Cheers to our ladies

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. I am very lucky to be surrounded by so many empowering and giving women.  Wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives. They embrace us, they move us, they cheer for us, they mold us.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, we want to celebrate her! Inside you'll even find some of my favorite local gift ideas for Mom.… But it’s not just the biological mothers, but also the women in our lives who have been inspirations and key figures in our circle. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable. It takes a village sometimes...I see that often in my own neighborhood and circle of friends.

I have so many women who have mentored me, encouraged me and were role models to me...all my life and even to this very day. Recently, I have even been called to now pay it forward and help serve and support women on an even deeper level. One of those exciting new opportunities was through my It is Well with My Soul healing and health retreat, held last month at Wildwood Resort & Marina in Granville, TN. What a beautiful weekend we had cultivating love and hope!

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. Aren't we blessed with so many incredible options? That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Lebanon's women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to send a token of love and remind them how much you care about them.

What a Local Woman Heart Attack Survivor Wants Us to Teach Our Daughters HEART ATTACKS AT 32 14

The first time Jessica Biggs remembers someone talking to her about the symptoms of heart attacks in women, she was 32 — and having one herself.

Four heart attacks and six stents later, the Lebanon High School teacher speaks openly to other women about the realities of heart attacks for women, how they are different, and how to spot the warning signs. Heart disease poses a serious risk for women in the United States, yet the symptoms often are chalked up to other conditions, such as stress, anxiety or aging. Indeed, women have unique heart health needs best served by experts who specialize in caring for their hearts.

Jessica’s first heart attack symptoms continued on and off for three days before she sought medical attention. They began while she was away from her Tennessee home on a business trip. As she began driving back, she became so fatigued that she pulled over at a rest stop to take a nap before making her way home.

“I just pushed through it like you would a pulled muscle,” she said. “It didn’t cross my mind to go to the hospital.”

Symptoms appeared on and off for three days. She tried home remedies, including yoga, but sought medical attention when symptoms became more intense.

Over time, other heart attacks followed. Jessica finally found out why after being sent

to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Though it is a less common cause of heart attacks in women, Jessica still works to educate women on the warning signs.

She wants to help empower more women to become active in their heart health, ask their healthcare providers about their potential risks, and understand how they can prevent heart disease and heart attacks.

Jessica’s experiences helped her realize the importance of women listening to their own bodies, advocating for the care they need and being proactive with their heart health.

She wants to help other women understand this better – and to teach their daughters: “Don’t play around with your health. Listen to your body. If you’re hurting in your chest, it doesn’t always mean it’s anxiety. If you get to the hospital and they tell you nothing’s wrong, better safe than sorry.”

Vanderbilt Women’s Heart Center

Vanderbilt Health offers a specialized program tailored to women’s heart health needs, spanning adolescence and the childbearing years through menopause. Women’s Heart Center experts work together to treat heart disease with the special needs of women in mind. Visit VanderbiltHealth.com/WomensHeart for more information.

Female Owned LEBANON’S FLORIST

ARTIST’S PALETTE | LOCAL SERVICES 20

Seeds Planted 70 Years Ago Still Bloom Today

PHOTOGRAPHY

Tiffany may have started out small, literally making floral wedding bouquets for her Barbies, but as a legacy florist owner, her business is anything but micro now.

“I was raised around this flower shop,” explained Tiffany Koelliker of Henderson's Florist, “My cousin and I would play at the shop during the summers and that’s when my love for the florist began.”

CONTINUED > 21 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/LEBANONTN MAY 2024

She officially began working at Henderson's Florist 27 years ago at age 14 and has been the proud owner for the last six years.

“I would work after school, weekends, summers – weddings have always been my favorite,” she says.

Henderson's Florist was founded 70 years ago, with Tiffany being the fourth owner in a line of all female entrepreneurs. Founded by Carrie Henderson in 1954, Tiffany explained that she admired Carrie for her tenacity as a woman business owner in the 50s, a rarity in that generation.

“No one loves your success and well-being like your family; I am blessed to get to work with them all and have a great time,” she says, “My family and our community have helped me since I bought the business. Through renovations, the pandemic, the tornado and flood, my team, my mom, my aunts and my sister have been working next to me.”

“People often don’t see that a flower shop is so much more than playing with flowers, it’s a very emotionally driven business, we form relationships with our customers on both their happiest and often saddest days,” Tiffany says, “A new job, new baby, prom, weddings, anniversaries, first dates, all the way to losing a pet, loss of loved ones, and funeral planning. We take every one of your memories personally when creating arrangements and feel blessed to be part of it all.”

Tiffany says her favorite flower is the Tulip and one of her most treasured, often unknown jobs, is decorating private homes year round and for the holidays! She says her favorite quote is, “Darling, butterflies are not born with wings; be patient with your transformation," by C.M. Winter.

ALONG WITH BEING THE CURRENT FIRST LADY OF LEBANON, WIFE TO MAYOR RICK BELL, TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT PROJECTS IN WILSON COUNTY.

At the end of last year, I made the decision to sell my business of 11 years, it was a business that I had poured much of my heart and time into but felt the pull to lighten the load and at the same time to dream new dreams.  It was a tough decision but one I haven’t looked back on.  For years I had a vision of a home decor, gift and event bridal registry store.  Growing up in Lebanon I can remember shopping at “The Ivy Wreath” and “Cox’s” so part of my vision was to give my clients a taste of the past, so in October 2022

Coco & Lou Home was born.  It’s a little of all the things I dreamed of and this spring we are launching clothing.

In 2021, I joined an organization in Davidson County, 100 Women Who Care Greater Nashville (100WWCGWC).  The concept is you get at least 100 Women a quarter to commit to giving $100.  A non-profit is selected each quarter and that charity receives a minimum of $10,000.  I’m proud to say since our first meeting in January 2023, 100WWCGWC members have given over $103,000 to five non-profits locally!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS

ABOUT LEBANON/WILSON COUNTY?

What’s not to love about living here? Lebanon people are so good and giving. Time and time again I’ve seen our town show up for others.  Whether it’s Friday night lights or a tornado, our town has heart.  We are fierce to love and support.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS IN

LEBANON!

Running my practice as an Edward Jones Financial Advisor has helped me relate and work well with fellow small business owners and entrepreneurs. After navigating a few challenges on my life path, I also understand the needs of women in transition from divorce, loss of a spouse, or a late-life career change, including retirement. We partner together to organize and gain control of their finances, achieve peace of mind by leaving a legacy for their loved ones, and increase fulfillment through the pursuit and accomplishment of their life’s purpose.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT LIVING HERE?

I love that Lebanon/Wilson County is a very interconnected community of great people. As an active member of the community, I have the privilege of serving on the board of the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, the Lebanon Noon Rotary Club, and Compassionate Hands. I value the relationships I’ve built over time, and I’m grateful for the many opportunities I get to help serve and positively impact our city and county.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL EVENT?

I look forward to the Sherry’s Run 5K each year. I’ve organized a team of ladies for the event the past couple of years,  walking in honor of my late grandmother and Blue Star Sister who both lost their battles with cancer.

FAVORITE QUOTE?

“He who dares not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose.” Anne Bronte

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT LEBANON/WILSON

My two favorite things are not two specific things. They are the collective efforts embracing two magnificently unique and broad views.

Lebanon and Wilson County offer four glorious seasons, offering a tapestry of beautiful landscapes. The winters are mild here. Our fall foliage has become a world-renowned sensation, with bright reds, oranges, and yellows coating the leaves. Daffodils, tulips, and snowdrops remind us spring is on its way. We go fishing, swimming, paddleboarding, or kayaking creeks and rivers in the summer.

Lebanon/Wilson County offers the extent to which you can choose to raise your family or live—a high quality of life. One can envelop the rural hills, revealing stunning vistas, creeks, and a few remaining country roads, or the comforts and luxuries of suburban life.

The continued multilateral strategic planning has improved the community hospitals and clinics, the delicious restaurant options, and offer shoppers a paradise. The dedication to education is steadfast, offering families public school, private school, homeschooling, or university.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL EVENT?

I want to think my favorite local event has not happened yet.

Over the past 30-plus years, I have had the honor of helping with many magnificent events here, and this community has many more to come.

SOURDOUGH BREAD

For an added health benefit, try this probiotic-rich sourdough bread known for being easy to digest and a healthier gut-friendly option. To make sourdough bread, you will need a starter which can take anywhere from 7-14 days. To make your own, mix flour and water together in a jar and feed the starter each day until ready. There are many sourdough starter recipes online.

SOURDOUGH STARTER INGREDIENTS:

• 2 teaspoons sourdough starter

• 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

• 5 teaspoons water

DOUGH INGREDIENTS:

• ¼ cup active sourdough starter

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 4 cups flour

INSTRUCTIONS:

Twelve hours before you plan to mix the dough, add the ingredients to make ¼ cup of active sourdough starter. Stir and cover and let the starter rise. The starter is ready when it has doubled in size and there are bubbles on the surface and sides.

To make the dough, add ¼ cup sourdough starter and 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of water and stir. Next, add 4 cups plus 2 tablespoons of flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Use a spatula to work the ingredients together until there are no more dry ingredients in the bowl. Wet your hand with a little water to prevent sticking, and pick up the dough on one side of the bowl and stretch it up and over itself. Turn the bowl a quarter turn and repeat this step until you have turned the bowl a full circle. Cover the bowl and let the dough sit for 30 minutes. Repeat the folding process one more time. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise on your counter for 8-10 hours.

Next, on a lightly floured surface, shape the dough into a ball by pulling the dough into the middle of itself. Turn the ball over so the seam is down. Use your hands to gently pull and cup the dough until it forms a tight skin. Place the dough on parchment paper and transfer the paper and dough to a medium sized bowl. Cover the bowl and let it rise for 2 hours.

Preheat the oven to 450°F. Score the top of dough with a sharp knife. Use the parchment paper to lift the dough up and transfer to a dutch oven. Place the lid on and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 30 minutes or until golden brown.
