his incredible dad, grandfathers and uncles, so he has had no shortage of positive male role models, but there is something unique about a mentor outside of the family that invests in your kids and calls out greatness in them, expecting and challenging them to rise to the occasion. Finding someone who looks at your child with intentionality and the will to encourage them to reach their personal best is invaluable and is something that I have seen on a regular basis this year with his cross-country and distance track coach, Glenn Daniels. It is evident that Coach Daniels knows what is important in life because above all else, he cares most about the well-being of his “distance family” as he calls them and treats them as such—a family. He lets them know his door is always open to them no matter what, which is evident, as most lunch periods his boys can be seen eating lunch in his room. By example, he teaches these boys how to show respect to everyone, calls out greatness in them, and, at the same time, shows compassion and care for them. He teaches them to strive for goals, both short-term and long-term, so that they can reach

and experience those small successes but also have something to strive for. I have watched my freshman change so much over the course of this year due to the

constant influence of this man, and from being part of a team that has such a healthy, encouraging and supportive environment in which he felt welcomed and called upon to be more than he was when he began. The drive to be a better runner of course, but also a better person, striving to do his best in all areas of his life came out of being under Coach Daniel’s leadership. There is no one that motivates my son quite like Coach Daniels. To all of you out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, no matter how big or small, I applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect

SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY SENIOR NAMED ALL-AMERICAN Summit Christian Academy senior Connor Healy was recently named an Academic AllAmerican by the National Speech & Debate Association. There are more than 141,000 student members of the NSDA, and less than 500 are named to the Academic All-American Award list. This accomplishment sets Connor among the top half of 1 percent of all student members of the NSDA across the country.

PEACE PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS OF PROVIDING HEALING AND HOPE TO KIDS IN NEED Over the last five years, Peace Partnership has helped more than 1,200 parents and kids find purpose and healing in their lives through its in-office counseling services and in-school counseling program. By keeping session fees low (in-office rates begin at $5 per session, and the in-school counseling program is free to students), parents can find help for their children and still afford to receive the help they need as well. for the entire property, pulling in elements which are unique to our individual passions and make it very livable,” he says. An exquisite boat was custom-built as their bar,

which is the centerpiece of the space and runs through

the building and out to the pool. A local craftsman spent four months constructing the boat with wood harvested from across the country. Every fish in the space is an exact replica of their catches

across the world. Avid catch-and-release anglers, their desire was to mount reproductions.

“Each fish represents a family or friend’s journey over the last twenty years. This serves as a memory to what matters most to our family – live life full of adventure,” he says, adding, “We love to entertain and having professional grade ice cream, slush and margarita machines were a small investment that have paid huge dividends.” Each material was selected through searches across the Midwest and Florida to give the room an authentic feel. An old barn roof for the interior ceiling, teak tree from Florida for the boat bar top, custom siding that was hand-weathered and painted, colored concrete floor creates a shack feeling and, of course, THE BOAT. “Our favorite part of the space is the transitional nature of mirroring the outdoors with the indoors. You can move from the pool house bathroom that has a flowing river feel, to the stoned pool, up to the outdoor pool bar, inside to the boat bar and then through the doors for a lake view,” he says. The family uses the space as a gathering place for friends. It is built to be “kid friendly,” and they encourage guests to bring their entire family. He notes, “The only hard part is keeping the ice cream machine full and the kids from spilling slushies throughout the house.” “We are most proud of the craftsmen that helped us shape the entire property. Scott L a m a st e r Scott Lamaster is the founder of Taking it to the Streets, a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to bringing about change and impacting lives through community outreach programs, providing aid to first responders and through disaster relief. He is well-known nationally for his passion to serve, bringing hope and encouragement to those in need. In April, his organization was awarded the 2017 Community Leadership Award from the director of the FBI for the its outstanding service and commitment to Kansas City. “When people see our vehicles out serving through our many outreach programs, out aiding first responders and on disaster scenes, they know hope has arrived,” he says. “Our team of volunteers is there to make a difference.”

Bill Baird Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird is passionate about his hometown, and he views himself as an advocate for the community. “I believe in the collective voice of the people,” he says. “It’s my priority to engage the community, provide information in a user-friendly way and give our citizens opportunities to share their feedback and opinions.” A commercial and residential real estate broker in Lee’s Summit for the past 20 years, he has volunteered, fundraised and served on numerous nonprofit boards throughout his career. Each service experience makes him a better community member, he says. When his school board term ended, he felt he had more to give in the way of public service, so he ran for mayor. He took office in April. “I believe in giving our citizens, businesses, organizations and stakeholders more opportunities to collaborate with each other and the city,” he says.

M at t S a n n i n g As executive director of Lee’s Summit Social Services, Matt Sanning’s role is to help sustain and evolve a support network for local families that have found themselves in tough times. Each day, he hopes he has the opportunity to make someone else’s day better. He says he has a front-row seat to witness the amazing community of volunteers and donors as they create solutions for families in need through their hard work, huge hearts and unwavering commitment. Outside of work, he says his passion is to serve wherever he’s needed. Corey McDonald Corey McDonald, the pastor at New Springs Community Church, has a unique vision for how his congregation will invest in the community. In November 2017, the church opened New Springs Community Clinic, which provides free medical care to anyone who needs it on the third Sunday of every month. He doesn’t believe his church can impact the community only through a Sunday morning service. He envisions his church serving as a corridor for medical and mental health care as well as a foundation for building relationships with caring, genuine community members. “When people walk into the clinic, I want them to feel like they’re in a professional setting and that they’re loved and cared for,” he says. “We don’t want them to feel like a second-class citizen because they don’t have insurance. FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH JALAPEÑO SLAW INGREDIENTS (SANDWICH) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Cayenne pepper, to taste Boneless, skinless chicken breasts Vegetable oil (as needed) Sesame seed bun Pickles

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together in a shallow bowl. 2. Fill your skillet with oil to about 1-inch deep and heat to 350 degrees. 3. Coat your chicken breasts in the flour and seasoning mixture, then carefully place them into the heated oil. 4. Cook until golden brown with an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 5. Lightly toast your sesame seed bun, then top with pickles, fried chicken breast and slaw to taste.

FOR THE SLAW Combine mayo, hot sauce, garlic and dill pickle juice with shredded red cabbage, pickled onions and candied jalapeños.

MARINATE THE STEAK IN THE REFRIGERATOR FOR UP TO 24 HOURS FOR EXTRA FLAVOR.

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons dried oregano Salt and pepper, to taste Choice of steak Fresh flour or corn tortillas Lime, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Blend the red onion, garlic, adobo sauce, olive oil and seasoning in a food processor or blender, adding water as needed until smooth. 2. Marinate the steak in the mixture for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling. 3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large grill pan and add the steak, cooking to desired doneness. Let rest in a foil tent for 10 minutes then chop into small pieces and assemble tacos as desired.

For many clients, they might get divorced and they get a lot (or even most) of what they want. Is that a win or is it a loss — because the client didn’t get everything they

wanted (which almost nobody does in a divorce)? In the end, most divorce or family law matters have a number of issues at stake, like the divorce itself, property and debt division, custody, support, spousal support and attorney’s fees. This means that a client might like the outcome in several areas, but may have wanted something different in one, two or several areas. This is remarkably different from a criminal matter where after a trial, the defendant is either found guilty or innocent. And it’s remarkably different from a personal injury case where the defendant is either found liable or not liable for whatever negligence was alleged. In the end, a “win” or a “loss” is complicated in a divorce or family law matter. The issues are often many in number and the lines blurry in terms of what is a “win” or a “loss.” A lawyer also cannot change the facts of a case. Sometimes, in other words, a lawyer gets a case with good facts. Other times, they get a case with bad facts. This is not necessarily

a reflection on the skills of the lawyer. Further, does anybody really win in a divorce? Or is it more an issue of who loses less? What most clients will want to find in an attorney is somehow who is competent, communicative and diligent versus seeking out a win-loss record. A win-loss record is rarely a good measure in divorce and family law. WHAT'S BETTER THAN A FRESH CUP OF ROASTED COFFEE TO GET YOUR DAY STARTED? Home roasting ensures that your coffee is as fresh as possible, and the roast is as light or dark as you prefer. Choose green beans that are uniform in size and color. This ensures an even and consistent roast and flavor. Getting these two elements correct - color and size - is vital to avoid producing coffee with an inconsistent and unfavorable flavor. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: + Air Popcorn Popper. + Two metal mesh colanders. + Bowl or other container to place in front of the popper + Oven mitt + Airtight container + 1/2 cup raw green coffee beans Step 1: Measure out 1/2 cup green coffee beans and pour them into the popper where you would normally pour the popcorn kernels. Step 2: Turn on the air popper. Place the bowl in front of the machine where the popped popcorn would exit, to catch the chaff. Watch the beans swirling around in the machine. They are not going to pop out the way popcorn would. In a few minutes, as the machine heats up, you’ll see the beans turning brown. Next, you’ll hear the beans starting to making a cracking sound. At the first crack, this will produce a light roast. The longer you let the beans roast from this point on, the darker the roast you will achieve. You will hear the beans pop like popcorn for several seconds. Then the sound will taper off. The next stage is when the beans start to sound more like Rice Krispies crackling in milk. This is called the “second crack” and signals that you have reached what is called a dark roast. Step 3: The minute you have reached your desired roast, turn off the air popper very quickly and pour the beans out of the popper into one of the colanders. Step 5: Place the beans in a container that has a tight-fitting lid. However, do not apply the lid at this time. Freshly roasted beans must be allowed to “de-gas” for at least two hours, up to overnight, to achieve their full coffee flavor. Steps by Mary Hunt of Every Day Cheapskate
