LIFESTYLE LETTER

Being Present as Your Present What brings you joy? I find myself asking this question a lot during this time of year. The truth is when I think of what brings me happiness, it’s not something you can put in a box—it’s those special moments where you are truly present (not just getting a present). As I look through our holiday issue, I see quite a few stories about people creating these moments or celebrating them. Or both. Example A: our cover story featuring the creative couple behind Vessel— they truly live their motto, “inspiration for home and life” by staging beautiful scenes or moments to be cherished during the present, but then captured digitally to keep forever. Or how about Mark, example B: the brains behind Love on Rails, LLC. Whether you’re a train enthusiast or young at heart, you can’t help but smile when you see one of his trains zip around a backyard carrying laughing kids and adults. Or maybe it’s example C: the thrill of hitting the open road and letting the world drift away as you go for a true joy ride. The BMW store has some suggestions on the perfect car for such an occasion, by the way. I hope you find some time this busy Christmas season to pause and get present and in the moment. With so much going on, it can be hard to do— but try and give it a go. You might just find that it’s the best present you could give yourself. Happy Holidays.

Meet Our New Hires We would like to introduce our newest team members—Office Managers Aspen and Driggs. They came highly recommended and have gotten right to work— making sure each day is bustling with activity, that we get plenty of exercise (in the form of long walks) and that each client who walks through the door is greeted promptly (within 2 seconds). Our only complaint is that they like to take too many snack breaks. “As the year comes to an end, we’d like to pause and thank our customers who have gotten us to where we are today. As we enter the new year, we look forward to the continued growth that comes from referrals and happy repeat clients.”

Greatest Gift of All UNWRAPPING 2024’S BEST FAMILY, SPORTS AND LUXURY BMW AUTOMOBILES

ARTICLE BY CHRIS SHERRITT PHOTOGRAPHY BY BMW USA

It’s difficult to believe, but another brand-new year is nearly here. And once you successfully navigate everything from soccer practices to the commute to the farmer’s market and back, it’s estimated you’ll spend nearly an hour (or more) a day in your car. That’s … a lot. So, why not enjoy the ride? Life is short, get the BMW—there’s so much in store for 2024. The new year brings more electric variants to the BMW lineup, including the all-new i5—the electric version of the iconic 5 Series that joins a growing list of EVs, including the i4, i7 and exclusively electric iX SUV. Prioritize power, range, style, or the perfect blend of all three. Even with all the buzz about electric, BMW remains committed to all of its customers, giving shoppers the option to choose between gasoline, hybrid and all-electric variants of the same body style. Experience the entire stunning 2024 lineup for yourself (nothing beats a holiday test drive).

Amp Up Your Gift Giving Alamo Electronics’ Must-haves for Every Audiophile and Tech Fanatic ARTICLE BY CARLY TAMBORSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

There’s always that one person who seems impossible to buy for every holiday season—your sports-fan sister, your movie-buff father, your tech-wizard brother, your cost-conscious spouse. What do they all have in common? Electronics are integral to their passions—but they can be incredibly hard to shop for. With Alamo Electronics, finding the perfect gift has never been easier. Tim May, Director of Integrated Solutions, and Shawn Amann, Store Manager, know the perfect presents to “wow!” everyone on your list.

For The Ultimate Entertainment Experience:

For the Best Sound Quality: 1. KEF LS50 Meta Bookshelf Speakers 2. Marantz Model 40 Integrated Amp “KEF is a British company that has sold speakers for 60 years,” Shawn explains. “They range in price from hundreds to hundreds of thousands because these speakers are that high performance—it’s high-quality for the audio enthusiast. Audio is an integral part to any electronic experience because it plays such a role in aiding emotional engagement, and these speakers are very precise. There’s a lot of diversity to choose from.”

For the Cost-Conscious:

1. Sony 77" XR77A95L OLED Television 2. Sony HT-A7000 Soundbar

1. Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC Turntable 2. Sonos® Move 2 Portable Speaker

“The Sony 77 is Sony’s best television,” Shawn shares. “It’s their flagship piece and has the best picture on the market—it’s something that drives the newer technology and is high-performing. This is for someone who really values state-of-the-art video performance—it’s top-of-the-line. There are some really good reviews about how it’s the greatest TV ever made … Sony’s newest generation of TVs have all the best technology, performance and picture.”

“Both of these pieces are reasonably priced for someone who wants to upgrade their original systems or add to them—but the turntable comes in many colors and is about the least expensive turntable we sell,” Shawn says. “I’ve sold these as gifts—this particular turntable has a lot of value for the money ... these aren’t chintzy little Bluetooth speakers. Clients (and their kids) are getting back into them. We’re really blessed that there are so many record stores around here.”

L E A R N M O R E : Alamo Electronics has been the area’s experts in audio and video sales, design and installation for more than 70 years. Carrying everything from the most well-known brands to the niche find for electronic enthusiasts, make Alamo part of your holiday list this year.

Hello, Doggy! TIPS FOR WELCOMING HOME A FAMILY’S NEW BEST FRIEND THIS HOLIDAY ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED There are few experiences more exhilarating than introducing a new puppy to the household, and Jeff Adler knows all about it. As an accomplished local dog trainer and owner of Off Leash K9 Training, his ability to train both people and pets about ways to make the most of their new relationship is making waves around Greater Cincinnati. Thinking of a new pup this Christmas? He’s got a few tips on what to do when introducing a young dog to your home.

DOG-PROOFING 101 “Prior to bringing your pup home, dog-proof your home,” Jeff recommends. “Set up a crate, install baby gates to limit areas the dog can access, take up anything loose on the floor the dog might chew on, and make sure there are no dangerous chemicals the dog can get into. Remember—the most important dog-proofing you can provide is 100% supervision.”

TAKE IT EASY “When meeting new family members, it’s easy for a dog to be overwhelmed,” Jeff says. “Introduce one person at a time, letting the dog come to each person on his or her own. Be patient—give your dog time to get used to his new family and environment.”

ROUTINE BUSINESS “Start a routine right away—it’s important to teach boundaries and structure from day one. Professional trainers like us can help, too.” Jeff explains that common routine and boundary training can include potty time, basic obedience, and walks to become familiar with surroundings.

BEST BEHAVIOR “Be observant of your dog’s movements, activity and behavior,” Jeff finishes. “This allows you to notice any behavior issues such as reactivity, food/toy aggression, how your dog responds to noises and movement, and how he or she responds to humans and other animals.” CincinnatiDogTrainers.com | 807 Loveland Madeira Rd, Loveland | 833.349.6959

ARTICLE BY NICOLE BROWNING PHOTOGRAPHY BY SPENCER AND KAITLYN JORDAN

Let It Glow ONE CREATIVE COUPLE INSPIRING PEOPLE TO TAKE THE ORDINARY AND MAKE IT EXTRAORDINARY There’s something inherently cozy and vibrant about the Christmas season. The holidays have a way of wrapping you up in a warm hug, bundling you in, bringing you closer to loved ones. Yet while it seems like once Christmas is over (and that feeling is dampened when all the holiday trimmings are packed up and put away), Vessel is here to remind you that this glorious, Yuletide-y feeling is never too far away—and can be felt year-round. “There’s this unity in the air … and somehow, some way, we at Vessel help inspire and show people they can have that Christmas warmth all year long,” explains owner Spencer Jordan. Spencer and Kaitlyn Jordan, co-owners of Vessel and husband and wife, welcomed me into their lofty studio apartment with a cup of tea and charcuterie, and as we sat on plush, pillowy couches and talked into the gloomy autumn night, it was impossible to miss that they are the definition of practicing what they preach.

Kaitlyn eloquently explains, “Vessel is a lifestyle brand and creative agency with a dream to inspire others and create beautiful places—first inside of themselves, and then expanding and building that life into their home or business.” Spencer’s background is in media, which he brings to the table through videography, branding design and photography, to name just a few of his offerings. Kaitlyn specializes in aesthetics and hospitality, focusing on the beauty of curating a space and the way warmth can be invited in with the right attention to detail. From rebranding a company to helping them welcome in clients, to event organization and design projects, there isn’t much Vessel won’t (can’t!) do. “We design weddings, proposals and special events, and we create media for brands and businesses,” Kaitlyn states simply. And it isn’t about creating an aesthetic to draw in the “likes,” or polishing the surface without bringing depth. Vessel represents the exact opposite. “We’re not trying to create a utopia and make people think life’s perfect. We’re trying to show people that you can create something so much more than just base-living.” Spencer and Kaitlyn are adamant that deepening the connection within communities will reflect outwardly, creating that warmth and pulling the inner beauty to the surface. And they want Vessel to be about so much more, too. “We’re launching a journal, and planning a podcast that will cover topics people want to hear about— whether it’s beautifying your space or uplifting your perspective. We want to inspire people to create atmospheres that enable others to feel at home and wanted,” Kaitlyn shares about Vessel’s plans, looking into the future. Vessel started out as an idea on a whiteboard after an inspired night out in Raleigh, North Carolina. Now, it’s an established, refined lifestyle brand right here in Cincinnati that cultivates beautiful moments for events, businesses and families alike. Love something specific you see on their Instagram? Soon enough, they’ll have a selection of their favorite home goods available online for purchase as well. Their tagline says it all—inspiration for home and life. InspiredVessel.com | @vesselinspired

All Aboard! B A C K YA R D R A I L R O A D S D E L I V E R F U N AT E V E R Y T U R N

It’s easy to lose track of time at the helm of a small-scale railway, navigating twists and turns on a customized personal path. Mark Fenbers, owner of Love on Rails, LLC, wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s a crazy life I live,” he says. “But I love it!” Mark has always been obsessed with trains, and it’s easy to hop on board with Mark’s train of thought: Love on Rails builds backyard railroads for the enjoyment of young and old alike. “I’ve loved trains all my life,” Mark explains. While attending a rail festival several years ago, he learned of a club that operated 1/8th-scale ride-on trains. The club eventually decided to sell a circle track they no longer needed, and—you guessed it!—Mark wound up the proud owner of his own track. Next, he had to decide what to do with it. “My intention was to set it up for hire at church festivals, birthday parties, or other social events,” he remembers, noting that he quickly realized factors like insurance and storage complicated that plan. “So,” Mark continues, “I decided to install the circle track in my own backyard. Over time, I added to the circle track, and now I

have two loop routes laid out in my backyard, and a siding along the garage.” After acquiring a small, pre-owned train, he was all set. “Family, friends, and neighbors all lit up once they saw it,” he recalls. And then made note of its growing popularity. “More and more, people wanted to ride on it, and told me how they wished they had something like this in their own backyard. So, this is where my business idea was born.” Project sizes range from a 60' diameter circle, to … well, the sky’s the limit, Mark explains. His own backyard track is partially on a trestle, goes over his pond, through a deck, and even has a functional railroad crossing signal. Track rails are made from aluminum, and ties are made from a thick, hardened, weather-resistant plastic. Mark estimates that tracks built with these materials should last for at least 50 years (how’s that for going the distance?). Then, once the tracks are in place, it’s up to clients whether they’d like to add a small-scale train or a simple hand cart. Either option is available through third-party vendors—and Mark is eager to help with that process, as well.

Picturing the need for an expansive property? Not so, says Mark. “Many assume their backyard isn’t big enough for a ride-on train,” he says. “But, surprisingly, it can fit in much smaller spaces than most people realize. For example, my entire lot is just under a half acre, yet I have two routes of train tracks in my backyard—a backyard that also includes a swimming pool, a large deck, a pond and stream, a firepit with built-in seating benches, and a shed for my mowers.” Mark explains that his biggest joy is in seeing his clients’ reactions. “When I built the large-scale railroad in my own backyard, or when clients bring people out to see my progress, their responses are over-the-top in positivity,” he smiles. “Even people who aren’t inherently fascinated with trains light up when seeing my work for the first time!”

Speaking of—the time is right, Mark suggests, to begin thinking about what Love on Rails can do for you. “Winter is the best time to get a free estimate so that work can begin as soon as the weather is conducive to working outside, usually April,” he shares. Clients are served on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier a client commits, the sooner Mark can schedule the project. “I do what I do because I love it,” Mark says. “I love building things, and I love railroads—now I get to build railroads, which merges my two loves into one mega-love! I look forward to working on these projects every day.” “In fact, I love it so much that I’ll give $500 off installation costs to anyone who mentions they saw this article in Loveland Lifestyle.” He also appreciates noticing the joy that his work brings to so many in the community. “The smiles are priceless,” Mark says. “Especially on adults!” LoveOnRails.com | 513.305.8705

Lessen the Holiday Stress With Budget Advice from Vantage Financial ARTICLE BY ELIZABETH A. LOWRY

4 Tips for Balancing the Holiday Budget Implement these ideas now to get more enjoyment out of your holidays later.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MEINBERG The holidays fall at the same time every year, yet I always wait till the last minute to start shopping, spending way too much, way too quickly, and blowing my budget (if there was even one to begin with). After all, there’s always next year, right? If you’re like me and have trouble sticking to a budget (this month or all year long), the experts at Vantage Financial can help.

’TIS THE (SPENDING) SEASON Wealth and Tax Advisor Jarrod Hart, CFP®, ChFC®, CRPS®, says that a budget is essential for finding balance and avoiding holiday financial stress.“Financial stress often accompanies the season as people tend to spend more on gifts, travel and hosting. Social and family pressures can push individuals to exceed their budgets, while clever marketing and great sales can lead to impulsive spending,” he shares. “To manage this stress and avoid long-term financial consequences, effective budgeting and planning are crucial.”

HOW VANTAGE FINANCIAL HELPS Vantage Financial meets their clients where they are, helping clients with individual goals. Implementing a budget is one way to help people take charge of their finances—both around the holidays and throughout the year. “The budgeting process is one piece of the financial planning puzzle, and it looks different for everyone,” Jarrod says. “However, the general principles remain the same— clarifying, quantifying, and prioritizing personal and financial goals.” While Jarrod admits budgeting is a learned skill and sticking to it during the holidays is a challenge, he reminds us that now is the hardest part—if you stick to your plan now, the rest of the year should be easier. “Prove to yourself this holiday season that you can follow a budget—and start the year off with healthier financial habits and less consumer debt,” Jarrod says. Interested in financial planning or need help budgeting from a company who will partner with you to help achieve your financial goals? Vantage Financial offers in-person and virtual consultations. 1| To avoid buyer’s remorse and high credit card balances, be sure to plan for the season by creating a “holiday fund” and slowly put money aside throughout the year. (Review last year’s holiday expenses in advance and expect to spend 4-5 percent more this year.)

2| If you didn’t (or can’t) plan 11 months ahead, that’s okay. Start budgeting as far out as you can and stick to it. Start shopping earlier if possible to spread out your purchases.

3| Set holiday spending limits with relatives and friends.

4| Remember: Simple is better, and personalized or homemade gifts are acceptable, too. The best memories are made by spending time with loved ones.

Smart Cookie THE SECRET BEHIND THIS LOCAL BAKERY’S SIGNATURE FROSTING

Photo provided

Royal icing? Step aside. Begone, you brittle, tasteless topping. You once ruled on eye appeal alone, but no more. Cookies (tastebuds!) deserve better. And lo and behold, we’ve found it—thanks to the brother-sister team at A Spoon Fulla Sugar. While this bakery is known for wedding cakes, they’re quickly becoming the go-to for thick-cut, buttercream-adorned, stunningly decorated sugar cookies. A new monarch reigns supreme. What’s more— they’re sharing their family’s frosting secret.

40

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Sugar Cookie Buttercream Frosting Ingredients:

• 1 lb unsalted butter • 1½ lb powdered sugar (10X) • Splash of vanilla

Directions:

Soften the butter. Sift the powdered sugar. In a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar until smooth and creamy. Mix in the vanilla. Spread on cookies, pipe decorations using a pastry bag; embellish with nonpareils or sprinkles.

“The Bengals playoffs were really huge—that’s another thing that put our cookies on the map,” Alex says. “We were doing so many! And that was fun, because before each playoff game, we’d come up with different designs and go off the storyline from the game before.” No doubt Jamie has a true talent for making this buttercream look as stunning as it tastes. But see for yourself—that frosting recipe is pretty straightforward. So what is it about these cookies? Alex and Jamie laugh, loud and unfettered as only close siblings do. You can tell they enjoy working together. “It’s a simple basic icing recipe,” Alex says with a grin. “But we use quality Mexican vanilla. The storebought stuff isn’t good.” I pipe up with a quip about that making all the difference. “Yeah, it does,” agrees Jamie. “It really does.” Try their frosting recipe on your own, or skip the mixer and go straight to the source. A Spoon Fulla Sugar is open for walk-in service only on Fridays and Saturdays (with a holiday bakery case stocked full, all month)—but if you’re worried about missing out, they always take call-ahead and online orders.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MEINBERG

“Royal icing cookies look great, but you almost don’t want to eat them because you know they don’t taste good.” Alex Martin speaks the truth. Together with his sister Jamie Carlson, they’re mixing up sweet, sugar-laden magic at A Spoon Fulla Sugar. “We try to make everything taste as good as it looks.” “That’s important to us,” Jamie adds. “We don’t want to be your run-of-the-mill place, so we really put more time and effort into everything.” And it shows. One buttery-rich whiff just walking through their door is all the convincing you need. Beyond the bakery case, their entire talented team is hard at work on pans and pans of cakes, cut-out cookies and Lil’ Spoonies—think cup o’ cake layered with mousse, cream cheese or buttercream. I wanted to know if they had a favorite. “Chocolate cake with Oreo mousse.” No hesitation from Alex. “Hummingbird cake is usually my standard,” admits Jamie. “But then I’d say our chocolate cake … we grew up on that, my mom and my aunt’s recipe.” It’s a family affair. Alex and Jamie’s sister Jennifer opened the bakery’s doors back in 2008, passing the official torch to her siblings almost a decade later. Alex estimates they now create about 300 wedding cakes alone each year. “We helped Jennifer pursue her dreams by working for her when she opened. Then I ended up taking over full-time,” shares Alex. “Now, the cookies have turned into a full-time job for Jamie, too.” “For a while, I don’t think people knew about our cookies,” laughs Jamie. A la ‘secret menu’ around the holidays. “Then people were like wait a minute, I can get these all the time?!” Yes, yes you can (and speaking from experience, you should).

Giving Campaign

2023 44

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

The official fun kicks off at 4p, with a Winter Wonderland of activities and performances—face painting, train rides, live music and strolling carolers—plus festive eats and treats galore. Don’t forget to visit Santa—both at the “North Pole” downtown and taking pics with doggos at Loveland Paddlesports! LMRChamberAlliance.org/events/ DE C EM BE R 1 9 T H
