What to Pack in Your Diaper Bag for an Unexpected Urgent Care Visit

Medical Records: Your child’s medical records include immunizations, any medicines they take, and any allergies they have. Most pediatricians will provide you with a master immunization record, which you should copy to pack in your diaper bag. Alternatively, if you have electronic records, that will work as well. Your medical records should include the name and contact information of your primary pediatrician, so you can share that with the doctor at urgent care.

No one wants to take a child to urgent care, but whether it’s for a fever, broken bone, or trouble breathing, there are times when such a visit is necessary. To be ready, there are essentials to pack in your diaper bag to make the situation easier for you and your child.

Diaper Bag Essentials You may have a diaper bag set aside just for emergencies, or you may use the same bag you use every day. Regardless, the essentials will be the same for all babies and toddlers. These include: • • • • • • •

Diapers: 3–5 Plastic bags for soiled diapers and clothes Wipes, tissues and hand sanitizer Change of clothes and changing pad Snacks, such as bottles with dry formula that can be easily reconstituted with water; cereal, and teething biscuits; jarred baby food; or sippy cup Snacks for grown-ups, including protein bars and bottles of water Toys and activities, such as teething rattlers, a blanket, stuffed toys, books, or even an iPad

Emergency-specific Items to Pack in Your Diaper Bag Once your diaper bag is ready to go with everyday essentials, you’ll want to add several items to help expedite care for an unexpected urgent care visit. The items to keep in your to-go emergency bag include:

Insurance Information: You’ll want quick access to your insurance card when you visit urgent care or the hospital. Consider making a copy of your card (front and back) to always have in your to-go bag and take a picture of the front and back of insurance cards to store in your phone. Along with your insurance cards, you should have a picture of your ID (probably your driver’s license) in your bag. If your child has a passport, keep that (or a facsimile) in the bag as well. Medicine: If your child takes medicine regularly, such as an asthma inhaler, or has the need for an EpiPen for allergies, you should include these items to pack in your diaper bag. Even though you’ll be heading toward medical care, it’s always best to be prepared to meet your child’s specific needs yourself. Phone Charger: Pop an extra phone charger in your bag as well. If you are at urgent care for a long time, you’ll want to be in touch with other family members and caregivers to share updates on your child.

Apple pie, baseball and the Stars and Stripes waving proudly; it doesn’t get much more American than that. July promises to bring celebrations of our nation’s freedoms, and while most of us likely treasure childhood memories of hot dogs, watermelon, fireworks and popsicles, there are many who have given so much to ensure we are able to enjoy these idyllic times year after year, and we should honor them. For me, growing up in small-town mid-Missouri, I know I didn’t fully appreciate the magnitude of our country’s annual celebration. Sure I paid tribute to veterans with my hand over my heart while I sang the national anthem, but I honestly didn’t give much thought to the sacrifices of our forefathers and the commitment they had to have had to seeing a vision of a democracy come to fruition - the land of opportunity and equality. Sometimes I wonder how a nation predicated on such simple ideals can have gone so far astray. It seems everywhere we look these days, media sources are encouraging us to focus on our polarity rather than our shared values - and finding a group to support whatever marginalized population you’d like is as simple as googling a few key words. Call me old school and/ or idealistic, but I believe the more we focus on the ‘I’ the less we can do to grow the ‘we’. We need to collectively commit to finding commonalities rather than differences. One of my favorite features in this issue celebrates the life of Buck O'Neil. I had the opportunity to meet Buck O’Neil in person several times. If ever there was a man with good cause to focus on polarity and the injustices of the world, it would be him; however, if you knew Buck, you knew that his commitment was to bringing people together and focusing on relationship. To put it simply, he believed love was the answer. On several occasions I witnessed the power of him engaging audiences by asking them to hold hands and sing with him a simple song lyric….”The greatest thing in all my life is loving you.” Buck’s love wasn’t contingent upon a shared political stance or skin color, and ours shouldn’t be either.

As a pioneer in the local niche market, Owner Sara Garris had the vision, talent and drive to be the first to bring luxury picnics, bell tents and Kata Tipis to the KC area. Her design background, editing eye and creative gift for making spaces beautiful have all contributed to the elevated look at her events. Established in 2018, Wonder & Whimsy Events in Parkville provides an “authentic and memorable experience” to commercial and residential events with unique rental tents, furnishings and decor to provide visually stunning surroundings. “It began with a Tipi,” Sara says. “I fell madly in love with the impressive Tipis when I first laid eyes on them, and I knew other people would love them too.” As a one-woman show with help from family and friends, Sara saw a need for going beyond the typical rental options and services. “Being in the Midwest we always seem to get anything fun or new dead last. I’m here to change that.” From backyard parties to large-scale events at Union Station and at the Nelson, Wonder & Whimsy Events brings the bling, the rustic charm or the boho chic to wedding proposals, date nights, graduation picnics, kids’ events, charitable fundraisers or corporate events. Their biggest trend is luxury picnics. “Luxury picnics are receiving the most buzz over anything that we do,” Sara says. “It was a trend in 2020-21 and is still going strong.”

Prior to starting her business, Sara worked as a director for an interior design showroom and was the lead designer for Pottery Barn on the Plaza. She’s also a wife to her husband, Ron, and a mom to their two kids Arrow, 6, and Feather, 3. “The three of them are the loves of my life,” Sara says. “As a stay-at-home-mom, my mission is to find a healthy work/life balance to ensure I have quality time with my family.” Sara says the Covid pandemic was oddly a boost to business as she shifted from large events to smaller, intimate ones. “I had to pivot quickly, and that’s when the luxury picnic and bell tent business was born. It was wildly successful and has sustained itself.” As a small event planner/liaison for clients, Sara loves collaborating with other local businesses, especially Jami and Laura of Good Stuff China. “Together we design amazing tablescapes, and I couldn’t do it without them!” She adds that she is always open to event ideas or collaborations, and her dream client would be the family of Patrick Mahomes. Because Sara makes events look effortlessly beautiful, people sometimes assume it’s easy. “The setup literally takes us hours and is physically demanding, but the hard work is always worth it when our clients are thrilled,” she says. “I love watching the look of awe on people’s faces. It’s so fun and fulfilling knowing they get to enjoy their beautiful surroundings, even for a short time.”

Taylor Triano, owner of Commonwild Flag Co is anything but common. The native Kansas Citian and University of Kansas textile design graduate is an entrepreneur, an artist, a seamstress, a nostalgic. She specializes in custom flag creations and one-of-a-kind private commissions. And though Commonwild Flag Co is a one-woman shop, Triano is not a one-trick pony. Taylor explains her product, “the word ‘flag’ gets thrown around a lot, but what I do is essentially art on a wall. Often times, it is in flag form, but it can also be a beautiful piece to hang anywhere.” There are so many options for textile art, according to Triano: a wall hanging for a nursery

with the baby’s name, customized pennants, a special piece to be framed, a flag for your boat, or a banner for your wedding. “My main medium is fiber, meaning I work primarily with fabric in some form or another. However, design is a big part of what I do.” She has also been hired to paint logos on window fronts, construct interior wall murals and adorn outdoor awnings. What started out as a favor for a friend has turned Commonwild Flag Co into a thriving business. Taylor says, “Commonwild was more or less just an accidental snowball resulting from a friend asking if I could make some sort of a flag for his restaurant to cover one of the TVs. I was not new to

the medium, but it was a new avenue, and I found myself really drawn to the project.” Taylor enjoys the learning and challenges that come with custom projects. When designing double sided signs for the outside corner of the newly renovated Hotel Kansas City, she strategically added rows of grommets to allow for airf low. She also had to engineer a design that would highlight the hotel, the restaurant inside, and the downstairs bar. The heavyweight weatherproof banners were then hand constructed and hand painted. While examples of Taylor’s work can be found all over Kansas City, her handiwork also stretches to other major cities nationwide.

A recent project took her to the brand-new UBS Arena in New York, which is the home of the New York Islanders NHL team. She was hired to make 245 feet of vintage style pennants to be strung up in Belmont Hall, a sports bar within the arena. The pennants were all hand dyed, hand cut, sewn and strung. With a quick turnaround time, she made the pennants and then flew to New York to do the installation just in time for the grand opening in November 2021. This was not Taylor’s first commission for a national sports team. She was recruited by a local design firm to execute a 10’ x 8’ historical replica of the 1876 American Centennial flag to be framed for the Chicago Clubs office building in the newly revamped Wrigley Field. “Not only was this the largest piece I have done to date, but it also required a lot of studying to achieve the era specific fabric and look/ feel of genuine distress. It was a learning challenge from start to finish. I shipped it off and three years later finally went to see it in person. I could not believe I made that; it was a proud moment,” she says of the Cubs’ project. “I specialize in and love to lean into recreating old artifacts or creating pieces that are meant to look older, like they’ve been somewhere and tell a story.” Taylor adds character to those pieces through distress and “vintage’izing” methods. Commonwild Flag Co work can also be found closer to home. “I was given full creative freedom to design a new f lag to represent the City of Lake Lotawana,” says Taylor. The large 10’ x 5’ piece is hung inside the City Hall.

Taylor says the response was so great that she had a manufacturer recreate her design on nylon flags to be hung outside the City Hall and are available to anyone who wants to order one. “This was the first time I realized I had that option, and, in the future, I can use this as a way to have my flag designs reproduced for more people to enjoy.” The Lotawana f lag has been a gateway for Taylor’s interest in additional lake products, as f lags are such an integral part of boating.

Having grown up with summers spent in the Ozarks, Taylor affirms her love for lake life is strong. When you enter the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, pay for your ticket and pass through the turnstile, a docent will be standing nearby to answer questions. He or she will tell you to start your tour on the second floor, then third and work your way down to the first floor to the actual Hall of Fame gallery. Don’t do that just yet. Tell the person you’re from Kansas City and you came to see Buck. Then turn immediately to your right, and there in a brightly lit corner is the largerthan-life bronze Buck O’Neil. This is the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2008, an honor bestowed every three years on an individual whose extraordinary efforts have enhanced baseball’s positive impact on society, broadened the game’s appeal and whose character, integrity and character are of high regard. It’s nice. It’s great even, but it’s not the Hall of Fame honor that Buck craved. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Kansas Citians in 2006 when Buck, then 94, was not inducted into the Hall of Fame. He died in October that year. Despite an exceptional career as a player in the Negro Leagues and a championship career as a manager, Buck did not meet the HOF criteria that were in place in 2006. So, the Baseball Writers Association of America reviewed and revised its criteria. Buck was such an exceptional human being, dedicating nearly eight decades to the game, that such a review and re-write was warranted. Buck O’Neil is in the Hall of Fame class of 2022 and will be inducted posthumously on July 24. It’s probably too late to get tickets for the event. Maybe it’s even too late to get a hotel room, but that shouldn’t stop you from planning a trip to Cooperstown soon to see Buck, George Brett and this charming community. Why Cooperstown? Cooperstown, NY is a village of fewer than 2,000 people on the shores of beautiful Lake Otsego. To be quite honest, it’s out in the middle of nowhere. From Kansas City, I flew to Baltimore, then to Albany, then rented a car. The first 45 minutes was on I-88, then I turned on a state road, which dwindled to a county road wriggling around past farms and cows. I was determined that Siri was lost, but suddenly, there was Cooperstown.

Named for the family of author James Fenimore Cooper, the entire village is on the National Register and is as perfect an example of Americana as any Norman Rockwell painting. An impressive folk art museum bears the Fenimore name. Susan B. Anthony spoke at the Presbyterian Church. There’s an opera festival each summer. So why the Baseball Hall of Fame way out here? It’s a largely debunked myth that baseball was invented in Cooperstown. The story goes that in 1839, Abner Doubleday gathered some kids in a horse pasture and made up the game of baseball. The fact is humans have been hitting balls with sticks since the beginning of time, but a visit to Doubleday Field is still a joyous experience. Jeff Katz, president of Friends of Doubleday Field, leads the morning tours and remembers Buck O’Neil. “He would sit right there with a smile on his face and talk with everyone who came by,”; said Katz, pointing to a spot near the dugouts. “He was a warm, humble human being and a gift to this game.” They remember Buck at the Otsego Inn as well. It’s the historic property that sits right on the lake where all Hall of Famers, their guests and other VIPs stay during induction week.

“Oh, I remember his storytelling,” said my waiter at the Hawkeye Bar & Grill at the Otsego. “He always had a crowd around him. Everyone loved Buck’s stories. Main Street Cooperstown is part small-town shopping and part touristy souvenir shops. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth and Carl Yastrzemski have shops; however, if you buy a Cooperstown bat, remember to place it in your checked luggage. TSA will confiscate it otherwise. The Hall of Fame and Museum sit on the west end of Main Street, slightly back from the street so that some people miss it when they first drive by. But it’s like candy land for baseball fans, with history, facts and trivia galore. Before you reach Buck O’Neil’s, statue, you’ll first encounter the trio of Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente called “Character & Courage,” reminding us that becoming a Hall of Famer is about more than skill on the field. And that’s why Buck O’Neil is in the Hall of Fame, because he brought more to the game (and Kansas City) than any statistic could ever measure. Making memories in your own backyard ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEANN PARKER Growing up, my family spent long portions of our summers at my grandparents’ house on Lake Michigan in Door County, WI. It is a place where all of my good memories live. We didn’t need much entertainment and certainly didn’t have electronics back then. Our days were filled with paddling around in Opa’s worn out red canoe, painting on white rocks, fishing and exploring the great northern woods. I personally loved bird watching and documenting the song births as they built their nests, laid and hatched their eggs and finally flew away. In addition to all of our outdoor play, we would take a day to visit the art galleries where my Oma and my Aunt’s paintings were displayed. Hopping in and out of our favorite antique stores along the way. Only slow summers allow for those sorts of things. I treasure those slow summer days. Last year the world experienced the world's longest summer, quite literally. My kids were home for a solid six months with

nothing but nature to entertain them and while it was quite a shock, they were able to experience what slow summer days could truly be like. Although I am so thankful that there are more things scribbled on the calendar this year, I also don’t want to lose the slowing down that we experienced last summer. I know my kids would like that too. In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? Beach Ball Garland Have you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed? It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!

MATERIALS • 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36) • 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25) • Thin rope or twine • Air pump

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while! 2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go. 3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end. 4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.

Watermelon Cake A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

2 large watermelons Assortment of berries and fruit 4 wooden skewers Toothpicks Whipped Cream (optional) Fresh Mint (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller. 2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center. 3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place. 4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.
