The Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Advisors” ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person and telephone due diligence meetings to evaluate each advisor qualitatively, a major component of a ranking algorithm that includes: client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of SHOOK Research, LLC and not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Let the Road Trip Begin! NOSTALGIA! That acute feeling of sentimentality for a piece of our past is often a leftover of the family vacation. Whether you remember being one of two or more kids in the back of a Ford Fairlane on the road-trip to Yellowstone, or were yourself the driver on that iconic family car trip, we should warn you: things are different now. Largely, it’s good news. We’ll first award the “badge of honor” to parents who conducted road trips to national parks before cell phones (“It’s MY turn for the Game

You can search for your closest national park, plan the big trip, find out how to make reservations (advisable long BEFORE you go), and download maps, lists of places and other content for use in areas without cell service. If you can’t take advantage of this month’s tantalizing excerpt on great NPS destinations, it’s at least fun to check out the News in this great tool for information on special events and hikes to put on your bucket list. Speaking of “bucket lists”: “50 States, 5,000 Ideas” and “Drives of a Lifetime” (the new edition is out in June) from National Geographic, are two of our favorite inspirations. Another spur to exploration arises from a prevailing pandemic hobby: Ancestry.com. Here, we’ll first note how many historically rich destinations exist both in and just a stone’s throw from Loudoun County, starting with Oatlands. But, as you’ll note from

Daniel Found His Brother Living in a Slum Where he was Born
“I’VE HAD A GOOD LIFE,” SAYS DANIEL REED, OWNER OF NOVA HOMEWORKS IN STERLING. “I’ve been blessed.” This feeling of gratitude for a successful flooring business (https://novahomeworks.com/ of Sterling) and a beautiful family might seem like the norm for a Loudoun business owner. But with Daniel it’s different. While your average family of four might save up for an annual beach holiday, every vacation

My mom used to say if you hadn’t gone so much you’d be a very wealthy man! But of course this was all before I got married,” he smiled. Not that that changed much. After he and Lezlie married in 2001, Daniel began building his flooring business, a trade that had been putting him through nursing school until his great chemistry with customers caused his employers to pull him into the business full time. Along came son Joshua, now 13, and Kyleigh, 10. Now, wherever they travel – often to Lezlie’s native Mexico – the kids take clothing, toys and crafts for kids they meet on their journey. One such trip took them to San Telmo where the families live near the town dump.
Some people share photos from their trips to the beach. Daniel enthusiastically flips through his family's recent service projects.
“When we vacation in Mexico, we always do some sort of community work while we’re there,” says Daniel. On their last trip they bought rice,

beans, oil and other staples and took the supplies to communities where handicapped families live. The connection came through relatives of Daniel’s fellow church members in Haymarket who work with handicapped parents south of the border. “We made around 25 baskets of food and toys and so forth and took them around to the families in these little shacks where they were living.” They also collected money for an 80-year-old woman living in a “little plastic house” to build her a better place to live. The kids enjoy the work. Daniel says, but it’s an education too. “I want them to learn. I came from a very poor situation and, while my kids have been very well blessed, I want them to understand the humble people and how they live. That’s all I’m trying to help them understand.” Saying Daniel came from poverty is no exaggeration. He was born in Guatemala to a single mother of

our business, but we’re also here to be a blessing to people. We send kids to camp, and we support a school in Texas so they can buy supplies.... Faith has a lot to do with it, but it’s also that my heart just feels for these people where the need is great. I don’t want to forget where I came from.” To Daniel, his efforts have always seemed small – nothing world-changing – “it’s just a little bit of help with this and a little bit of help with that,” but that too could be about to change. Daniel’s work in Guatemala reconnected him with the orphanage through which he and his brothers were adopted. It’s called International Children’s Care and is “dedicated to the care, education, and spiritual growth of orphaned and vulnerable children in underdeveloped countries.” The internationally recognized non-governmental organization based in Seattle has orphanages in several countries, and a website dubbed, http:// forhiskids.org. The group champions traditional Christian values like the potential of each person to reflect the image of God; the dignity of every person; and the importance of quality in human life. It helps orphaned, abandoned and needy children, typically by setting up as many as 12 children in a family-style home with two parents. Inspired by Daniel’s story – not just by becoming successful at business, but by the lifestyle he and his family have adopted – ICC is working on a documentary that will feature his experience. Because that involves his being trained in woodworking at home and using this to forge a career, the group is looking for ways to help members of its homes learn a trade so they can become self-supporting. Daniel says, “I would be happy to go to developing countries and train folks because, it’s like you say, you can give a fish and feed someone for a day or teach them to fish and they can live for a lifetime. That’s my dream and I would love to get business people from Loudoun involved.” ICC is on board for whatever comes together, “so we can show other people – yes, it can be done!” William's new home awaits a roof when there's enough money to finish it.
Daniel adds. COVID has delayed the Reed’s vacation for this year, likely until December when they hope to help build a school in Peru.

“I knew then this was going to be part of something special,” Ryan said. When he and his mom returned to their car, they both just sat there for a while, too full of emotion to speak, until Deborah said, “They’re watching us. When we say their names, there’s something that enlivens them. It builds them up. They see us; they know us and they’re glad we’re here.” RYAN WILLIAMS, A FORMER NBC NEWS EXECUTIVE, IS NOW

Like most African Americans, Ryan’s historical quest for his family roots would otherwise have been lacking beyond the 1870 census, the first U.S. Census to both count and name African Americans who had been enslaved. In that census, Ryan found Robert Day, the last of his ancestors associated with Oatlands. Robert had walked away from the farm a free man as soon as he’d earned enough money to buy his own property in Gleedsville, named for another enslaved family.
Having grown up in Philadelphia where every fourth grader has toured Independence Hall and stories of the underground railroad, he’d spent little time on the history of the other end of that conduit.
“They’re watching us. When we say their names, there’s something that enlivens them. It builds them up. They see us; they know us and they’re glad we’re here.”

With that name, and using records painstakingly compiled by Oatlands historians he also found Robert’s parents Emanuel and Virginia Day and grandparents Julius and Jane Day. It was a history to which Robert’s Ryan’s own grandfather had only cagily alluded, saying there might be “something interesting” in his great-grandmother’s ancestry. “It’s safe to say that was a bit of an understatement,” Robert Ryan says. “I went from Googling a plantation, to a phone call to Oatlands, to an invitation to visit, to ‘hey, there’s also a reunion scheduled for May’ in one day. It was all very overwhelming.” Of course, he accepted the invitation, five years ago in May, driving in from Arlington with his mother Deborah, who lives in Pennsylvania. The then curator of education Lori Kimball, who digitized Elizabeth’s diary, laid out large sheets of paper with names neither of them had ever heard before, and no one in the family knew anything about, laying out in detail the history of George Carter and his wife who had built Oatlands mansion and at one time owned as many as 133 slaves. A tour of the property led them to handle bricks both made and laid on the estate by the enslaved, and to touch divots in the floorboards outside the “master’s bedroom” where the enslaved slept.

Robert had 12 children, each of them deeded around 3,000 acres, largely in Virginia. A portion of Betty’s land became what is now part of the Manassas Battlefield. Once she realized that Betty’s brother had built Oatlands, her path also led her to a board seat in 2015. Katharine distills her personal journey into three truths: “I’m very proud that I’m the great- times five, granddaughter of Robert Carter III who freed his slaves. I’m very, very proud of that. I’m horrified – as anybody would be whose ancestors owned slaves – that my great- four times uncle George was a slave owner. That’s horrifying, really, really horrifying. But third, I’m heartened and so encouraged and proud of what Oatlands is doing because our work is part of a reconciliation that I think our country and all of its citizens need to take part in.”

To boil it down, Caleb believes that the history of Oatlands, like the history of Loudoun County, reveals families that were split apart over the Civil War and slavery, mirroring similar contradictions in U.S. law and practice. “You have presidents who touted both freedom and slavery, and those two ideas are incompatible – they can’t co-exist.” These contradictions are brought into stark relief at Oatlands, whose story swings from a father who freed nearly

500 slaves to a son who purchased more than 100 in just one generation. The very fact that Robert Carter III was a contemporary of George Washington and every Virginia signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution puts this hard truth – “the smelly cat” question on the table: if he could free 500 slaves, why couldn’t all our founding fathers? It may be difficult to have honest conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion in corporate conference rooms, Caleb adds, but you can have them at

A PAINLESS WAY TO KEEP CAVITIES AWAY
ARTICLE DR. SHOHREH SHARIF D.D.S., FAAPD, FICD
REGULARLY BRUSHING AND FLOSSING YOUR TEETH ARE THE BEST WAYS TO PREVENT CAVITIES. However, it can be tough to reach every nook and cranny. This is especially true with our back teeth, called molars, which are particularly special because of their strength and the pivotal role they play in chewing. But did you know that these molars have areas with grooves that allow for bacteria to hide more easily? Because of their shape some of our teeth (molars and premolars) are more susceptible to cavities. The good news about all of this is that there is something called a sealant that helps protect our teeth. This thin protective coating made of a special dental material goes over the chewing surfaces of our molars and can keep cavities from forming. In certain instances, they can also stop early decay from becoming a full-blown cavity. Studies have shown that sealants can reduce the risk of decay nearly 75-80% in molars. We get our first set of molars at around So, this is a very important consideration in keeping your children in good oral health as they grow. A study from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released in 2016 stated that only 43% of school aged children 6-11 years old had sealants. According to the CDC, “school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants.” Sealants are appropriate for children and adults. The process is quick and painless. Sealants can often last for years and are examined at your regular checkup by your dentist. Some dental plans cover the treatment, and contacting your insurance

LOCAL LIMELIGHT INMED'S EXPANDS TO PAXTON CAMPUS TO OFFER HANDS-ON LEARNING
ARTICLE MELINDA GIPSON
A N E W N E X US O F O P P O R TU N IT Y THIS JULY, THE AURORA SCHOOL, PART OF THE ARC OF LOUDOUN, WILL CELEBRATE ITS 18TH ANNIVERSARY – IT’S 12TH ON THE GROUNDS OF PAXTON’S LEESBURG CAMPUS. The school’s impetus were the needs, felt by the parents of three children with autism, that were not being met by either the Loudoun County school system or private institutions at the time. One of those parents was Jennifer Lassiter Smith, Aurora School’s first executive director. Jennifer now heads INMED USA, whose mission is building pathways for economically vulnerable children and families to become self-reliant.
