Help Protect Your Family’s Inheritance Investing in an IRA is a great way to save for retirement. But if you don’t need all the money, you may want to leave what’s left to your children or grandchildren. What’s the best way to do this? Until recently, when you left the proceeds of your IRA to your beneficiaries, they could “stretch” required withdrawals over their life expectancies. These required withdrawals were generally taxable, so this “stretch IRA” was a good way to reduce the annual taxes due and benefit from longer taxdeferred growth potential. But recent legislation has greatly limited the stretch IRA strategy, so you may need to look for alternatives. For example, you could convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA during your lifetime. By doing so, you would pay taxes on the amount converted, so your heirs could generally take withdrawals tax-free. Another option is to purchase life insurance to ensure a specific dollar amount is passed on or to help your heirs cover taxes on their inheritance. Consult with your tax and financial professionals before taking action. The more thorough your planning, the better the chance of meeting your legacy goals. LIFESTYLE LETTER

Find your 'yes'

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Laura Paszkiewicz | laura@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

True story. When my kids were little, I was terrified of my husband and I flying together because, what if, you know… I recognize (and did even then) that statistically my fears were unlikely to come to fruition, but I let it limit our adventures. Although we took a few family trips requiring air travel when they were young, most of our excursions were sports related. We made some great memories and awesome friends, but it might also at least partially explain my penchant for getting away - both near and far - these days. When I left my career in education, I committed to saying ‘yes’ to as many travel opportunities as I could afford, and I’m loving having the chance to visit so many new places now. If you’re a wanderer like me and enjoy a getaway every now and again, you’re going to love reading our features this month! You’ll be able to live vicariously through a local young woman who has dared to turn her dreams into reality in a way few of us would have the courage to do, and you’ll learn of some great places to adventure locally. Near or far, there’s beauty and wonder to behold. Uncovering the gems in your own backyard can be particularly rewarding, as it’s easy to share them with your friends and family. This past month, we had the blessing of watching some young friends renew their vows at a gazebo overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It was breathtakingly beautiful and a great reminder that life is precious. Each day is truly a gift, and I believe we have the responsibility to make a choice each morning we wake up - see the positive and be blessed, or focus on the negative and fret about/fear the possibilities. If I could go back and advise ‘younger me’, I’d encourage her to embrace the crazy a little more, face the fear, and choose the adventure. Life is best lived in person, enjoying the small stuff, and supporting small businesses who dare to dream big and give us local options for enjoying life. I can’t turn back the hands of time, but I can - and do - choose to find as many opportunities to celebrate life as much as possible. I hope you’ll join me and commit to exploring something new this month!

Summer Is Just Around the Corner Schedule Your Summer Camp Physical Now It’s a good idea to take your children to the pediatrician regularly, even when they no longer need annual vaccinations. A summer camp physical provides the perfect opportunity for a check-in. During this appointment, your doctor will assess your child’s growth and development. They will also ensure you’re on track with all immunizations, especially those that might need to be updated for summer camp. Camps ask for these forms so they have an understanding of attendees’ abilities and limitations. Be sure to have any forms with you when you go to your physical, since they often require a doctor’s signature. Generally, a summer camp physical includes a medical history review and physical exam. If you schedule your summer camp physical with your child’s current pediatrician, they will likely be privy to this information, but it’s still good to review any potential changes. You’ll be asked about any medical problems that run in the family and medications your child takes. (That will also be important to share with the camp nurse to administer medications as needed.) If you have any concerns about your child participating in regular camp activities, be sure to bring them up during this interview. As with any well-child visit, the physical exam will include

assessing your child’s height, weight, blood pressure, heart, lungs, and eyesight. When Should You Schedule Your Physical? As with anything important, you don’t want to leave this appointment to the last minute. However, you want it to be close enough to the start of camp that you are sharing relevant information. Therefore, if camp starts in June, plan to schedule your child’s summer camp physical for April or May. At Community Choice Pediatrics We Support Your Family Year Round Whether you are preparing for summer camp, getting ready for your kiddos to start a new sport and need a sports physical, or you’re looking for a new pediatrician, Community Choice Pediatrics is here to support your family. We believe in creating a partnership between parents and pediatricians for the well-being of your children. Schedule your appointment online to get on our schedule. We look forward to meeting your family and answering your questions. READ MORE ABOUT THIS ON OUR BLOG

Adventure Local woman living the ‘van life’ is realizing her dream 18

M UST SE E | TR AVEL

London, New Zealand, Portugal, Africa, Australia, all of the US National Parks. For many of us, visiting these bucket-list destinations might seem out of reach, but Samantha Woiwood and her boyfriend Samuel are checking them off one at a time as they pursue their dream of living the ‘van life’ out of a 2006 Sprinter van. Born and raised in Lee’s Summit, Sam attended Lee’s Summit West and went on to study communications at the University of Central Missouri, where she studied abroad in Europe and her wanderlust was ignited. Following graduation she worked for Cerner and later the Kauffman Foundation as an event planner but also moonlighted at the Monarch Bar and The Guild to earn extra traveling money; Samuel also worked several jobs. They knew they loved traveling, but renting a camper van to drive up the Portugal coast on a 2019 trip convinced Sam and Samuel to make a long-term commitment to van life. “Even before the Portugal trip, I knew I wanted to live alternatively. I love the idea of being minimal and not collecting things. With any small space, it is easier to say no to buying more clothes because you literally have no space for them! I knew that deciding to live out of a van would push me to be more creative with less,” says Sam. Once back stateside, the couple began planning in earnest. “In February 2020, Samuel and I started shopping. The first van we found was a 2018 ProMaster that cost around $28,000. After considering it, we sat down to tell his parents we were going to buy this van (at this point, it was early March 2020). His dad advised us to wait and see how the pandemic played out. We thought he was being a bit dramatic, but luckily, we took his advice.” “Sure enough, Samuel lost his job the following month. I had lost my second job as a bartender and we were so relieved to not have a car payment over our heads. Shortly after that, we found a beat up 2006 Sprinter van for $3,500. We knew she needed a lot of work but we had nothing but TIME!! We now have zero debt and this helps us with being able to afford travel.”

“Making new friends comes easily: we see another van, walk over, and the next thing you know, we are sharing meals and stories!”

From planning events in copious detail to making spontaneous decisions, Sam and Samuel have adapted to van life. When asked about how they decide where to travel next, Sam said “We do zero planning! That has been the best thing. We just drive in a general direction and look on the map to see what is around us. It is truly just seeing how one adventure leads to the next. Many times, we end up meeting other van-lifers who give us recommendations on what to do and see around the area. We also try to ask locals about hidden gems. At first, having no plan was hard for me, but over time, I’ve learned that the best things are totally unplanned.” Although their plans are to drive Sintra - the van they ended up naming after their favorite city in Portugal - until she can go no more, there are some bucket-list destinations and personal goals that require alternate transportation. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa is one example.

20

M UST SE E | TR AVEL

In October 2021, Sam spent eight days with her uncle trekking up the highest mountain in Africa, a feat that whetted her appetite for climbing and inspired additional goals. Of the journey, she says “Every night when I was laying in my tent, I daydreamed about what the actual summit of the mountain would be like. On the sixth day when we actually summited Kilimanjaro, I realized the entire journey isn't actually about being on top of the mountain but about the experience I had getting there. I had experienced the trek with a team of 11 incredible men who had me laughing so hard I cried and who made sure I had food and clean drinking water. These men are now my close friends (so thankful for Facebook!)." Sam has plans to climb Mont Blanc in Switzerland and Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal later this year and would like to take a course on mountaineering so she can guide a team of her own one day. In

the meantime, she and Samuel are winding their way across the United States, soaking up experiences and building relationships as they go. She says shifting from typical suburban life to traveling full-time has been surprisingly easy. “We only have to keep track of one thing: our van! Finding parking spots is made simple by using an app on our phone. Planet Fitness gyms are littered across America, and we never have an issue finding a place to shower. People are interested in our life and are excited to share their knowledge about whatever area we are in. So many we meet offer anything they have that will make our life more comfortable. Making new friends comes easily: we see another van, walk over, and the next thing you know, we are sharing meals and stories!” Since the couple had banked their earnings for several years in preparation for their adventures, they started with a cushion but are always open to earning extra

money along the way. “Last summer we ended up in Idaho, where a distant cousin of mine was hiring raft guides for the summer. With money from raft guiding, we were able to float for months without having to touch our savings. We currently are working in New Mexico at a ski resort for the winter so we can ski for free. The paychecks are just a sweet little bonus on the side. After this job, we will travel for a while until we stumble upon another seasonal gig!” Living flexibly means they have the capacity to visit family and friends when they’d like, and Sam and Samuel are grateful for the understanding and support their families have shown them as they embrace a very nontraditional way of life. “Our families support us in so many different ways. My parents bought us a National Parks Pass that we’ve used countless times! His parents bought us an In-Reach that is a satellite phone so we can reach them even if we are out of service, camping in the woods and when we are totally off grid.”

As for areas this adventuresome duo aspires to get around to at some point, Sam says “Baja, California is a MUST. Yellowstone is also one of our top "bucket list" destinations as well as all of Central America and Canada!! Since my partner is originally from Australia we have the idea of moving to Australia and buying a van there so we can travel the coast of his homeland within the next couple of years.” With a couple years of van life under their belts, Sam has nothing but encouragement for those considering making a similar lifestyle change. “We talk to so many people who say ‘I wish I had done that when I was your age!’ If you’re interested, start saving your money; don’t be afraid to buy an older van! Vans like ours will notoriously go for a million miles! Start getting rid of stuff now. Space is limited and it forces you to realize what is actually important to you. Once you start living smaller, you actually start living larger. And lastly, just DO IT! Don't wait on others to go with you or to be ready. You have to go when YOU are ready and do what you want to do!”

OCEANS TO MOUNTAINS AND BEYOND, FAMILY EMBRACES TRAVEL

26

O UR TOWN | TR AVEL

SEAS THE GOOD LIFE The motto “work hard, play hard” isn't just a cliché for Renee Amey of RE /MAX Elite; it is a life directive. As the mom to four kids, the wife of an airline and military pilot, and one of the top real estate agents in the KC area, Renee is no stranger to hard work. In fact, she seems to thrive on it. She has built a successful real estate team in Lee’s Summit that specializes in lake properties and is dedicated to helping home buyers and sellers reach their goals. When it is time for fun, Renee applies the same passion she has for real estate to travel and enjoying experiences with her family. The Amey family has traveled all over the world. From hiking the Swiss Alps to boating through the Caribbean to surfing the waves in Hawaii, adventure seems to be a common denominator in most of their trips. Renee says, “we are not a family that sleeps in. We are up and going, and need a plan of activities to help keep the kids engaged. Hiking, horseback riding, rafting, biking--we want a list of options.” When the kids were younger, Renee and her husband, Paul, used this tactic to wear out the kids and ensure early bedtimes. Now that they are all young adults, the kids love the adventures and may even up the ante! Renee and Paul are parents to two boys and two girls. Both boys, Nick and Jake, are training to be pilots like their dad who began his career in the Navy as a fighter pilot. Their oldest daughter, Alex, lives in Maui as a labor and

ARTICLE BY ALICIA HOLECEK

delivery nurse. Sam, the baby of the group, is in her first year at the University of Southern California. Renee attributes much of her children’s success to the benefits of travel while growing up. “They have a much broader perspective, an openness to other cultures and people, and a lack of fear to experience new places and things,” she says. It is no coincidence that their daughter Alex has chosen to live in Maui, as Renee says Hawaii is one of their very favorite destinations. They have made the trip at least 20 times. For a more authentic Hawaiian experience, they love the area of Hana: remote, lush landscape filled with beautiful beaches, waterfalls, bamboo forests and even the occasional free running horses in open fields. Renee also got to dip her toes in the local real estate scene, as she helped Alex buy a home in Maui. “Whether you are in Hawaii or Missouri, having a real estate agent who really knows the area is a one of the best things they can offer you. In Maui, a deeper look at location in regards to rainy vs sunny areas of the island, wind impacts and elevation of a property, and proximity to desired towns on the island. For our business in Lee’s Summit, we strive to be the experts on all the different lake communities,” says Renee. One of Renee’s favorite parts of visiting a new location is listening to the stories that locals are usually eager to share. “People want

to tell you who they are. We have learned so much about the true lifestyles of people by simply engaging and listening.” Renee believes this also applies in her business. By listening to her clients’ priorities, she can successfully help them find the right fit in a home. While traveling is often a time of great adventure for the Amey family, Renee is a big advocate of living in a place where it can feel like vacation year-round. She cites the natural beauty of lake living, plus the entertainment available out your back door. And while she has seen an increase in the second home market in Lee’s Summit, she observes most of her buyers want to take advantage of living on a lake, with all the amenities that accompany, full time. “When you live at the lake, it does not feel like a sacrifice to come home,” she says. To get more information on the different lake communities in the area, check out the Renee Amey Realty Group at leessummitlakehomes.com.

We have found that these therapies have focused at the root of the problem and progressed through each developmental stage to improve his function, instead of just treating symptoms. Today, Seth is able to communicate his needs verbally, has finished 1st grade, reads aloud and has empathy and expression that he didn’t previously show. We are very pleased and thankful for HML Functional Care and Dr Alex’s passion for kiddos like our Seth. We can’t say enough about them.” Chiropractic Care | Interactive Metronome Neurosage Functional Neurology and Functional Medicine Therapeutic Cold Laser | Neurodevelopmental Checkups

THE SEND

32

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

During a time when negativity, darkness and divisiveness have plagued modern society, never has the hope of spiritual awakening resonated so clearly. Now, imagine the daunting task of activating a massive missional emergence that expands across ages, denominations, people and nations, and it becomes abundantly clear that this faith journey can only be ordered by God. It is within this overwhelming reality that real hope can be found. And it is The Send that is merging these immense societal needs of the people of the world with the purpose of finding their place in the great commission.

“There is a generation that is hungry, hungry for something more to live for, hungry to make a real difference, hungry to represent Jesus to the nations as He is portrayed through scriptures and how He lived out his life. This is about the least, the last and the lost.” Andy Byrd, Youth with a Mission (YWAM) This urgency now has a response. When missionary Andy Byrd and Francis Chan reflect on the history and vision of The Send, a poetic passion illuminates the room. It is a passion so driven by divine enthusiasm, and a belief that the kind actions of people would reflect what Jesus has called the world to do, that it is impossible to dismiss. The history of this calling was birthed in 2000 with the guidance of Lou Engel Ministries. This vision, The Call, has packed stadiums worldwide for 18 years with a message of prayer and fasting along with a mission of encouraging America to turn to Jesus. It was in 2018 that a team of distinct ministries began to question what could be done for the Kingdom if they really worked together in a spirit of unity and collaboration. The Call had become the catalyst in creating The Send, a movement of massive missional activation that had hopes of impacting the 3.2 billion unreached peoples of the world through the promise of the gospel. The trajectory was paved, and the response was immense. In 2019 The Send filled an Orlando stadium, resulting in a mind-blowing 58,000 people answering the call to mission fields and thousands making commitments, willing to joyfully live for something bigger than themselves. They were just getting started. What came next was further proof that God was in all the details. The Send received an invitation from Kansas City’s Arrowhead stadium. It was an opportunity to extend the gospel in the loudest stadium in the world. Byrd believes that Arrowhead could become a megaphone to the nations: Byrd explains, “How powerful that we could make a sound in that stadium: The sound of hope, the sound of the love of Jesus, the sound of hope for a generation and the sound of activation—The sound of love running across the streets of our cities and of hope running to the hardest and most difficult places. Experiencing the division in the last two years as if everything served to divide our nation whether it was politics, Covid or racial lines, it was just so painful. Three major traumatic divisions were being pushed in the nation where normally we would get one of those a decade —three in two years. At a cultural level the division was off the charts. If the church cannot be unified, how can we unite the nation?

We needed something so risky that thousands would be able to say that they are not alone.” This urgency energized an army of people, missionaries and volunteers. They toured across the U.S. hosting over 45 events, calling the nation to Kansas City. In addition The Send partnered with a 350-campus tour to spread the dream of making a difference. The church of America needs to be able to see itself as part of the solution to the crisis of the hour. This greatest mobilization across the nation is to culminate at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, May 14, 2022.

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

The ultimate goal of The Send is to encourage simple acts of the love of Jesus multiplied by ten thousand. Byrd believes people want to get on the field but that many need permission to take a step. The Send KC is a call to action. It is 12 hours of Great Commission messaging intended to stir an awakening and is free of charge. The Send hopes to represent the beauty and diversity of the nation and to continue to spread a message of hope as we all do our part to see a true spiritual awakening and a broad scale activation of believers from every walk of life. Rock Island Riding CRANE BREWING PROVIDES RIDERS RESPITE AND REFRESHMENT

ARTICLE BY JOHN BEAUDOIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HONDO PEARCY

H OW TO | FOOD + BEVERAGE

CRANE BREWING

Biking and brews have been a perfect match since cyclists started navigating the state of Iowa some 50 years ago in the annual RAGBRAI event. Here in Jackson County, the trek is a little shorter, but with the extension of the Rock Island Trail stretching to the Sports Complex - and directly past Crane Brewing - the owners and beer enthusiasts are taking full advantage. Michael Crane and Christopher Meyers cut their barley-soaked teeth on the home-brew circuit before opening Crane Brewing. Members of the Kansas City Bier Meisters brew club, the duo met in 2013 and spent time doing charity events as home brewers before officially brewing their first batch in September of 2015. Meyers said they chose Raytown since Michael Crane knew the location well (it was a business of his that had gone under). And the rest is a bubbly history. What began as a distribution brewery without a taproom grew to one with a small bottling line, then canning line and eventually a hopping joint in Raytown with a full tap rotation and Harp Barbecue on site. Crane is known for its sours and wild fermented ales. Maybe, Meyers noted, a little too well known for them.“People say, ‘Crane Brewing, oh that’s the sour brewery,’” Christopher noted, saying they worked to broaden their selection over the last few years,

especially with the arrival of the Rock Island Trail. “A good thing that came from the pandemic was more styles and lagers.” And while they are changing with the scenery and palates of traditional and craft beer drinkers alike, their best-seller is one of the originals, the Tea Weiss - a “spritzy, sour wheat beer.” Along with broader selections, Crane is known for its unique brew monikers, like Odd Bird (a lager) and Thundergong, an American Pale. “With the trail comes access to a lot of new faces and a lot of new visitors, and not all of them are into craft beers,” Meyers said. “Odd Bird or Thundergong are good gateway beers for those new to craft beer.” True to form, Crane Brewing also recently added Rock Island Coffee inside the brewery, which caters to the earlier biking crowd. “It’s definitely seasonal, but we love having this Rock Island Trail extension here,” he said. “The bikers know when they can get out and use the nice weather to their advantage. We’ve never had walking or driving traffic down that road so now we have trail traffic.” And those cyclists have embraced the brewery on the route. When Crane Brewing introduced 'beer slushies' to their rotation, a biking group soon followed named, of course, ‘Team Slushie.’ “On a nice evening you look out from the taproom and you see bikers flying by. It’s very cool.” CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L E E S S UM M I T

As a Lee’s Summit native himself Christopher graduated from Lee’s Summit West in 2008 - he said he loves seeing how the trail connects the communities. “I would not hate it at all if KC became a mega trail city,” he noted.

Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Georges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville. When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated draws—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with

44

several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.” Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds.

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”
