Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Creative Director

W

ith June being our men’s issue, coinciding with Father’s Day, I wanted to pay tribute to a phenomenal man in my life: my dad. My father is a man of few words, but when he speaks, people want to listen because he is full of wisdom and love. He listens to understand first and doesn’t always have to be understood. He is a natural peacemaker, and his humility is second to none. His incredibly humble and understanding nature is my favorite thing about him and constantly makes me so proud of the man he is. He seeks to understand difficult people and can find the good in absolutely anyone. My dad is a natural giver and will step up to help whenever there is a need and always acts like it isn’t a big deal at all. The need for credit for accomplishments or generous gestures does not exist with him, and he often gives in secret. He is so laid-back and positive, and his low-key, patient personality has always made me feel so secure. I don’t think I have ever seen him stressed in my life, and that says a lot for someone who raised 10 kids. Growing up my dad was always so much fun, and was known to go to great lengths to make up extravagant games, scavenger hunts and treasure maps for us to explore. He took an interest in any activity we were involved in and coached all of us in multiple sports. He was always present, always supportive and always ready to listen, even in our frustrating stages. I am barely scratching the surface about the man he is, but his influence in my life and the lives of my entire family will have an impact for generations to come. His character has made a lasting impression on all of us and is something we all strive to emulate.

BATTER UP!

HOW A KNEE REPLACEMENT TOOK AN ATHLETE FROM THE BENCH TO THE BATTER’S BOX

Sometimes, life has a way of throwing you a curve ball. For Lee’s Summit resident Jack Knight, he’s been thrown curve balls all his life - literally. From a young age, Knight has had a love for the sport of baseball. His passion for the game had found him competing year

“

round and in competitive leagues all across the country. His talent even provided him the opportunity to try out for the big leagues. Yet, much like the result of most competitive sports, his love for the game began to take an extreme toll on his body.

”

My knee was in a brace by the time I was thirty-five,” said Knight. “When I exercised, I tried to focus on my leg but, as a result, I couldn’t run. “I had to quit playing baseball, so I decided to consult with Dr. Dugan and look into a total knee replacement. After undergoing numerous knee surgeries five to be exact - his capability to play the game he loved had started to diminish significantly. He no longer had the mobility that he once had and his ability to enjoy the game he loved was nearly lost. “My leg was deformed and my knee had no muscle structure,” continued Knight. Gerald Dugan, M.D., a member of Rockhill Orthopaedic Specialists, Inc. and an

orthopaedic surgeon of over 20 years, introduced Knight to Saint Luke’s SurgicenterLee’s Summit’s Total Joint Program and quickly determined that he was a candidate for a knee replacement. At that point, Nurse Navigator Laurie Clipperton and the Total Joint Program staff began preparing him for his knee replacement surgery. He was taught the physical therapy regiment that he would follow after his operation and had all of his questions and concerns addressed, which, according to Knight, proved to be invaluable.

“

Not everyone is a candidate for a total knee replacement,” said Dr. Dugan. “After meeting with Jack, I saw his motivation to restore his way of life and knew he’d do his part to help make this a success story.

”

The Total Joint Program offers a personal touch by assigning a nurse to each patient requiring total joint surgery. From the day of scheduling until well after the surgery has been performed, the patient is always cared for. The nurse and staff members ensure the patient has everything needed and they maintain close contact because each nurse cares for every patient involved. To help him throughout his time at Saint Luke’s Surgicenter-Lee’s Summit, Knight had the undivided attention of Clipperton, who provides a concierge approach for each patient’s surgery and experience. Clipperton was available for any needs that Knight had, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “This program works incredibly well because everyone involved prioritizes the patient’s health and experience,” said Clipperton. “Dr. Dugan,

our anesthesiologists, physical therapists and nursing staff, myself included, work together with our patients to provide them the best possible results and outcomes. I think that’s what truly sets us apart and why Jack had such a successful surgery.” As a result of the attention and care he was provided from the staff at Saint Luke’s Surgicenter-Lee’s Summit, Knight felt completely and thoroughly prepared for the procedure, both before and after having it performed. Now, over four months removed from his surgery, Knight feels rejuvenated and thankful that he took back control of his life by not giving in to his injury. He’s eager to get back out on the baseball diamond and pick up right where he left off.

“

I really look at this as a miracle,” concluded Knight. “I recognize talent and when people are good at what they do. These people are good – Doctor Dugan, the nurses, the talent. To have them restore my ability to play the game I love, it’s unbelievable.

”

If you’re suffering from severe joint pain, don’t tolerate it for another day. To learn more about the Total Joint Program at Saint Luke’s Surgicenter-Lee’s Summit, contact Laurie Clipperton at 816-347-5844.

Allen’s inspiration was his own desire as a craft cocktail enthusiast of 10-plus years to find all the ingredients he now carries under one roof. Visitors to the historic storefront in downtown Lee’s Summit will find glassware, professional-grade barware and 12 different bitters from four manufacturers all in a pre-prohibition ambiance. Think exposed brick walls, rich leather seating, sideboards lined with bottles and barware and even a copper still for those who want to try their hand at making their own whiskey, bourbon or gin. Allen features spirits from seven Kansas City distilleries: Union Horse, Tom’s Town, S.D. Strong, Restless Spirits, Lifted Spirits, Mean Mule Distilling and J. Rieger & Company. A variety of shrubs from Kansas City Canning Company help him start a conversation with customers about their cocktail preference. With Canning Co. flavors like Apple Caraway, Strawberry, Beet Tarragon and Pickled Bloody Mary, the flavor profile can lean more savory or sweet, but will never lack in complexity. Off-thebeaten-path bitter flavors such as chocolate, celery, lemon, grapefruit and rosewater add another flavor punch. After pinpointing a cocktail, Allen will suggest the appropriate glass to enhance the taste of the drink. In addition to regular store hours, Allen also plans to offer extended hours for downtown events. Libations will host mixology classes featuring guest bartenders and spe-

Does an affair matter in divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC

With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced.

But with no fault divorce, that is no longer required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time with either parent, an affair could still

be looked at for custody and parenting time determination. Thus, parties who think an affair will Lee’s Summit Office 256 NE Tudor Road have no effect whatsoever are potenLee’s Summit, MO 64086 tially missing the mark. HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF SWING HOW I WENT FROM A 30 HANDICAP TO A SINGLE DIGIT IN TWO YEARS

ARTICLE DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT | PHOTOGRAPHY MCRAE PHOTOGRAPHY

W

hether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing: to be a single digit handicap or better. As

an attorney, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal. So, I dedicated the last two years improving my handicap from a 30 to an 8, and I plan to keep that number going down. I’ll share the formula for success I used, which will work for any golfer. USE THE FOLLOWING FOUR STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME DRASTICALLY: 1. GET FITTED FOR EQUIPMENT. If you are buying clubs off the rack, you

aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5-plus years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have a lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easy launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free; just make sure you get the correct length of club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle. On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment in 2017 have premium shaft options. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness, guaranteed. Talk to the guys at Golf MD in Lenexa—they can help fix what ails your game. One thought on putters: since you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf, it should be the most tailored club in your bag. 2. GET GOOD GOLF INSTRUCTION, REGULARLY. We’ve all heard someone say

“I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons—not just one—from a PGA-certified pro. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course.

2. Turn your feet 30 degrees toward the target and have 70 percent of your weight on your front foot, which also promotes the descending blow. 3. Use a putting stroke to hit the ball. That’s right, do not use your hands or wrists for power. This will create consistency and clean contact. 4. Don’t take the club back very far (depending on the length of the

If you perfect this shot, you’ll be chipping in and getting up and down much more often. I hope these four steps improve your game as much as they have mine.
