HELLO! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the premiere issue of Loveland Lifestyle. What’s not to love about this town? It lives up to its name. The city’s landscape is changing; new businesses are sprouting up everywhere. It’s a small town on the rise. Where people still stop to say hello and aren’t shy about lending a hand to a neighbor in need. This magazine is proud to be part of that renaissance. We look forward to sharing stories each month about the people and places that inspire us. We hope you will be inspired by them, too. At Loveland Lifestyle, we want our readers to get excited about a new restaurant or shop but also rediscover a Symmes or Loveland staple. Whether it’s a stickysweet holiday treat from Cocoa Bites or a comforting cup of seafood chowder from Seafood Station, this issue has both your sweet and savory covered. We also spread the editorial love to neighboring towns. Pickles & Bones BBQ in Milford might have started off in a tiny trailer, but they have never shied away from bold flavor. We take you inside one of Loveland’s iconic homes, and we sit down and chat with CeeCee Collins, president and CEO of the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance, about Loveland’s past, present and future. The Loveland Lifestyle team hopes you enjoy this issue and many more to follow. We are excited to join you every month with insider tips, local happenings and all things community. Cheers to finding your next new favorite place or just falling in

GOOD TIMES

“Loveland Strong” Street Fest Downtown Loveland was alive with music and anticipation as crowds gathered for the “Loveland Strong” Street Fest. The three-day event commemorated the rebuild of downtown after a fire devastated several historic buildings in 2017. A brass band led the way as Loveland Mayor Kathy Bailey congratulated downtown business owners. Festivities also included a reception for first responders and fireworks. When the Ohio Department of Education released its annual report card for public schools earlier this fall, Loveland High School was one of six local high schools to receive the very highest marks. While the high school received an A, the school district took home a B, one of five districts in Hamilton County to do so. BRUSH SCRIPT Gallery Veronique, the Harper’s Point mecca for art lovers that features everything from classic Frank Duveneck portraits to Estella Fransbergen’s clay torso sculptures, is now showing work by Frank Satogata. A Hawaiian transplant, Frank’s colorful abstract expressionist paintings are heavily influenced by his childhood home as well as his Japanese heritage. A former adjunct professor at University of Cincinnati's DAAP and the Art Institute of Cincinnati, he continues to teach painting to both adults and children. GalleryVeronique.com

STEAK OUT Fine dining veteran Tony Ricci isn’t one to rest on his laurels. The beloved steakhouse restaurateur just opened his third location in Indianapolis. His Lexington outpost opened in 2015, and he’s currently planning renovations to the bar and patio of his original 2010 location here in Loveland. When Tony and his team aren’t serving up the best steaks in town, they’re giving back to the community. 10

BISTRO SET Tano 2.0 has returned to the local dining scene. Gina and Gaetano Williams came back from the Loveland fire better, faster and stronger. In September, they reopened their downtown bistro and have plans to open a third location (Take Home Tano being their second) in Hamilton in early 2019. The Williamses purchased the building for Tano Bistro Loveland and have added a second-floor banquet facility as well as a thirdfloor rooftop terrace, both handicapped accessible via a brand-new elevator. WHEN DAYTON TRANSPLANT GLENDA JONES WHIPPED UP A FEW TREATS FOR TASTE OF LOVELAND BACK IN 2012, SHE DIDN’T ANTICIPATE THE BUZZ HER DECADENT DESSERTS WOULD GENERATE, LET ALONE THE LOVELY LITTLE BAKERY THAT WOULD BECOME A MAINSTAY IN THE LOVELAND CULINARY COMMUNITY. “I really did Cocoa Bites on a whim. I’ve always done creative work—from flower arrangements to design, mostly home design— and that led to baking and designing desserts,” Glenda says. “After Taste of Loveland, everyone kept urging me to open up a store. I waited for months and months, looking for the right location. Then our corner spot became available, but it was super scary. It had been used for storage, so I ended up gutting the entire place.” Glenda would go on to open the shop officially in July 2013 with just a few signature items. She slowly progressed to offering lunch and eventually became known for her stunning “naked” wedding cakes (naked cakes are a more minimalist style using slightly less frosting while relying on seasonal flowers and fruit for decoration). These days, visitors to her shop can expect to find three to four cakes available by the slice; up to a dozen flavors of cake truffles, cookies and cookie bars; pies; an array of exquisitely frosted cupcakes; and even a classic high tea service by reservation. “We’ve been doing lunch for about three years. We do a lot of paninis—peaches and basil with fresh mozzarella, green apples and grilled onions, pesto, chicken and avocado—I try to come up with sandwiches that people aren’t going to find everywhere,” Glenda says. Glenda, like many chefs, is inspired to cook seasonally. Her lunch menu incorporates produce items at their peak of freshness as do her cakes, cupcakes and pies. “I really like going to Jungle Jim’s, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods to just see what is beautiful and fresh. Once I do that, I know what to go with,” she says. With the holidays right around the corner, Glenda and her team are working overtime to stock the shelves with plenty of over-the-top offerings that will make entertaining a piece of cake. “I’m still narrowing down my Thanksgiving cake menu. We’ll have pumpkin cheesecake for sure and probably our carrot cake. But for pies, we will offer pumpkin, apple, caramel apple, and people will still order coconut cream because we are so known for that pie,” she says. 305 W. sense approach to the business as well.

“Barbecue is unique in that it brings everybody together,” Nicole explains. “It’s a cuisine without boundaries. We get customers who roll up in Porsches and people who walk from the neighborhood. Everyone sits together while they wait for their food." That kind of diverse clientele is also indicative of Milford, to an extent. The Houses are aware of the socioeconomic diversity as they live a few miles down the road with their three daughters.

“Along the way, we visited other neighborhoods to look for another location, but we decided that it made the most sense to keep reinvesting in this community, where we live and where our kids go to school. It’s important to do what we can right here.” Pickles & Bones walks the talk with a community give-back plan that allows them to work with local 501(c)(3) organizations such as their daughters’ elementary school and Newtown-based soup kitchen La Soupe. But the Houses also understand that change starts at home. All three daughters have a

hand in helping out at the family business. “We want to instill a sense of responsibility and work ethic in our girls,” Nicole says. “I’ll bring them over once or twice a week, an hour before we close, and they have work to do. They wipe off the sauce bottles or bring in a few pieces of wood for the smoker.” When I ask Nicole about plans for the future, she excitedly tells me about a Small Business Administration course she is taking and how she and Josh focus on “purposeful growth” for the tiny business they began with an “old trailer.” But she also remains grounded. “We want to grow, but we plan to stay casual. And authentic. That’s really important to us.” 1149 State Route 131, Milford, 513.317.2214, PicklesandBones.com

SOUPER BOWL SEAFOOD STATION IS MORE THAN JUST SALMON—STOP IN FOR ONE OF THEIR MANY FROM-SCRATCH SOUPS

24

Loveland Lifestyle | November 2018

ONION TUCKED INTO A STRIP MALL ON LOVELAND-MADEIRA ROAD, YOU CAN EASILY SPEED BY SEAFOOD STATION IF HEAVY CREAM

YOU AREN’T WATCHING FOR ITS BRIGHT BLUE AWNING. Venture inside for ahi tuna or swordfish steaks, but don’t miss the grab-and-go entrees (smoked salmon quiche!) and seasonal soups. We checked in with Chef Jeff, owner of Seafood Station since 1998, for the recipe to one of his most popular soups: seafood chowder. He suggests whipping up a big batch as it freezes well. If there’s any left, that is.

SEAFOOD CHOWDER Yield: 6 servings CHICKEN STOCK

INGREDIENTS + 1 tablespoon butter + 1/2 cup onion, diced + 2 cloves garlic, minced + 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced + 1 celery stalk, diced + 1/2 cup flour

RED POTATOES

+ 1 1/2 cups heavy cream + 2 1/2 cups chicken stock, plus more for thinning, if needed + 1 1/2 cups red potatoes, diced + 1/2 cup carrots, diced + 2 14-ounce cans creamed corn CARROTS

+ 1 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed + 1-2 pounds assorted seafood (bay scallops, small salad shrimp and firm white fish, cut into small pieces) + Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish + Salt and freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS Sauté the onions and garlic in butter over medium heat. Add the peppers and celery. Continue sweating for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Add the flour and cook for an additional minute. Gradually whisk in the heavy cream and chicken broth. Stir in the potatoes and carrots, and bring to a boil over mediSEAFOOD

um heat. Add creamed corn and corn kernels. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the seafood, a little more salt and pepper, and cook for 4-5 minutes until the seafood is just cooked. Check for seasoning. Add additional salt or pepper if necessary, as well as the fresh parsley. 10488 Loveland-Madeira Road, Loveland, 513.683.5993,

Loveland Lifestyle | November 2018

1. I am so grateful for my family. They are my everything! 2. Doesn’t matter if it's red or white, nothing beats a good glass of wine and interesting conversation. 3. Fall is my favorite time of year. Yes, I am one of those people who wants pumpkin-flavored everything. 4. I majored in theater in college, and I love to catch a show when I can. I appreciate that Loveland has its own community theater. 5. I’ve always loved to travel and want to do much more of it in the future. 6. If I'm going to indulge in dessert, it's going to be ice cream—and that ice cream has to be Graeter's. 7. A fun Saturday for me is sitting outside Paxton’s enjoying a beer, eating their fajita salad and watching the activity on the bike trail. 8. I love curling up with a good book. Jane Austen is a particular favorite.
