Also, understand potential trade-offs. If you decide you need to save more for your children’s education, how will it affect your retirement goals?

Then, invest appropriately for it. For a long-term goal, such as retirement, you’ll likely invest for growth. For a shorter-term goal, such as paying for an international vacation in a few years, you may want to invest more conservatively.

You may have multiple financial goals – and each requires a specific investment strategy. But all these strategies should follow a similar process, so it’s important to take the right steps at the right time. This content was provided by Edward Jones for use by your local, Lee’s Summit financial advisors. Member SIPC

Finally, monitor your progress toward each goal. If you think you’re not on track, you may need to adjust your strategies. Achieving your financial goals takes time, effort and commitment. But by following the most appropriate strategies for your situation, you’ve got a path that can help lead you to success. www.edwardjones.com

First, define each of your goals. Instead of just saying you want to retire comfortably, create a vision of what that retirement looks like. Will you travel? Pursue your hobbies? Spend time with family members?

Match your financial goals with the right strategies

Next, estimate how much your goal will cost to achieve.

Truth time. Are you a fan of shorter days and the hum of cicadas, or do you cling to every last vestige of summer as long as possible? It’s not even a question for me. I. Love. Fall! Even though I’m a victim of ragweed and the fury it unleashes each year, there’s just something about crisp mornings, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the sulfuric scent of a fire that feeds my soul.  I do recognize that for every ‘pumpkin spice is my everything’ friend I have, there’s one who views fall as nothing but the gateway to ice and snow, but surely we can all agree that Mother Nature does some pretty spectac ular work when the seasons change. I think it’s the change that appeals to me - I tend to be a creature of habit, and while routine is comforting, there’s something to be said for shifting gears and hitting the ‘refresh’ button on home decor and my clothes.

Growing up, going back to school meant getting a new pair of shoes, some jeans - Gloria Vanderbilt or Calvin Klein, anyone?! - and a few new tops. As evidenced by the fashion features in this issue, some of the trends from my younger years are reemerging this fall; if only I’d kept some of those ‘anchor pieces’! My school experiences were pretty traditional, and while I loved almost everything about those in-person educational oppor tunities (minus having my mom for a teacher as a freshman in high school… that didn’t help my cool factor at all), the option of an online learning envi ronment as described in our story on the R7 Elementary Online Academy would likely have made sense for some of my classmates. That’s one of the cool things about technology. Don’t get me wrong; I’m a huge fan of living life in person, reading ‘real’ books and learning how to count change back when making a purchase, but I believe there are times and circumstances where it makes sense for students to have the option for alternative instruction. Like anything else, if the passion, accountabil ity and commitment of those involved remains consistent, the outcome is likely to be positive and impactful. Learning and growing can happen in a multitude of ways. So whether you’re team summer or team fall, team in-school or team online, enjoy the stories we’ve curated for you this month and embrace your opportunities to learn and grow this season.

TRANSITIONING THE TRENDS

get it

Statement pieces: Feathered pieces such as a trimmed skirt/ top, faux leather in jackets, pants, skirts (in both neutrals and bold colors), and a statement coat that you can elevate any look with! keep it 2022 is full of nostalgia, so likely some of those pieces you've kept for years are coming back in style: cargo pants, school girl academia looks, penny lane coats, platform boots, mom jeans, clogs/loafers. Additionally, keep those white tank tops, blazers, black trousers, and top handle bags!

toss it

PERFECT PATTERNS

Another trend we are seeing is mixing prints and layering prints on prints! While this may seem daunting, follow some of these ‘loose’ rules and have fun: pair a smaller, fine print with a larger, bold print to avoid too much clashing and conflict ing focus. When mixing prints, keep accessories and jewelry to a minimum, and try to style patterns within similar color families.

MIX IT UP Layering is a fun way to utilize pieces multiple times without ‘repeating’ an out fit! You can mix a blazer with a pair of jeans, loafers, and white tank top for a more casual look, or throw it over a dress and some platform shoes for an elevated night out! Pick your favorite knits and layer over simpler pieces, grab a plaid jacket to layer for a preppy, in-style look, or a vest and relaxed button up.

LOVE YOUR LAYERS

Here are some things you can push to the back of your closet for now: tailored garments (oversized looks are in!), bell sleeves (look for puffy, statement sleeves), cold shoulder tops (go for more plung ing or square necklines), stilettos (platforms are in!), all denim looks (plaid is taking over!) and animal print (try metallics!).

“Colorful attire such as bold pinks and oranges, along with pretty pastels, are going to be everywhere this fall! With these bright color trends, you’ll be able to keep some of those pieces you may have purchased in the spring or summer around a little while longer and utilize layering to continue wearing them into the fall and winter months. However, with that said, all you neutral lovers have nothing to worry about - neutral colors are still in; you’re just going to see brighter, more saturated colors in the market as well,” says Bondon.

You may have heard of something called ‘dopamine dressing’, focusing on dressing to enhance your mood. While we strive to do that with all our customers, we love helping our fashion-lovers pair saturated colors (think pink and red, or orange and purple) and adding bright pops of color with accessories, jewelry and bags!

. 21| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/LEESSUMMITSEPTEMBER 2022

Plaids and houndstooth are back and brighter than ever! In addition to neutral patterns and prints, you’re going to see brighter greens, pinks and yellows. The schoolgirl trend is staying, and tweed fabrics and plaid prints will help you achieve this look. One or two preppy pieces paired with a simple cardigan, turtleneck, and footwear is all it takes to look excellent.

ARTICLE BY ALICIA HOLECEK PHOTOGRAPHY BY HONDO PEARCY AND TINA GARRETT A DREAM DEFERRED INSPIRED BY | ARTS + CULTURE24

CONTINUED > 25| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/LEESSUMMITSEPTEMBER 2022

Drawn to cowboys and dancers, Tina tends to paint people “who put in the same kind of heart and soul effort into their craft as I do to mine.” Many of Tina’s paintings play with a romantic, sultry feel, but there is something else. Visually, Garrett cap tures external beauty, but she elevates the subjects and gives them warmth, depth and charm. These characters, like Tina, seem to have grit. Tina’s climb to fame began in Lee’s Summit just a decade ago. In 2011, Tina was working as a graphic designer and illustrator when her employer filed for bankruptcy. She found herself at a career crossroads. After exploring options, and with a lot of sup port from her husband Adam, Tina decided to reinvent herself.

INSPIRED BY | ARTS + CULTURE Master Artist Tina Garrett says she has always considered her self a romantic. She shamelessly loves beautiful songs, beautiful movies, beautiful clothing, beautiful faces. It is easy to see that beauty reflected in her paintings.

“Once I settled on following my childhood dream of becoming a painter, I went after it relentlessly,” she says.  With a portfolio of only a few wall murals, Tina knew she would have to teach herself how to do art again. She approached women who inspired her and asked if she could paint them. Her first show was called “The Women of Lee’s Summit.”  350 peo ple showed up to support her. Though it was the first and only show Tina did in pastels, she used those portraits to apply for a scholarship at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, where she learned how to paint in oils. Tina needed a program that was flexible enough for her to master techniques while also working within the parameters of raising two elementary school aged children. She would travel to Scottsdale for weeklong intensives, soak in everything she could during those lessons, then return home and train from her notes.

Luckily, Tina was paired with teachers who branch from the trunk of Living Master Artist and author Richard Schmid. Tina says, “Richard’s philosophy on creating work was one of the rea sons that I grew so quickly. He believes you don’t own what you know, and you have a responsibility to pay it forward. If you love great art, you want the next artist to know how to do things.” Tina is grateful for learning from great communicators who are also generous and kind. She continues the tradition by passing on her knowledge through mentoring, workshops, blogs and videos.

26

INSPIRED BY | ARTS + CULTURE In fact, Tina finds mentoring to be her greatest accomplish ment professionally. Tina says she never really wanted to be a teacher and tells the story of an early experiment with elementary school substitute teaching as a self-described disaster. However, as she traveled back and forth from Scottsdale and posted about her experiences on social media, a rural group of artists asked if she would show them what she was learning.

Winning numerous prizes and awards, Tina’s paintings have been shown globally. Kara Ross, Co-Chair and Chief Operating Officer of the Art Renewal Center (ARC) hails Garrett as “one of the most recognized women artists in Contemporary Western Art.” Recently, Tina has had paintings represented at Sotheby’s, which helps pave the way for other current and future representational artists to get a foothold in the famous auction house.  Tina Garrett has advice for any new artist, regardless of their medium. A life mantra that she has passed on to her children, and directives that have been a constant guide to her journey: “Be brave. Be authentic. Be unapologetic.”  Beautiful words from a beautiful woman.

28

To see more of Tina’s work, please check out her website at www.artisttinagarrett.com

“I absolutely love where I live!” she exclaims. “We love looking at the historic homes and talking to neighbors. All of the unique shops and restaurants, the farmers market—I can’t imagine doing what I do on the teaching end without it.”

“Within an hour of teaching, I was as high as a kite. I loved it immediately. It is equal to the feelings I get when I am actually painting myself,” she says.

Tina says empowering other artists is important work. “Spending time with another artist to help them meet their goals feels like exactly what I am supposed to be doing. I feel like a par ent, like a guide, that sees the potential and a source of creativity that could burn brighter if it just had a little bit of reassurance and pointing in the right direction.”  Tina continues to offer workshops in her 1920s Tudor style home in downtown Lee’s Summit. She and Adam converted the basement to a teaching studio, and they welcome students from the world over. Appreciating all that Lee’s Summit has to offer, Tina is enthu siastic about sharing her community with her students.

Learning Virtually ARTICLE BY LIFESTYLE STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LSR7 Innovative R-7 Elementary Online Academy serves students in the community and beyond. TREND SETTER | EDUCATION34

Regardless of the ‘why’ for choosing online school, teachers say relationship-building is one of the most meaningful facets of virtual learning. Kindergarten R7EOA teacher Samantha Richardson feels she gets to know more about her students; “the amount of communication with my students and parents is key to our success. I get to know them so much more, personally and academically, and I get to know their families: brothers, sisters, grand parents, pets, etc. Without the interruptions of a tradi tional school setting, I can experience more one-on-one time with my students.”

For a growing number of students, however, no transpor tation is necessary to attend school, as their classrooms areThevirtual. Lee’s Summit R-7 Elementary Online Academy (R7EOA) is in its third year of offering virtual educa tion to students not just in Lee’s Summit but across the state. Accredited through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and administered through the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, curricula follows that of the district’s in-person schools and is acces sible by families across the state through the Missouri Course Access and Virtual School Program (MOCAP).

Parents are also seeing the value of the individualized attention. “What turned out to be amazing for my son was how he focused and connected with his teacher that didn’t happen even when he was in person. There’s so much communication and availability. He’s learning better in a less distracting environment; it’s just what’s best for him,” added Marissa Ryba. For those wondering whether online instruction is as collaborative and rigorous as in person learning, accord ing to teachers there’s nothing to fear. “Students interact with their teacher every day, just like in person. They also have time to interact with other students each day in both social and collaborative activities. Students complete les sons in all subjects daily and have daily assignments to turn in. However, there is a flexibility to online learning that in-person learning doesn’t provide. If a student has a doc tor appointment, the parents let me know, and then they access the recorded lessons and posted assignments later.

Sick students don’t have to miss school, because they can either still attend meetings, or just watch the recordings if they don’t feel up to being on a meeting,” said Stephanie Ford, second grade R7EOA teacher. While passionate about their craft, R7EOA teachers say there are some common misconceptions about online learning. “I often hear people say that Online Academy is only a partial learning experience, or that it is only for stu dents who have medical concerns. We are for ANY elemen tary student! I also think it is assumed that students are stuck on their Chromebook in meetings all day long (or the opposite, that lessons are entirely self paced). In reality,

Reasons for families choosing online learning are as diverse as the students themselves. Some families choose virtual school due to learning styles or health issues, while others may be involved in competitive performance activ ities that require significant travel and benefit from the consistent accessibility of online instruction.  Marissa Ryba, parent of an incoming third-grade student from Kirkwood, MO said “initially we chose to have Kaspar go online because of health concerns, and our intention was for it to be a temporary decision, but his progress has been so explosive that we’ve chosen to maintain this learn ing environment; for example he’s learning time manage ment as a second grader, and that blows my mind.”

The term ‘back to school’ often brings to mind visions of backpacks, clothes shopping and learning new bus routes.

TREND SETTER | EDUCATION

students do interact in a variety of asynchronous (inde pendent) and synchronous (live) activities daily,” said Ford. At the end of the day, academic and personal growth are the goals of both in-person and online schools, and R7EOA teachers report much success in both areas.

Although many R7 Elementary Online Academy students are from the Lee’s Summit area, enrollment is available to any grade K-5 student in Missouri via the MOCAP program.

Ford says “This year I had a student come to my Online Academy class from in-person learning. He had been sig nificantly struggling with behaviors at school and had missed out on a lot of instruction time. Once he came online,  his family and I were able to work together, along with our online special education teacher, and with their support from home, we were able to signifi cantly increase his engagement in learning. He made so much progress and was one of my model students during live Similarly, meetings!”Richardson feels that although online teach ing requires more up-front planning than traditional in-person teaching, she is able to finish the expected curriculum easily by the end of the year due to fewer daily interruptions and the ability to meet with students during their asynchronous learning time. “Our online students are receiving the same curriculum, the same expectations

for higher learning, the same small group reading, pos itive reinforcement and relationship building as their in-person peers. My favorite saying is Virtual Education: Different, Not Less!”

From a parent perspective, Ryba says the academic progress is evident, “I’m very analytical. His progress is documented - I love seeing his NWEA reading score, which is standardized, so we know how he’s doing compared to other students his age.”

For more information about the R7 Elementary Online Academy, MOCAP or to enroll your student, visit https:// r7oa.lsr7.org

R7EOA Administrator Dr. Joy Brigman sums it up this way. “We are proud to offer families a choice when it comes to educating their child.  The Online Academy provides a topnotch learning experience that replicates in-person learn ing with greater benefits.  Our dedicated teachers connect with kids and families at levels deeper than available at a typical brick and mortar school.  Our small class sizes and flexible schedule afford children personalized instruction tailored to meet their needs.”

Students like Malia conduct science experiments and other projects at home, just as they would in a typical classroom setting, sharing their observations with their classmates.

“I designed some with orange shirts with blue pockets and orange shirts with orange pockets,” Kamden said. “I had a homeschool out fit where the homeschooler was just in pajamas with slippers.”

Kamden is likely the youngest clothing designer in Lee’s Summit - if not the Midwest - and credits some of his fashion journey to the throwback tie, an accessory he favors and has an eye for designing.

“There’ssuggestions.acouple things I would want to do for the training out fits,” he said. “At boot camp, they should have short sleeve shirts (because) where they train it is really hot and they always have to wear long sleeves.”

As for his $6,000, Anna says Kamden kept $1,000 for spending on Zulily for clothing and the rest went to his college savings, “and maybe just a couple of Nerf guns.”

OUR TOWN | SHOPPING

“When we would lay his clothes out, he would throw a bowtie on the outfit, regardless,” she recalls. “And if he didn’t have some thing to match, he would come downstairs and say, ‘we have to find something else.’”

“I

any.designedhaven’tshoes,lovebutIYet.” 42

Heck, they’re back for under-10 fashion, as far as he’s concerned.

“I also had athletic clothes like comfy shorts you can play out side in, same thing with shirts, and a ‘teacher’s pet’ with a big, big bowtie and a suit on.”

If you ask 9-year-old Kamden McGraw, bowties are definitely back for men’s fashion.

“A lot of orange and black for the fall. It really gives out that Halloween spirit, the orange mixes with the orange leaves falling from the trees,” he said. “For the winter, flannel shirts (solids) and jackets to keep warm.”

One might think Kamden’s career track would be set out already, given his early success in fashion. But he says he’s con sidering joining the Army or becoming a police or firefighter. Or, designing clothes. If he does go military, however, he has a few design

“It started one day when I wore a bowtie to the first day of school. I really liked that style and I wanted to keep wearing them to school,” he said. “I don’t know how many (bowties he has designed),” Kamden said, “but I can say it’s a lot.”

So what’s in for this fall? Kamden - who is trendspotting Back-toSchool clothes found on Zulily - says go with the seasonal colors.

Up next for Kamden? Possibly a shoe design.

Through his instant fashion-designing success, the now homeschooled fourth grader is quite the influencer - or as Zulily labels it - a “trend-spotter.” As such, Kamden gets a say in show ing the online retailer what he thinks will be in style for kids in any given season.

At one point, Anna heard about a contest through online retailer Zulily - one that would pay a handsome $6,000 for the winner of a kid’s fashion design contest. Kamden got to work, creating both resort wear and swimwear collections, among other creations.

Kamden’s mother, Anna, doesn’t have a number either. She just remembers the start of a trend where her son was very specific about what he wore to Hawthorn Hill Elementary.

WHY YOU NEED A PLAN

Once you find a template that works best for your child, be sure to tailor it specifically for their needs.

WHAT IS AN ASTHMA ACTION PLAN?

When your child is with you, you probably know exactly what to do and how to manage any asthma attacks. However, your child will not always be with you. There’s school, camp, extracurricular activities, grandparents and other family members, daycare, and sitters. You can’t expect everyone to know exactly how to care for your child, especially in a setting that includes several children. Plus, for a school or other institution, they’ll probably require an asthma action plan so they know exactly what to do and when.

Keep a copy of your child’s asthma action plan in your home and let everyone know where it’s located. You can make copies of that plan or create alternative plans for school, daycare, and any other place your child frequents (see AAFA for variations on the initial action plan).

Tel. (816) 524-5600 Fax. (816) 525-2697

• American Lung Association

In short, an asthma action plan is written documentation of how to manage asthma at every stage. This includes medication, your child’s specific reaction to certain triggers, what to do when an attack occurs, and when it’s time to take your child to get medical attention. Thankfully, you don’t have to build this plan from scratch since several reputable organizations offer templates, including:

As your child gets older, the plan should be amended and shared with them. An asthma action plan is suggested for people of all ages, and as a child grows, it’s important to empower them to take control of their own healthcare needs.

When you have a child with asthma, there are certain accommodations you must make to manage it. One of the things that too many parents don’t have is an asthma action plan. This is imperative for people of any age, and as a parent of a child with asthma, you should have one in place for their care. What does that action plan include and how do you create it?
