LIFESTYLE LETTER

From The Bottom of My Heart ... This November marks our four-year anniversary—and what a remarkable year it’s been! I think year one, everyone was just wondering why we were popping up in people’s mailboxes. Year two (which included most of 2020) … well, we all know what happened that year. Year three, we really hit our stride, and year four has just been incredible. We have shared so many fantastic stories and really made a difference in the community—which was always the vision. I’d like to take the time to thank everyone who has helped make this magazine a success over the last year… so here I go! Readers, thank you for continuing to look forward to each new issue. I love when someone stops me as I pass out magazines and says, “I love reading this magazine.” Makes my day every time! Thank you, loyal partners. You believe in us and this community, and I am honored to work with all of you ... and to share your stories as well! To all of my writers and photographers—you are the reason people continue to pick up Loveland Lifestyle issue after issue. I get so excited to read and see your work in the pages of this magazine. Thank you for being so wildly talented. I do need to give a shoutout to our main photographer, Matthew Capps. You always take your images to the next level, and it has taken Loveland Lifestyle to the next level, too! Thank you, Matt! Stephanie Meinberg, my editor, my friend … thank you for collaborating with me month after month. Who could have imaged when we met 4+ years ago for lunch how this magazine would impact our lives and where we would be today? You keep the editorial a well-oiled machine, and for that you deserve a 100+ thank yous! Courtney Kraemer, you have brought a lot to the table since joining our team last year. From social media to client relations and marketing, you take on each project with enthusiasm and dedication. I love your passion and drive. You always have the best ideas! Thank you for helping to grow this magazine. I’m so grateful for you. Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this letter. A lot goes into each edition of Loveland Lifestyle, and I am so grateful that I get to say thank you to everyone who has played a role.

SAW Pilates is bringing color and joy to Loveland! The side of the studio felt bare, so owner Annette Friesner decided to liven up the space with a mural created by Tom Post (and his assistant). The studio’s name derives from Annette’s three children—Silas, Abram, and Wren. Wren’s wild, curly hair is depicted in the mural, and the boys are represented by a raven and a blue jay, local birds the boys share similar traits with.

HobbyTown’s remote-control vehicles aren’t the only thing on the move—the store has relocated to Montgomery Road, south of Fields Ertel. Whether you’re a hobbyist, a beginner, or someone looking for great gifts this holiday season, HobbyTown has it all. With games and puzzles, toys and trains, the options are endless. This new location has also set up a mini RC track at the front of the shop with hills, ramps and jumps to boot.

November 11 is Veterans Day, and what better way to honor this day than with the story of a Loveland-local veteran. Bill McFall was featured as the Veteran of the Month by Veterans Care Coordination, a home care company that advocates to keep senior veterans in their homes. In 1966, Bill chose to enlist in the United States Air Force, and served in the Vietnam war. Read Bill’s inspiring story, available at VCCHC.com/Bill-McFallveteran-of-the-month-august-2022

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE

the show goes on THE PLAYS, PAUSES, PAST + PRESENT OF LOVELAND’S VERY OWN COMMUNITY THEATER ARTICLE BY NICOLE BROWNING

Hello Dolly, Photo Credit: Nancy Downing

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of the theater—the moment the lights dim and the curtains rise, you know you’re going to partake in a magical experience unlike any other. From dramas to comedies to musicals, endless opportunities await you on the stage. Luckily, you don’t have to go far to experience all the theater has to offer—Loveland Stage Company is here to prove there’s no business like show business. It began with Pat Furterer and 11 others in 1979, and with the help of locals volunteering their time, the Loveland Stage Company has now been around for more than 40 years. From the start, LSC has been a nonprofit endeavor. “We do the shows just to make enough money to maintain and do another show,” says Donna Treinen, who’s been with LSC since 2005 and has worn about every hat, from directing to dancing to being on the board. “And we’ve never lost money on a show, in all 40+ years,” adds Joshua Marcus, the current vice president of the board who’s been with the company since 2018. But everything for the stage company came to a halt in 2020 when Covid-19 shook things up. “The last show that was up here was Gypsy,” Joshua remembers. “I believe they got one weekend in before they closed down.” Then the question became, how

does a theater survive when large gatherings are impossible? The board continued to meet throughout the shutdown, and soon LSC Radio was born. Harkening back to radio shows of old, the stage company decided to turn to recordings. In August of 2020, a recording of The Importance of Being Earnest was released. For October, it was A Midsummer Night’s Dream; December brought a holiday show. All the performances were recorded in two formats—audio or audio-visual. “We were behind plexiglass and separated so that we could emote without masks on,” recalls Joshua. From voice acting to old-school sound effects, these shows were a creative solution for the award-winning stage company to keep putting out productions in a safe way during a pandemic, and are still available on LSC’s website. But the show must go on, right? The company has since enjoyed a nearly full season back since covid-craziness. Opening with their youth summer theater (a workshop that spotlights Loveland’s talented young thespians) and including three other productions, 2021 proved that the pandemic didn’t slow them down despite the challenges. “When we did Hello Dolly, we rehearsed solely with masks on,” Donna says of their most recent production.

“We did have a show where we lost half the cast in the middle of rehearsal, and our amazing volunteers were able to step up and put on an amazing show … the audience never realized that half a dozen of those people only had a week or two of rehearsal,” Joshua adds. And what can we expect from them in the future? “We need to continue to grow and evolve,” Donna remarks. From actors, singers and dancers to lighting, sound and costume crew, LSC is always looking to add new talent to their already amazing team. Despite a year of the unusual, LSC is still going strong with a full 2022-2023 season, and so far, can boast no drop in attendance in the way of performers or attendees. From their Saturday morning dance classes to their upcoming participation in Christmas in Loveland, the Loveland Stage Company is back in full swing. LovelandStageCompany.org 111 S. Whether you personally enjoy politics or can’t stand to even think about them, it’s hard to keep your political feelings and your investment thoughts separate. The truth is election cycles are short and investing is a marathon that demands unemotional focus. Markets tend to go down leading into midterms. Markets tend to go up the year following midterms. Markets tend to favor political gridlock (split Congress). Short-term volatility consistently loses out to long-term market and economic trends. Don’t let politics guide investment decisions. Focus on factors you can control like your risk tolerance and cash flow management.

Cutting Through the Confusion of Medicare + Health Insurance

ARTICLE BY BILL FURBEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS BUSINESS IMAGE SERVICES

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

Were you ready for October 15? That’s when Medicare’s enrollment period kicked off this year, and there are a lot of new options to consider—even if you’re already happily enrolled. That’s where Sherry Harbin, a licensed insurance agent with HealthMarkets Insurance Agency, can help. “Open enrollment can be a confusing time,” she says. “Everyone should call or meet with an agent to better understand the new plans, and to make sure they have a plan that best meets their needs.” With only so many hours available in the day, it’s important for people to speak with someone like Sherry soon. “I help seniors navigate the Medicare maze, as well as assist individuals, families and small businesses with their health insurance needs,” she explains. “We spend hours reviewing changes to Medicare plans on our own—so we can help you better understand the benefits of other plans.” Plus, Sherry’s help comes fast. “We usually have answers in about 30 minutes or less,” she says. “It’s the smartest half-hour investment you’ll make.” Best of all, Sherry’s services are free—consultations cost you nothing. While Sherry’s part of a larger HealthMarkets network, she’s also proud of her local ties—having moved to Loveland almost 20 years ago, Sherry now lives in Maineville with her family. She also belongs to both the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance and the MADE Chamber in Mason. Community, she says, is important. So is conversation. “I always offer to meet with those who are looking into Marketplace plans—as well as those who have Medicare—so I can really help them navigate the process,” Sherry says. Close to home, she’s excited that HealthMarkets is growing in our own area to better meet this community’s needs. “I’m licensed in numerous states (including Ohio and Kentucky), but really love to work within my local and surrounding communities,” she says. “It’s important to me that I meet people in person whenever possible.” Of course, everyone has different concerns. Before enrolling in any Medicare plan, Sherry advises clients to consider three crucial components:

PRESCRIPTIONS Which medications are you taking, and which ones might you need to start taking? The formulary list for the Medicare Advantage plan you’re currently on might change in the coming year. It’s crucial to understand how much your medications might cost or if they’ll be covered.

PROVIDERS “Provider lists tend to stay pretty stable from year to year,” Sherry points out. But what you might want to consider on the provider side of a Medicare plan is whether or not a specialist you’ll be seeing this year is also on that list.

PLAN DESIGN Alright, so you’ve reviewed prescription coverage and the provider list, and now it’s time to consider other plan differences. Every plan has its own “sweet spots” that make it different from others. For example, co-pay rates will vary from plan to plan—and that’s a big component to evaluate. Whether you’ve got questions, concerns or just need clarification on options and plans, count on Sherry to be your go-to expert—and local advocate. big fish “For nearly a quarter of a century, we’ve been bringing fresh seafood to the Greater Cincinnati area,” says Allison Simmons, resident fishmonger at long-time Loveland staple, Seafood Station. But if cooking fresh fish has you in a cold sweat, never fear—they not only carry the best in fine seafood, but they also teach you the best ways to prepare it, with recipes and recommendations. “If we’re able to help our customers create a delicious meal for their loved ones, then they’ll come back for more.” Ready to get cooking?

Salmon “This is a popular fish that can be prepared easily in a number of ways—baked, fried or grilled,” Allison explains. It’s also an easy crowd-pleaser. “Salmon is a universally likable option for a dinner party … even the fussiest eater can be won over with a beautifully grilled fillet of salmon.” Bonus? Salmon is loaded with nutrients and is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. And with a number of varieties, Seafood Station is ready to advise you on the best type and portion for the perfect meal.

Halibut “Halibut is best prepared either on a grill or panfried,” Allison says. “Personally, I like it pan-fried and dressed with a light sauce.” Think lemon and capers, or fresh herbs in butter. Like salmon, halibut is rich in heart-healthy nutrients. It’s also related to flounder, so is lean and finely textured, presenting a mild flavor. Word to the wise, it can dry out quickly if overcooked, so ask for pro cooking tips from the Seafood Station team.

TROUT

Trout Trout is readily available year-round and familiar to most diners. “There are so many ways to appreciate trout,” Allison shares. “Home chefs and pros alike can prepare it in a variety of ways: pan-fried, grilled, or baked with fresh herbs.” Her advice? Shoppers should seek out bright, shiny skin and clear eyes on the fish—those are easy ways to determine freshness and quality … and another example of expert guidance that’s invaluable when it comes to finding the best.

Swordfish “We recommend swordfish to those customers who tell us they usually don’t like fish,” Allison points out. “It’s denser than other fish, like pork, and mild in flavor.” Because of that density, swordfish can be prepared in ways that other fish cannot—like being grilled on skewers, next to fresh vegetables. “We sell a stellar swordfish marinade that we recommend for grill enthusiasts.” Buying fresh swordfish? Allison reminds shoppers to choose either white/ivory or pink/orange meat that’s at least 1-inch thick.

HOW ONE GRANDFATHER LIVES ON THROUGH HIS GRANDSON’S SERVICE TO OTHERS

Veteran Values It’s not unusual for grandfathers to share their wisdom. But World War II Army veteran Bernard “Papa B” Brockmeyer probably never suspected his young grandson would take his words to heart and, in turn, positively impact hundreds of thousands of people—including fellow veterans. Evan Osgood was only seven years old when his grandfather passed, but he remained inspired by Papa B’s words and service to his country. “He always said the most valuable thing I could do was rally people behind a cause. When you work together, you can overcome anything,” recalls Evan. As a freshman at Loveland High School in 2020, Even watched the pandemic unfold. “Our only defense against the virus at the time was wearing a protective mask—and there were serious shortages,” he says. When he heard reports of front-line caregivers and others getting sick or dying due to a scarcity of masks, he thought of his grandfather— and took action. Wanting to help prevent more tragedies, Evan found instructions on how to sew masks online. The first masks went to friends and family, who were so appreciative that they joined the effort, expanding Evan’s efforts into a small team. “The people we gave masks to wanted to help, so it kind of exploded from there. I built a website so people could request a mask, which I delivered.” Evan made an especially memorable delivery to a veteran couple who had been inside without masks for weeks, too afraid to go out. “I rang the bell, and

stepped back to my car. A woman answered the door, looked at the masks I left on her porch, and burst into tears. She was so appreciative.” Evan’s expanding team soon began donating to organizations like local food banks and shelters. They held virtual assembly parties where people could connect while making a difference. “It went from me and my friends to over 10,000 volunteers across the country!” Eventually, Evan founded a nonprofit (SOSforPPE) and started shipping assembly kits across the county. He focused on underserved communities, including VA Medical Centers—of the unbelievable 800,000 masks created by volunteers, Evan estimates around 40% went to veteran communities. His work with the local VA Medical Center not only provided masks to veterans, it also connected him with Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization that ensures veterans and their families can access available benefits and services. Evan, who was only following the advice of his grandfather, was honored with a $30,000 scholarship from DAV, which he intends to put to good use—he plans to major in computer science, followed by continued service to his community. Evan says Papa B was right. “It really is critical to work together. From me starting in my basement to all the people across the country donating hundreds of thousands of masks? That’s incredible.” Yes, Sir, it is.
