Giving Tuesday-lasting benefits. The Tuesday after Thanksgiving has become known as Giving Tuesday, when people are encouraged to donate to charitable organizations. How can you maximize the effectiveness of your gifts – for the charity and for you? First, ensure a charity is legitimate,
with tax-exempt status. Also, do some research to determine if the charity is devoting most of its resources to its stated goal. An efficient charitable group will generally spend no more than 30% to 35% of its money on administrative costs.
Next, see if your employer will match
your charitable gift. Many companies match employees’ gifts on a dollar-for-dollar basis, and some will go even further.
Finally, think about how you want to make your gift.
If you give appreciated stocks, rather than cash, you may get a current tax deduction, assuming you itemize, and possibly avoid capital gains taxes you might incur in the future when you sell the stocks.
Giving Tuesday comes just once a year – but your charitable gifts can have lasting benefits.

The holiday season sneaks up on us so quickly. EVERY YEAR ABOUT THIS TIME I FIND MYSELF UNPACKING A BIG BAG OF MIXED EMOTIONS. On one hand, I am excited about the upcoming holiday season with warm comfortable memories of the time in my life when I could always count on seeing the entire family, eat a big traditional meal and relax around the tv. Now that our children are older and our family has grown smaller with the loss of family,

we struggle to hold on to traditions for dinner and who will be attending. We find ourselves creating and recreating new experiences for the holidays. Our children relish in the memories of grandma and grandpa’s house, food, and traditions that never changed for their entire childhood just as I do. Yet we rarely have a year without new changes. It seems as though it is becoming harder to maintain traditions of any kind. Maybe it is just the stage of life we are in or possibly it is a reflection of the current times. Our children have taught us how to allow gratitude to remain at the forefront of our minds through the constant changes and non-traditional holidays. We have adapted because we know that change is inevitable. We have become more flexible in adding gluten-free, vegan, non-dairy, and nut-free ingredients to our traditional holiday meals and learning how to play games instead of watching tv. Thanksgiving dinners don't have kids running around, babies to place into highchairs, or a rush to feed everyone in a fast line to make sure the meal stays warm. It looks a little different around the table but the special feeling of celebrating the season of gratitude is still there.

choose to do it. I am sure that we will experience another phase in which we experience the kids and babies at the Thanksgiving table once again. Until then we are looking forward to what we have in front of us, right now. For that, we are extremely grateful. This month, I hope your home is filled with the aroma of freshly baked pies, the sounds of laughter around the table, and the feeling of gratitude in your hearts.

How to Stay Healthy through Cold and Flu Season November is the perfect time of year. The air is cool, the holidays are coming, you’ll soon be with friends and family… and everyone is getting sick. It’s just what happens in late fall. At least that’s what we’re led to believe. But could you and your family stay healthy during cold and flu season (not to mention COVID-19)? One of the best ways to not get sick this year is, of course, to not be around others who are sick. But with work and school in full swing, in addition to holiday get-togethers, that can be a little challenging. Here are some of the next-best things you can do to stay healthy as we head into the holidays. Wash Your Hands We touch a lot of things during the day, and kids definitely touch a lot of things that other kids have touched. Getting everyone in the habit of washing your hands for 20 seconds before and after meals, after blowing your nose, and before you touch your face will go a long way in helping to keep colds and flus at bay. Use Hand Sanitizer There are some times when washing your hands just isn’t feasible, namely when you’re out and about. Keep alcoholbased hand sanitizer in the car, diaper bag, and your purse to help your family stay healthy. For school-aged kids, put a small bottle of sanitizer in their backpack.
Don’t Touch Your Face (Unless You’re Covering a Sneeze or Cough) Kids are notorious for touching their faces—a lot. Starting them early with a habit of not touching their faces can be hard, but gentle reminders are definitely helpful. Also, be sure that you’re aware of touching your own face, as you’re the best role model for good behavior. Keep It Clean: Disinfect High-touch Areas High-touch areas can hold on to germs, and since everyone— healthy and sick alike—touches them, they should be cleaned regularly. These areas include, at a minimum, doorknobs, faucets, and toys. If your children use your mobile devices or hold on to your keys, add those to the mix as well. Update Your Vaccines One of the very best ways to stay healthy during cold and flu season is by keeping your vaccinations up to date. These include the standard childhood vaccines, as well as an annual flu shot and the COVID-19 shot. Approval for children as young as six is expected for the COVID-19 vaccine this fall, and infants from six months are eligible for the flu shot. If you haven’t yet updated your children’s vaccines, call our office to schedule your appointment.
We’re Ready! A safe and effective vaccine to protect our 12+ patients is here now!

“Our son, Seth, has had many major developmental delays including severe autistic symptoms and was non-verbal. We have found that these therapies have focused at the root of the problem and progressed through each developmental stage to improve his function, instead of just treating symptoms. Today, Seth is able to communicate his needs verbally, has finished 1st grade, reads aloud and has empathy and expression that he didn’t previously show. We are very pleased and thankful for HML Functional Care and Dr Alex’ passion for kiddos like our Seth. We can’t say enough about them.” Chiropractic Care | Interactive Metronome Neurosage Functional Neurology and Functional Medicine Therapeutic Cold Laser | Neurodevelopmental Checkups

If pinecones were gathered on a damp day, it might take longer. Keep a close eye and pull them out when the house smells of pine trees and your pinecones go from a matte to a glossy finish. To use, simply place it around the table or add it to a bowl along with cinnamon sticks as a centerpiece. HOSTING HACK Having a dessert already placed on each guest's plate creates an extra special touch to the tablescape (and less work for the host when guests arrive). Here I’ve used my French Macarons but any single-serve dessert will do the trick. If you are interested in painting your own macarons, you can find instructions on Instagram @silvertoothhome. Happy Gatherings!

HOMETOWN HERO
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
PUT SIMPLY, ERIC THOGERSON IS A LICENSED GENERAL CONTRACTOR FOCUSING ON WOOD AND METAL FRAMING AS WELL AS LANDSCAPING DESIGN AND INSTALLATION. Yet the work ethic and values he wants his company to reflect have developed in him over the course of his life. We caught up with the chief executive officer of Lee’s Summit’s Allcat Construction and asked him to share his story. Q: WHEN AND WHY DID YOU OPEN ALLCAT CONSTRUCTION? A: After owning a conglomeration of businesses I decided to take a more focused approach, and I opened Allcat Construction in January 2020. I have a background and experience in construction and enjoy working in the field. It is a pleasure to watch projects go from the infancy stage to final construction. We have experienced several pivots since Allcat’s inception between the pandemic, the work force changing, and the housing boom, so we refocused in 2021 to work more with local builders.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BEN HIGGINS TALKS COFFEE, HOPE & HUMANITY, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THANKFUL
Living a Purposeful Life
PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR BEING LEAD #20 IN THE BACHELOR, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO BEN HIGGINS THAN BEING ONE OF AMERICA’S REALITY TV SWEETHEARTS, SUCH AS HIS DEEP PASSION FOR MAKING MOVES TO “MULTIPLY GOOD IN THE WORLD.” PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 40
Since his time on The Bachelor, Ben has taken the opportunity to use his fame to create not one, but two inspiring podcasts, publish a successful autobiography, while also elevating awareness of his “for-purpose” Generous Coffee brand. We sat down with him (virtually) to reflect on all that he has accomplished in this season of “thankfulness.”

almost_famouspodcast.
BH: The idea came in July of 2017 and we launched in January of 2018. When the show [The Bachelor] happened, our fundraising increased 500%, but we also knew that it probably wasn’t going to last. We asked ourselves how we can make this more sustainable, and we came up with the idea that we could start a for-profit business and call ourselves “for-purpose.” We donate 100% of our profits to non-profits.

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | November 2021
FOOD FOSTERS CONNECTION. Lauren Lane, a Johnson County culinary guru, has a passion for teaching others to cook and to connect by entertaining and sharing a meal with one another. Through her classes and online blog, she encourages friends and strangers to cook more often, entertain more easily and create memorable moments around the dinner table. “I love to make things look beautiful but unveil how simple it can be,” Lane explains. HERE ARE A FEW OF LAUREN’S TIPS FOR HOSTING AN EFFORTLESS GATHERING: + Cook seasonally—it ensures the ingredients you use are in their prime. + Choose recipes that can be made in advance. In my recipe development, I share just how much can be made in advance. + Not everything needs to be made from scratch. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many dishes. + If you don’t bake like me, buy your desserts and put them on a pretty platter. Sometimes I sprinkle with confectioner sugar to make them look extra special. + Have a glass of wine or a signature cocktail that you offer to everyone who enters your home. + Create a mood by turning on music, turning down the lights and lighting candles. LAUREN’S TIPS FOR CREATING AN EASY AND BEAUTIFUL TABLESCAPE + It’s always a great idea to bring the outdoors in to your table, and it often can be found in your own yard. Use greenery from your yard, branches from your trees, flowers or pine cones. + Use fruit as table decor because it can be so beautiful, and it can also be used after the event to make pies or smoothies. + Votive candles create a nice ambiance especially when cozied up in the greenery. + Cloth napkins always make the table special. (If you don’t want to iron them, just tie a little twine around them and no one will notice.) CONTINUED >
