Ranking your goals: A smart move You may have several financial goals. But can you reach them all? You can improve your chances if you rank your goals by their importance in your life – and then create appropriate strategies to help meet them.

For example, making sure you don’t outlive your resources is a “must have” goal. You can’t compromise on this goal, so you’ll need to balance your growth objective with your comfort with risk. And when you’re retired, you’ll need to follow an appropriate withdrawal strategy. But you’ll have other goals, which could be called “nice to have.” You might want to buy a vacation home someday, but if you fall short of this goal, you could find an alternative, such as just renting a place for a few weeks a year. For this goal, you may be able to take a more flexible investment approach. Along the way, you’ll want to monitor your progress toward all your goals. If you think you’re falling short, you might need to adjust your strategy.

In any case, think carefully about which goals are most important to you. It’s an important first step on the road to success.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

Fresh Starts and Firsts

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Laura Paszkiewicz | laura@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Flipping the calendar from December to January can be refreshing. For many, it signifies a fresh start, new opportunities, and a clean slate of sorts. A new year promises hope, and hope is precious. I find myself in that position of hope this year, with a fresh start and new opportunities. I’m elated and honored to be writing my first letter as the Editor of Lee’s Summit Lifestyle, as I’ve read and enjoyed the publication for many years. For me, it’s always evoked a sense of community and camaraderie, and my hope is to maintain that tradition moving forward. With the magazine working on some new branding as part of its affiliation with the City Lifestyle group, it’s an exciting time to join the team. Settling into this new role is a bit of a shift professionally, although my background as a teacher and education administrator carries with it much experience in building relationships. Being able to find and feature all that’s good in Lee’s Summit is something I very much look forward to; our community has much to celebrate! There are also shifts in my personal life, as for the first time since becoming a parent neither of my children will be living at home; two weddings in ten months makes for a lot of life change. It’s a beautiful thing to watch them become independent young adults forging their own paths, but it’s also a bit bittersweet. It truly does seem like just yesterday we were juggling carpooling for multiple club sports, doing homework in the car and grabbing yet another fast food dinner along the way. While I have some trepidation about navigating so many ‘firsts’, I believe in lifelong learning and I look forward to growing. I’m sure I’ll make a few blunders along the way, but the benefit of maturity is being able to own my errors and view obstacles as opportunities; those with whom I used to work will chuckle that I was able to work the word ‘opportunities’ into this first letter. So whatever ‘firsts’ you’re facing, know that you’re not alone. Find your people, embrace your imperfections, and enjoy the journey. For there is hope, and hope is precious.

Preparing For Your Child’s 4-Year Checkup Your child will be ready to go to school at ages four and five, an exciting and often nervous time for both you and your child. Your child is learning new colors, increasing their vocabulary, and may now be able to count from one to five. As you prepare for that first day of Kindergarten, think ahead to your child’s next well visit. What to expect at your visit: • Your provider will measure your child’s weight and height to ensure they are developing at a healthy pace. • Your child’s hearing will be screened using headphones to play sounds while monitoring your child’s response to various frequencies. • Your provider will perform a thorough eye exam to monitor for conditions and changes to vision health. • We will check your child’s immunizations record and give them any shots required before your child starts school. These shots may include DTaP, polio, MMR, and chicken pox vaccines. • If your child has any risk factors, your provider may test for tuberculosis. • Your provider will discuss any new health and safety

concerns with you and your child. • We’ll discuss your child’s growth, temperament, and behavior, offering support and tips for promoting healthy development. We’ll also talk to your child about what books, games, and activities they enjoy during your visit. Your child may display an active imagination at this stage and improved language skills. Questions the doctor may ask: • How’s the toilet training going? At 4, most children are potty trained or almost there, although bed-wetting is still pretty common. • Have you had a personal safety talk? The doctor may ask your child what her parents’ names are and if she knows which body parts are private. They may ask if you’ve had any talks about stranger safety and what to do if she gets lost. Your provider can answer any questions you may have about preparing for school, safety matters, nutrition, bed-wetting and any other concerns you may have. Call our office to schedule your appointment today.

A Legacy of Love FROM HEARTBREAK TO HOPE - ONE COUPLE’S JOURNEY TO HEALING

The beginning of a new year always brings renewal and hope for better days ahead. Several years ago, Drs. Alex and Lauren Nelson’s world was turned upside down when their young daughter, Harper Mitzi-Lou, was diagnosed with a condition known as a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Despite receiving the best care available, the prognosis was not what they had hoped for.

ARTICLE BY ALAN GOFORTH PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

14

I NSP IR E D BY | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

“Ultimately, we were told Harper would never walk, talk or swim, and that she would be hooked up to machines throughout her life and be in and out of the hospital,” Lauren said. “We were faced with a decision that no parent wants or should face and had to decide quality or quantity. She passed 51 days after being born.” Yet out of that tragedy, the Nelsons started a medical practice that has brought hope and healing to others facing medical challenges of their own. “We named the company HML Chiropractic and Functional Care after her,” Lauren said. “We want to do everything in her honor and lead by example, choosing to move beyond survival mode and show it is possible to grieve and live. Einstein once said, `The most important decision we make is whether we live in a friendly or hostile universe.’ The universe that `took’ Harper is the same universe that gave us her.” The Nelsons know exactly what patients and their families are feeling. “We understand what it is like to watch your child struggle and feel helpless,” she said.“Each family is different, but the core of it is to meet them where they are and improve their quality of life. We are blessed to say that we have many profound success stories with children. Non-verbal children on the spectrum are now talking, and children who were not walking are walking.” Because of their medical expertise, the Nelsons are able not only to empathize with patients but also help maximize their quality of life. “At HML, we use not only functional medicine; we use functional neurology as well as chiropractic to help people with chronic health problems,” Alex said. “Chiropractic is the most powerful thing we can do for our patients. We adjust the joints of the spine and body that do not move enough. We do this because the biggest input into the brain is what the joints of the spine and body are doing. If they don’t move well, this stresses out the brain, causes muscle spasms and joint inflammation, and contributes to pain. And increased stress on the brain means increased cortisol (the stress hormone), which is the last thing anyone nowadays needs.” Lee’s Summit, with its rapid growth and family friendly atmosphere, turned out to be the ideal location for their practice.

“We love Lee’s Summit,” Lauren said. “We have lived here as a family since 2015. It is the best community in Kansas City in our minds. There are a lot of great practitioners doing great work out there. We all have our specialties, and ours is chronic neurological disorders, especially kids, and we are very blessed to be able to deliver these services that no one else does.” HML treats a wide range of medical conditions, not simply those traditionally associated with chiropractic care. One of the most important steps in the healing process is listening to patients during the initial, complimentary consultation. “We sit down, get to know each other, see what has been done, what hasn’t been done, what’s worked and what hasn’t worked,” she said. “What are your goals for yourself or your child? We then send the parents or patients home with a packet of paper work going over the patient’s health and history, 0- to 10 and A to Z. After they turn that in, myself and Dr. Alex go over it to make sure we think we can help them.” HML even can help patients fulfill New Year’s resolutions about their health that often get discarded by late January. “If you are striving for a 2022 turnaround, break it up in segments or phases, as we say at HML,” Lauren said. “For example, if someone wants to lose weight and is starting to eat better but can’t move because they are in so much pain, we would fit into their health team very nicely by getting them feeling better to start exercising. Our specialty is making a mold for the patient, not making our patients fit a mold.” Alex and Lauren realize there is no one-sizefits-all approach to health care. HML treats each patient as an individual and tailors a treatment program to their specific needs, delivered with the empathy that their own experience has taught them. “We will do anything we can to help you or your loved one if you are wanting answers,” Lauren said. “We are constantly learning, researching and obtaining more knowledge to help more people. If we aren’t the answer, we will find the person who is.“ More information is available at www.hmlfunctionalcare.com or (816) 768-6000.

OPTIONS ABOUND FOR PRACTICING YOGA IN LEE’S SUMMIT ARTICLE BY JOHN BEAUDOIN

Whether you have no clue what namaste means or you’ve been a yogi for decades, there are multiple options in our community for learning and practicing the art. A common thread among the successful yoga studio owners featured here is a commitment to helping others become better versions of themselves and a belief that yoga improves both physical and mental well-being.

“The thing that makes Megan’s Yoga Tribe different is community. Community of women cheering

supporting each other.”

Megan’s Yoga Tribe Megan Culbertson doesn’t just talk about the community of yoga. She lives it every day. Practicing yoga for more than 15 years, Culbertson opened Megan’s Yoga Tribe at the beginning of the pandemic. She launched her online studio July 1, 2020 and quickly grew to nine live classes over Zoom each week. “I needed to serve the yoga community during this worldwide pandemic,” Megan said. “The thing that makes Megan’s Yoga Tribe different is community. Community of women cheering each other, supporting each other. No judgment, no ego, no competition.” Fifteen years ago, Megan owned two brick-and-mortar shops, was “living on coffee, wine and burnout” and faced $1 million in business debt. She said she found her peace on the yoga mat. “It was the first space I could surrender and let go,” she said. “I sold my original businesses and pursued something that set my soul on fire. My goal is to help women create and live a life they love. And I believe that starts with loving themselves first. So they can show up a happier, healthier, abundant version of themselves.” MYT offers yoga, pilates and barre classes. Visit https://createandlivealifeyoulove.com/. The Zen Zone

The Zen Zone Ruthann Zentner has spent more than 30 years practicing and teaching yoga and fitness classes. In that time, she has taught over 10,000 hours and helped train 250 teachers. It’s clearly her passion. The Zen Zone has been in business in Lee’s Summit for 15 years, and Ruthann says her studio is all about making personal connections. “When you commit to a yoga studio, people start to feel better, and that goes out to the community and then out into the world,” she said. “Union and connection, that’s what yoga is about. A place to learn, a safe space.” As one of the earliest yoga studios in Lee’s Summit, Ruthann (a certified Registered-500 Yoga Teacher) and her instructors have had the opportunity to coach thousands of students. As the pandemic sent her classes to Zoom, Ruthann was forced to shut down, but only for five days. She kept the Zoom classes for students to still practice at home, but she highly encourages in-person yoga. “Practicing in a studio vs. practicing on your own or on Zoom, the differences are night and day,” she said. “And, partially because I am funny. Especially when I sing in class.” For more information, visit www.zenzoneyoga.com/.

“We want to keep our focus as pure as possible, not just teaching it, but a honed-in practice of doing things correctly and safely.”

Core Balance Yoga Leah Morgan’s business name says it all: Core Balance Yoga Center. It’s what she focuses on daily at her studio in Lee’s Summit. “Our focus, and our dedication, is to the practice of yoga,” she said. “We want to keep our focus as pure as possible, not just teaching it, but a honed-in practice of doing things correctly and safely.” In business 11 years, Leah started her career in radio and pharmaceutical sales before switching careers. ‘I always thought I had to do cardio or lift weights,” she began, “but after taking Yoga from several different places, I finally got what the fuss was about.” CBYC offers classes 7 days a week, as well as offering private sessions. “Everybody who comes in is made to feel comfortable. Amy Black

Core Wellness Yoga

Core Wellness Yoga Amy Black has seen it all in more than 20 years teaching yoga, but her philosophy hasn’t changed; yoga has a way of unraveling the knots in our minds. Amy has owned Core Wellness Yoga since 2011, following a calling after she began to practice the art herself. “I wasn’t one of those people who was hooked right away, but after the fourth class or so, I was leaving and realized I was feeling really good,” she recalls. “I could tell it was different from a regular fitness class.” Smaller classes and small-group/private yoga set her apart, she said. Those and her experience as a personal trainer gives her an edge; Amy has taught yoga to Sporting KC and William Jewell College athletes. “I think of yoga as not just exercise, but when we get our bodies open, calm and free, the mind follows suit,” she said. Fresh and Fun on the Farm SUSTAINABLY SOURCED FOOD POWERS DELICIOUS DINING

ARTICLE BY LAURA MAXWELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY KT MASCHLER AND BLAIR PAULAKOVICH

Successful businesses regularly reimagine themselves, and with its introduction of award-winning chef Chris Hall and farm-to-table dining events, Colonial Garden’s customers and guests can expect a delectable array of dining options as part of its most recent reimagining. From a quick bite for breakfast to a farm-to-table dining reservation, The Kitchen at Colonial Gardens is sure to please. The Kitchen is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. seven days a week, serving breakfast and lunch menus created by Chef Hall. Setting them apart from other eateries is their commitment to using regionally sourced foods; some fruit and produce is grown onsite at Colonial Farms; with their greenhouse they have extended season vegetable production and are able to harvest year-round. They have also established partnerships with a variety of local farmers, allowing them to be 90% regionally sourced. Grace Ames, Director of Agritourism at Colonial Gardens, says their ultimate goal is “to connect people with food in every capacity possible. We’ve committed to intentionally provide experiences from you-pick options in the summer, to purchasing in our market, to experiencing the flavor and nutrition of one of our farm-to-table dining experiences. We hope to encourage and support ecologically sound farming practices that promote sustainable and regenerative agriculture.” Those seeking unique experiences will want to make reservations for The Kitchen’s recently debuted farm-totable six-course wine and dine experience; dinners will be held monthly that feature fine dining in a casual atmosphere, and guests will enjoy A Bommarito wines selected to complement each course. Colonial Gardens will host private dinner options in the spring in its courtyard, and

plans are underway to offer wedding and special events packages catered by Chef Hall. “I’m very much looking forward to getting back to my personal roots, as well as the roots of where food originates. I grew up on a small family farm, so coming to Colonial Farms is like coming home, and I’m excited about the environment we have cultivated, with a commitment to almost 100% local food sourcing,” said Chef Hall. Prior to The Kitchen at Colonial Farms, Hall served as Executive Chef at a number of metropolitan Kansas City high-end hotels, including the Peppercorn Duck Club and the Intercontinental hotel, and his impressive vitae afforded him opportunities to cook for an array of celebrities and dignitaries including President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Michael and Janet Jackson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Paul McCartney, Jerry Seinfeld, Eminem, the Chiefs football team and Anthony Bourdain. Broken, Changed and Rearranged

Local Author Embraces the Journey that Leads to Publication of First Book ARTICLE BY JOHN BEAUDOIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUZANNE FRYER

34

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | L I F E + CULTURE

As a local business owner, there have been a lot of big days circled on Liesl Hays’ calendar in the last few years. However, the most recent was December 7, 2021; the day the fledgling author launched her new book Broken, Changed and Rearranged. Hays’ plans were already set for that Tuesday - she was going to march into the bookstore, proudly grab hold of the pages filled with her courageous words, and purchase it. “Absolutely,” she said, “I am going to go buy it and take a picture of it. I’ve already pre-ordered on Amazon, but I am going to a bookstore on December 7 and pick up the book. And buy it.” Hays owns the Historic Browning Guest House in downtown Lee’s Summit and while endeavoring to author her first book, she embraced a transformation some aspiring writers avoid - dramatically changing course while in the midst of writing. What started as a book to encourage successful leadership and human resources strategies evolved into a book that was equal parts vulnerable, terrifying and fulfilling, as Hays opened up to share her personal journey. “The initial writing felt forced,” Liesl said of her original concepts. “As I started to write, I realized I was writing about the wrong topic. It wasn’t the right book for me to write. I decided to let go of my ego and write the book I was meant to write, not the book I initially wanted to write.” When she did, Broken, Changed and Rearranged was born. Although initially uncomfortable, Hays committed to daily writing and embraced the stresses and stumbling blocks authors face. “I had a lot of anxious dreams about it before my copy arrived,” she said. “I dreamed I hadn’t written enough and my publisher had to add a lot of photos

to fill space. When it arrived, it was a huge relief. I realized this is something I had truly accomplished.” She didn’t accomplish producing the publication alone, though. As the content of the book shifted, Liesl needed to lean on her family, husband Harlen and children Mady and Ethan, for support, as well as veteran writer and friend Trisha Drape. They were there through her initial struggles and encouraged her when she felt discouraged. “I needed to process through the change in topic and focus with my husband. When I initially talked with him, I inwardly hoped he would say no. That would have given me the pass to not write about my experiences, but when I explained that I thought it might be helpful to others to read about my journey, he was totally supportive. After that, I started trying to storyboard it out and became very frustrated,” Liesl said. “But my friend Trisha said, ‘Stop overthinking it. Write the story, and we’ll figure out what order it all goes in. After that, it all started to fall into place.’” Drafts later, the end product wasn’t just a book; Liesl herself had been impacted by getting her story down on paper. “It finally felt right, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t terrified at sharing the story,” she said. “I was scared. I needed to work through it with my family. That wasn’t an easy conversation. I wanted to make sure my kids didn’t read my story in the book; they deserved to hear it from me before the book was published. I believe this book was meant to nurture healing in other people. My goal in writing it, for people going through crisis, is that they have someone they feel like can relate to.” Broken, Changed and Rearranged is available on Amazon and at Target, WalMart and other local bookstores.

building community ARTICLE BY ALAN GOFORTH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Living up to its name, Community Choice Pediatrics rebrands and thrives.

Community Choice Pediatrics

Although Lee’s Summit has experienced rapid growth in recent years, longtime residents agree it still feels more like a small town than a city. A strong sense of community is a hallmark of local schools, churches and businesses. So it’s no wonder the area’s oldest pediatrics practice chose the name Community Choice Pediatrics when it rebranded last fall. “It wasn’t easy to change the name, but we thought it was time to rebrand and felt like we had grown up with the community,” Chief Operating Officer Chad Fletcher said. “If the community hadn’t chosen us, we definitely would not be as successful as we are. The name just came together. “When you think about the growth of Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs, we have to continue to grow along with the community. With three locations, evening and weekend hours, and an automated system for fast and convenient check-ins, Community Choice is designed to meet the needs of today’s families.” The practice began in 1984 as Lee’s Summit Physicians Group and later included Blue Springs Pediatrics and Raintree Pediatrics. All three now carry the Community Choice name, and their physicians have served generations of parents and children. “It’s funny because some of our staff have been here 30-plus years and joke that they now have `grandpatients,’” he said. “The patients they saw back in the day had kids, and their kids now have kids. They continue to come back.“ Patients and their families come not just from eastern Jackson County but from as far away as Warrensburg to the east and Kansas suburbs to the west. Community Choice, which is affiliated with Children’s Mercy Hospital has a combined staff of 18 board-certified doctors, 10 certified nurse practitioners and 66 other healthcare professionals.

“One thing we are proud of is the longevity of our providers and staff,” Fletcher said. “It’s comforting for people to know that when they come in, they will see the same faces over and over again and that they will get the consistent, quality care they deserve.” As every parent knows, children don’t always get sick during traditional business hours. “We are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., have walk-in service for sick kids and are on-call on the weekends,” he said. “You can always get in touch with someone. Whatever you need from a pediatric office, we can do, and if you need further care, we can refer you to the right people.” Although providing a welcoming, comforting atmosphere is a must in any medical setting, it is especially important in pediatrics. Parents often are more anxious and stressed than their children are. “Our care starts with our front office,” Fletcher said. “We have a great front-office staff that is very friendly. We will have 400-plus kids come through our offices in a day, and we know they will get that first smile from our front office. It continues to roll to our nursing staff, which is fantastic. I can’t say enough about our nurses. And when it comes to our physicians and providers, they are there to deliver compassionate care. I see the compassionate care they give every day. Parents can come in upset and crying, but they leave reassured and feeling that they have a great relationship with their provider. We place ourselves in the shoes of our patients and parents as we mindfully listen, observe and examine.” As with every business, the pandemic has put that commitment to the test “We are proud that we were able to stay open,” he said. “Our board was reassuring that we still were going to be CONTINUED >

39

there for our patients and to educate parents. Our board was meeting almost every other day, trying to keep up with the latest information. Our staff went through a lot with all the changes we had to make, but they were there and worked through it. We kept moving forward.” The community focus is not confined to the walls of the practice. Staff members also work with Coldwater and other local organizations to help those who are less fortunate. As a new year begins, Fletcher encourages parents to be proactive about the health of their children. “The most important thing you can do is make sure children are updated on all of their vaccinations,” he said. “We

offer vaccines for both flu and COVID-19. Also, bring your children in and let your provider look them over to be sure no underlying circumstances are going on. Finally, after all we have been going through, as the new year begins, be thankful and enjoy your family.” For Fletcher and his associates, Community Choice Pediatrics represents more than just a new name. It’s an ongoing commitment to area families. “Our name says it all,” he said. “We are a community, and we know everybody has a choice. We hope we continue to be leaders and that Community Choice Pediatrics becomes your family’s pediatric group of choice.”

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 44

S ELF CA R E | FITNESS

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

46

S ELF CA R E | FITNESS

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
