of year, and for many reasons. I love the traditions and the beauty of the season and watching my kids experience the wonder of the holidays as I once did. This time of year brings back a flood of memories of my grandmother and all she did to make this season special. Christmas was by far her favorite holiday, in which she hosted all 60 people in our family each year at her home. Although she has since passed, the atmosphere she created and the love that she shared through all she did to make the holidays special still lives on in all of our hearts. She truly blessed all of us with lasting memories of Christmas Eve night shared with family, and all of us are carrying on many of the traditions she started with our own families. I was given a few of her Christmas decorations after she passed, and every year when I pull them out of storage, it evokes strong emotions of being back in her home on Christmas Eve. My favorite holiday item that I got from her is the brass electric candles that once glowed in her front windows to greet us as we came to her door. It always looked magical to me, and as I put them in my window each year, I get that familiar feeling I felt every time we pulled up to her house on Christmas Eve. As simple as those candles are, they represent the feelings of love, contentment and holiday spirit to me. I am grateful for the family I have to celebrate the holidays with and dearly miss the ones who have gone on. There are so many people alone during this season, and it only takes a little bit of effort to make someone feel loved or thought of during this time. Our city is a city full of people who love to give. If you don’t have a local resource or organization that you are already plugged into, look in your neighborhood for someone who spends the holidays alone. There are so many ways to bless

SUMMIT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY TEACHER NAMED GPACS TEACHER OF THE YEAR Summit Christian Academy (SCA) is pleased to announce that SCA Teacher of the Year and Fine Arts Coordinator Mrs. Trissa Lucht was named the Great Plains Alliance of Christian School’s 2018 Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made at the annual GPACS student conference. GPACS is an alliance organized to provide a framework for communication and cooperation among Christian schools in the greater Kansas City area for preschool through secondary students. MEGAN MOSIER IS THE DESIGNER BEHIND MEGAN GENSKY INTERIORS. After working for Magnolia in Waco, Texas and winning awards while working for a local builder, she decided it was finally her time to start her own design company. She stays busy during the holiday months setting up clients’ homes and offices for the holiday season. Besides holiday decorating services, she offers a wide variety of services such as virtual design, new construction design services, renovating, staging and furnishing services. “My favorite part of helping clients with their decorating is reconnecting with my them each holiday season. They each have a unique style that speaks to their personality and style. It’s so much fun continuing to recreate the decorations that have inspired many memories and traditions for their families,” Megan says. A plethora of holiday trends exist right now, but Megan says that a lot of vintage styles are coming back such as bottle brush trees, mercury glass ornaments, and retro motifs. “Mercury glass is a beautiful trend right now because it leans towards a timeless look. You can mix in so many different colors but still keep the elegance and class with the texture and look of mercury glass,” Megan says.

It is true that divorce filings are probably the most common type of family law case. Next to divorce filings, paternity cases are on the rise as well in the United States. After divorce and paternity actions, many wonder what are other common types of family law cases? The reality is that modifications (or motions to modify) are very common types of family law matters. Modification litigation can certainly encompass lots of cases on family law dockets throughout the country. Modifications are generally off-shoot cases from prior divorce and paternity actions. They take place when one party later comes back to court alleging that there are changes of circumstances of a substantial and continuing basis that warrants a modification.
A motion to modify can address issues from child custody (also known as parenting time and allocation of parental responsibilities in some states), to child support and spousal support. However, a motion to modify cannot address martial property and debt in a divorce that has already been divided via a divorce decree. This is generally viewed as final and nonmodifiable. While it is the goal of the family court to address these kinds of issues in a way such that they do not come back to court later, the reality is that many parties experience changes that end in them coming back to the court. For some parties, they might end up back in court on a modification once or twice. In other instances, parties can end up back in court on modifications fairly frequently. This is particularly true in high conflict cases where parties are constantly in conflict. It is unfortunate when this takes place and is needed. But the reality is that many parties end up back in court frequently litigating modifications. When parties think about family law cases, parties should not forget about modifica-
tions. When many parties are unhappy with the results of their divorce or paternity case, these are common types of family law matters. If parties are wishing to avoid modifications, options they ought to consider are collaborative divorce and mediation. Many opine that when parties are able to reach a settlement outside of court in which they are happy, they end up back in court less on modifications than when the court makes the decision for them. Some of the most valued gifts are given to us unconditionally, and many times it is in the least suspecting places. As the year comes to a close, I would like to mention a few gifts that I am grateful for. Behind the scenes of a publication there is a team of writers,
photographers, designers, contributors, and an editor. This is a diverse group that brings new perspectives to the table. The common thread is their desire to help people share their stories in an effective and compelling manner and deliver it with the hope of making a difference with little expected in return. They have a passion and a willingness to work hard behind the scenes without any accolades. Without this combination of contributors, the publication could not be a success.
