LIFESTYLE LETTER
Here’s to the New Year! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. For me, it always feels good to hibernate a bit, reflect on things and try and align myself once again. I am a true believer in looking back to help push me forward. Kind of like the bow and arrow analogy... An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward first. When life is dragging you down with difficulties, rest assured it's going to launch you into something greater. So just focus and keep aiming. I like to replay my year and learn from it...what went well, what can I improve upon, and what areas need adjustments. I always love buying a new calendar planning for the New Year ahead. We approached this issue with inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health by highlighting a few of our favorite health and wellness businesses in town. I have tried over the past few years to truly set into motion some better health practices. A few of my favorites I do daily are incorporating stretching, a quiet time for prayer and at least 15-20 minutes of some type of exercise. Most recently, I am enjoying learning Pilates at Central Star Pilates at the Mill. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable and so good for the soul. Even if it's just a small day trip to reset and unplug. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym (two of my favorite in town are Sports Village and Re:Move Training) AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at J. Clayborn's Bakery. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you and a beautiful year ahead! Happy New Year Lebanon! 1-7: Empower Me Dice & Dream Casino Night at Capitol Theatre on November 9th was a huge success. Guests were surprised by the announcement of an anonymous $1 million gift, totaling $3.5m in funds raised for their new permanent facility. This marked enough to fund Phase One of the project which includes a 10,000 square foot building, soccer field and bocce court. Construction will start in early this year. January and Lindsey were in the house for this exciting unveiling.

“Dream however big you want to and set goals for yourself.” "Every kid has that dream of playing football, really any sport you play, you want to be like whoever is the best," says hometown hero Colton Dowell, now truly living out his dream right around the corner from the community that calls him their own. Growing up in Lebanon, Colton's father Chris was our beloved fire chief, and his mother Tracy spent 10 years working in the medical field before deciding to pursue her dream of becoming an educator. It's no surprise the Tennessee Titans wide receiver continued the family legacy of dedication, hard work and commitment to our Wilson County community. Colton says when he was younger he wanted to be like Santonio Holmes when he played for the Steelers, but considered that a child’s dream. He explained that it wasn't until his third year in college that something flipped on for him
to believe, “Man, I can really do this as a career," and his dad solidified his vision when he told him he saw it too. We caught up with Colton to share how growing up in Lebanon influenced his career now that he's been drafted to the NFL.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT GROWING UP IN LEBANON?
One, there are so many good food spots that I like. One of my favorites is Painturo’s – Pizza, an Italian place, they have pasta and everything you could want. Also, another pizza place, but I like David’s Pizza. If you ever find yourself in Lebanon, go to David’s, get you a sausage and pepperoni. Painturo’s has more variety. Their pizza’s good but their pasta is the way to go. Their breadsticks are crazy. If you just want pizza, I like David’s. I might get in trouble for that one. CONTINUED >

More importantly, it’s such a close-knit community even though it’s not on the small side. I think there are around 50,000 people who live in Lebanon, but it seems like you know everybody. If you’re ever in trouble or you’re ever in a sticky situation, there’s somebody always around that you can holler at who will help you. It’s a very supportive community.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE MODELS!
Definitely my dad, my brother, my mom are people I look up to. Outside of family, I’d definitely say one of my high school coaches, he coaches at Green Hill, Coach (Josh) Crouch. He helped me a lot as a player because he was that young coach on the staff, and Coach (Zac) White too. He always had energy and you really felt like he understood what our athletes were going through. Seeing him have so much success this early in his coaching career pushes me to not be the one to fall behind. I’m a competitive guy, I like to chase after people, chase after goals. And I never want to let anyone be more successful than me, but not in a toxic sense. He just pushes me to become a better person and a better leader.
WHAT PASSION PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON THAT ARE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART?
I’m trying to build up my influence and really dive into the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) whenever I have more time on my hands. I’m really passionate about helping kids and young adults not experience the same problems I went through spiritually.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG ATHLETES?
Dream however big you want to and set goals for yourself. A coach from when I was getting recruited to Chattanooga, Coach Bailey, told me whenever you set your goals, you set them high because nine times out of ten, you’re going to reach them. Going from there to UT Martin, I set a goal that I want to be remembered around here, I want to break records, I want to be in the record book, and I did it. I always had that thought in the back of my head: If you want to set your goals however high you want, however high they may be, you’re going to hit them if you work hard enough. Hard work is paramount in being an athlete. CONTINUED >

WHAT DO YOU SEE IN THE FUTURE?
Being right here, still playing. By the grace of God, finishing out my career. Really diving into the Fellowship of Christian Athletes program. If I can’t work full time with FCA, I’d like to become a teacher and minister. I'll help coach football or do whatever I can to support young adults because they’re the ones who need it the most right now. This world is a crazy place. You never know how impressionable you are until you get older, and you realize where all your habits came from. Having mentors, support – that helps. In five to ten years, I’ll be thirty-something, I’d like to have my family started, have a house somewhere in Lebanon that I can call home base, and be stable enough to do what I’m passionate about without having to worry about money or availability.

No one likes being sick. When your health does fail you, it’s nice to have a pharmacy that is there for you and at Buckeye Drugs that is the goal of owner/pharmacist, Dr. Cory McDonald. He knows that a little compassion and a lot of commitment is what it takes to serve the community of Wilson County and this passion has driven him for more than 25 years. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2023, Buckeye Drugs opened on April 27, 1973, and has remained in the same location at 315 North Cumberland Street since. Cory credits the shop’s continued success to the numerous generational customers who continue coming back. This unwavering loyalty to Buckeye Drugs, coupled with new customers has truly blessed Buckeye Drugs more than the McDonald’s could have ever imagined.
Cory’s family roots of service run deep in middle Tennessee, growing up down the road in Smith County with his father, Dr. David McDonald, a dentist in Carthage for 33 years, and here in Lebanon with his mother, Lisa Tuggle, a beloved special education teacher in Wilson County for 27 years. He also says his grandmother Lois is the greatest person he has ever known, and watching them all have such an impact on peoples’ lives inspired him to try and do the same.
Ultimately, it was his uncle, Dr. Steve Wilmore, the owner of Smith County Drug Center in Carthage, who gave him the direction he was looking for when he began working for him as a junior in high school. Cory says that’s where he learned firsthand what it takes to serve others well in a small town, things he would later implement at Buckeye Drugs. Going on to college at the University of Tennessee, he recalls meeting a beautiful Wilson County girl named Megan who became his wife in 2006, moving to Atlanta as Cory attended pharmacy school at Mercer University College of Pharmacy, before heading back to middle TN as a pharmacist at Rite Aid. One cold day in 2012, Cory was in Lebanon having his car serviced and took the opportunity to connect with Dr. John Turner, the former owner of Buckeye, becoming a fill-in pharmacist until the doors opened for him to purchase Buckeye Drugs in 2018. Cory says he gained a wealth of knowledge from Dr. Turner and he still calls Dr. Turner Boss Man to this day. Cory and Megan decided to relocate their family to Lebanon in August of 2022 and says the community has welcomed his family with open arms, which they are extremely grateful for. Buckeye Drugs has won best pharmacy in Wilson County several years and in 2022 was a top three finalist for the best pharmacy in Middle Tennessee. Some of the services they provide are free delivery,

medication packaging, diabetic counseling, and an array of vaccinations with no appointments needed. When you add in durable medical equipment for both rental and purchase it makes Buckeye Drugs a one stop shop when your health is not at its peak. While Cory manages the pharmacy, Megan keeps the gift shop boutique filled with unique items such as baby gifts, bereavement items, Swan Creek Candles, and curated seasonal decor. The family takes pride in hiring competent and friendly staff to ensure you are greeted and served from the first step through the doors. Cory says perhaps the most important part of the success of Buckeye Drugs is how it has allowed them to give back to the community of Wilson County. He says, John 13:35 reads, By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another; Jesus taught us to have compassion for everyone and this is what drives Cory daily. Buckeye Drugs proudly supports Sherry’s Run, Compassionate Hands, Empower Me along with many other organizations and sports teams. As both his father and his uncle taught him from an early age, you take care of the community and the community will take care of you. Be on the lookout for a ground-breaking ceremony to begin the building of a new, modern, state of the art pharmacy, but don’t worry, you won’t have to travel far to the new location as they have purchased an adjacent lot and are making preparations for building a new, more convenient Buckeye Drugs, offering more space, a larger gift shop, and most importantly a new drive-through window. They hope to complete this project over the next year.

Start the new year off right, taking care of your whole body with Well Health. Beyond a classic pop and go chiropractic office, you will find that Dr. Mike Shaub and his team are passionate about guiding patients through nutrition, attention to your nervous system and full body alignment. The Well Health and Chiropractic franchise was created by Dr. Shaub’s friend and colleague Dr. Ben Follas in 2016, however, he has been a fixture in Middle Tennessee since 2010 when he opened his first private practice in Hermitage 13 years ago. Since then he has opened clinics in Cookeville and now Lebanon. “I learned how food is medicine and how the art and science of chiropractic has the ability to change and save lives at Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2009,” Dr. Shaub explained, “I always say I didn’t find chiropractic, it found me, with all the glory and thanks to my savior Jesus Christ for all He is doing and yet to do in my life and this community.” The Well offices offer full spine and extremity adjusting, combined with corrective care, with the goal of leading to maintenance care throughout a patient’s lifetime.
“We have a saying in my offices that we adjust womb to tomb, because anyone and everyone can benefit from chiropractic,” he says, “We all have nervous systems and you need to keep it healthy for the rest of your life. Contrary to most beliefs, we are nervous system doctors and not bone doctors and though we look at bones through high frequency digital x-rays and specialize in moving bones back into alignment, we do so to keep pressure off the nerves. Since the nerves are information highways from the brain to the organs, cells, and tissues, that highway stays clear of traffic jams, aka pinched nerves, then the patient gets well!” Dr. Shaub says supporting proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices for patients is also paramount in their care, hosting classes in house and online on topics like how to reverse diabetes, heart disease, and detoxing, just to name a few. “Our nutritional background also allows us to provide top shelf supplementation through Designs for Health products, using tools like Zyto scans to test for insufficiencies and deficiencies to help support the body’s own ability to heal,” he explained. “My focus has been and always will be the health of my community, and in order to help people reach their God-given potential, they must know the truth about how their bodies were designed to work,” he says, “Now that I have five other chiropractors on my team and am part of a network of like-minded chiropractors, I get to coach and mentor them to also lead their families, teams, and communities with the same servant mentality I’ve been using for all these years; if we are just great chiropractors and not great fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, then we’ve missed the mark.” Dr. Shaub says his wife is the real CEO, and credits his teams with Executive Manager Jeremy Mason at the helm for his ability to continue to expand his practice, a legacy he is proud to leave to his five daughters someday.

THE SKIN LAB ARTICLE BY NIKI GREEN, LME MEDICAL AESTHETICIAN
New Year Tips for Better Skin Health During the Winter Season The winter season can bring on skin dehydration with cold temperatures, wind and increased use of ambient heat ventilation systems in our work, vehicles and homes. Paired with less sun exposure that we need to boost immune systems, support cardiovascular and skeletal system health, and even help with mood stabilization, extra care is needed to feel our best. Here are a few ways to stay balanced through the winter: • A facial series every 30 days throughout the winter season can be very beneficial to add hydration back in to dull, dry skin. • Add a hydrating mask to your home regimen. After cleansing and patting dry, apply a hydrating mask and let sit. Following removal, finish with antioxidants, moisture, and protecting SPF. • Light-emitting diode (LED) light therapy has many positive effects. Red light therapy is anti-inflammatory, helps to produce collagen, aids in the regeneration of healthy skin cells, and aids in the anti-aging process. It’s been known to mimic some positive attributes that correlate with direct sunlight. At The Skin Lab, an Aesthetic Med Spa, one of our most popular facial series options in the winter is the Hydro Oxygen Facial. This treatment provides a surge of hydration, a beautiful resurface, and a great deal of anti-aging. Another popular option is a hydrating mask, Hyla 3-D, from Jan Marini from our clinical/medical grade line. With hyaluronic acid and anti-aging moisturizer, this mask leaves the skin lifted, plumped and hydrated. LED light therapy is a fantastic fit for a great many number of issues including dullness and dehydration. Red light therapy is also a wonderful anti-aging mechanism. The Skin Lab was established in 2020 to bring these services to Wilson County, located in the heart of Lebanon, TN with a team of medical aestheticians ready to correct your dry, dull, and other winter skin issues. Visit lovetheskinlab.com for more info and to book.

Start your day with a nutritious and vitamin-packed breakfast. Smoothie bowls are a great way to add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day.
