The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. My favorite holiday memories are of being with my family, grandparents, aunts and cousins. My grandmother was an amazing baker, and we would have a huge variety of cookies for dessert. I love that even though my grandmother is no longer with us, my aunts carry on this tradition and continue to make our family cookie recipes each year. I've shared one of our family favorite cookie recipes in this issue, and hope you love it as much as I do! This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Happy Holidays!

FIXING A STUFFY NOSE AND
SNORING QUESTION: My nose is always stuffy, worse on one side. And not only that...I am told by my spouse that I snore loud! What can I do? ANSWER: Your best bet is a full evaluation by an ENT specialist who can determine what is causing your nasal obstruction and the most effective treatment. Often, once the nasal breathing is restored, the loud snoring is then diminished or even eliminated. There are several steps necessary for a thorough exam:
Frank J Scaccia, MD FACS
HISTORY: Questioning the patient about previous trauma to the nose and also anything that may cause chronic swelling inside the nasal cavity like recurrent sinus infections, allergies and overuse of intranasal sprays such as Afrin.
RIVERSIDE
EXAM: Fiberoptic scope of the nose and throat to look for septal deviations, polyps, abnormal enlargements of other intranasal structures, and draining secretions which can be cultured. Check the external nasal structure for cartilage collapse that can result in a valve obstruction. Also allergy tests, home sleep studies and CT scans if indicated.
American Board of Otolaryngology (ENT) • American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery • Top NYC Metro Doctor 2006-2023 • In-office NJ state licensed accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center
TREATMENT: Customized to the patient’s cause of obstruction. Can be as simple as a regimen of intranasal and oral medications or more complex involving surgical procedures. ADVANCED SURGICAL TREATMENT: The latest techniques allow for quick recovery, no bruising, more precise repairs and open breathing immediately after surgery. Technology has improved with the use of 4K camera/monitors and microscopic visualization, laser guided infrared navigation and new methods and instrumentation for septum repair, turbinate reduction, valve collapse reconstruction and sinus blockage. Rhinoplasty techniques have also advanced and can often be performed at the same time if there are external nasal cosmetic concerns.

DRESSED TO THRILL
Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn, council member Eileen Chapman, BGCM CEO Douglas Eagles, and council member Angela Abhez-Anderson.
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB HONORS OLLIE JONES AT THE ANTI-GALA GALA
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM/ Club) recently commemorated their 85-year legacy of strengthening local youth and recognized key partners at a benefit event held on Friday, October 13, at the Wave Resort in Long Branch. Their "Dressed to Thrill" (Anti) Gala welcomed 175 attendees at the Wave Resort. The event successfully raised over $280,000, including a special appeal to support the organization's costs for 85 children in its afterschool program, amounting to $113,400. Corporate matching gifts are also expected to contribute further to these funds. During the event, the city of Long Branch received acknowledgment for their crucial role in the opening of the newest BGCM site at the Bucky James Community Center last year. In addition, Monmouth Medical Center was recognized for their significant contribution to the Long Branch Club, providing essential funding for both the establishment and ongoing operational expenses.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County also honored the city of Asbury Park, New Jersey where the organization originated, as well as Oliver "Ollie" Jones, the longest-serving member of its board of directors and a BGCM alumnus. "Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County is proud of our 85-year legacy of empowering young people to realize their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible adults," said Chief Executive Officer Douglas Eagles. "And we're grateful for our dedicated honorees that have championed our cause to build great futures for our youth." The funds raised from the annual benefit, "A Most Unusual Evening," will directly contribute to advancing the Boys & Girls Club's mission of nurturing promising futures for local youth and teens. The organization has been a steadfast support for over eight decades, beginning in 1938 when they first opened in Asbury Park and continuing to operate there to this day. BGCM has since expanded its programs to reach youth in Long Branch, Neptune and Red Bank. With a focus on providing a safe and caring space for children and teenagers during crucial out-of-school hours, the Club serves over 1,000 young people, primarily from low-income, single-parent households. BGCM offers nurturing youth development professionals and critical support systems that sharpen academics, build resilience, and develop life skills, enabling youth to grow and lead healthy lives. BGCM also extended appreciation to the city of Asbury Park for their unwavering support over the years, as well as the various partners based in Asbury Park who have played a vital role in enhancing the organization's impact on youth. Oliver "Ollie" Jones, who joined the Club in 1952, attributes his successful career at New Jersey Bell Telephone Company (NJ Bell) to the valuable lessons he learned at BGCM. After starting as a janitor, Jones became the first AfricanAmerican lineman hired from Monmouth or Ocean counties and later progressed to

management before retiring in 1994 as a division manager. Jones has served on the Club's board of directors for over 40 years and hopes that the current generation of youth benefits as much as he did. Sharon Mattingly and Denise Colford, the co-chairs of the committee, came together to organize and execute a one-of-a-kind event titled "A Most Unusual Evening," which is often referred to as the "anti-gala gala." The event featured unique entertainment, food and drinks, and silent and chance auctions. According to Mattingly, this event is the most important fundraiser for their organization and it was a grand success. The theme for this year's event was "Dressed to Thrill," which encouraged guests to dress in exhilarating attire and added to the overall excitement of the evening. For more information about the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County and their ongoing work, please visit their website at bgcmonmouth.org.

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

A family favorite and holiday tradition Snowball Cookies have always been a cherished tradition in my family, both during my childhood and as part of our holiday desserts. These delightful treats have a delicate and buttery texture, perfectly balanced with a touch of sweetness. Every time I prepare a batch, I'm instantly transported back to the magic of Christmas Day at my grandmother's house. It's amazing how certain foods can evoke such strong nostalgic feelings, isn't it?
