LIFESTYLE LETTER

We’re Turning Five! In November 2018, Loveland Lifestyle’s first issue hit mailboxes, and man what a ride it has been. That’s 60 issues completed! And I could never have done it without the help of all the people I’m going to thank in this letter. To all my partners who have been part of this journey—past and present. Thank you for your support, your stories, and your belief that this magazine can make a difference. To hear that your business has grown, or a new customer stopped by, or you feel more connected to the community because of the magazine means everything. You have helped shape this magazine. Thank you! To my editor, Miss Steph Meinberg. I still remember our first lunch meeting. I don’t think either of us knew what would unfold—or how we would emerge forever changed by this project. All our writers love you because you care about them and their work. Thank you for being your amazing self. Courtney Kraemer, my Sales Support Director and Social Media Coordinator, you have vision, girl! You encourage me to take things to the next level and I love that. We grew this magazine to 68 pages this year—and you had a lot to do with that. Your energy is infectious, and I love how excited you get about a new project. I am so grateful for you, and I appreciate you. To all our writers—thank you for keeping the magazine out of the recycle bin. No, seriously. Now, I am all for recycling, but so many people stop me and say, “I keep every issue because I love reading them over and over again!” That’s all you guys! You write the stories that people want to read and reread. Thank you for sharing your amazing gifts with our readers. To our main photographer, Matt Capps. If I had a dollar for every time someone commented on a cover photo you shot, I would have enough money for a really good meal at Jeff Ruby’s. You have the eye, the talent, you just have it! Thank you for making this magazine so visually stunning. And of course, I can’t forget all of you readers. Thank you for taking the time to read each issue and even this letter, too. Thank you for believing in us.

Holiday traditions. Some are eye-roll worthy (you love them still). Others are steeped in nostalgia, that sweet sorrow of wistful remembrance. Still others are new, hopeful to be invited back to the annual table. Magnolia Springs Loveland has one of its own—a vibrant, versatile (oh-so-easy) recipe they’re excited to share, in the hopes it becomes your get-together go-to. This classic marinara is uncomplicated and unabashedly delish (it’s all in the tomatoes)—a kitchen staple perfect for pasta, pizza, parmigiana and more. It’s the foundation of the senior living community’s annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser, the proceeds of which benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati. Even more to give thanks for? This event’s generous sponsors, Edward Jones of Loveland and Home Instead. Dine in or drivethrough (but please RSVP, suggested donation $10/meal)—Wednesday, November 8 from 4–6pm.

FIVE TIPS FOR A HAPPILY-EVER-AFTER VISIT TO WALT DISNEY WORLD

ARTICLE BY PAMELA MCWHORTER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

24

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

“We’re going to Disney World!” Those five words can mean untold joy for millions (and millions), from parents of young children to Super Bowl winners. Where else can you dine with a princess, fly on a banshee, ride a pirate ship, and end the day with Happily Ever After Fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle? But as every parent who’s ever pushed a stroller there knows, the “most magical place on earth” can also be the most exhausting spot on the planet—with high humidity, at that. It’s no wonder, because Walt Disney World Resort, aka WDW, is not a small world, after all. It’s a massive, sprawling kingdom unto itself with four theme parks, two water parks, entertainment venues, a shopping district and more than 25 themed resort hotels (yes, 25), not to mention a relative handful of non-Disney hotels. All this, and the resort has still only used about half of its 39 square miles of land. Whew! So, before all that magic turns into madness for your family, Renee Gorman, an independent travel agent with Magical Moments Vacations, suggests you take a breather—a palate cleanser, so to speak— during your time at the park.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY WDW ACTIVITIES … THAT AREN’T IN A THEME PARK DINE AT A DISNEY RESORT—OR TWO. See the wonderful world of Disney by way of breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Pick a few of your favorite resorts and head to one of their lounges. Grab a quick bite, maybe a cocktail, then take the Monorail or Skyliner and head over to the next spot. Renee’s recommendations include Steakhouse 71 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and Wine Bar George at Disney Springs. You can also dine with the dinosaurs at the T-Rex restaurant (also Disney Springs). Prefer to sit down to a meal with the princesses? Renee recommends making reservations as soon as possible (usually open 60 days prior to your stay).

PUTTER AROUND WITH SOME MINIATURE GOLF. Good things come in pairs, which is why there are TWO miniature golf locations at Walt Disney World Resort—Fantasia Gardens, inspired by Disney’s animated classic, and Winter Summerland, Santa’s off-season golf retreat. Who knew? Now, you do—it’s also good to know that when you stay on a Disney property, you get one complimentary session of miniature golf.

SHOP, DINE AND PLAY LIKE A LOCAL AT DISNEY SPRINGS. Even though Disney Springs is part of Walt Disney World, you don’t need a ticket or reservation to enter. With 97 shops, 69 dining options and 22 attractions, shows and events, Disney Springs offers a nearly endless array of activities—including live music, gourmet meals, Vintage Amphicar rides, or World of Disney store shopping.

CATCH A FEW FISH OR GO ON A HORSE RIDE. Casting about for something relaxing to do? Take a break from the crowds with a guided fishing excursion, or simply fish from the dock at one of Disney’s lakes. Pontoon boat rental is also available at Wilderness Lodge. There’s also horseback riding at Circle D Ranch, which is where all of the park’s performing horses live. You can sign up for pony rides at your hotel or call directly.

WATCH A MOVIE UNDER THE STARS. Find a quiet moment of Disney magic by cozying up with a tasty treat and enjoying a classic Disney movie at the end of a long day in the park. Almost all the resorts offer movies under the stars, and you don’t even have to stay at that particular spot to watch the screening.

At Walt Disney World, the magic never stops—but sometimes you need to. A well-timed break can really enhance your Disney experience and the memories you make there. And when you return to the park, don’t worry. Mickey, Minnie and all the wonderful world of Disney will still be waiting. MagicalMomentsVacations.com/mmv-renee-gorman-oh 201.819.8417

Family. This time of year, it’s family we think of, turn to, celebrate with, give thanks for … those we’re connected to by birth; those we’ve chosen as our own along the way. Five years ago, we brought this magazine to life, and welcomed you into our lives (into each other’s lives). We chose you—the people and nonprofits and boutiques and businesses. We told your stories, shared your triumphs, felt your worries, championed your pursuits. And to no one’s surprise, you became more than our community. You became family. And, as families are wont to do around the holidays, we reminisce. Often with smiles, sometimes with tears, always with love and gratitude and wonder in our hearts. There were some who questioned if we’d run out of stories—our neighborhood is only so big, right? But we never doubted there’d always be so much (and more) to tell. Looking back, it seemed fitting for us to share the ones that stood out. “One of my favorite issues was June 2020,” says Emily Barlow, publisher. “It was in the heart of COVID, and we wanted to bring a message of hope to the community, so we asked our partners to share why they loved a specific local business—coffee shops, salons, restaurants, gyms, to name a few. Everyone was excited to share their favorites.” “Our magazine was reaching people stuck at home,” Emily remembers. “So to be able to offer uplifting messages was nothing short of incredible. When I read that issue now, I get chills. It’s a time capsule. I love seeing how far we’ve come, and I’m reminded of just how strong and supportive this town I call home is.” “My favorite issue has to be either the first or the last,” laughs Stephanie Meinberg, editor. “That inaugural issue was totally uncharted territory, and seeing it in print the first time—that was something else … the accomplishment, the pride, the excitement.” “But I’m just as awestruck and amazed by every issue since—each one still knocks me over,” Steph continues. “Of course, I remember certain stunning pics, punny-perfect headlines, stories I got to tell alongside the absolutely brilliant writing from the incredible team we’ve been blessed with over the years … but they’re all my favorites. All of them. I’m so proud of everything we’ve done.” “Choosing a favorite? That’s a challenge! Loveland Lifestyle has featured countless inspiring stories,” smiles Courtney Kraemer, sales support director and social media coordinator. “In May 2020, before I began working for LLM, Emily wanted me to write about the nonprofit I worked for, Pink Ribbon Girls—little did I know it would lead to a career change!” “At that time, Emily’s sister-in-law and social media manager, Mandy, was diagnosed with breast cancer,” Courtney says. “I was able to introduce her to Pink Ribbon Girls, and she got involved—even spoke at one of their events. Loveland Lifestyle has a unique way of bringing people together— it’s what I cherish most about it.” So, to all of you—our community, our family—thank you for the most memorable five years with us. We can’t wait to see what the next five brings.

RETREAT ON THE RIVER

The Watershed

The Heist

ESCAPE FROM IT ALL AT THE WATERSHED

How many times have you driven past something and never really noticed it? Take, for example, the houses on Davis Road— you know the ones past Rich Road, down the hill where the street meets up with the Little Miami? I think about the dozens of times I have driven that route, passing a pair of nondescript, cedar-shingled homes off to the left, my attention drawn instead to the right, off toward the sweeping views of the river. Perhaps there was never really a good reason to notice them ... until now. The buildings, along with a boathouse, a landing dock and the nearly three acres of riverfront, parklike grounds they sit on, are all now a part of the Watershed, a renovated, historic-property-turned-AirBNB—thanks to property owners Dave and Paulette Yarosz.

PAULETTE’S WATERSHED MOMENT A designer and marketer by trade, Paulette says she’s innately drawn to creating happy, inviting spaces with an

eye toward good design in both form and function. She’s also no stranger to historic renovations, having reno’d homes in Norwood, Indian Hill and St. Louis. However, it wasn’t until after a recent family vacation that Paulette and Dave considered taking on a project water-side. “We found ourselves wishing that we had a little property of our own on the water, but much closer, so we could just pop out there with the kiddos any time we wanted,” she shares. After starting a search for a lake house within a threehour drive (that also included nearby shopping and amenities) to no avail, the properties on Davis appeared. “We never considered a riverfront option, but the pictures and description were intriguing, so we called our realtor and asked to see it,” Paulette explains. “To say we were sold right away is an understatement—it felt like we drove down the hill and took a right at paradise!”

The Heist

Fun Fact: The Heist isn’t just a cutesy name. This building played a role in a true art heist—a stolen Rembrandt from the Taft Museum was revealed to be under the cabin’s steps in 1973. Fun Fact: There was also “buried treasure” found at The Heist: A giant stone patio around the firepit that was so buried over the years, no one knew it was there. Fun Fact: While there are two parking spaces for each house, there’s plenty of parking for additional cars on the lower driveway. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The Lookout

If I take on a major renovation, I believe it’s my duty to respect the people who built it, the families who lived in it and the new life I can breathe into it. Since the properties were in need of extensive renovations, Paulette says they realized they would need to subsidize the expenses with short-term rental income. A search led them to partner with Drew Homan, an experienced property manager who now helps with the AirBNB side of the rental of the two newly updated abodes.

THE LOOKOUT Fun Fact: There’s a new kayak rack right by the river—bring your ’yaks, if you like! Plus, keep an eye out for two additional riverside amenities soon to be complete for more water access and fun—The Boathouse and The Launch. Fun Fact: If you live in the area and are hosting a holiday, this is the ideal spot for your family to stay. Whether you have your Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas dinner there, or just want a fun, comfortable place for everyone to hang out together (that’s not YOUR house), this is the perfect solution! Fun Fact: Each house (or both!) can be staged for the holidays before you or your guests arrive. From Thanksgiving to Christmas to NYE decorations, the team has the ornaments and options to make your stay fully festive. Fun Fact: Nearly every guest has commented on how unbelievably comfortable all the beds and pillows are—no worries about getting a great night of sleep. Fun Fact: If the weather is cold or crummy, there are loads of puzzles, games and a two-player arcade video game to keep everyone entertained.

Constructed in 1900, The Lookout is the “main” house on the property, and was originally used for family gatherings and summer fun. While some updates were made over the past 120 years or so, the Yaroszs really revamped the space—leveling floors, adding and remodeling bathrooms and bedrooms, opening up the floor plan, adding a laundry room, installing new plumbing and electric, adding a completely new, modern kitchen and so much more. Now the four-bedroom, three-bathroom space sleeps up to 14 people, and there’s the convenience of on-site parking and direct access to the Little Miami and a natural creek—providing hours of relaxation and fun.

THE HEIST Built in 1860, the nearby rustic cabin went from a utilitarian, barebones, hunting and fishing shack to a fully renovated, two-bedroom, one-bathroom home sleeping up to 6. The Yaroszs updated The Heist’s HVAC system, fully restored the wood-burning stove, built a new roof, added skylights (with direct river views), added all-new plumbing and flooring, remodeled the bathroom and added a new hearth, among other improvements. In addition, the ceilings on both screened porches were reinforced, where the Yaroszs added tons of comfy, swinging, gliding furniture and a private campfire area. A brand-new hot tub awaits Heist guests, too (or anyone renting the full property).

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Now, if you’ve ever wanted to get away from it all (without actually having to go too far), the Watershed checks all the boxes. Rent one or both properties for a romantic weekend, a friend's getaway, or to host gatherings or house extended family for the holidays or other events. “The Watershed was built as a place to unplug and reconnect with friends and family,” Paulette smiles. “As the holidays approach, I’m excited for guests to experience and take advantage of well-appointed kitchens, large dining tables, ample couch seating, comfy Adirondacks around large firepits and outdoor spaces—to soak in the beautiful seasonal changes in Loveland.” WatershedLoveland.com | 9051 Davis Rd, Loveland | 513.500.7197

“We believe that something as simple as brewing your morning cup of coffee can make an impact on our world,” says owner Kim Meidal. “Our coffees are all sustainably sourced from small farms across the globe—so drinking our coffee makes a difference in the lives of the farmers, their families and their communities!” Kim and her family micro-roast ethically sourced, specialty coffee beans right in their Maineville backyard. “We offer a rotation of single-origin coffees in limited batches, featuring a new one every month,” she says. “Each bag comes with a custom-designed card sharing that coffee’s story—the people, places and processing methods that were essential in making it great.” Kim’s passion for coffee kicked up in high school, when she’d serve delicious drinks to patrons and friends alike. It wasn’t long before she began experimenting with roasting at home—and the rest is history. In addition to bags of freshly roasted coffee, The Backyard Beanery offers corporate gift packages, bulk orders, coffee subscriptions, cascara (coffee cherry tea), coffee drippers, gift cards, mugs and more, including Bean Bark. “Think chocolate-covered espresso beans, but better!” Kim promises. The Split Leaf Co TheSplitLeafCo.com 10 Miranda St, Morrow “As a solo mama and a veteran with PTSD, I found that planting and experimenting with plants was a great outlet—it offered a lot of healing and comfort, having greenery around the home,” says owner Samantha Watts. “I wanted to share the calming effects and rewarding benefits of growing plants with others, so I started to share them online and attend local craft markets.” The Split Leaf Co also holds workshops, where attendees get to craft their own plant creation and learn about its care. These are commonly held as ticketed or private affairs—from birthday or corporate parties to individual celebrations, team-building functions and hands-on events (both off-site and in her new brick-and-mortar shop). Samantha is driven and inspired by the unique and different ways to display plants that not many people know about. “You learn more about the plants and how resilient they are,” she enthusiastically shares. “And in the end, you have a one-of-a-kind creation for your home!”

Gather

Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table. Candlesticks, vases, little pumpkins and gourds, or fall decor you have on hand can make a great centerpiece. Add fresh flowers or dried foliage for that extra layer of texture and color.

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top of a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. Inspired by wooded acreage, the Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition and perfect for marrying nature with traditional elegance. Dating back to 1831, the collection features various animals centered by the British Flowers border. This French antique dining room set was chosen for an intimate gathering for four. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware, and mix gold flatware with antique silver water pitchers, delicate salt and pepper shakers and your favorite trays.

Holiday Road HANDY ROAD-TRIP TIPS SO YOUR JOURNEY GOES OFF WITHOUT A HITCH Over the river and through the woods, to our roadside assistance number we go—with all the heartwarming anticipation of seeing those we’ve missed most, none of us wants to be that family. Hence, a few helpful reminders to keep the “happy” in your holidays, and travel safely!

BEFORE YOU GO • Let a trusted neighbor know you’ll be traveling. • You’ve done the basics, but is your car due for a dealer service? • Visit the U.S. Department of Transportation website to check your route for possible delays. • You can also look for active weather alerts at NOAA’s website, Weather.gov.

ON THE ROAD • While traveling through unfamiliar areas, stay aware—keep security and safety top of mind. • Review the emergency evacuation route from your hotel room. • Discuss a detailed plan with your family, in the event you become separated.

ENJOY PEACE OF MIND Is your auto insurance policy up to date, or in need of a quick checkup? Local Loveland Shelter Insurance agent, Ricky Heflin, has you covered. In addition to award-winning customer service and great rates, Shelter Insurance has received an “A” for Excellent from AM Best. A local agent like Ricky can provide a Personal Protection Review to help you design a plan that’s particular to you. Best of all? Shelter agents offer a variety of insurance options—from auto, home, life and business to “fun” stuff like RVs, boats ATVs and more.
