StyleDefining
Our traditional view of style generally revolves around clothing, jewelry, or the design of our environment. That is a pretty narrow definition focused on out ward appearance. We'd like to think of style as an eclectic conglomeration of its many definitions (all simplified here): "a manner of doing things," "a way of behaving," "elegance and sophistication," or "a distinctive appearance."

Brushing teeth can be made fun!
Another way to make homecare more enjoyable is to treat it like a game. Set a timer for how long kids need to brush their teeth, two minutes. Turn it into a race to remove the most sugar bugs or play a favorite song or video that they can brush along to.
• Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
Getting involved in the kitchen with the kids is also a great way to mix in learning about proper diet. A fun recipe that lets everyone get involved is a homemade strawberry popsicle. You’ll only need five super simple ingredients, and the kids will love getting to help out in the kitchen. The recipe goes as follows and makes six delicious popsicles:
Whichever way you choose to spend time with your loved ones this school year, just know that good oral hygiene can be a fun part of it. Try out some of these ideas mentioned and never hesitate to discuss new ones with your dentist.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that parents bring their child in to visit the dentist within six months of their first tooth show ing up in the mouth; or by the age of one. Parents fre quently wait until their child has grown older and the teeth have begun to fill in.
Dr.ShohrehSharif,D.D.S.,FAAPD,FICD
• Create a paste of flour and water with a drop of food coloring (the bad stuff)
• Fresh lemon - 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed
Although this is understandable, children will often times show early signs of tooth decay, that go unde tected, and other oral health issues which could have been avoided through early detection and screening. Early examination is key to prevent problems and to help instill good habits into children. Protecting your child’s teeth will keep them free of pain and ensure that they have a smile which they want to show off and be proud of.
This is a great way to show, teach, and mimic brushing. Having the kids watch the slurry mixture be removed from the teeth solidifies proper oral hygiene technique.
Dr. Shohreh Sharif has been practicing dentistry for 25 years. She is: Associate Professor, Howard University College of Dentistry Diplomate, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Diplomate, American Orthodontic Society IAD Top Pediatric Dentist among Leading Physicians of the World Fellow, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
• Plain whole milk Greek yogurt – 12 ounces Combine all the ingredients in a bowl, blender, or food processor. Grind for about 10 seconds until every thing is combined. Divide the mixture into reusable popsicle molds. Place in the freezer overnight for the. These are perfect to cool off after a day outside.
• Fresh/Frozen strawberries - 2 cups
Also, kids’ toothpaste comes in variety of flavors that can make brushing much more pleasant. Ensure that it is a product with fluoride to have the best results.
• Lather this on the “tooth”
Arts and crafts are a great way to spend quality time with your child while simultaneously unplugging. This project is a great way to teach your kids about oral health while having them reduce screen time as well. Here’s how it goes:
• Natural Sweetener (agave or honey) – ¼ cup
Practicing brushing and developing a fun routine helps create an enjoyable environment when it comes to oral care. Have your child involved in picking out which toothbrush they like most. Soft bristles help make sure we don’t hurt the gums.
• Cut the bottom off of a water/soda/Gatorade bottle
• Paint it white (this mimics the tooth)

The Art of Capturing
Personal Style in Just One Photo
CONTINUED > 23| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/LEESBURGSEPTEMBER 2022
Personal style shows up in every aspect of our lives. It transcends trends. It is the aesthetic that defines who we are at our core. Expressing that style through home décor, clothing, travel and even social media is easier once you know what your personal style is. But when it’s time for a new corporate headshot or the family holiday photo – times when other decision makers have a say –many people find it difficult to communicate their own personal aesthetic on camera.
Q: WHAT MAKES A STRONG, EMOTIONAL PHOTOGRAPH?
A: There is so much to say about what makes a strong photo. But truthfully, art and style are subjective. If you ask 10 photographers how they would shoot the same situation, you’ll get 10 answers. There’s no right or wrong. It’s very personal.
That said, there are things that technically make a good photograph; things like compelling composi tion, storytelling, contrasting concepts, brilliant use of light, and unique perspectives. These elements are all important. Yet, I’ve seen photographs that don’t meet any of those technical criteria, but still move me.
The key to a great shot isn’t in the poses or the back drop, or even the purpose of the picture. We asked professional photographer Astri Wee for her advice on how we can all stay true to our personal style in every photo we take.
Q: WHAT IS THE KEY TO CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF SOMEONE’S STYLE?
A: What you want to tell the world about yourself informs your personal style and the aesthetic that captures it. That is all based in emotion. Taking a great photo means tapping into that emotion that charac terizes who you are. Doing that takes collaboration with your photographer, whether it’s a professional, a friend, or someone else. You need to ask yourself what you want every photo to say. The answer may come in a split second before you snap a picture with your phone for Instagram, or over the course of a conversation with a professional photographer. Regardless of the situ ation, tapping into emotion is a mindful and effective approach to photography.
It doesn’t have to be that way, says local lifestyle pho tographer Astri Wee. She has helped hundreds of people capture their unique style with a single photo. Whether it is baby’s first photo or a professional head shot, there are ways to snatch a moment conveying “that special something” that is 100% unique.
Q: HOW DO YOU TEASE OUT THAT EMOTION?
An image should stir something inside you. A strong image brings the viewer to an emotional place and emo tional response. That to me is what personal style is all about—creating an emotional response based on how you present yourself in the world.
It really comes down to an emotional connection between the photographer and the subject.
A staged headshot or a family photo where everyone is looking at the camera each have their place. But, for me, a strong photo that capture emotion comes from the moments in between those moments. So-called candid photos are more genuine because they capture a sponta neous moment that nobody is preparing for—they’re real.
A: One trick I use with my clients is to snap the shutter on the count of two instead of three, which catches a person preparing for the shot. That is often their true self. I also talk to my clients. I tell jokes or have conversations. That way, when I start snapping the shutter, we’re having a con versation and they’re reacting to something I say. It’s a gen uine emotion I’m catching and that comes across.

Astri Wee specializes in luxury, lifestyle photogra phy. Her style combines fine art and journalism, always striving to capture her subjects in a relaxed and natural environment. Based in Brambleton, she works throughout Northern Virginia. See more of her work and contact her at astriwee.com

Making the subject comfortable is key. For exam ple, one recent client hadn’t had her picture taken since having her mastectomy. She was getting a new corporate head shot and was self-conscience about her body. We talked and joked, and, after she told me the reason for her stiffness, she relaxed and had fun. The result was a corporate headshot where her per sonality shined and her style came through.
Q: IS THERE A BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR A PHOTOSHOOT?
A: Wear comfortable clothing in colors that you know look good on you. Act like you do when you’re around trusted friends and family. That is how your essence will shine through.

HOMESTRETCH ADDRESS
One of his specialties is in moving high-end antiques and heirlooms, particularly large pieces that need special care. “We take pride in having one of the lowest claims ratios of any moving company around. My insurance company didn’t believe me in year one so they did an audit and lowered my premiums.”
ONE FAMILY
Moving people takes time, and forges rela tionships – probably because the process is so stressful. Because Gregg has moved many fami lies who were downsizing into smaller homes, he often received offers of furniture from clients who have misjudged what their new space would hold. As a matter of service to his clients, he always accepted, but didn’t really have a use for it until after his local networking group chose Homestretch, a non-profit dedicated to address ing the root causes of homelessness for families with children, as its annual charity beneficiary.
Real excitement grows in Gregg’s voice as he begins to tick off Homestretch’s success metrics – how, like his own, it’s a small organization that relies on personalized attention to what caused a family to become homeless in the first place.
“At the time, I said, this is a perfect charity for me! I can donate all this furniture and help fam ilies with children make a home for themselves.”
In the two and a half years that he’s been involved with Homestretch, he says he’s probably helped to furnish two or three dozen apartments.
Mothers who have fled domestic abuse with their children are the most frequent beneficiaries of Homestretch’s services, which include helping her finish her education, engage in job training, get out of debt and rebuild her credit, and land a good-paying job that can support her family’s future housing needs. Homestretch’s process typically takes two years, but at the end of that period, 90 percent of clients remain safely housed and employed and many go on to own their own homes.

“They may only help 60 families a year, but most of those families are children, so the average age of the person they help is just 9 years old.”
Attention to detail; trained, career movers, transparency, and superior process are all part of the package. As a smaller operation, he has had the opportunity to innovate and now offers “crate and freight services,” shipping household goods nationally and internationally. In large wooden containers he packs and ships every thing from a whole house in just a few pieces, and, unlike the major van lines’ tractor trailers which may carry multiple family cargo with mul tiple deliveries, he can precisely peg a delivery time. Gregg packs and ships these crates to his agent for delivery anywhere in the world. “The van line system will always be there, but I think this crate and freight system is actually going to be the future of moving,” he says.
CONTINUED >
Obviously, we wanted to find out what makes Homestretch so effective in overcoming the myriad causes of homelessness in Northern Virginia. What we found is that executive director Chris Fay shares Gregg’s values for personal attention.
Ninety percent of Homestretch’s clients are sin gle mothers with children, 65 percent of them flee ing domestic violence or human trafficking. “So there’s considerable trauma in these families that has to be dealt with in this individualized plan,” Chris says. Regardless of income, each family is expected to pay 30 percent of their income toward housing costs and 10 percent towards savings, to help them learn budgeting.
Though it doesn’t enjoy the name recognition of Habitat for Humanity, Homestretch has been serv ing Northern Virginia homeless clients for 32 years. Based in Falls Church, it owns its own building with its own licensed preschool, Kidstretch, and nursery on the first floor; credit, job and education counsel ing services on the second floor; room for a medical clinic on the third and administrative offices on the fourth. Over the years, it has acquired 36 apartments and homes which, with another dozen rentals, it uses to house and help train 52 homeless families a year to build financially stable and productive lives.
Two client stories particularly touched Gregg: one of a single father who lost a son to a medical condition that exhausted the family finances and ultimately caused him to lose his job as well, rendering his sec ond son and himself homeless. With Homestretch’s help, he’s now a manager at Wegman’s and his son is starting college at George Mason University. Another female client and her children suffered domestic abuse. “Homestretch helped her get away and go back to school and now she has her master’s degree and is teaching at a local community college. These stories are just so amazing!” Gregg enthused.
Individual donors, businesses and the Northern Virginia faith community all donate to support the program, which takes roughly $40,000 per year per family to run the program. An individual church may support a single family or to sponsor one of the Homestretch homes through its “Sacred Homes” pro gram, or just contribute as they can for all the services it provides. And, as for the nurse, she went on to serve in INOVA’s cancer ward and all of her children went from failing in school to excelling – a couple of them are already in college. “This kind of intervention takes more time to explore resources like transportation, childcare, scholarships and tutoring assistance, but it has a profound and lasting impact,” Chris said.
“We had one just open up a culinary business that was featured on the Food Channel and another one who has won awards for being one of the top Realtors in Northern Virginia. Another was listed in Washingtonian Magazine last December as one of the top 50 nurses in the metropolitan area.” So, yes, the intensive engagement Homestretch pro vides has a significant and lasting impact.
“What happens is that we take a homeless fam ily with children, put them in a home, and then treat them with services designed to identify all the problems that led to their condition. When we address those problems, the family can ascend out of poverty and crisis,” Chris explains. “Families tend to stay with us for a longer period because our services tend to be more comprehensive, inten sive and individualized.” Whatever the cause of their homelessness, Homestretch has a program designed to help their issues in a wholistic way – to set goals and support them as they work to achieve them... We tend to work with fewer families than a lot of other programs, but with the intent that this family will never return to homelessness.”

And, for all but a very few, that’s what hap pens. In the last decade, Chris says graduates of Homestretch have become nurses, teachers, accountants, chefs, and licensed social workers.
Homestretch doesn’t take government funding because “the current government model does not support the way we do things which is this depth of services and working with families over a long period of time,” Chris explains; “So, we actually must raise all our money for the private sector.” For example, one client with several children came to the pro gram from an abusive home situation. She said she wanted to become a nurse. The team determined that it would take three years for her to complete her nurse’s training, after which time she could support her large family. Government assistance wouldn’t have funded her for such a long period of time, which served as Chris’ “aha moment” regarding the chari ty’s need to seek private donations.

To realize her goal, her first move was to partner with an insurance carrier that was attuned to the equestrian lifestyle. She decided to represent Farm Family Casualty Insurance, part of the American National Company group, because this company offers Insurance Policies that are well suited to protect Farm and Equestrian Operations. She then joined the board of the Loudoun County Equestrian Alliance, which represents the interests of the equestrian community in the county, as the organization’s membership coordinator and listened avidly to the many operational, civil and social issues faced by horse owners.
ANNA CONNORS WORKS TO PRESERVE THE EQUESTRIAN WAY OF LIFE
The norm for most Virginia horse farmers is to believe themselves covered by their “homeowners” policies that cover damage to the house, the barn or the other out-buildings. But these policies are ill-suited to insure the thriving businesses that equestrian operations are, or the potential liability issues they represent. “I soon realized that there was a need to help these incredibly dedicated people pre serve their way of life,” Anna said, and decided to dedicate her company, Connors Coverage Group, to do just that.
Love, or maybe passion, are the only two words that can adequately describe the motivation that drives equestrians in Loudoun County. Our horse farms and train ing facilities and the families that own them, work long hours, often 24-7/365, to sustain their way of life. It’s this lifestyle of love that Anna Connors has dedicated her profession to protect.
Anna’s 8-year-old daughter rides horses; this summer she started jumping. As a trained insurance agent, when her daughter’s devotion to horses first began to flower, Anna found herself increasingly pressed to answer questions about her job. “Once people knew that I was an insurance agent, they began asking me whether they had the proper coverage” for their riding stables, their training facilities, and their employees. “In truth, as we visited the many beautiful horse farms and began meeting the families that own them, I was shocked to learn that very few of them had insurance that covered either their horses or their equestrian activities!”

“Many barn owners think that just by displaying a waiver of liability or the Virginia liability laws that will cover them 100 percent,” she explains. Nothing could be further from the truth. “One of the key reasons you want to have insurance is because you want to be able to pay your defense costs in case you are sued. Your horse may misbehave, get out on the road, or kick someone, causing medical expenses and associated pain and suffering. The injured party may claim negligence on the part of the horse owner or trainer, which claim you have to defend yourself against. You need to make sure your defense costs are covered because regardless of your care or pro fessionalism, accidents happen.” Merely mounting the cost of a legal defense could bankrupt smaller horse farms, she warns.
Each and every policy she writes is different, based on her clients’ activities, because Anna has made herself familiar with any and all potential risks the owners face and spends time getting to know how each farm operates. She is so sensitized to these risks that she provides her clients with loss prevention tips – tips like, “Make sure that the temperament of each horse is graded before you put anyone on the horse.

Anna approaches assessing potential risks, any one of which could cripple a horse owner’s ability to bring joy to her daughter and others, like a detective. “I love seeing the passion that equestrians have; I love it. They are the most passionate people I’ve ever known, to be honest with you. They live and breathe this life – that’s not something you find in every busi ness, you know? What motivates me is making sure that they don’t lose what inspires them because just one serious loss could cause them to lose everything they own. I’m here to protect this life. One day my daughter will be one of them.”
Anna says she is always available to review horse owners’ or trainers’ current insurance coverage and give them an honest assessment of what it does and doesn’t cover. “I will be their best advocate and give them a totally honest analysis of their policy. Once I tell them where the loopholes are, they are free to go back to their agent and ask them to correct this, this and this. I will never make someone switch unless it is something that is in their best interest.”
riding lessons, training, playing polo, transporting, showing, or even boarding horses at home on the farm. “I now specialize in guiding my customers on the Insurance Policy endorsements (clauses in an insur ance policy detailing an exemption from or change in typical coverage) that they need to protect them from any liability or property damage,” she said. General insurance policies may exclude risks involving eques trian activities unless they are explicitly added back to policies as covered, she explained.

Make sure you check your saddles. Make sure people are wearing the safety gear properly. Make sure your barn is nice and clean and that you have safety signs displayed both there and in your arena. Do you have farm machinery? Make sure the use of that machinery is covered on your policy.” The most fundamental questions, she says, are, “Is my personal liability cov ered? Is my business liability covered? Is my horse lia bility covered? If the answer to any of those questions is ‘no,’ then we should talk!”
“I soon realized that there was a need to help these incredibly dedicated people preserve their way of life.”

If the art of personal beauty has a “style,” Elle Aesthetic Arts and Plastic Surgery ( plastic surgerynorthernvirginia.com) has mastered it. Walking into the Ashburn suite of Dr. Larry Lickstein and Zineb “Z” Moussafir evokes the same awe and appreciation as strolling into a Gucci or Versace boutique. And, just as the high-class surroundings blur the lines between cosmetic procedures and haute cou ture, so the practice is blurring the boundar ies between modern plastic surgery and cos metic medicine; between laser therapy and advanced skin care.

Elle’s ambiance is bolstered by the confi dence engendered by the credentials of its proprietors. Dr. Larry Lickstein is a Harvard and Princeton educated Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with more than 20 years of experience performing aesthetic procedures. His practice incorporates surgical rejuvena tion of the face and body, lasers and other non-surgical therapies, and injectables such as neuromodulators and fillers. Zineb “Z” Moussafir, the Director of Medical Aesthetics, has more than 17 years of experience in both the medical and aesthetic fields, is a highly sought-after consultant in the industry and has a large, loyal patient following. She has been asked to review devices by aesthetic
Fans of each other’s work, they came together during the pandemic to try to re-imagine the personal aesthetic and plas tic surgery experience in a way that brought all the best offerings of each discipline into a boutique experience for each patient. As they describe their craft, they offer “compre hensive services for face and body, employ ing surgical and non-surgical treatments, devices, and therapies, to deliver a height ened sense of health, beauty, confidence, and well-being. develop the highest quality results we possibly can. And we wanted to provide a boutique experience for our patients where we aren’t emphasizing the delivery of services but the development of relationships. By developing those relation ships, we can effectively make significant changes in the way people feel about themselves and that influences the quality of their lives,” Dr. Lickstein explains. “We developed this center as a great opportunity for us and for the community to explore those options.”

Both partners share strong beliefs when it comes to patient treatment being both relationship oriented and results driven. Says Z, “I think we both aim to deliver the most excellent treatment, regardless of whether it is surgical or non-surgical. Whether a patient comes in once a month for a facial for anti-aging, or comes to a decision about needing more, I have the confidence of the best possible referral in house, and that’s rare.”
Dr. Larry Lickstein
He adds, “It’s an exciting time to practice because we have so much more that we can offer people and everything else also got bet ter. The quality of anesthetic delivery is better than it ever has been because anesthesiologists are used to taking care of older and sicker peo ple. Pharmacology is better. Everything that we can offer people is better now than it was even during the course of my 20 year career.”
The key to expertly applying any technique is to help each patient look their best. Even given the dramatic technological advancements in surgical and non-surgical treatments, every person seeking a solution at Elle – from their 20’s to their 80’s – likely wants a natural aesthetic. “We help you look like yourself, only younger, refreshed and refined. Nowadays, people want to look natural,” Dr. Lickstein said. “The trend is for people to feel great about themselves. If we do plastic surgery, it’s artfully and thoughtfully done and delivered in the context of a relation ship with integrity and with care. That’s what we want to do here.”
“IT’S A PLEASURE TO DO WHAT WE DO. IT’S FUN TO HAVE THAT KIND OF IMPACT ON P EOPLE AND IT’S QUITE A PRIVILEGE THAT PEOP LE LET US DO THESE THINGS FOR THEM. WE BOTH PLAY A ROLE IN HELPING PEOPLE BE THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES THEY CAN BE.”
After citing a range of cases where patients addressed sagging skin following weight loss, to life-changing reconstructive surgeries, he repeated, “It’s an exciting time.”
“At the end of the day, we get a great deal of satisfaction out of what we do, and we get a great deal of love from our patients. It’s a plea sure to do what we do. It’s fun to have that kind of impact on people and it’s quite a privilege that people let us do these things for them. Dr. Lickstein agrees, adding, “In terms of the things that I do surgically, almost everything I do can be made better by combining the ther apies that are done on our Med Spa side. If I’m doing a facelift, everybody benefits from improved skincare, lasering and light thera pies to improve their skin quality. If I’m doing a tummy tuck, we love sending people over to get an Emsculpt Neo treatment to build up their muscles underneath first. There are lots of patients that, given their goals, are appro priate for surgery and a lot of surgical patients who can improve their outcomes by combining medical, surgical and non-surgical therapies.”

EXPERT HELP | HEALTH + WELLNESS Dr. Kajal Roy 46
Stress, in particular, can lead to drops in levels of Testosterone, which is key to protecting all the body’s organs – in women AND men. Gary Donovitz, MD, in his book, “Testosterone Matters...More! The Secret to Healthy Aging in Women,” writes, “Women make more Testosterone daily than they do Estrogen; in fact, in your twenties and thirties, you make fifty times more Testosterone than Estrogen.” And, he adds, “As you progress through the seasons of your life, Testosterone is your source of youth and vitality.”
prescribe hormone cream, Dr. Roy says, “The problem with creams is you don't know how much is actually getting absorbed. The thickness of your skin may be different from the thickness of my skin, so we would obviously absorb different amounts at a different rate.” Likewise oral medications have to first pass through your liver and into your bloodstream. “Here again, you can't really control the rate at which it's the dosing that you're getting. That's why I prefer pellets,” she says.
Our stress levels over the past 18 months have been among the highest in recent memory. If you’re a woman in her mid- to late 30’s or older, such stress added to simple aging can lead to hormone imbalances causing symptoms like insomnia, fatigue, brain fog, inability to build muscle or lose weight, lowered sex drive and just plain not feeling yourself. Dr. Kajal Roy of Niyan Medspa (niyanmedspa.com) says many such symptoms may be effectively treated just by optimizing the bal ance of the hormones in your system.
Dr. Kajal has herself experienced the treatment, sparked in 2021 by a need to better concentrate to study for her board exams. “I just intuitively knew that something was off; I just didn't feel right. So, I actually got my hormone levels checked and found out that my Testosterone level was [extremely low]. And that's when I started pellet therapy.”
Note that step one involves getting your hormone levels tested because precision dosing is key to address ing each patient’s individual symptoms. Testosterone and/or Estrogen 2 must be administered in the proper proportion to address each person’s deficit in these hormones to effectively restore balance. For patients considering hormone therapy, Dr. Roy provides a free consultation, then prescribes a quick and comprehen sive blood test. The results of the blood test, covered by most health plans, deliver results that are then pro cessed with BioTE’s proprietary dosing platform. This process makes sure that only the hormones you need are inserted into your customized pellets.

inserted underneath the skin, release more hormones when your heart rate is elevated, when you’re working out, and when you’re stressed, and fewer hormones when you’re sleeping or relaxing – simulating exactly how your body would naturally respond in its need for theseThoughhormones.somedoctors
Dr. Roy, an internist, says hormone levels natu rally decline up to 10 percent annually as we age. It’s this imbalance which makes us feel out-of-sorts. Thankfully, medical science has come a long way towards being able to precisely measure not only our existing hormonal levels, but the right dosage of replacement hormone therapy needed to bring every thing back in alignment.
Your diet also can help increase your Testosterone levels, particularly good fatty foods like avocados, nuts and healthy oils, but by the time you’re experiencing the symptoms above, the impact of diet alone is mar ginal, Dr. Roy says. “What I recommend is bioidentical hormone replacement with pellets.” The hormones are made naturally from plants, and are identical in compo sition to the hormones in our own bodies. The pellets,

Dr. Kajal Roy on Aging Well
In Dr. Roy’s own experience, having under gone bioidentical hormone replacement therapy when working seven days on then seven days off at the hospital in her earlier practice, the treat ment enabled her to sleep like a baby off-shift and to wake up refreshed. She had much more energy to complete her rounds and, she says with a smile, “My marriage has gotten a lot better.... I can work out, see real results and I’m actually not hungry,” she added.
She explains, “My vision of what it means to be an internist has evolved and changed. There came a point in time where I thought, this isn't right, what we're doing, overmedicating people. Take diabetes for instance – it's a completely preventable dis ease. If people aren't willing to make the necessary changes in their lives, that's where medications come in. But, if you truly want to live a life where you don't have to have medication as a part of it, it is possible. I love my profession, but I feel like some times we get stuck in this rut of just prescribing because that's what we've always done.”
She adds, “I think we're at a point where we throw a pill at everything, and I just don't think that that's the right way to do medicine. I think we need to address the underlying issues. My goal is to try and get people off of their medications including dia betes medications, blood pressure medications, all of those things. If you can make a healthy body by optimizing your hormones, and decrease your blood pressure, start losing the fat and building the muscle you need to function – then you can begin to live a better life without medication, and without their side effects.”
Dr. Roy now considers hormones essential build ing blocks to health because they have so many beneficial properties for all the body’s systems. “I definitely think that your chronological age doesn't have to dictate how you feel. I have I've seen people in their 90’s who are so much more active than peo ple in their 50’s. We can do better. Absolutely, 100%, we can do better.”
at its best.... All of those things, including anxiety, can be attributed to a lack of hormones. I have even been able to get some patients off of their anxiety and antidepressant medications!”
The only way to determine whether you’d bene fit from similar therapy is to consult Dr. Roy, have your blood work analyzed. “Then we sit down and come up with a plan, including an insertion if that’sWomenindicated.”receive new insertions every 3-4 months, men every five to six months – and, YES, it works for men too. Success is defined by the return of a feel ing of well-being that’s hard to describe for both men and women, but is very appreciable. For meno pausal women, additional benefits like cessation of night sweats and hot flashes are a bonus, along with a kind of sustained energy that is nothing like the feeling of being hopped up on caffeine.
“We've never really taken two giant steps back wards and looked at the big picture. We've become too accustomed to treating a symptom and not really going after the root cause of that symptom. I feel that, if we take more of a preventative approach, we can we can stop writing so many prescriptions that cause a multitude of side effects, which are then treated with more prescriptions. I'm an inter nist within a different vision for my patients.”
Since Dr. Roy has begun administering hor mone therapy in this manner, she’s observed how integral hormone balance is to health and well ness. Examining their levels, “forces you to really take inventory of what your body is doing and how you're feeling. What's your body telling you? Instead of compensating for the things that bother you like tension, stress, anxiety and insomnia, you’re getting the things your body needs to be

One specific test Dr. Roy routinely prescribes in advance of pellet therapy is a test for the two DNA markers for breast cancer: BRCA1 and BRCA2. The absence of such markers – showing that a patient is not pre-disposed genetically to develop breast cancer – allows physicians more flexibility in add ing both Estrogen 2 and Testosterone to a patient’s regimen, in addition to Progesterone, thyroid medication, pro-biotics, vitamin B and D and other nutrients. (Sometimes, just finding out that you may be clear of these DNA markers is worth all the hormone therapy in the world!)
Because women business owners often experience high stress levels, Dr. Roy will be speaking on the subject of hormones and health at the Women’s CEO Summit ( bit.ly/2ndWomensCEOSummit) October 7 at the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott.

If you visit Athens, the Acropolis with the Parthenon is a must-see, but be prepared for the climb and marble pave ment, which can be a bit slippery. It is worth the effort to experience not just the Parthenon but the amphitheater and other structures that have stood the test of time.

A visit to the Monevasia Olive Farm came with an education on the fruit, how it is grown and harvested and of course a serving of olives, olive oil, fresh tomatoes and homemade sourdough bread. Nafplio, boasts a city that was host to the Mycenae civilization which flour ished around 1600 BC. Sites there included the Lion’s Gate and the Treasury of Atreus , also called the Tomb of Agamemnon, which is a beehive tomb built about 1350.

In Ephesus, Wind Star guests were treated to a luxurious, white linen, multi course meal served after hours while being entertained by the Turkey National Symphony playing on the ancient library platform. Wind Star is the only cruise line with exclusive evening access, and many found it the highlight of the trip.
Probably the best way to explore the Greek Isles is on a cruise and we chose the Wind Star, a small ship with about 100 guests. This allowed us to get into smaller ports and truly relax as we sailed. Our ports included Mykonos, Santorini, Patmos, Monevasia and Nafplio. Patmos is a small island with over sized importance. It is here that St. John of Patmos wrote the Book of Revelation. We vis ited the Cave of the Apocalypse and learned about the man and his work.

After retiring further south, we decided to sell our River Creek home after leaving it on the rental market for over ten years. Selling an older home in a high-end neighborhood, with a tenant in place, with $150k of needed updates, long-distance and during COVID-19 pandemic—this could have been the ultimate real-estate horror story. Instead, it was one of the easiest, smoothest house sales I’ve ever experienced. Pam handled everything and quickly sold the house for more than the asking price. Pam is the most professional and capable agent that I’ve ever worked with.
