teeth.
