LIFESTYLE LETTER

Is 2024 the year? Research into New Year’s Resolutions found that only 9% of Americans complete them. Some 23% of resolution-makers quit after the first week and almost half end their quest by the end of January with the rest falling off gradually. And 12% of all new gym sign-ups happen in January and either they quit soon after or don’t really go very often. So why are resolutions still a thing? Marketing? Humans are permanently hopeful? We enjoy the guilt and shame of failure? It’s an interesting conundrum. Yet here we are…another year has passed and 2024 is upon us, and here at Leesburg Lifestyle, we are onto our annual Health and Wellness Issue. This is an important issue as our health and personal wellness affect all that we are and do. The truth about health is that many of us ignore the little things until they become big things, and we are forced to solve acute issues versus trying not to arrive there in the first place. To that end, we have gathered up some of our best local experts in the wellness field to talk about how we can improve our lives through mental and physical health over the long term. Set yourself up for sustained health and creating the habits that lead you there. If you feel good, you generally act better and when we act better, the world becomes a better place.

Before and After X-Rays

Would you believe a couple of tiny, bony structures at the tip of where our jaws connect to our skull are the source of a host of common ailments? They’re called condyles, and they sit atop our jawbone, protected by articular discs that function much like the kneecaps in our knees. When these discs degenerate or slip, “it hurts like a son of a gun,” says Dr. Jeffrey Brown, DDS, a TMJ and sleep specialist in Fairfax. Dislocation causes TMJ Disorder which stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disfunction. When someone suffers from TMJ Disorder, the articular discs and jaw joints aren’t in their proper position and can throw off many other vital systems. Not only facial and neck pain and tension, but snoring, migraines, ringing in the ears, crooked neck joints, posture issues, teeth grinding and bite issues, muscle spasms, movement disorders, vertigo and dizziness, sleep apnea, poor breathing, Tourette’s Syndrome, Parkinson’s and even death from severed arteries can result from dysfunction in these tiny discs. But how do these tiny discs get misaligned? It can result from poor orthodontia. But surprisingly, it can date all the way back to the day we were born. “When we’re born, we come through the birth canal of our mother. Mom's hips are never 100% straight. The skull gets twisted coming through the canal. And, if not treated, we’re forever like that,” Dr. Brown explains.

He’s even confident that as many as half of us suffer from some form of TMJ disorder. “Notice the anchors on the local news – how many of them hold their heads at funny angles?” It’s called “dystonia,” and it results from years of muscle tension adapting to TMJ issues. Dr. Brown has been pioneering diagnoses and treatments of the disorder for years, and has lectured all over the world on the subject. He began to learn about TMJ Disorder when he studied Dental Sleep Medicine and finally met Dr. Brendan C. Stack, Sr., an orthodontist who pioneered work on the condition in the 1960’s. Sadly, Dr. Stack died during COVID, but Dr. Brown says, “he taught me a tremendous amount of knowledge about what TMJ Disorder really means.” In his office, Dr. Brown demonstrated where these discs are and what happens when they misalign. “To identify what’s going on, we get a very specific MRI and a handful of X-rays to figure out what's going on as a good baseline. And that's really where it all begins: analysis of the discs, analysis of the bones.” One X-ray of a patient shows a before and after picture of how far left his neck was bent and his spine compressed before the condition was corrected. “Look at that left side. You can fully imagine the blood vessels within his skull being crimped and pinched and twisted, pinching off the blood flow. That means the heart has to work double overtime to pump more blood to the brain to keep

“Most orthodontists work along an X/Y axis, ignoring the vertical Z axis, where TMJ damage most often occurs. you alive, because of the blockages. It’s like the drains in the house are clogged!” When blood doesn’t drain properly from the brain, one effect can be the build-up of beta amyloid crud, which can lead to Alzheimer's. When the patient’s TMJ was corrected with a simple lightweight wire appliance that expanded his mandible and rubber spacers called turbos that corrected his bite, “Not only did his headaches vanish, but his cognitive abilities improved tremendously,” Dr. Brown said. In younger patients, when the jaw is correctly aligned, teeth can grow to create a leveled bite; in older patients, sometimes a crown or two can be more effective. Dr. Brown’s appliance, referred to as an ALF (advanced lightweight functional), is handy in correcting some orthodontic work that can actually cause TMJ issues. “Most orthodontists work along an X/Y axis, ignoring the vertical Z axis, where TMJ damage most often occurs. It’s a touchy subject for an $11 billion industry that I’ve been trying to educate for years,” he sighed. “What we need is more three-dimensional orthodontal thinking.” Sometimes discs are either absent or so degraded that only surgery will suffice, which Dr. Brown also performs. It was necessary recently in the case of a young woman whose pain was so severe she was suicidal. “We didn’t have time to putz around with orthodontics,” Dr. Brown said. “Afterwards, she was 1000 percent better and is now training to be a doctor.”

Of course, correctly identifying and healing a problem can take time. At the Sleep & TMJ Therapy center, right next to his office, is Ruth Bravo, a TMJ Massage Therapist who helps Dr. Brown’s patients retrain their head and neck muscles that have adapted to and tried to compensate for various misalignments. “Your muscles adopt memory, so what we try to do is retrain your muscles and your brain to go from being tight and compressed to releasing tension,” she explains. Ruth uses a “cold laser” and a Neubie direct-current electrical stimulation system along with facial and neck massage to first loosen tight muscles. Then she shares exercises and self-relaxation techniques that help to increase blood circulation and relieve pain. “It’s better than Advil and it lasts for days,” quips Dr. Brown. “My patients are always happy to see me, but Ruth they want to take home.” At home, Ruth recommends facial and neck massage with a small spikey ball, first thing upon waking, along with shoulder, arm and neck stretches. Dr. Brown’s website sleepandtmjtherapy.com is a font of information and videos to try to explain what he does in even greater detail, or you can just book an appointment at 703-821-1103. He’s passionate about education because “a lot of people don’t even know why they’re hurting,” he says. “They just haven’t heard of this. So that’s what we’re trying to do, spread the word that this is something that’s easy to fix and very effective and helps lots of people get better. This really works.”

building your home gym TRANSFORMING THE MAN CAVE INTO A WORKOUT WONDERLAND

ARTICLE BY MELINDA GIPSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY EVAN LYONS, DANIEL REED, MELINDA GIPSON

Forget about the “Man Cave.” Post COVID, it’s all about the home gym! And nobody knows more about the subject than Daniel Reed of NOVA Homeworks. “The reason so many people are converting their home theaters to gyms is that all the kids have their own iPads, so nobody was using them.” That, and it’s obviously healthier to work out together than to be couch potatoes. He adds, “With more people working from home, the trend is for homes to become more self-sufficient, so why not a home gym along with your home office?”

26

H OM E U P DAT E | FI TNES S

The same basement rec room can be a perfect workout space, Daniel says, but so can any 10’x10’ room, so long as there’s adequate lighting, the right flooring and engaging equipment that won’t turn into clothing racks by next season. “We like to work with places where we can either enhance or create natural lighting – plenty of windows – and maybe add mirrors or workout bars on the walls. It should be a welcoming area that is nicely designed so you want to spend your time there.” One of the main objections to bringing the gym into home living spaces has been the perception that the flooring has to be made of rubber, Daniel adds; “There are so many other options now, you don’t have to sacrifice style for durability. We specifically installed a sturdy vinyl floor for one client to match the wood flooring on his upper level.” If a brighter, more playful space is what you’re after, then hard, rubber flooring is still available – in a wide range of hues – blues, reds, yellows; you can even match the colors of your alma mater, complete with embedded logos. Daniel has had years of experience with high-performance, made-to-order flooring, even helping recently to transform a warehouse into a full basketball court for a former proNBA player who is launching a training facility for kids. He was set to install one just like it in Ashburn in December (See evobball.com/advanced-trainingashburn.) Even turf, or a full-sized putting green are some creative ideas that he’s facilitated. “You can really have fun putting these things together,” he said.

Gym floors can look like wood or be as colorful as your happy place needs to be!

Because NOVA Homeworks is a Class-A contractor, Daniel could build you a gym in a free-standing structure, or remodel any portion of your house to optimize your personal fitness. That comes in handy when you need help installing electrical wiring or video cables to wall-mount wide-screen TVs. Such installations can be used to follow workout videos or just relax watching a game while working out. With earbuds, multiple family members can be engaged in multiple different workouts at once. Beyond that, every home gym needs “good air movement,” and solutions could range all the way up to installing a dedicated HVAC system. The very first home gym Daniel built was back in Berrien Springs, Michigan for none other than Mohammed Ali. More recently, he built one for former National’s pitching ace Max Scherzer. He just finished work on a gym at the Hyatt Marriott in Alexandria, and has worked for groups ranging from the YMCA to

California State University, Fresno and many government training facilities in secure areas. One of his fans is Zachary Travis, Onelife Fitness facilities director, who has worked with him to build out several local Onlife gyms. He told us, “Daniel's an excellent contractor to work with. He's been my go-to guy on a lot of projects. They do outstanding work.” For clients’ equipment needs, he works closely with Evan Lyons of Woodbridge, Virginia-based Ardent Fitness (https://ardentfitness.com). Because Evan is also a personal fitness trainer, Daniel has learned that some of his most satisfied clients work with their own personal trainers to help customize their gyms to meet their needs. Evan says, “Everybody works out differently. And hardly anyone has the space to replicate a whole commercial gym in their home. So, what

I usually ask people is, if you could take three to five things home from the gym to make sure you have them, what would they be? You have a whole generation of people that are aging. All they want to do is build some strength to hold their grandkids or maybe just get around better. Everybody's goals are different. Hardly any of our clients want to be Arnold [Schwarzenegger]. They just want to live better.” Daniel adds, “Most people don't like working out. It's not that fun. It's something you have to do. So, we both try to make it as easy as possible in as beautiful a place as anywhere else in your home.” Give Daniel a call at (703) 962-7500 for a free quote and a conversation about what you'd include in your own home workout wonderland or schedule an appointment today at novahomeworks.com.

Look & Feel Better at Any Age JUST ASK LOOP WELLNESS CLINIC’S PATIENTS ARTICLE BY MELINDA GIPSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY LANAGHAN, MJLSTUDIOS

Bryce Buell In his first year of law school, Bryce Buell was randomly stopped by a modeling agent while walking on the street and was strongly encouraged to model because he “had that look.” Deciding to take a year off to pursue what he thought was a sideline, short term job, in actuality, ended up being a very successful modeling career. So successful, that he never went back to law school. That was 30 years ago. He has since settled down, parenting two adult girls and a three-year-old son. Bryce says he discovered Loop shortly after his son was born because “I felt like I’d lost a step and was looking to see what solutions there might be. I looked into hormone therapy, talked it over with my wife and decided to try it.” He says that, after treatment, “how it manifested in me was that across the board in just every part of my life I was like 10%-15% better. I had a little more energy, a little more motivation. I could better recall things. I just felt mentally sharper.” Now three years into his hormone therapy at Loop Wellness, he is motivated to have more consistency with his exercise and he has begun modeling again. (Check out @brycebuell on Instagram if you’re intrigued!) He says, “If you’re willing to put in the work at any age, there’s no reason you can’t feel and look great.”

Penny Barry

“My oldest son got married and had some grandkids and I’m now

For Penny Barry, bioidentical hormones and weight loss treatment at Loop Wellness “has been a life changer...Before I came to Monica, I was developing osteoporosis. I had high blood sugar. I was like pre-diabetic. My triglycerides were high. My cholesterol was high.” Penny was pleased to share, “I just had a physical about a month ago and all my numbers are normal and they haven't been normal in a long time. So, I really mean it, I feel like she's saved my life.” Penny struggled with declining energy as well an auto-immune disorder. A friend recommended Monica, so Penny decided, “I’d tried everything else. I’ll try this too.” She was immediately impressed by how much time Monica took to understand all of her symptoms. “She asked so many questions and did very detailed blood work, and she listened. She really wanted to help and figure out what was wrong with me and make it better.” Once starting hormone therapy, she states “That has taken away a lot of my autoimmune symptoms... a lot of the inflammation, aches and pains. My osteoporosis has improved…It’s also made me feel better overall. I was exhausted all the time. I still get tired but nothing like I used to, and I used to just have constant joint pain.” Penny, a school teacher and petite brunette, started gaining weight during COVID, when all her classes became virtual. She added weight loss therapy to her treatment, and has lost 50 pounds. “That’s a lot for someone who’s 4 ft. 11-1/2 in. tall,” she said. Recently, she found some older pictures of herself and remarked, “Wow. I look like that person again…My oldest son got married and had some grandkids and I’m now happy I can get down on the floor and play with them!”

Cynthia Cabanillas Eight months ago and 40 pounds heavier, Cynthia Cabanillas couldn’t wear her favorite Michael Kors boots. Before she discovered Loop Wellness and started bioidentical hormones and weight loss therapy, “I was exhausted mentally, physically, probably emotionally.” During the pandemic, as the lockdown had begun, Cynthia also had the advent of menopausal symptoms. Loop Wellness owner Monica Unni told her, “You don’t have to feel like this. We can help!” Cynthia explained. “Within two weeks of starting therapy I no longer felt as if I had hit a wall in the afternoon and had to lay back down. I was relieved…and within three months, I felt human again!” The thing that struck her most in hindsight is how many women like herself just take tiredness as a natural consequence of aging. “It doesn’t have to be that way.” Though she felt much better, inactivity and grief from losing her sister to COVID caused her to put on weight. That too turned out to be something Loop could address. After a panel of blood tests, she started weight loss therapy that included weekly monitoring of her vitals, weight, and nutrition. She lost 40 pounds in 8 months, improving how she feels, but most importantly, her health. “I have degenerative disc disease and was suffering from nerve pain every day. My (back doctor) told me in December that I was going to have to have surgery to fuse my vertebrae.” She balked, fearing how this would impact her active life with her 13-year-old son. However, after losing all her weight, “I have no nerve pain at all and I don’t need surgery.” With that kind of outcome, wearing your favorite clothes again is just a bonus!

“You don’t have to feel like this. We can help! Within two weeks of starting therapy I no longer felt as if I had hit a wall in the afternoon and had to lay back down.”

Mario Palafox Mario Palafox is an avid cycler, typically doing between 3,000 and 4,000 miles per year. But when he began training for the Armed Forces Cycling Classic, he felt like he’d lost a step. “I started having issues with my muscle recovery,” Mario said. “I was doing all the right things, stretching more, hydrating.” So the first time he came to Loop Wellness he was just looking for an IV with electrolytes to reclaim his pep. When Monica asked him if he’d ever had his testosterone tested, he said, “No, I never really thought about it.” They set up an appointment to do the blood work and he said his tests showed that his levels were “clinically low.” He commented, “You know, guys are pretty proud, and when I learned my testosterone was low, I took a step back…Then a female friend from yoga said she’d started hormone therapy at Loop Wellness, and said it changed her life. So by the time I came back here, I’d decided I’m doing that!” He decided on bioidentical pellet treatment because “The idea of coming just once or twice a year for treatment really appealed to me.” Since he’d been in training for a race, “I put it to the test almost immediately,” he said. Mario bested his own time considerably, reaching a personal best speed of 23 miles an hour during the 63-mile race, finishing among the best in his age group. (He was then 46.) Today at 48, he feels even more fit by adding EmSculpt Neo treatments to help strengthen his core. “Strengthening my core not only helped me with the cycling but it took away my back pain.” Finally, Mario enthused, he had so much energy, he decided to get a puppy, so he was encouraged to walk even more.

Cindy Willingham positively glows. She’s in love and in a relationship with a wonderful man she met while walking her dog. She came prepared with pages of notes for our interview, overflowing with enthusiasm and good humor. She thought long and hard about how she wanted to describe what she calls her “journey with Monica,” and finally arrived at the description that “I have transformed into an older version of my younger self.” She explains, “It's a profound change in my life that she has made; I get teary just talking about it because I've been with her for four years.... No doubt we are all getting older but to have this feeling at my age is incredible. It’s a gift.” When she first came to Monica, she had trouble sleeping, had started getting hot flashes and sweating, often while working on her dental patients. Her gynecologist had put her on estrogen, but then retired. Not knowing where to go and what to do, her trusted aesthetic specialist, Sarah Safa, PA-C of Refined Aesthetics referred her to Monica at Loop. Cindy recalls her conversation, “go see Monica! She can help you with hormones…I did and it’s been an amazing experience. She’s passionate and knowledgeable. She cares about me and took the time to explain what was going on and what I needed. I’ve never experienced anything like this.” Balancing her hormones came first. She said, the process “is physical; it’s mental; both your body and your mind’s energy level are improved. I’m more energetic than my 35-year-old daughter and my 40-year-old daughter-in-law.” Of course, they both have kids and, she remarks sagely, “You can’t out-run a six-year-old, but I can spend the day with them and I’m keeping up!”

Monica Unni, MS, PA-C and Erika Schilling, NP Monica Unni earned a Masters of Science in Medicine and Physician’s Assistant Studies from Shenandoah University and has more than 20 years of clinical experience. She spent 17 years in emergency medicine within INOVA Loudoun Hospitals Level 3 trauma center. She’s used that background to branch out into integrative medicine, focusing on hormone health, wellness, and weight loss by opening Loop Wellness Clinic almost 4 years ago. She is a certified Biote Medical practitioner and has earned “Legacy” status within Biote, distinguishing her as the most experienced provider in the Northern Virginia area for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). In addition to BHRT, Monica offers IV nutritional therapy, as well as various weight loss options with direct coaching and one-on-one guidance. Loop has state-ofthe-art body sculpting equipment that helps enhance up to 30% muscle and reduce up to 25% fat. The hidden gem of Loop wellness clinic is the Emsella chair, which helps treat urinary frequency/urgency, incontinence, and improves intimate health.

Monica's expanded space will be ready in January

Monica works with Erika Schilling, a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner in midwifery and 26-year Navy Veteran with a doctorate in Nursing Practice. She is even an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, with not only a focus on women’s health, but wellness overall. Monica and Erika offer a unique experience for all patients that come to Loop. With an hour consultation, all patients will leave feeling heard and will have their concerns appropriately addressed. The primary focus for all patients is overall improvement in quality of life. Monica explains, “Women and men 35 and older can benefit from having their hormones evaluated. Our focus is helping patients with symptoms that vary from lack of energy, brain fog, forgetfulness, disrupted sleep, changes in lean muscle, joint pains, and for women: hot flashes, and night sweats. These are all things that hormonally we can look at and see if we can help you.” Loop Wellness is expanding their offices onto the thirdfloor of their current building. The suite will be shared with Sarah Safa, PA-C of Refined Aesthetics. Together Loop Wellness and Refined Aesthetics have formed the Virginia Anti-Aging Institute. “Our vision is that patients can serve all of their needs aesthetically as well as hormonally – helping them feel better on the inside and look better on the outside.” Call 571-528-3505 or use the website loopclinic.com to book a consultation. Don’t Slouch, Eat Your Veggies and Get Enough Sleep!

“We’ll look at the four pillars of health – first, structurally how well are you doing, and that includes exercise. Then, where are you with sleep? Where are you with stress? Then, finally nutrition.

Dr. Misty Paul of Basics Chiropractic is a healer. Besides being an expert on the mechanics of the human body and how to alleviate pain, her study of nutrition and essential oils and their own properties to heal are spurring a “Reclaim Your Health” initiative at Basics First. “We’ll look at the four pillars of health – first, structurally how well are you doing, and that includes exercise. Then, where are you with sleep? Where are you with stress? Then, finally nutrition. We’ll start out with an assessment to determine where you need the most work and will start there, continuing until you feel healthy and balanced.” Because Dr. Misty speaks regularly at events like the local Women’s CEO Summit, we can offer this short synopsis of some quick tips to get you started in the New Year.

1. SELF-CARE ISN’T SELFISH.

For women in particular, it is important to recognize that we can’t take care of our families unless we’re taking care of ourselves. It’s the first thing they say in an airplane emergency drill – put on your own mask before assisting others! Most say they fall behind because they don’t have time. Unfortunately, those days are gone when we can pause work to go work out for two hours. But there are simple basic things we can all do to improve.

Listen to your mom – don’t slouch! It’s not just a matter of putting your ears over your shoulders. We’ve become a sit-down society: sitting most of the day at work and during long commutes, then couch-sitting through the evening. Constant compression of our spines are straining our lower back, giving us lazy butt syndrome plus back and neck pain. The simple remedy is stand up! Stand up even for five minutes every 30 minutes. Walk around. Place hand weights and resistance bands by your desk for use during long conference calls. Before you know it, by the end of the day, you’ve logged 30 minutes of exercise!

2. EAT YOUR VEGGIES.

We don’t have very much time for lunch. But instead of grabbing a burger, do just a little bit of prep work to provide bags of prepared greens and vegetables. One bag of vegetable slaw from the grocery usually comes with dressing, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds. Just bring a bowl, a fork and a couple of bags to work so you can either add it to your luncheon intake or substitute it for a sugary snack. Or, make a shake of greens and fiber (I use dōTERRA’s) with your favorite juice as a supplement. Either way you’re doing something good for your gut.

3. ADDRESS YOUR STRESS.

We’re all overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks we need to address in a given day, in and outside of work. Many of us are in that sandwich generation where we’re caring for our parents and our kids, leaving little time for ourselves. When we’re responding to things in stress mode, we’re exercising our sympathetic nervous system – that fight or flight response that kept our cave-man ancestors alive when facing an outside threat. Adrenaline supplied, we fight or we run. Our blood pressure spikes, we can start panting. It could be traffic or being late for a call – whatever the impetus, we’re tapping and thus depleting our reserves of energy unnecessarily. Our parasympathetic nervous system is the opposite – it provides us with rest and relaxation. It helps us digest our food, experience our surroundings or have a pleasant conversation. To help balance these two systems, the first step is to just try to get more sleep. Short of 7 hours of sleep, we become sympathetically driven by caffeine. We’re wired and just cruising until the next crash. With just a little more sleep we’re more creative and better able to focus. Sleep should be managed like

everything else; having a bedtime ritual helps prepare us for sleep just as we did as children. The Vagus Nerve is a big controller of our parasympathetic nervous system. It runs from the top of our diaphragm, past our hearts and into our throats. That’s why a couple of deep breaths help to activate it. So does humming, and aroma therapy. Misty’s favorite way to de-stress is to just rub a few drops of Wild Orange essential oil between her hands, cup them to her face and take a deep breath. “Instantly, it feels like I’m alone in an orchard; the scent passes the blood-brain barrier and helps to stimulate all the good hormones in my brain.” Try it during your next stressful moment and see if you don’t take your blood pressure down a notch. Working to activate your Vagus Nerve can even decrease inflammation elsewhere in your body. So, those are just a few of Dr. Misty’s tips. None takes hours out of your day, but together they could help to make you healthier and more mindful in 2024. Need more of Misty’s help? She’s cut her first consultation visit from $100 to $49 just for readers of Leesburg Lifestyle. Give her a call at 703-7772532 or book online at basicsfirstchiropractic.com.

career “I never felt like I worked a day in my life!” She adds, “It was hard. It was challenging. There were politics. I had to navigate long hours. But when you love what you do, then you’re excited to get up every day regardless of what’s going on, because you’re going to find those things in any job.” The key to happiness in your work life, according to Deborah, may be as simple as following your dreams in a manner that allows you to live out your most deeply held values. It’s probably predictable given what she does, but she says, “Most people I meet hate their job. They wish they would have done something else, and they feel like it’s too late for them. They don’t know what to go into. They don’t know how to get there.” So, she begins with clients by trying to discern what their dreams are. “Most people who are CONTINUED >

unhappy at work are following someone else’s dream. “They’re typically doing what a parent or teacher or someone else told them to do and never took the time to figure out what they want to do with their lives.” Is it any wonder that Deborah is among the most popular speakers at area high schools? What she tells them is that, “When you figure out what you really want to do and you go in for the interview, you’re going to get the job. When it’s coming from your heart, they can feel the difference,” she said of prospective employers. She also advises jobseekers to understand the culture of the places where they’d like to work. Weighing that culture against their own values is key to finding a good fit. She uses a variety of strength tests to help job seekers do a self-assessment. “If you’re in a career that’s not applying your strengths, it’s like you’re paddling upstream without a paddle. Conversely, you’re going to get the bonuses and raises if you love what you do.” Beyond strengths, values matter. This should be obvious, but it turns out that people often have competing values they must prioritize to find a job that satisfies them. Deborah offers clients a list of nearly 80 common values and asks them to pick just 3-5. What’s more important to you, really? Compassion or control? Patience or risk? Creativity and innovation or faith and religion? Are you more interested in gaining knowledge, wisdom and growth from your work or money and wealth? Is structure more important or are you a change agent? Do you prefer independence or teamwork? Are you a perfectionist or does your health matter more? How highly do you rate recognition and achievement – or are you more about service and ministry? Where does purpose fit? It becomes not so much a choice as a discussion, weighed in the crucible of everyday mindfulness. On some level, you have to believe that everyone deserves to do what they love and can discover it with just a little help and effort. Says Deborah, “Sometimes it’s as simple as asking yourself, ‘What makes you laugh? What makes you cry? When was the last time

you did something you were really excited about? What you do should elicit some kind of an emotion. Otherwise, you’re just on the hamster wheel going in for a paycheck, you know?” As a manager she always had programs geared towards employee satisfaction, encouraging other bosses to be approachable and willing to mentor others who sought to do what they do. “Above all, I tell people never to be afraid of failure because it’s the only way you’re going to get anywhere. When you fail, you usually fail forward.” She also believes people need accountability partners and champions She helps clients prepare goal sheets, but then also checks in regularly because, “Otherwise people say, this is my goal for the year and, all of a sudden, it’s November and they haven’t really started on it!” One of her favorite definitions of success is from Earl Nightengale, who said, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” People who know what their goal is to make every step toward it part of a journey in progressive realization, she explained. “Successful people do one thing every day that brings them closer to their goal. It’s all about understanding what those small steps are that make the difference,” she said. Want to start your journey in the right direction in the New Year? Start with Deborah’s “Discover Your Dreams Questionnaire” on p. x. Answer the questions with responses that represent who you are as well as your belief system. The answers should initiate an emotional response. Then, pick up the phone if you’d like to talk, or need her to inspire your team. Besides having had a successful career with the federal government, she has a Coaching Certification with the Maxwell Certified Leadership Team, is a Certified Personal and Executive Coach with The Coaching and Positive Psychology Institute, a Member of the International Coaching Federation, and a teacher at George Mason University.
