or as long as I can remember, I have always been a person who likes to come up with new ideas. I am a bit of a dreamer and a problem solver, and I constantly find myself thinking up new business startups, inventions or ways to make products better. I can’t help it, and I have a hard time turning it off, and often times I wait too long and someone else has the same idea and creates it first. (I’m still kicking myself about that Google thing. Ha!)

My brother is an entrepreneur, so I often times text him ideas of things he should do. Some are great ideas and some aren’t. He is a risk-taker and visionary but makes very smart decisions in the midst of just jumping and going for it. It has served him very well, and I admire him greatly for his adventurous and confident spirit. Throughout the years he has encouraged me to pursue some of my ideas, but the ones that have stuck with me have always been the ideas that I am personally connected to and have a passion towards. In our February issue, we wanted to share with you some of the local entrepreneurs and artists that started with a little idea and have turned that dream in to a reality. Whether it is a business owner, musician, artist or maker, each person featured took an idea and a chance and jumped. I admire the work of each person we had the privilege of interviewing this month, and their hard work, creativity and dedication to their trade is impressive and inspiring. We all have gifts and talents that are unique, and it’s never too late to explore those gifts and use them, whether it be with the world or with just those around us that we love. If you are sitting on an idea or dream, I want to encourage you to not give up on it. You never know what could come of it till you try.

In a recent acceptance speech, Ellerman credits his appreciation for community with his humble beginnings. He spoke movingly about how having a dependable support system has enabled him to acquire great accomplishments and that with the backing of his loving wife and a hardworking team, he has been able to give plentifully. A man of dedication, Ellerman has worked tirelessly in real estate since 1996 and currently is a senior marketing executive at Reece and Nichols. His assiduousness has earned him awards such as rookie of the year and rising star, and as his career has become more prosperous, a carefully orchestrated team of realtors have assisted him on his path to greatness. Ellerman praises this team for affording him the ability to make meaningful offerings to the Kansas City area through charity and volunteer work. He recognizes that with due diligence and high 24

achievement there comes a responsibility to the community he serves. Even with immense business obligations, he also makes a conscientious effort to devote his time to area youth because he believes this is an investment in the future. It is no surprise that Ellerman was honored as the recipient of The Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors Community Service Award (KCRARCSA) in December. In 2016 alone, he has donated well over $100,000 to many area organizations including Harvesters, a community food network ($10,000); St. Jude’s, a pediatric and research hospital ($46,000); Drumm Farm Center for Children, a housing program for foster care ($40,000); Hope Haven, which provides services for domestic abuse survivors ($43,095); and Rob Ellerman Team (RET) Scholarships, which awards high-achieving students ($3,000). His contributions mirror his dedication and connectedness to all stakeholders who have supported him through the years. In reflecting on receiving the esteemed KCRARCSA Ellerman states: "What a cool night. I had the honor of accepting the Kansas City Regional Association of Realtors Community Service Award. Thank you to my team, business partners, clients and all our realtor relationships. It is 100 percent what you all do that helps make a difference in our community. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Consistent with the mark of a person with integrity, Ellerman places much of his gratitude on the combined efforts of those around him. He explains this in discussing his professional philosophy which encompasses treating clients and agents as if they are “your lifeblood.” He believes that good business is cyclical and explained this by stating, "If you continue to run your business with your clients’ best interest in mind, you will maintain loyalty among your agents as well. One of my favorite accomplishments is the loyalty we have among agents. That's why we even created a program for our agents’ share in ownership of RET via profit-sharing. Take care of others and they will definitely take care of you." This philosophy has kept turnover rates down even within an industry where they are typically higher. It is evident that Ellerman has fostered a relationship of trust and reliability within his company, fully embracing the idea that one should be a reflection of what he desires. One of Ellerman’s favorite quotes is “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” This adage could not create a more accurate depiction of a person who works hard to strive for excellence and who serves others with the same enthusiasm. With each distinct coffee, I roast many samples to determine the optimal profile for that particular bean, meaning, for example, with a natural Ethiopian, I want to nuance the blueberry characteristics, and for a Sumatra, the earthy, spicy, chocolatey characteristics. Each coffee has a different density, different moisture content, and responds to the heat of

the roasting process differently, so we set our profiles and then record them with computer software, which allows us to roast each specific coffee with consistency every time.” They get green samples in from their importers, roast and cup, taste, and evaluate them, then select the coffees that impress their palate most. “We then can add our signature to the coffee by roasting the different beans in slightly nuanced ways that optimize the characteristics and flavors of each single origin bean. Then, that coffee makes its way to our bar, where we are pleased to serve you the best product we can,” he smiled. The future is brimming over for this coffee duo, as they now own Goat Hill, at 811 W. 17th Street, in the Westside of Kansas City. The space was formerly occupied by Little Freshie. This specific drink will continuously rotate through different recipes. Everything from the coffee and tonic water to espresso and ginger beer. Though it will change throughout the year, it will continue to be served in the Glencairn glass it is named after. These coffee guys are currently working with many likeminded people in the Kansas City area. Specifically, Colony Espresso and Beer, Hammer Hand in Liberty and The W in Lee’s Summit. This adventure began in a VERY unexpected way.

This adventure began in a very unexpected way. When their son was little, he had health problems that kept him up at night. This went on for two years and left Susan and Refe exhausted. They would wake up each morning and have nothing left to offer their older kids. So, one night, after putting the kids to bed, they came across a box of old dinosaur toys. Susan decided to set them up in the bathroom sink and give them the kids’ toothbrushes and figured it might give the kids something to smile about when they woke up. The next morning, their daughter burst into their room and pulled them out of bed. The dinosaurs had come to life, and she had caught them brushing their teeth! “Her reaction was so unexpected and priceless. That’s when we knew the dinosaurs would come to life again—and they did, for the entire month of November,” explains Refe.

They took pictures to share with friends and family and called the month-long event ‘Dinovember'. When the dinosaurs returned the next year, they posted an essay called Welcome to Dinovember as a sort of FAQ for friends and family. “When I logged in the next day, I discovered that two-million people had read the essay. It was syndicated by the Huffington Post, and the story was picked up by the Washington Post, Metro UK, and others. I started getting emails from literary agents and editors who wanted to talk about expanding the essay into a full-length photo book, which sent us in complete shock.” In fact, the Tuma’s have been surprised by every part of this experience. Susan and Refe are co-creators in every sense and work together on every step of the process. Refe started out doing most of the writing since that’s a big part of his background, and Susan took the lead early on in the photography department, but now there isn’t quite as much distinction—it’s almost entirely collaborative. “It’s more fun that way. We have different approaches, so one person’s idea is refined or informed by the other’s, and it brings out better work from both of us,” says Refe. For their upcoming book What the Dinosaurs Did at School, they photographed on location at several area elementary schools as well as the downtown branch of the Kansas City Public Library. They were even able to convince one of them to let them bring a commercial foam machine and pump dozens of 48

gallons of foam down a staircase. (If you want to know what the dinosaurs could possibly be doing with all that foam, you’ll have to get the book!) All of the photographs in What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night and What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night: A Very Messy Adventure were taken in the Tuma’s home. The ice avalanche in the first book? That was 100% real ice—about 750 pounds of it. The mud splattered all over their living room at the climax of Messy Adventure? All real. When asked to give advice to aspiring authors out there, the Tuma’s expressed the importance of just diving in. “If you want to be an author, don’t wait to be discovered—start telling stories now. Before Dinovember and What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night, Susan and I had been talking about writing children’s books together for nearly a decade. I had spent the previous two years writing and publishing short stories in small literary magazines just because I love to write,” says Rafe. Their third book, What the Dinosaurs Did at School will be published June 2017 and is available for preorder now.
