I browsed countless songs and artists to create my “ultimate ladies’ playlist.” I had the bosses—Beyoncé’s “Run the World,” dreamer Martina McBride’s “This One’s for the Girls” and rebel Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation”—all belting in my ears. I felt a connection with each song—and that’s the true magic that needs to be celebrated.

It’s not about narrowing it down, it’s about exposing it all. Just like my playlist, a piece of me identifies with each article in this issue.

I’m motivated to take action and make an impact in my community, just like the three phenomenal women in our “Champions of Change” article. I’m inspired by the passion the women of Grailville have for their organization and cause—and what they’re

Once these areas are identified, the system delivers a custom curriculum that allows Bob and his staff to attack those missing pieces by discovering what the student never learned to begin with. Once the student masters a skill, he or she can move up to the next level, and so on.

When Olivia started at Mathnasium, she tested in the “limited” category at the end of the 2017 school year. One year later, she had moved up to “proficient.”

“She views [math] as a challenge, and it has really helped with her overall confidence,” Christiana says. “I love how they help the children at their level ... they make it fun, they build self-confidence ... they teach them to make real-world connections.”

Lisa Williams started taking her son Ben to Mathnasium as a supplementary program because she saw how well the program worked for her other two boys.

“Bob was able to move him on so he could test in a way that

wasn’t so anxiety-driven. He doesn’t get stuck,” Lisa says. “As [my boys] developed one skill, it made learning all the other skills easier, so they weren’t spending as long in the program as they were before.”

No appointment is necessary, and one single, monthly fee gets you unlimited sessions. Parents receive monthly progress reports, and each student’s individual pages of completed curriculum are saved and available for inspection by parents.

“The Mathnasium Method allows for enrolled students to be continually assessed as they progress through their learning plans ... to measure and document increasing skill and knowledge levels,” Bob adds.

Enter the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals—17 tangible, responsible objectives the UN seeks to fulfill by 2030, covering gender equality, clean water, strategic partnerships and more. Among the Grail’s notable changes is their newly committed alignment to these major advances.

“Everything we do will somehow further one of those objectives,” Terrie affirms. “It gives us concrete goals to work on, and it gives us a way to tell people exactly what we are doing—we advance the 17 UN SDGs.” So follows their shift in focus. First, in fall 2018, came Learning Labs, a new initiative that bucked the model of scheduled, structured programs waiting (sometimes futilely) to be utilized. Labs present anyone in the community—schools, clubs, pop-up programs, nonprofits—a chance to use Grailville space to address a specific need. At no charge.

“The acreage here is an invaluable resource. So, what do you need?

The other switch from pre-fab programming is the creation of targeted modules, a new option being launched this spring.

“Rather than creating programs on a schedule, maintaining all this infrastructure so it’s ready on the off chance someone shows up, now we have a module to offer,” Terrie explains. “Want to learn about composting or permaculture? Great! We have that resource.”

The final new step is Art of the Oratory, a carefully curated showcase of the Grailville’s extensive art collection. The inaugural exhibit was a success, featuring select works inside the newly renovated Oratory.

Now, by publicizing that the collection exists and is available, they can focus on using it to educate … and inspire.

Above all, the Grailville remains vital. For women, it’s another choice (and chance) to fulfill something spiritually, internally, and make a difference in the world at large. It’s both a calling and a sisterhood. In other words, a home.

Kathy Bailey OCCUPATION: Loveland Mayor CAUSE: Loveland Legacy Foundation As an adviser to the Loveland Legacy Foundation, Mayor Kathy Bailey gets to witness firsthand the impact that community members can have on one another. It was, after all, their generosity that served as the impetus for the foundation.

After 2017’s devastating downtown fire, those affected received an outpouring of aid, including generous monetary donations. Once everyone was supported with the funds, the business owners agreed to use the remaining donations to “pay it forward”—starting the foundation to provide resources toward the betterment of Loveland.

The LLF’s mission is twofold, Kathy says. One objective is to support local charities such as L.I.F.E. and NEST, and the other is to have money available should another disaster strike the city of Loveland.

“We are always doing fundraisers and trying to make sure we have what we need, so that next time, there’s a safety net in place ... we’re already on our way [to having] what we need to help,” Kathy says.

The Loveland Art Fest and the Frogman Race will also be held that same weekend. In addition, bands will be playing downtown during 10 Fridays throughout the summer.

Kathy’s hope for the future of the foundation and Loveland is simple.

“Help your neighbor, that’s really what this is,” she says. “This [foundation] is a bigger way of doing it, but if we can all do it on an individual level ... what a better city we will have.”

“Every client who walks through our doors is valuable, and many of them don’t realize that.”

Linda Bergholz OCCUPATION: Executive Director CAUSE: L.I.F.E. Food Pantry How does the L.I.F.E. Food Pantry serve hundreds of Loveland residents every month out of a 250-square-foot space? Executive director Linda Bergholz likens it to playing Tetris, where everything has its place, and there’s a place for everything.

Despite tight operating quarters, L.I.F.E. has been making it work, helping families since the mid-90s.

Initially assisting 45 clients out of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, they now serve between 235-260 families or 400-600 people every month.

Because the pantry is so small, they are constantly restocking it, pulling from additional reserves in the Prince of Peace loft and from two rented storage units. Linda and her volunteer shoppers use monetary donations to find good deals all over the city.

“The more money we can save, the more things we can stock and the more people we can serve,” Linda says.

L.I.F.E. also receives funding and pantry items through food drives, grants, private donations, the Freestore Foodbank, grocery stores and other partner organizations. In addition to the pantry, L.I.F.E. helps residents in other ways such as a holiday basket program, student and giving shops, financial assistance and senior services.

Linda loves helping families in need, and she loves it even more when they tell her they no longer need the pantry.

“Nothing makes us happier than a family who comes in and says, ‘We’re not going to be back. We don’t need help anymore. We’re back on our feet.’”

L.I.F.E. is committed to protecting the privacy and dignity of the people they serve.

“Our clients deserve the same respect, dignity and consideration as a person who walks into Kroger to do their shopping,” Linda says.

Indeed, they do, and Linda is making it happen.

Heather Russell OCCUPATION: Hamilton County Judge CAUSE: CHANGE Court In addition to serving the Hamilton County Municipal Court, Loveland resident Judge Heather Russell also presides over the county’s CHANGE Court, a rehabilitation program for human trafficking victims with misdemeanor soliciting and related charges, and who also struggle with addiction.

In February 2014, Heather was asked by two Cincinnati police officers to create a program to help change the lives of prostitutes on West McMicken Street near the University of Cincinnati.

“It was an overlooked population. Nothing was being done for them, and because the jail was overcrowded, there was literally no room for nonviolent offenders. They were back on the street before the police finished the paperwork,” Heather says. “They needed someone to fix these girls.”

By March, Heather had arranged to meet with other law enforcement officers to draft a plan. By July, they had a roughed-out structure for CHANGE Court, a two-year program that involves four phases: orientation, compliance and stabilization, growth and development, and community reintegration.

Heather says there are about 12 women in the voluntary program at any given time. In the past five years, the Court has graduated six women from the program with three more on the same graduation track.

CHANGE Court offers the women medically assisted addiction treatment, clinic and psychology appointments, a lawyer to help with civil legal services, community activities and so much more.

If they successfully complete the program according to the guidelines, Heather can expunge the charges that brought them into the program, as well as any other charges.

While CHANGE Court is a long, difficult road to sobriety and recovery, it is completely life-changing to those who have completed it.

“One of the graduates said, ‘No one had ever offered me help or treatment before. I wanted to get out of this, and I didn’t know how,’” Heather adds proudly, knowing she’s helped change that.

Croque Monsieur Yields 1 sandwich INGREDIENTS For the béchamel sauce: + 1/4 cup butter + 1/4 cup flour + 1 1/2 cups whole milk + 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard + 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg or 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg + kosher salt For the sandwich: + 2 slices challah bread, toasted + 2 ounces ham, thinly sliced + 2 ounces Gruyere cheese, grated DIRECTIONS Begin by making the béchamel sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat until foamy. Add flour and cook, stirring, until the mixture is pale and foamy, about 3 minutes. Gradually add milk, stirring until the mixture is smooth. Cook, stirring, until the sauce is thick and somewhat elastic, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in mustard and nutmeg; season with salt.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a small crock or casserole dish, spread a little bit of the béchamel on the bottom.

Place a slice of toast into the casserole and lightly cover the toast with the sauce.

Spread slices of ham over the sauced toast, followed by half of the grated Gruyere. Top with the second slice of toast and cover with more of the béchamel sauce. Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese.

Bake until the cheese is brown and bubbly, about 10-12 minutes.

We had electricity and a fitting room and could go anywhere and do shows. We met Gina DeBell at our first show and ended up renting from her for our first brick-and-mortar,” Debby explains.

When it comes to selecting merchandise, Debby and Janel often defer to Ann Marie’s skills as a “fashionista.” Her keen eye for items that will interest a variety of shoppers makes the store a favorite with younger as well as older women.

“Sometimes we’ll purchase what the customers have asked for ... but we also try to have a little something for everyone.
