S

pring is here! I am so excited about what this season brings to our city with the amazing weather and the opening of so many outdoor venues. There really is so much to do in Lee’s Summit and surrounding areas as the weather starts to warm up, and best of all, warmer weather means my kids are constantly outside playing.

Every year around this time I start to ponder the idea of having a backyard garden. We have a spacious lot, and I love fresh fruits and veggies. The only problem is that I do not have a green thumb. It is def initely not a strength of mine, but I want it to be. In theory, it sounds like so much fun, but those poor plants do not want to be in my care. My husband, on the other hand, is amazing with plants, so maybe one of these days we will have our own backyard garden with him at the helm. In the meantime, I will continue to frequent the various farmers' markets around town. There are so many fun ones to visit, and they all have their own unique vibe, but best of all, it is so fun to talk to the vendors about what they do. I love supporting local farmers and makers, and these markets are the perfect place to do that and to meet people creating things in the community.

This month is our farm-to-table issue. We wanted to share with you some of the local resources in town as well as information on farm-to-table, how to support our local farmers and businesses and even share a few recipes. Slow Food is a very cool resource, so check them out if you have a chance at SlowFoodKC.org, and don't forget to visit downtown Lee's Summit's Farmers Market at 113 SE Douglas St. They have over 50 vendors offering fresh produce, meats, baked goods, plants and more.

nter Fig Tree Café and Bakery, and a sheet pan of baklava rests alongside a luxuriously frosted chocolate layer cake on an antique glass pedestal, a hint at owners Tom and Robyn Altoom’s unique culinary perspective. At the restau-

rant—Middle Eastern café meets Ozark grandmother’s bakery counter–the Altooms pride themselves on preparing ingredients the old-fashioned way and in offering patrons the type of food that they would want to serve their own family. This means sourcing as many items as possible from local farmers and growers while consistently maintaining the menu items that customers know and love. In the summer, Robyn harvests tomatoes and herbs from her own garden. While she describes herself as a "black thumb," her sister still runs the family’s farm near Ozark, Missouri, where Robyn grew up. In developing the restaurant's seasonal specials, Robyn shops local farmers markets and relies on relationships with local suppliers whenever possible.

CHEVROLET LEE’S SUMM “ The whole farm-to-table movement really caught on in Kansas City right around the time

CHEVROLET LEE’S SUMMIT

CHEVROLET LEE’S SUMMIT

we were opening up in May 2010,” Robyn says. “In Kansas City, now there are a lot of people

HAVE CONFIDENCE WHEN LEE’S BUYINGSUMM CHEVROLET YOUR NEXT VEHICLE

doing farm-to-table. We can get inspiration from them, and they can get inspiration from

the things we do, too. I hope to see more of it here in Lee’s Summit.”

Robyn inherited her love and knowledge of baking from rolling out pie crusts alongside her grandmother whom she describes as an old-fashioned domestic

goddess, and the tips and tricks have stuck with her. She’s also carried over the Depression-era value of not letting ingredients go to waste, which is well-aligned with her husband’s native Palestinian culture. “We hate to waste,” Robyn says. “That’s still very much a part of his culture. His family members are the very best recyclers you’ve ever come across. They’ve given me a lot of ideas.”

One example of this successful thrift and cultural fusion is Robyn’s award-winning most popular dessert. When Robyn and Tom were dating, she began gleaning and adapting recipes from his family. She started with a recipe for Um Ali, a traditional Egyptian dessert made with puff pastry, nuts and dried fruit. Incorporating the traditional ingredients, she swapped the phyllo dough for whole-grain bread, brioche and the tops she levels off her chocolate cakes that she just can’t stand to waste. The result is a gooey, decadent, Middle-Eastern inspired fudge cake sundae—the restaurant’s triple chocolate bread pudding. Other Fig Tree favorites include the Breakfast Bird Omelette, three La Ferme du Bonheur eggs filled with turkey, avocado, sun-dried tomato, turkey bacon and provolone cheese. For lunch, Robyn most frequently eats the hummus appetizer platter featuring house-made hummus served with grilled peppers, summer squash and pita bread. For a sweet and gluten-free treat, customers love the Sunrise bar, which features a toffee-textured whole grain crust filled with coconut, dates, pecans, almonds, cranberries and chocolate chips. “We do everything from scratch—from sauces to salad dressings,” Robyn says. “We don’t take any shortcuts ever.” This spring, the Fig Tree expanded its menu beyond breakfast and lunch. The restaurant is now open seven days a week and has expanded to offer dinner Thursday through Saturday, offering heartier fare such as its Mediterranean and kebab platters.

FARM-TO-TABLE MOVEMENT (CON TI N U ED)

couple of years ago, I found myself in an argument with my father about the local and “organic” meat I had purchased. In his defense, he uttered “but all food is organic!” Unfortunately, the definition of organic has changed during my father’s lifetime. Much the same, eating local has also evolved. Over the last century, we’ve seen the food industry completely change. We’ve modified our food supply to solve the scarcity problem of the past to meet the demands of a booming global population. At the time, it was called innovative. It was called humanitarian. We believed it saved lives. But the truth is, the science behind it was a shortterm solution for a long-term goal. The chemicals that made plants strong have made our bodies weak. The preservatives that extend the shelf life of our products have shortened our own lives. We’ve been told it’s either abundance or health. Humanity had to choose one. But the “farm-to-table” movement tells us this doesn’t have to be our story. That our story is one of hope, and they have been telling us this for decades. Restaurants and stores started valuing quality over ease and convenience thus emphasizing the purchase of locally sourced and seasonal products. The trend continues to increase when we, the consumer, participate with our personal choices. Kansas City has a strong loyalty to buying and eating local—many restaurants buy local produce, farmers markets abound and organizations like Cultivate Kansas City, Kansas City Food Circle and KC Healthy Kids are improving access to fresh foods. With all our efforts, we can cultivate our city for better health and be a vibrant “local roots” community. “Everyone has the right to good food. They should have the right to food they can afford, the right to food that fits their culture and the right to food that is grown with love and care. And it is especially important to have food that is grown by someone that you know,” Cultivate Kansas City Executive Director Katherine Kelly says. 30

FARM-TO-TABLE DINNER

Eric Carter, executive chef at The J Bar, prepared a delicious four-course farm-to-table dinner using local purveyor Shatto Farms, which is a small family-owned and operated dairy farm located just north of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Shatto expanded their home delivery service to include not only dairy but also meat, eggs, produce, bread and more, and they provide only the best in locally sourced food. Carter served a local lettuce salad with roasted beets and local goat cheese with Tank 7 Vinaigrette, herb roast campo lindo chicken with Shatto garlic butter and local grapevine-smoked beef tri-tip with rosemary and caramelized onion. He rounded the meal off with a delectable local bourbon-glazed apple tart topped with salted caramel ice cream. "My food is usually focused upon modern interpretations of Midwestern heritage cuisine," Carter says. Carter's go-to spices are fennel, coriander and smoked paprika. He advises trying herbs seasonally and says it is best to pair the milder flavored herbs with lighter proteins and the more forceful herbs like rosemary with heavy proteins and flavors. "Food was always a central part of my family growing up," Carter says. "Whether it was grilling with my grandfather, making pies with my grandma or growing a garden with my parents, food always brought everyone together." STEAK RUB FOR GRAPEVINE-SMOKED TRI-TIP

Arrowhead Yacht Club An Elegant, Rustic Affair ARTICLE ADRIANE TAYLOR

harming. At Arrowhead Yacht Club (the AYC) the beauty of nature is the perfect complement for any special occasion. The serenity of a gleaming lake, the vivid viridescent lawn and the simplicity of the lush landscape all collaborate in creating a unique experience for anyone seeking to find an idealistic place for a noteworthy gathering. Boasting the splendor of Lake Winnebago, it is not like any other event space in the Kansas City area. Add to this a comprehensive planning coordinator and clients are left with an experience of seeming serendipity. Classic. Two years ago Arrowhead Yacht Club celebrated its 50th anniversary and during its time in business, the country club has provided many with a special occasion venue from weddings to birthdays to corporate functions. The seafaring appeal of the AYC is the ideal backdrop for any celebration and the immense amenities give customers an exquisite ambiance complete with a sprawling dining room, endearing patio and a recently renovated cocktail lounge which was gutted from head to toe and is now embellished with beautiful granite and backsplash. Clients need not worry about food and beverages as its experienced staff offers an expansive menu from which to choose and can accommodate for any taste from the steak enthusiast to the hot dog connoisseur. The space can also comfortably seat 225 guests with room for more on the patio and lawn. At the AYC there are plenty of opportunities to rejoice, unwind and delight in the extraordinary scenery. Relaxed. Planning an event can seem like a daunting task especially when attempting to create picture-perfect moments worthy of warm feelings and joyous memories but at the AYC providing a seamless event is the norm. The goal is to make clients feel at ease with the process and to feel confident in the knowledge that there is someone there who will be with them from start to finish, from initial consultation until the last glass has been cleaned. At the AYC that person is Mollie Berry. Berry has several years of experience as an event coordinator and expresses that they have one main objective. "It is our goal to provide a completely turnkey and stress-free event where clients can just walk in and it’s done," Berry says. "I am with them every step of the way, I love being part of my clients' lives, and I love all my brides. Seeing the happiness when they get married, seeing them walk down the aisle, it is so much fun!" 34

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2017

Berry also explains another unique convenience in that the AYC operates on a f lat rate based on the customers’ needs which means they will not experience any financial surprises along the way. Preparing an unforgettable affair does not come by luck at this Lake Winnebago country club but by wonderfully orchestrated design. Distinctive. With a motto boldly stating, “Life is better at the lake,” it is no surprise that Arrowhead Yacht Club would have mastered the art of a successful festivity. One last important piece of advice Berry would like to add is to book as far in advance as possible as the club has proven to be an ideal location for many people looking for the perfect party venue. Celebrations await!

What happens to the house when we get divorced? Stange Law Firm, PC

When parties get divorced, the house is often one of the largest marital assets. In some cases, the parties can agree on what is going to happen with the house. But in other cases, the parties can disagree. In cases where the parties do not agree, the disposition can be complex. It can often become one of the biggest issues in the way of resolving the case. Many individuals ask their attorney what will happen with the house if they cannot agree. Each case is different and different judges and courthouses might have different preferences. But all things being equal, there are generally three realistic possibilities in many cases.

First, the parties might agree to put the house up for sale or the court might order it to be put up for sale. In these cases, the parties end up splitting any money earned through the sale of the home, in some ratio, after indebtedness is paid off, the real estate commission and the cost of the sale. Likewise, if any money is owed, the parties end up splitting whatever amount that turns out to be in some ratio. The other two general possibilities involves either the husband or the wife retaining the house. They then re-finance the house and buy out their spouse for their portion of the equity. To determine what that amount would be, a real estate appraisal becomes necessary in many cases where the parties cannot agree on the value.

There are certainly other possibilities and complexities that can come into play as well. For example, same parties may be completely unable to work together to sell the home. In those cases, the parties might agree, or the Overland Park Office court might order, the appointment of 7300 West 110th Street a commissioner to referee and coordiSuite 560 Overland Park, KS 66211 nate the sale. Raised Garden ARTICLE IAN DAVIDSON

42

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | April 2017

I

t started off as an innocent, cold Saturday in January project with my family. I packed my two kids up, and we found our

way to Home Depot to look at the organic seeds. It had been a few years since we'd planted a garden at our previous house, and they were excited to help. They picked out corn, tomatoes, herbs, beets, peppers and cucumbers. We went home and planted our pods in the hopes that in a week we'd have some little sprouts on our hands. This is where I've got to confess something—I did it backward. Usually, people have a garden and then they start their seeds. But with 72 little seeds and the hopes of my kids on the line, I figured it would produce more than enough pressure to ensure I had one in the yard by the time our little seeds were ready. A couple of Saturdays later, it was unseasonably warm and I decided to get to work. While we have a really flat yard, the only place that got the needed six to eight hours of sunlight was in the side yard of our house, which inconveniently slopes down and away, falling a couple of feet in elevation. Lucky me.

3 FREE Sessions Now offering Youth Fitness!

I set my level lines, got out my shovel and started digging. However, that didn't really solve my biggest challenge: the design of the actual bed. As my wife would attest, I'm particular to a fault. I like modern design and simple textures like wood, metal and concrete. I don't really want anything to look homemade or DIY, but I don't really have the talent to build something amazing or the money to hire out more skilled labor. Another trip to Home Depot gave me the exact inspiration I needed. By fluke, I walked down the construction aisle and noticed a few metal window wells. Usually, these go around basement windows, but I thought they’d make pretty nice end caps for a garden. After bringing some wood over, measuring the length and finding some galvanized bolts, I was able to lock in a simple design pretty quickly. Assembling the bed was actually pretty easy, even for someone that isn’t an engineer. The length of wood was uniform, so it didn’t even require much cutting. With a drill, a wrench and a little sweat, the bed came together in a few hours. A yard and a half of dirt later, the bed was finished with an entire month to spare.

the window wells (optional) I wanted the wood to be flush with the window wells, so I chose to bend them in, but

5

this isn’t required. To do this, I made grips out of wood and bent them backward.

Building the structure

Attach 2 x 8 x 8 treated boards to form the walls. This should require very little cutting since the wide of the board fits the 24-inch window wells and they should all be pretty uniform in length. Use the 2-inch galvanized bolts to attach the ends of the boards to the wings of the window wells. Cut the 1 x 4 x 8 board into six 16 inch pieces. Attach the six 16 inch pieces to the interior of the bed to reinforce the walls. One in the middle and one on each end need the metal window wells. Use the outdoor wood screws to attach these boards to each of the three pieces of the side wall, and drive one screw eye into the middle of each of the reinforcement boards. Using the turnbuckles and wire, attach the walls together with the screw eyes. Use the crescent wrench to tighten the turnbuckles and make sure the wire is pulled tight. This will ensure that your garden will keep its shape over the long haul.

Parting Thoughts

Apple Tart Topped with Salted Caramel Ice-Cream

ARTICLE EXECUTIVE CHEF ERIC CARTER PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

• 12-inch pie crusts

1. Heat oven to 400º F.

• 1⁄2 cup sugar

2. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and the flour in large bowl. Stir in apples. The sugar-flour mixture

• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 4 cups chopped peeled apples • 2 tablespoons sugar

will not all stick to the apples; that’s OK. 3. Spread the apple mixture uniformly from the center of the dough circle to within 2 inches of edge. Fold edge of dough over apple mixture; crimp edge of dough slightly.

• 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

4. Mix 2 tablespoons sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon; sprinkle over apples and dough.

• 1⁄2 teaspoon nutmeg

5. Cut 1 tablespoon butter into 5 or 6 small pieces; spread on top of the apples.

• 1 tablespoon butter

6. Bake 27 to 32 minutes or until crust is golden brown. 7. Cut into wedges. Serve warm drizzled with caramel topping.

If you listed your home today,

would you get its maximum value?

More than ever, it’s critical that buyers and sellers work closely with a real estate agent who has the experience and expertise to guide them. For Sellers, your expert real estate agent will know how to: • Set the right listing price – not underpricing your home and thereby “leave money on the table” • Price your home not so high that appraisers can’t support the price and the buyers fail to get the loan • Use a plan that creates excitement, brings all buyers in quickly, and yields a quick, high priced offer • Recognize buyers’ remorse, buyer preapprovals you can count on, and how to negotiate inspection concerns

If you’re unsure, talk to Frank. He’s Lee’s Summit’s expert in maximizing the value of your home.
