GET TO KNOW YOUR l ocal ADVISORS MATTHEW SIBBING

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PET AS A CHILD? Throughout my childhood my family had dogs and birds as pets. My pups were always so much fun to play and get into mischief with, so they were always top pet hands down. Probably my favorite was our beagle named Bill whose favorite activity was borrowing items from our neighbors’ yards and garages and bringing them back to our house.

KIDS GO BACK TO SCHOOL AT THE END OF THE MONTH. DO YOU HAVE ANY VACATION PLANS BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS? My family will be traveling to Los Cabos, Mexico and staying at an all-inclusive resort during the first week of August. This will be our kids’ first time going to Mexico, so they are really excited! With our family’s hectic schedule, we are looking forward to having all five of us together for some relaxation, family dinners and activities we can do together.

NOW THAT SUMMER IS COMING TO A CLOSE, WHAT SPECIAL MEMORIES DID YOU MAKE? This has been a busy summer, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. My eldest daughter Madison and I traveled to Saginaw, MI for her regional soccer championships and had a wonderful time. My son Brady’s baseball team were undefeated and won their league championship. I helped coach, and he and I had some great times together. We will be traveling to Denver, CO for my daughter Kylie’s basketball tournament at the end of July, which we are doing with the entire family, and hope to create more great memories.

SCOTT WALL

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST- DOGS, CATS, OR A DIFFERENT PET, AND WHY? I think it’s pretty amazing to see how much love and affection all pets provide to people of all ages. That said, dogs would be my favorite pet. I was attacked by a cat when I was a kid, so I’ve always been a bit skittish around cats.

WE CERTAINLY GET ALL FOUR SEASONS HERE IN THE MIDWEST. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE? I remember saying this past winter that I wouldn’t complain when it’s over 90 degrees and humid, so I’m staying true to my commitment with that! I actually enjoy the summer heat, but my overall favorite season is the fall as I think September and October are two of the best months of the year in the area. The only thing I don’t like about the fall is that winter is coming.

NOW THAT SUMMER IS COMING TO A CLOSE, WHAT SPECIAL MEMORIES DID YOU MAKE? We just got back from an amazing trip to the Mediterranean and made some life-long memories. Now both our boys are gearing up to start their Freshman years - one in college and one in high school. All those “time flies” clichés are totally true, but we are excited about the next chapters and making more memories.

MATT KNEHANS

NOW THAT SUMMER IS COMING TO A CLOSE, WHAT SPECIAL MEMORIES DID YOU MAKE? Lauren, our eldest, graduated from Lee’s Summit West High School, and we held a party in her honor. We had a special treat at her party- a whole hog roast and family and friends traveled in from coast-to-coast to celebrate her rite of passage. We were blessed with pleasant weather, and fun was had by all!

KIDS GO BACK TO SCHOOL AT THE END OF THE MONTH. DO YOU HAVE ANY VACATION PLANS BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR STARTS? Coming from a small town, I don’t remember being as busy as my children seem to be- it sure made summer seem short. We’ve planned to take a family hiatus on the beach prior to school starting. We’re preparing for Lauren to start college, and Matt and Sophia for fall sports.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PET AS A CHILD/ADULT? Over 10 years ago my wife and children talked me into getting a family dog. We ended up choosing a Portuguese water dog we named Sasha. Of all the pets that have been in my life, Sasha is at the top of my list. She was eager to please, defender of the pack, and playful and loyal.

BEFORE HAVING KIDS OF MY OWN, I THOUGHT PARENTING WAS GOING TO BE A PIECE OF CAKE. As the second oldest of ten kids, a classroom teacher, and former nanny, I had years of experience with children—and I knew I was good with kids. I was sure that my “expertise” was going to make parenting seamless. And then I had my first child. I think God knew I needed to be humbled, or I would have probably been one of those parents who knew everything. My first came into the world screaming and colicky and didn’t stop screaming for months. He has always been my lively one— full of endless energy, excitement and curiosity, and while that could be challenging at times in his younger years, it was also a rich gift, and that personality has been an amazing asset for him as a teenager. (For those of you who have hyperactive toddlers—I promise you that energy does turn into a huge benefit.) My other three were much more subdued, but they all, of course, have been drastically different from the next, encompassing both unique gifts and challenges.

Welcome Home, Baby PHOTOGRAPHY ANDREA NIGH PHOTOGRAPHY

NURSERIES ARE UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE SWEETEST SPACES TO DREAM UP. They are also such an important part of the nesting process for expecting parents. Lanie Draper and the design team at Rooted KC were thrilled when their client let them surprise them with this sweet space as they focused on other ways to prepare for their baby boy’s arrival. With almost unlimited creative freedom, their client’s only request was an earthy color palette and a room that would grow with their child. 20

OPEN HOUSE

(CON TI N U ED)

"Before we went crazy in design land, we laid out the room to ensure our ideas for the layout would be functional as the roofline interfered with all but one of the walls," Draper explains. "I love minor trials like this because these little quirks always result in a charming nook that make a space even more adorable." Most nurseries are designed with the crib as the center focus. Instead, they created heavy drama around the tallest wall in the room with a hand painted buffalo check wall. "We love how this focal point elongated the room and made you forget about the shorter ceilings," Draper says. With the addition of paint, this once beige box quickly transformed into a nursery full of personality. From there, they began layering green, gold and wood accents. A favorite in this nursery are the gold swing arm sconces above the nightstands. When the little guy outgrows his crib, a full-size bed will fit perfectly inside the nightstands. The last piece or decor they found was the cute little bear art, and they instantly knew it would be the sweetest addition to this space. At the nursery reveal, their clients went gaga over the bear because one of the names they were considering and ultimately chose was the name Barrett for him. "We hope you find our nursery and design tips inspirational as you prepare to create a truly unique and adorable space of your own."

22

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2019

DESIGNER TIPS: Babies might be small, but they sure do require a lot of stuff. Conceal the every day clutter with cute baskets. We opted for hung baskets to keep those sweet tiny hands from pulling everything back out.

Creating an eye-catching nursery can have an impact on your pocket book, so it’s important to create a space they can grow into. Swap the crib for a big kid bed and adjust a few little accessories and you’re good to go!

Space plan ahead of time to make the most of cozy corners. Sometimes unexpected placement of furniture creates the most unique room.

THIS ADORABLE SHIFFON, A HYBRID OF A SHIH-TZU AND BRUSSELS GRIFFON, IS AT HOME ON BROADWAY, HAS TRAVELED WITH HIS “MOM,” JENNIFER BALAGNA, TO TWO COUNTRIES (CANADA TWICE AND MEXICO) IN ADDITION TO 17 STATES. He has been to the Hamptons, up and down the east coast, Florida, California and Colorado 10 times, just to name a few. “He is the best travel buddy, riding in this super chic carrier that sits below my seat,” Balagna says. “He’s been traveling since he was a pup, and it was important to me to acclimate him to traveling on all different types of modes, including trains, the subway, taxis, airplanes and more.” He has schmoozed with Dolly Parton, who would scoop him up from the dressing room and take him out to the house to watch during “9 to 5.” Mr. Henry sat through many rehearsals with two-time Tony Award-winning Andy Blankenbuhler. He also became great friends with Allison Jenney’s dog, Addie. Balagna, who has acted in all of these productions, gave her cast the challenge of naming her new 8-week-old puppy. The final four were Oscar, Valentino, Calvin and Hank Aaron.

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2019

“I surprised them all when I named him Mr. Henry!” she says. Mr. Henry was born on April Fools Day in Kansas City, and Balagna adopted him when she was on tour with “Wicked.” She now owns Kansas City Dance Company in Lee’s Summit and says no matter if students are having a bad or good day, this little studio mascot is always there with a snuggle and cuddle on the couch. A Lee’s Summit native, she graduated from LSHS in 2001, then headed to New York, explaining that on her second day of college at Fordham University, 9/11 happened. She volunteered at the World Trade Center in the aftermath. She earned her B.S. in economics, choosing this degree because as the daughter of Phyllis Balagna, longtime owner of Steppin’ Out the Studio in Lee’s Summit, it was critical for her to work in the dance industry. “I wanted to follow in her footsteps,” she says. She did pave her own way, living in NYC for 14 years and performing as a professional dancer on Broadway and in the touring company as the Dance Captain of “Wicked the Musical” and also an original cast member of the Broadway musical “9 to 5” with Dolly Parton where she sang on the cast album. She also toured with New York City Dance Alliance as a demonstrator, performed in multiple contemporary companies, and has performed in gigs for companies including Tupperware, Saratoga Springs Water and the American Dental Association. Her favorite performance memory was dancing as Betty White’s body double for “Saturday Night Live.” She now loves to teach and pass on her knowledge and love for dance and has workshopped for multiple shows, including “In the Heights,” “Annie Revival,” “the Apple Tree Revival,” “Cats Revival,” and “9 to 5.” Mr. Henry has been by her side through it all. “My favorite activity that Mr. Henry and I do is go to Bar K in the River Market and just hang out with our friends and watch him play with the other dogs. He is a pretty lazy, borderline lethargic dog, but when he gets to the dog park he turns into a running machine,” she says. “Chasing other dogs is his favorite 'sport' to play. The bigger the dog, the better as his first dog friend that he adored when he was

GIVING BACK

THE ELLERMAN TEAM AT REECENICHOLS IS COMMITTED TO GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES

ARTICLE ALAN GOFORTH 36

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | August 2019

THE KANSAS CITY REGION IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN THE NATION. However, as in any city, it also is home to victims of abuse who need help to put their lives back together. The Rob Ellerman Team at ReeceNichols in Lee’s Summit is proud to support Hope Haven of Cass County while providing real estate solutions to hundreds of residents each year. Hope Haven’s mission is to provide safe shelter, concentrated supportive services, community resources and education to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The team and its partners raised $130,000 for the organization at its seventh annual golf tournament, which was held in late May at Drumm Farm Golf Course in Independence. It plans to use the funds to begin construction of a much-needed new facility. “Hope Haven is such a great organization, and we are thrilled to be able to support their next chapter of growth,” team leader Rob Ellerman says. “The generosity from our participants was truly remarkable.” Once again, Summit Homes was a major sponsor of the fundraiser. Other members of the real estate community, along with construction trade partners and community leaders, also participated. Giving back to the community has been a core value for Ellerman since he began his real estate career in 1995. In 2018 alone, the Ellerman Team and its clients donated more than $264,000 to a who’s who of leading charities, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Harvesters, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, Drumm Farm Center for Children, Royals Charities, National Cancer Foundation, United Way, Run for Little Hearts, Coldwater Fostering Care, American Lung Association, Special Olympics Missouri, Lee’s Summit Cares, the Ellerman Team scholarship fund and local schools.

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

Ellerman’s passion to give back and his commitment to his clients has fueled his team’s remarkable growth. In just over two decades, the team has grown to more than 70 Realtors, who helped nearly 1,200 families buy or sell homes in 2018. The Ellerman Team consistently ranks near the top of local and regional sales charts and in January opened a new office in Springfield. “Our goal is to become your complete real estate resource, whether buying, selling or even after the transaction is closed,” Ellerman says. “We have worked to form great partnerships with other vendors, builders, mortgage companies, handymen and so many more, so we can provide a smooth ride. Everything we do reflects our founding ideals–trust, communication and honesty.” And, of course, generosity. The team already is looking forward to the 2020 golf tournament, which again will be played at Drumm Farm in May. Meanwhile, it is committed to helping as many clients and charitable organizations as it can. Buyers and sellers know that when they work with the Ellerman Team, they ultimately are helping make the community a better place to live. “We’re proud to support Hope Haven as they care for victims of domestic violence in Kansas City,” he says. “This is just one more way to raise awareness and get the community involved.” Information about Hope Haven is available at www.hopehavenofcasscounty.org. Has the judge made up their mind? In divorce or family law matters, pre-trial conferences, settlement conferences and other preliminary court dates often take place. These court appearances can sometimes take place in open court. In other instances, they can take place in chambers with only the attorneys present. In many of these court appearances, the attorneys in the case tell the judge their client’s versions of the facts of the case. They also might tell the court what it is their client wants. The hope on the part of the attorneys and the parties is often to have the judge weigh in terms of what they think. Many then hope that this can lead to a settlement of some kind. Some parties even take this a step further. They worry when the judge gives some preliminary thoughts or opinions that the judge has already made up their mind.

Many feel as if they might not have much of a choice but to settle after hearing the judge’s input. While parties certainly want to hear the preliminary thoughts of the judge carefully in terms of weighing their options, the truth is that a family court judge is not to definitively make up their mind until they have heard the evidence. While a judge might hear arguments and take in some information at these court appearances, evidence is formally admitted at a trial or evidentiary hearing. At a trial or evidentiary hearing, witnesses can testify. Evidence can also be admitted, like documentary, photographic, video or other electronic evidence. Expert witnesses can also give opinion testimony and reports. At the conclusion of the evidence, this is when a judge is only supposed to

make up their mind and enter a judgment. Thus, while it feels at a preliminary court appearance that a judge has already made up their mind, parties do have a due process right to a hearing in the family court. Sometimes, what a judge says in a court appearance is not always what they do after they have heard all the evidence. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, mediation, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Jones emphasizes, “Time goes fast, so it is important to capture life as you’re going through it.” For most of us, coordinating the outfits is the most daunting task of taking a family photo. Jones has always been drawn to color and believes that a little pop of color can make the photos more dynamic. “When deciding on a color palette for a family shoot, I suggest finding something that you are drawn to for one person and then base the rest off of that,” she explains. “Starting with one outfit and then slowly building off of that makes the task of coordinating outfits less overwhelming.”

location tips: Steer away from shooting on train tracks. They are privately owned, and it is illegal to be on them. If an urban setting is desired, decide if you prefer more of a natural urban or upscale urban. For upscale urban, the plaza is a great choice. The West Bottoms and the Crossroads will provide a more edgy urban background. Graffiti walls are great, too. For a natural setting, one of the many local parks, lakes or nature trails make the perfect backdrop.

tips for picking colors: For an urban or industrial setting, bright colors are a great choice. For a nature background, steer away from wearing greens or colors that will reflect the grass in skin tones. Reds can also really play with a person’s skin tone, so red is best for pants rather than shirts.
