LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Publisher Dear Reader, I hope this letter finds you inspired and ready to embrace the beauty of self-expression. Style is such an extraordinary part of life—it’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read, and even how we interact with the world around us. It’s the unique thread that creates the tapestry of who we are. What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks, and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding. Here in Lee’s Summit, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our city’s vibrant culture, there’s so much to ignite your creativity and lift your spirit. This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that. So go ahead, celebrate your unique style. Whether you’re exploring new trends, blending classic elements, or creating something entirely original, let this issue inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression. Here’s to being unapologetically and uniquely you!

over time, delivering a one-of-a-kind experience for every collector. They also offer a lifetime guarantee!” As we move into fall, this season’s handbag trends are making an entrance. “Quality leather and beautiful metal finishes are always on trend. We are looking forward to brownish leathers like Cherrywood and metal accents and accessories, like gold link straps for Fall,” Jen says. If you’re looking for something that stands out but still feels timeless, Hammitt delivers. “Hammitt is known for their black pebbled leather and brushed gold rivets. Additionally, they offer limited edition seasonal patterns and leathers like the Meadow Weave for Fall.” The collection at A Thyme for Everything is tailored to meet the needs and tastes of the Lee’s Summit crowd. “Hammitt offers a handbag line as diverse as the shopper in Lee’s Summit, from wristlets and crossbody bags for running errands, to traditional shoulder bags for day-to-day life, and statement evening bags for a fun night out downtown.”

ARTICLE BY LAUREN POWERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

A Thyme for Everything may be best known around Lee’s Summit for its curated kitchen goods and unique gifts, but tucked among the cookware and candles is a surprising touch of high fashion. This local gem is the exclusive area retailer of Hammitt handbags—luxury leather bags designed for quality, style, and statement-making confidence. “We love to partner with other femaleowned businesses as well as businesses offering small batch items (those that are local and/or have a philanthropic message are at the top of the list),” says Jennifer Pine. Hammitt fits that mission perfectly. It’s not just any collection; they only carry Hammitt. That exclusivity is intentional. Hammitt’s commitment to craftsmanship and limited production makes their pieces stand out. “Hammitt ensures the exclusivity of its products through limited production and distribution, crafting handbags in small, curated batches to maintain rarity and uniqueness. With quality over quantity as a driving force, Hammitt pieces develop unique character

What are customers obsessed with? “It’s the pebbled leather! A Hammitt bag isn’t just an accessory; it’s a symbol. A symbol that you don’t follow trends: You set them. So, next time you’re on the town, keep an eye out for those iconic rivets. Because one thing’s for sure: when you’re carrying a Hammitt, the world notices. And who wouldn’t want to be noticed?” Jen notes that there’s a style for every person and occasion. “There is a Hammitt for every style and occasion; you just have to find what fits your personality.” Looking for a top pick? “The Kyle Medium or the Tim Medium,” she recommends. And if you're only going to get one? “The Kyle Medium - it’s just the right size, not too small and not too large. It has a shoulder strap as well as a crossbody strap, so you can carry it multiple ways and for just about any occasion.” And yes, even regulars are often surprised to see handbags sharing shelf space with spatulas. “A lot of customers are surprised that, as the ‘kitchen store’, we carry Hammitt. We love the brand and have carried their bags for several years. Existing and new to Hammitt shoppers love to be able to see, touch/feel, and purchase their Hammitts from a local independent retailer.” When asked to pick a favorite, it’s hard to choose. “Wow, that’s a tough one! Marilyn loves her brand new Kyle Medium in Black with Brushed Gold. I’m personally waiting on the new Invitation Clutch that should be here before the holidays.” Even better, customers get the boutique experience. “Of course! Anyone who comes into our store looking for Hammitt knows it’s a passion of ours. We are happy to have customers try on the bags in the store with their items to find just the right fit and style. On occasion, we can special order items specific to a customer's needs.” And the season is just getting started. “We do have several new silhouettes, leathers, and accessories coming just in time for the holidays. Everything from great everyday shapes to super fun party bags for the season.”

Clothes Mentor is an upscale women’s resale shop specializing in apparel, shoes, and handbags. We carry a variety of womens designer brands in new and like-new condition - each piece is hand selected and reviewed for quality and style before it goes to our floor. Our products are sourced from women in the community and our mission is to keep fashion cyclical, sustainable, and responsible. We save tens of thousands of items from the landfill each year and prove that resale is fashionable. This season’s styles reimagine classic leopard, zebra, and snake patterns with exaggerated scales, vibrant tones, and abstract details. Whether it’s a

statement coat or a printed handbag, these wild designs add instant edge and energy. The “polished elegance” trend for Fall 2025 aims for a refined, sophisticated, and comfortable aesthetic that combines classic elements with modern updates. It encourages thoughtful layering, luxurious fabrics, and a cohesive color scheme, emphasizing quality and timelessness over fleeting trends.

The “Tailoring 2.0” trend on the runway is characterized by a fresh approach to classic tailoring, incorporating relaxed proportions, versatility, and subtle nods to comfort and individual expression. This season’s skirts bring fresh structure, volume, and texture to any outfit. Designers are swapping basic bottoms for bold silhouettes think sculpted wraps, voluminous midis, and statement shapes. Look for unique fabrics and standout cuts that can elevate even a simple tee. Statement belts are a major trend for Fall 2025, characterized by bold designs, oversized buckles, and eye-catching details. They are not just functional accessories but are used to elevate outfits and make a fashion statement. Expect to see a variety of styles, including wide belts, embellished belts, and those with unique patterns and textures. For more information visit leessummitmo.clothesmentor.com

LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

30

D E C OR T R E N D S | L I FE + CU LT U RE

ARTICLE BY TYLER AMADEUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADRIEN KING AND ALEC WALWORTH

IN

this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture

for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives. In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble— like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans— may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. CONTINUED >

Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

ARTICLE BY JOHN BEAUDOIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Some may say Marlo Demark has a magnetic personality.

Lee’s Summit woman pins her passion to fashion OK, all puns aside, the 20-year Lee’s Summit resident and creatively-driven accessory-aficionado has been creating fashionable accessories since her first patent was obtained in 2010. Over that decade and into 2018 - when she formally started her company, Heartware Magnetic - Demark’s shoe clips became the must-have accessory for all ages and styles.

36

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | LO CA L SE RVICE S

During her “previous life” as a buyer for accessories and footwear, Demark says she always loved vintage items and shoe clips. And through rigorous testing, she perfected her craft. “I was trying to stay a little more sustainable and create something that I could wear on my own shoes,” Demark said. “Then I came up with the idea of the magnetic component. Through trial and error, I came up with the correct formula to create clips that wouldn’t fall off.” Sensible spending was the catalyst to crystallizing her ideas, too. “It wasn’t realistic for me to have a pair of shoes for every outfit, so I decided to work on creating ornaments to customize my own footwear and not have to purchase a pair of shoes for every ensemble,” she said. As her shoe clips soared into the accessorizing stratosphere, Demark began to expand her horizons. “I would see people wearing them all over and it started to open my eyes to all the applications,” Demark began, “wearing it on their scarves, in addition to footwear, and really wear this any which way but loose - hats, scarves, lapels.” And, while it’s one thing to work your company up to essential-accessory phenom, when a major hit show starts featuring your work - well, that’s next-level. The CBS drama ‘Elsbeth’ began displaying broaches made by Demark - much to her surprise. So she reached out to the show’s costume designer and sent a line sheet of potential options to appear in the upcoming third season. “I watched the show, I knew the characters, and I love vintage and knew I could create some one-ofa-kind pieces,” Demark said, adding that CBS ultimately selected around 30 units from a small catalog she created.

It will almost be like Demark is going to walk the red carpet herself come Oct. 12 - the Season 3 premiere of ‘Elsbeth.’ “The season premiere will be my premiere,” she said. ‘I’ll get to see my product every week on CBS. That’s beyond exciting.” A truly entrepreneurial success story, Demark and Heartware can be found online at holiday markets around Kansas City. “I love to network with my fellow creators, we get together quite often to discuss where we are with certain levels of our business,” she said. “I love it when you can find other women who share in that spirit. We are here to root each other on and help each other. We share ideas about markets and other information on a weekly basis. It’s wonderful when you find your community as a small business owner. It’s nice to know you have like-minded people on your side.” Find Heartware at myheartware.com, on Instagram @heartwaremagnetic and Clothes Mentor in Lee's Summit.

EXPERIENCE Lakeside Living

Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 4, 2025, as the beloved Lake Lotawana Homes Tour returns from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This highly anticipated biennial event offers an exclusive glimpse into six stunning homes nestled along the shores of Lake Lotawana, and it’s all for a great cause. Hosted by the Lake Lotawana Community Club (LLCC), the tour serves as the organization’s primary fundraiser. Established over 80 years ago, the LLCC became a 509(a)(2) tax-exempt nonprofit in 2024 and remains deeply committed to enriching the community.

Through scholarships, vocational grants, and monthly donations to local nonprofits such as Lee’s Summit Social Services and Hope House, the LLCC continuously supports youth and residents in meaningful ways. The club also hosts blood drives, school supply events, and holiday gift baskets, and maintains the community’s cherished Memorial Garden. This year’s tour is presented by Starr Homes, a premier Kansas City-based custom home builder known for crafting architecturally distinctive and luxurious homes. Their sponsorship reflects the same commitment to quality and community that makes the Homes Tour such a special event. Tour-goers will enjoy the unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Lake Lotawana not just from inside the homes but also from the water. Thanks to the complimentary pontoon boat taxi service, guests can cruise between homes or simply take in the lake’s serene views. Boats can be boarded at each home and at Marina 27, the lake’s upscale seafood and steak restaurant. Tickets are available at the Lake Lotawana Community Club on the day of the Homes Tour, October 4 at 1 Lake Lotawana Rd, Lake Lotawana, MO 64086. Whether you drive or float your way through the tour, this one-of-a-kind event is the perfect way to celebrate lakeside living while supporting a cause that continues to give back to generations of residents. Don’t miss your chance to experience the magic of Lake Lotawana. www.facebook.com/llcommunityclub

THE CAPSULE WARDROBE EVERY MAN SHOULD OWN ARTICLE BY AMANI SKALACKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMMALEE RATHSAM

Style doesn’t have to be complicated.

A capsule wardrobe is all about quality over quantity — a streamlined collection of timeless pieces that work together and never go out of style. Think of it as the backbone of your closet, where every item earns its place and serves a purpose. Originally, the concept of a capsule wardrobe was geared toward men — not because men chase trends, but often because they skip the basics. Many overlook the power of having well-made, versatile staples that make dressing effortless. So, what should be in a man’s capsule collection? Start with the essentials: a tailored wool or cashmere blazer, straight-leg denim in both a dark and casual wash, a structured wool overcoat, and a solid cotton or wool sweater for layering. Add a crisp button-down shirt — or two — and you’ve built the foundation.

Stick to timeless colors: navy, olive green, grey, khaki, chocolate brown, and black. These shades mix and match with ease and always look sharp. For patterns, heritage classics like plaid, check, herringbone, and houndstooth add depth without overwhelming the look. When it comes to fabric, focus on the good stuff — cashmere, cotton, denim, and wool. These materials age well, hold their shape, and elevate even the simplest outfit. Once you’ve nailed the core pieces, dressing becomes second nature. Whether you’re heading to the office, out on the weekend,
