WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PARK AND WHY? My wife, Becky, and I love going to the park! Whether it’s taking our grandkids to Legacy Park in Lee’s Summit, enjoying a baseball game at the ballpark (Kauffman Stadium, of course) or strolling around the park surrounding The Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, it’s hard to pick a “favorite.” If I had to choose, however, my choice would be Central Park in New York City. We try to make it there every year, usually with friends or family. Visiting there is always a treat even if we generally get lost!

My favorite park in the Lee’s Summit area is Hartman Park. We didn’t visit the park until the Rock Island Trail was completed and now it is one of our favorite outdoor activities. We took a walk on the trail recently and it was great to see people in the community being active. If you haven’t been able to check out the trail for a bike ride, walk, or run, I highly recommend it!

My favorite local park is Lake Jacomo. Since grade school and then throughout high school I’ve gone there, and still enjoy cruising the winding roads throughout every changing season. WHAT TOPS THE LIST OF PLACES YOU’VE TRAVELED? The most beautiful trip I’ve ever taken was to the Greek Island of Santorini. The vast crater left by one of the most significant volcanic eruptions in history, created magnificent, multi-colored cliffs soaring over 300 meters. The natural beauty, historic ruins and clear blue water on the beaches and view from the cliffs and down into the harbor make it a spectacular destination I’ll never forget. NOW THAT SPRING IS HERE, WHAT OUTDOOR ACTIVITY DO YOU ENJOY? I enjoy being outside, especially walking on the trails that are part of the Winterset community and Rock Island Trail in Lee’s Summit.

WHAT TOPS THE LIST OF PLACES YOU’VE TRAVELED? My wife’s grandparents grew up in Austria, so it had been a bucket list trip for a while. We ended up being able to travel there in September 2019 and spent a few days in Vienna and a few days with relatives that live in the same house that “Grammy” grew up in. Vienna was great, but we really loved breathing in the fresh air and meeting family in person that we had only heard about in the past. The hospitality and food will have a hard time being topped in the future. Prost!

Letter from the Editor SPRING SYMBOLIZES NEW BEGINNINGS TO ME EVEN MORE SO THAN THE NEW YEAR. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and after a long Midwest winter, the fresh, temperate air invites us to enjoy the outdoors. There is nothing better than opening up the windows on a nice day and letting the fresh air in or enjoying a patio on a warm spring night to usher in the season. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, the representation of new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world. I love spring.

One of my favorite childhood memories of spring involves preparing dozens of May Day baskets for neighbors. My sister and I loved to bring flowers to all of our neighbors, whether we knew them or not. Unbeknownst to my mother, we often cut flowers out of our neighbors’ yards to fill the baskets—homing in on the aromatic lilac bushes, peonies and the occasional tulip. At that young age, we didn’t realize that it wasn’t an acceptable thing to do, as we prepared huge bouquets of flowers that weren’t ours to cut and left them on doorsteps. Once my mother realized what we had been doing, she was mortified, but thankfully our sweet, elderly neighbor that got hit the hardest by our flower picking was well aware of our antics and let my mother know that she loved watching us create bouquets out of her flowers and then watching from the window as we delivered them door-to-door. Although I am sure her yard was not as pretty as it

IT IS DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE BEING A CHILD TAKEN FROM THE ONLY HOME YOU HAVE EVER KNOWN AND GOING TO LIVE WITH A NEW FAMILY, YET THAT IS THE REALITY FOR SO MANY CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE. To make these situations even more challenging, foster parents often do not have much notice before receiving a placement, and the kids generally come with few belongings. The possessions they do have are sometimes transported in trash bags because the child does not have a suitcase or suitable bag. One local organization hopes to encourage foster families in this situation by supporting them in various ways. Foster Kids KC was established about a year and a half ago by Whitney Eagleburger out of a passion to help foster families. With a mission of serving, encouraging and empowering foster youth and families in Kansas City, one of their primary projects is to provide placement kits to foster families. These placement kits include items such as pajamas, toiletries, hair products, bedsheets and more. The items are then put into a duffel bag and delivered to foster families ideally within 24 hours of a child being placed with the family.

Given so many stories of foster kids transporting their items in trash bags, Katie Welch, president of Foster Kids KC, feels strongly that a duffel bag is given to each child as a part of their kit. “It feels important to me to buy the duffel bag so they can have that dignity,” Welch says.
