sacrificed, and the legacy they passed down. I have been fortunate enough to have many strong female role models, including my incredible mother, but I wanted to honor a woman who had such a lasting impact on me throughout my entire life, my grandmother, Jean Newman. We called her Mama Jean. She lived to be 91, and, up to the end of her life, she was a thoughtful, vibrant, classy and incredibly smart woman. Even as a young child, I knew there was something about her that I wanted to absorb. Always up for a party or a social gathering, she brought the class. Everything about her impressed me. The way she dressed, decorated her home, her gourmet cooking and even the way she wrapped a present was a work of art. She knew how to make every little detail special. Mama Jean made getting old look fun, and she acted and looked like she was 20 years younger than she was. My grandparents were night owls. They stayed up every night until midnight and slept in late. Fancy appetizers were a nightly occurrence to tide them over so they could enjoy a late dinner with a glass of wine on the deck. They placed a

Mama Jean always put others before herself, even when she was nearing the end of her life. Instead of concentrating on any discomfort, she prayed for her caregivers and family instead. As a mother of eight, she set an example of selflessness and devotion to prayer her entire life, praying for all 90 of her family members by name every night. I learned so much from the example she set forth her entire life, and the memories I have of her I hold dear to my heart. This month, we are celebrating women in our community. LEE'S SUMMIT FIRM PICKED FOR KCI AIRPORT PROJECT When the $1 billion renovation of Kansas City International Airport is completed, there will be a little bit of

The Ultimate in Outdoor Comfort

Lee’s Summit influence in that massive project. That’s because small-but-mighty Land3 Studio, located in downtown Lee’s Summit, has been designated the lead and only landscape architecture firm selected to work on the revamped KCI. The six-person firm, led by Lee’s Summit resident and owner Bob Bushyhead, recently got word of the big victory, which will be a legacy project for the crew. According to Bob, Edgemoor committed to up to 40 percent minority and women-owned firms on the project. On its website, Edgemoor says it has added 15 Kansas City-area women- and minority-owned firms to the team, including Land3, a NativeAmerican-owned company. “This is probably the most important project we’ve worked on because of the statement it makes about Kansas `City. We are extremely excited about this opportunity,” he says. “We enjoy working on larger projects and look to be involved over the next three to four years.”

A CREATIVE, FEEL-GOOD SPACE. THIS HOME GIVES US ALL THE DESIGN FEELS. ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE

THE HOMEOWNERS WERE ABLE TO COMBINE TEXTILE INSPIRATION FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO CREATE THIS COZY AND ECLECTIC SPACE. Warm red kilim and Persian rugs ground the space and add warmth and texture while the traditional patterns impart a sense of familiarity and timelessness. Indigo-dyed throw pillows add a bohemian flair inspired by African mud clothes and indigo dying techniques of Japan. Indigo has been everywhere lately—maybe because the textiles remind us all of our favorite pair of selvedge denim and a soft white T-shirt. The leather knobs on the kitchen cabinets latch perfectly onto the wooden kitchen shelves to complete the natural look of this home. Now to the bathroom. Not only is there a beautiful open view of the trees with solitary peace, but the room is also decked headto-toe with grayscale marble. If you are afraid to get your feet wet with an all-marble bathroom, maybe cold feet is a concern? Don't worry—a vintage rug does the trick. Overall, this beautiful space is a real-life Pinterest board that has us inspired to renovate and refine. CONTINUED >

MATCHA TEA CAKE WITH RASPBERRIES INGREDIENTS • 1/2 pound (1 3/4 cups) whole almonds RECIPE BY RACHEL CIODAS YIELDS ONE LAYER CAKE OR 24 MINI CAKES

or ½ pound blanched almond flour • 6 large eggs, separated • 1 1/4 cups sugar • 2 tablespoons matcha powdered tea • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, divided into 2 parts • 2/3 cup egg whites, from 5 to 6 large eggs • 1 1/4 cups sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 pint raspberries INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9-inch cake pan. 2. Grind almonds to a fine consistency (or use almond flour.) Beat egg yolks and sugar until fluffy. Add ground almonds, ½ teaspoon vanilla and salt and beat until smooth. Whip whites to soft peaks, and fold into almond mixture. Pour cake batter into pan. Bake 40 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, then remove. 3. For buttercream, put egg whites, sugar and salt into a glass bowl. Set the bowl on top of a pot of simmering—not boiling—water. Stir constantly until sugar dissolves and temperature has reached 175 degrees. Remove from heat and beat with electric mixer until stiff peaks form. On low speed, add ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, then add butter slowly cube by cube until velvety smooth. 4. To finish, cut cooled cakes with 1-inch cookie cutters, or use full-sized cake layers. Layer with Swiss meringue buttercream and top with frosting. Garnish with matcha and raspberries.

Cynthia Wright Cynthia Wright is a wife and a mother of three who juggles a writing and media career while homeschooling her girls and earning her degree in marriage and family therapy. She volunteers at Mother’s Refuge, a shelter that houses at-risk pregnant and teenage mothers, as well as Suburban Balance of Lee’s Summit, which provides opportunities for minority youth living in the suburbs. She learned very early on to stand for what was right and to use her voice to advocate for both herself and others. One question she is frequently asked is how she manages to juggle all of these things. “For our family, it isn’t about juggling. It’s about making bold steps to rearrange our lives in a way that has allowed us the time and energy to pursue our dreams," she says. "My biggest motivation is to encourage and inspire my daughters to not let any obstacle stand in the way of accomplishing their goals and ambitions.”

t h e e x e c u t i v e Angie Lucchi Angie Lucchi, the assistant vice president of Outreach and Telemedicine for HCA MidAmerica, fosters relationships between HCA and its rural hospital partners. She loves what she does because many of her family and friends live in rural areas. Volunteering is her passion, as she loves to be part of something that makes a positive impact on the community. With a cancer diagnosis in 2016 due to the BRCA1 mutation, she was faced with five surgeries and radiation therapy. She soon became involved with two amazing organizations, Bra Couture KC and FORCE, both of which give support and advocate for cancer patients and families. Of all the things that she has been a part of, being a mom is the most important blessing in her life. She was able to volunteer in many capacities with her children, even during her cancer diagnosis, and had a community of support through it all. “The amazing families in my community and HCA rallied around me when I needed them most," she says. "They say it takes a village to raise a family, and I truly have the best one around.”

Required Minimum Distributions Not Needed? Some investors dread having to take their required minimum distributions (RMDs) from their IRAs and 401(k)s after age 70½. Besides the complicated calculation and the 50% penalty if it’s not taken, most investors don’t necessarily like the idea of being required to take distributions just for the purpose of paying taxes. If you don’t want to take RMDs or don’t need the distributions to supplement your income, consider: • Charitable Donations Have your distribution paid directly to a charity, eliminating any tax on the distribution. Since the new tax law raised the standard deduction, this strategy could save money on taxes while still giving to your favorite causes.

Wise Wealth, LLC is a Registered Investment Adviser Firm in Missouri and Kansas.

• Life Insurance You could take the net proceeds and use that amount to buy life insurance. Since the death benefits of a life insurance policy are 100% income-taxfree, you could provide for your heirs by just making good use of your RMDs (medical underwriting required). If you would like to find out more about your RMDs and what strategies may work for you, give your local Wise Wealth team a call today to review your options!

Think twice before posting on social media Stange Law Firm, PC

In a divorce or family law matter, emotions can often run high. It can cause parties to want to speak out or vent on social media. To some, posting online can have a therapeutic impact. When others like or comment positively on their post, they can also feel reinforced. They can feel like others agree with their perspective. Of course, anything put online can end up being used as evidence in a divorce or family law matter. An individual never really knows who will see the post and either print, save it or forward it to the opposing party, opposing attorney or guardian ad litem. And while a post can make an individual feel better, the reality is that it might paint them in a poor light even if they do not see it that way themselves. This can have a negative impact on a case outcome. In a divorce or family law matter with 40

kids, the older the children are, the greater likelihood they will end up seeing the post. If the post paints the other parent in a bad light, the kids might not like it or be emotionally damaged by it. This is not something that is likely to impress a family court judge. When going through a divorce or family law matter, parties are usually well advised to think twice before posting. And when in doubt, it is almost always wise not to hit the enter button. This can be hard for parties who have always been active on social media. But in the midst of litigation, parties are almost always smart to make no comments about their case online in any shape, matter or form. Posts that do not involve the case should also be positive in nature. Even posts that are negative in nature, or that show partying or other inappropriate information, can be incredibly damaging.

Parties should really work through their emotions and frustrations in more productive ways in a divorce or family law matter. This can involve having candid discussion with an attorney. It also might mean talking to a counselor or therapist versus venting online. Stange Law Firm, PC limits their practice to family law matters including divorce, child custody, child support, paternity, guardianship, adoption, juvenile matters, collaborative law and other domestic relation matters. Stange Law Firm, PC gives clients 24/7 access to their case through a secured online case tracker found on the website. They also give their clients their cell phone numbers. Stange Law Firm, PC understands the emotions that can come from a divorce or family law matter. No matter the family law issue you face, we are here to help you rebuild your life. “WE BELIEVE IN DOING WHAT WE DO SO THAT TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE A MORE POSITIVE PLANET.”

I Am Noticed is not a one-and-done program. It offers an ongoing theme-based curriculum for the teachers and peer models to utilize because they are the key to sustaining the program. The school chooses the peer models with guidelines provided by Amy and Jaime. Peer model leaders are chosen because they have kindness, empathy and citizenship as a part of who they are. Everyone in the school is to take on a leadership role by being themselves, being resilient and confident, and noticing others in the school—this way they are leading the positive message through these behaviors. Amy and Jaime want to create stronger citizens because these children are our future. At the program’s heart is the I Am Noticed Cycle. It can be used throughout our lives. The cycle consists of simple and intentional practices, including "Want to," choosing gratitude and the concept of reframing; "Positive I Ams," teaching the importance of positive self-talk; "Noticing Goodness," the powerful impact of sharing kindness; “Receiving,” the importance of

Their objective is to create confident and resilient people that can take the skills they learned in school and apply them in real-life situations. Amy and Jaime are all about discovery. They love to notice the amazing people in the school and all the amazing work being done. In addition to noticing goodness, they like to learn the areas in which the school would like to improve. They do not go in with the intent of “fixing” schools, but to celebrate all the hard work and giving done by educators. Their intention is to work in collaboration with the school's leadership team to determine the best approach in helping increase positivity in its culture. They do this through professional development, peer model-training programming, kickoff assemblies and family enrichment. They want participants to notice the goodness in themselves and others.

Both Alana and her brother graduated from LSHS as well and were greatly involved in athletics. To say that the Groom Family have embraced the Lee’s Summit community and have become part of its rich history would be an understatement. But the Grooms are just as significant to this town. There is no better exemplification of this than by the community outreach after the heartbreaking passing of Mark and Kelli Groom in August 2015 following a tragic traffic accident. The city and school that had been a prominent backdrop in the Grooms’ lives had now become a blanket during a time of difficulty.
