OUR SEPTEMBER ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO FASHION AND STYLE. While working

CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS

on this issue, I couldn’t help reflect on my own love of fashion and clothing and how

much it has morphed over the years. I love looking back at old photos and seeing the fashion trends of the day so heavily reflected. It brings back a flood of memories and often a lot of laughs about what I thought looked great. I grew up predominantly in the ‘80s and ‘90s where fashion trends were both distinct and diverse. Big hair, perms, blue eye shadow, shoulder pads, leg warmers, parachute pants, jelly shoes, stone washed tight rolled jeans and Aqua Net dominated the ‘80s, while overalls, Birkenstocks, Doc Martens, plaids, and textures such as corduroy, velour, and velvet distinguished the ‘90s looks. Each decade had its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades later, the originality of each look that is reflected often times is connected to the culture and music of the day. One of my favorite memories tied to clothing was when my Aunt Barbara came in town from Georgia and took me to the Laura Ashley store on the Plaza to buy my confirmation dress. Being one of 10 children, we didn’t frequent expensive stores, so it was extra special when we got something nice. She let me pick out any dress I wanted and had no

stipulations. The price didn’t matter and neither did the style. That blue floral dress in all its glory had an overly large bow in the back and big puffy sleeves with shoulder pads and was the best outfit I had owned up to that point in my 12 years of life.

LAYOUT DESIGNERS

That memory with my sweet aunt was something that I have always treasured. As common as a shopping trip for our kids can be now, back then it was not (at least for me), and I felt so special to have that one-on-one time with my aunt on the Plaza shopping for such a special occasion. In this month’s issue, I wanted to share with you some local entrepreneurs in the Kansas City fashion and garment scene, and as you will discover in the following pages, Kansas City is becoming more of a hub for garment production and manufacturing. We also

MADE LEATHER TOTE THAT WOULD GO THE DISTANCE. This was before the mass-marketing of simple, high-quality leather bags from Madewell, ABLE and Cuyana. What Bordner found was a market full of loud, logo-emblazoned purses that So the 2005 graduate of Lee’s Summit High School set out to make her own. When she enrolled in a class at Tandy Leather in Independence, she became immersed in a creative process that she could get lost in for hours, and that appealed to her because her creations would stand the test of time. She made herself the bag she wanted, and then she started making them for other people, too. “I love the idea that leather is a medium that can outlive someone,” Bordner says. “You puncture a hole in it and it’s going to be there forever — it’s not like you can rip out a seam.” Bordner describes herself as a creative with a little bit of an imposter syndrome before she hit on her current business, EB. She wasn’t a painter or an illustrator. At the age of 14, her bags made of tea towels unraveled at the seams. In her early 20’s she started a donut business and perfume business. It turned out that donuts were too perishable and perfume too messy. Bordner delved into leatherwork as she finished up her MBA, and she was able to immediately put her knowledge into practice, launching EB Leatherworks in the fall of 2012. She started out hand-sewing all her own pieces and selling them online and at local popups like Boulevardia and Strawberry Swing, but the demand became too great. Now, she designs all the pieces locally, sourcing hides for her one-of-a-kind pieces in Kansas City or LA. She works with one local Kansas City seamstress who produces all the pieces on an industrial leather sewing machine.

EB’s bestselling pieces – a crossbody, a short mini clutch and a bracelet bag – can now be found at her flagship location in the Made in KC Marketplace on the Plaza and online. Twelve boutiques in the KC-metro area carry EB pieces as well as boutiques in Austin, Texas and Longmont, Colorado. As she’s experienced success, Bordner is intentional to collaborate with and coach other creatives, not coming to them with her idea of what she wants to do, but asking what they could create together. She has partnered with local maker, Alyssa J, to offer the hand-letterer’s work in a colorway only found at Made in KC Marketplace, and she has upcoming projects in the works with local jewelers, ceramicists and illustrators. EB’s collaboration with Kansas City style blogger Annie Austin helps potential customers envision how a particular piece may look in use, through Austin’s styled photographs and in person at popups throughout Kansas City. Over coffee, Austin and Bordner discuss design and what’s next in fashion. Austin suggested having one of the earrings soldered in another place, changing the way the earring lays on the ear. This took the EB 3-piece jewelry collection to a 7-piece collection, which has turned out to be a customer favorite, Bordner says. “She took the bones of what I did, moved stuff around, and made it a lot stronger,” she says. “This whole collection wouldn’t exist without Annie.” Overall, Bordner says the growth of her business has been like a crock pot – a slow-cook process where she introduces pieces, finds out what people like best, and produces favorites in a larger quantity. The growth has been gratifying.

“TO SEE SOMEONE LOVE YOUR PRODUCT ENOUGH TO BUY IT IS SO EXCITING,” BORDNER SAYS. “THEY SPEND THEIR HARD-EARNED MONEY ON IT, AND I TRY TO REALLY VALUE THAT.” Now, Bordner finds herself balancing the tension that comes with the leap from being a small, local business to having her work more mass-produced to keep up with demand. Continuing to design leather and original jewelry in KC and have it manufactured in LA is something she’s considering. “I want to hold on to these little moments and keep things small as long as I possibly can,” she says. 24

ANNA VOGEL

(CON TI N U ED)

ONE OF ANNA’S EARLIEST MEMORIES IS EMBROIDERING A HEART WITH HER MOM AND THEN MOVING ON TO ATTEMPTING TO MAKE DOLL CLOTHES. Sewing has always been a part of her life. With fabric, she always felt like there were endless possibilities. “I’ll always be grateful to my mother and grandmother for giving me the tools to be creative and for being a huge reason why I do what I'm doing now. I wouldn't have the skills required to sew and design as I do currently without their guidance. To this day, I use bits and pieces from my late grandmother's stash,” Vogel says. Vogel credits her father, a successful entrepreneur, with encouraging her to pursue her dreams. She believes she may not have had the confidence to dive into a real business without his support and belief in her. After the birth of her daughter in 2014, Vogel started working on little pieces for her baby and decided to take the plunge with her own label, GoldyBelle. “My first business prior to my clothing line was a pottery and gift boutique that I named Florence Adams after my grandmother, so it only seemed natural to name my next venture after grandma Florence's mother, my great-grandmother, GoldyBelle,” Vogel explains. Living and studying for a couple of years in Europe shaped a lot of Anna’s design sensibilities. She leans toward classic, timeless looks and updates them in ways that are both practical and contemporary. “I know the general shapes I like to use in kids’ clothing and enjoy the process of making samples. More often than not I end up tweaking and adjusting a rough pattern until it has the look I'm trying to achieve. Then my very talented pattern maker takes it and streamlines the look for production.” They started by making everything locally, but as they grew, they moved some of their production to Los Angeles. They soon found that it's harder to keep a close eye on the process from beginning to end from afar. Although Vogel was generally happy with the production, there were often delays and problems she couldn't address from such a distance. “Before producing in Los Angeles, I searched for local manufacturing. At that time, there was nothing. I am thrilled that we are now able to move everything we produce to local Kansas City businesses. It's not only practical and much easier, but it fills me with so much local KC pride. That being said, I will always use any local help with seamstresses who like this kind of work that lets them stay at home if needed for unique small batch and/or heirloom quality looks.” They often use vintage materials for these pieces and have so much fun working on these creative looks. Having both truly handmade pieces and local production is a dream come true for her. CONTINUED >

While Vogel loves creating the really unique and special looks, she’s been moving toward styles that are both more practical and pretty. She focuses on high quality from her local handmade seamstresses, which is immediately evident in GoldyBelle products. They line their knits, try to hide interior seams when they can, and add unique details that you won't find elsewhere. Other ways that Vogel has made these pieces practical can be seen in one of her most popular pieces, the Heidi Dress which features leather details that snap off and on for easy laundering. “It's a tremendous help to have my daughter, Clara, as my own little model to try designs on. In fact, because she isn't really interested in "modeling” for me, it actually helps me to know when something is practical or not. One of our most popular designs, the Sophia dress, has been tested up and down by her which led to a few design changes over the years,” Vogel explains. “Clara is very independent and loves to dress herself, which led me to realize that a dress that is the same in both the front and back is truly helpful.” The Sophia dress has a design that has proven to be really popular, especially because this dress is suitable for playing at the park or going to church, and the little wearer can slip it on and look perfect with ease. “My hope is that when your daughter wears GoldyBelle, she is both comfortable and stands out a bit for her unique yet classic look,” Vogel says. You can find out more about GoldyBelle at GoldyBelle.com, @goldybelle on Instagram, or on their official Facebook, GoldyBelle. Vogel loves to chat and share behind the scenes with her customers in an additional Facebook group, so search GoldyBelle Chat and B/S/T and join the fun! September 2018 | Lee’s Summit Lifestyle

Two of these players, defenders Matt Besler and Seth Sinovic joined forces with friends and fellow soccer enthusiasts Daniel Kerley and Ryan Van Goethen to create a clothing line that combines the function of high-performance athletic wear with the laid-back casual vibe of the athleisure trend. The resulting clothing line is called STATES and is meant to reflect the growing American soccer identity. With their summer 2018 launch, they are debuting a line of shirts, shorts, pants, and

STATES

(CON TI N UED)

STATES IS THE AMERICAN ANSWER TO AN ATHLETIC STYLE THAT HAS BEEN POPULAR IN EUROPE FOR A WHILE. WHAT BRANDS INSPIRED YOU? Like any great business we spend a lot of time studying competing brands, but to be honest we are as much influenced by great brands (not just apparel ones) that have created a devoted and loyal following - those that stand for a mission bigger than selling product, but telling a story, giving its followers (in our case soccer players, fans, followers) a voice. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OR COMBO FROM THE NEW LINE? We divide our product lineup between two categories ‘on-pitch’ and ‘off-pitch’, but with the idea that all States’ products are soccer-inspired with technical and performance properties. On-Pitch: Designed with an eye to the specifications of on-field performance. Tested at the highest level by world-class players. Our on-pitch shirts feature soft, breathable fabric with moisture wicking technology, four-way stretch, perforated venting, and flat lock seams. Shorts feature functional stretch, an inter-lock fabric in the waistband and side paneling and strategic ventilation through a stretch mesh gusset. The shorts retain their form even while wicking away moisture and remaining lightweight during the toughest training session. Off-Pitch: Designed with an eye to post-game lifestyle and off-field wear. Athletic-lifestyle apparel with an ability to stand up to performance standards and fashion demands. Off-pitch shirts are designed to have the feel of a favorite broken-in tee but with the temerity to withstand a rough or workout session. The States hat features lightweight technical fabric that wicks sweat and repels moisture and stains. WHERE WILL STATES BE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE? All of our products will be available on our website at States.soccer. The site is much more than just an eCommerce platform; it is a storytelling destination with editorial content and visual identities that tell the narratives of the sport in this country. WHAT LEAD YOU TO BECOME PERSONALLY INVOLVED IN CREATING A CLOTHING LINE FROM SCRATCH? The meteoric rise of the sport in this country is nothing short of amazing, and we believe we are still in the early innings. As we sat around as a group, we felt that among the different business verticals of the sport, apparel represented an underserved market and one lacking a clear sport-associated identity. Almost all the other large U.S. sports clearly have a brand tied to their rise in popularity almost synonymously, track & field, football, baseball, yoga, surf/skate… we aim to be this for Soccer in America.

THE BUSTLE OF WORKERS AND HUM OF SEWING MACHINES HAVE LONG SINCE LEFT THE OLD KANSAS CITY GARMENT DISTRICT. At one time, however, garment manufacturing was the city's No. 2 industry, employing more than 4,000 people. An estimated one in seven American women wore a garment that was manufactured in Kansas City. "We don't always appreciate the history we have here in Kansas City," says Kerry Duffin, owner of The Garment Factory in the West Bottoms and the Lucy Marie and Herman product lines. "Up until the early 1990s, we were second only to New York City in garment production. It fell off a cliff with NAFTA and China trade opening up." However, Duffin believes the industry is poised for a revival that could create thousands of jobs and put the city on the national map for apparel. "Kansas City has a huge opportunity to capture the Made in the USA apparel industry," he says. "Much of the manufacturing is done in Los Angeles, which is perceived as fake, but we are perceived as authentic. Kansas City has a heck of an opportunity to wake up and grasp. The growth can be exponential, because bringing in one business can attract 10 more." Duffin has put his money where his mouth is. The Kansas City native, who started out working in the music industry, had a brainstorm while visiting the South Beach area of Miami. He noticed women wearing a style of jeans that were designed to flatter their figures. Market research convinced him that proper fit is a top priority for women purchasing denim. As a result he launched the Lucy Marie line for women and later the Herman line for men (both named after his parents) in 2013 (www.lucyandherman.com).Two years later, he opened the Garment Factory to provide contract manufacturing.

FAITH REFLECTIONS

SUMMIT CHRISTIAN

ACADEMY S O A R S B R I G H T LY IN OUR COMMUNIT Y

SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY POSSESSES A LEGACY OF STELLAR EDUCATION. It was born in 1989 at the kitchen table of two caring moms with a dream of a community Christian school welcoming to all families from Christian denominations. That year, they started an independent, non-denominational Christian school in a local church. Each year, families looking for stellar biblically-integrated academics, enrolled at SCA. In 1993, Summit Christian Academy split into two campuses to house a growing student body. “The founders envisioned a future where all students could attend classes together on one campus and on property owned by the school,” notes Linda Harrelson, head of school. “God blessed that dream and in 1999, SCA took that first step and opened at 1450 SW Jefferson with 330 students. The second phase included the completion of the building at 1450 SW Jefferson in 2000.” Harrelson explains that in 2002, the school board decided to add the first ninth grade class, which marked the beginning of another exciting leg of the journey, with the goal of adding one high school grade per year. “In the spring of 2004, the charter graduating class of 13 students ventured beyond the halls of SCA, stepping onto the next path God

Things to do after completing your divorce Stange Law Firm, PC

After going through a divorce, many become so consumed about the divorce itself, that it’s hard to know where to turn to next. For many, it’s hard to finally accept that the divorce is completed and now it’s time to move on and put the divorce behind them. This list is certainly not all-inclusive, but here are some things an individual should think about doing after the divorce is completed, from a financial and emotional standpoint: • Go back and look at your wills and estate planning documents. For many individuals, they may have set up a will, trust or other estate planning documents when they were married. Now that the divorce is over, it is likely time to re-look at those documents and have them amended. • In terms of bank accounts, life insurance and other assets, many of those accounts are likely setup as payable on death or transfer upon death to the ex-spouse. It is likely time to amend those designations accordingly. • If you have kids from the mar56

riage, now is the time to take some time away with the kids during your custody time and enjoy life. It’s likely time to try to re-establish some sense of normalcy after the divorce for you and the children. • You might want to talk to a therapist or counselor about the experience. For many, there were likely unexpected things that happened, or unexpected emotions that came to the surface, that likely need to be talked through. • It might be that you were granted a vehicle, boat or house as part of the divorce. Do the titles need to be updated? With a house, a quit claim deed is often needed. With vehicles or boats, you may need to go to the proper state office and ensure the titles are updated. Often, you may need a gift affidavit from your ex-spouse. • If there are retirement accounts that needed to be divided, like 401ks or pension plans, they usually require a Qualified Domestic Relations Order to be submitted to effectuate any division designated in the divorce decree.

For most individuals, it’s critical that they ensure that this take place properly. This list certainly is not all-inclusive. But these are some items to think about after completing a divorce. If you have gone through a divorce and need assistance with some postdivorce matters, it is always important to have an attorney. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. No matter the family law issue you face, we are here to help you rebuild your life.
