Hello Darlin!

April 2023 PUBLISHER

January Alexander | january.alexander@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Lindsey Hickman | lindsey.hickman@citylifestyle.com

Well...or maybe as Conway would say, Hello Leb'nun! I'm January Alexander, the publisher and co-owner of this beautiful magazine you are holding within your hands. Without further ado...it's finally show time and I couldn't be more excited to launch our very first issue to you! Some of you may already know me from my other local, small business of 16 years, J. Alexander Home. I'm a small town girl who loves cheering on her community, it's people and businesses. Growing up with my Mom being an entrepreneur, I shadowed hard work, determination and a passion for people. I have always enjoyed learning about the people, places and things to do within my community. With a background in media, marketing and design, this position couldn't fit me better. I am here to serve you...to cheer you on...to share incredible stories...to highlight what a beautiful town we have...and place my heart and soul into this project and platform for you. I hope to be a ray of light, a great resource for all the things Lebanon and to provide content you will be eager to seek each month...kind of the same way I feel waiting for the next episode of Yellowstone to come on at our house. Lol! We have so many exciting plans and events coming this year! I am looking forward to bringing you locally, curated content each month full of surprises and impressive insight. This community is AMAZING and full of so many unique and hidden treasures...no wonder so many people are moving here! I look forward to serving you and seeing you around town. Ok...back to the magazine in your hands, I hope you enjoy every word. My team and I have worked very hard to get here and I am so excited for you to read it cover to cover. From stunning home designs, to where to find the best food in town, to local hot spots and even day trips you should try...we will be sure to craft the best for you to enjoy and learn about each month. Ok Lebanon...it's time to turn the page and explore what our city has to offer! Enjoy and stay tuned for our May issue celebrating the Women of Lebanon! XoXo-January

Reducing formality, clean lines, eat-in kitchens, and a mix of modern and traditional are just a few of the current home trends Stewart and his team at Stewart Knowles Construction (SKC) are seeing desired with custom builds right now. Unique is something SKC boasts in every home they create, and this Roger Lane home does not fall short. “Our homes have every detail hand picked with our designer,” says Stewart, “From custom blended paint, fixtures, and tile exclusive to SKC, we want every home to feel custom and curated. For this

project, we redesigned a popular plan that we thought needed a more transitional and modern exterior.” Stewart has been a licensed contractor since 2006, and is an 11th generation Wilson Countian, so although they do build outside of Wilson County, here is where his heart truly is, and where he is proud to pour his work into. “This is home, we're local, you can't throw a rock and not hit someone I'm related to,” he says. “Nearly all of our vendors are local. We buy lumber, roofing, doors, paint,

“Many of our customers are choosing to move from ornate trim and moldings and opting for simplicity and informality; shedding the formal dining rooms in place of larger eat-in kitchens.”

cabinets, it keeps the money and resources hyperlocal,” he shared, “I enjoy driving by dozens of our homes on my daily commute. I see our customers at school functions, church, and restaurants, and some have even become part of our team. We build outside of Wilson County, but building in your hometown is something special.” Having an experienced builder may help homeowners keep from overlooking details, especially when considering a forever home. Stewart says there are a few things to consider when aging in place. “If this home is your last stop, make sure it's functional for every season of life. When designing someones forever home, we reduce or eliminate steps, recess the shower floor, and finally make sure hallways and rooms are adequately sized,” he explained, “Plan for

the kids to leave, and plan for their return by creating functional zones that will be used by guests later.

SKC SAYS If the idea of building a custom home feels too daunting, SKC has a selection of stunning inventory of move-in ready homes like this one available to choose from throughout Wilson County.

Thoughtful curation keeps you falling in love with this home.

Contrasting island and unique cabinets, along with one of a kind fixtures sets SKC homes apart.

Home Brew to Hot Spot Tenn Lakes Brewing Company makes Lebanon home ARTICLE BY LINDSEY HICKMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELSI CARTER

Choosing Lebanon was the only thing that made sense to owners Nic Morris and Rob Eisenlohr when they moved their home brewing operation to a brick and mortar this past year. What started out with a home-brewing kit gifted to Morris by his wife in 2016, then Eisenlohr joining him in their brewing journey in 2019, has turned into a 10

barrel system with 10 different styles on tap in this cool local hot spot called Tenn Lakes Brewing Company. “We are currently brewing different styles to figure out what Lebanon wants to buy,” says Morris, “Since we are pioneers to craft beer in Wilson County, we are treading an unknown path. We are very excited to bring the community what they want to consume.” CONTINUED >

“Since we are pioneers to craft beer in Wilson County, we are treading an unknown path, excited to bring the community the beer they want to consume.”

Already voted reader's choice ‘Best of Wilson County,’ the guys say the team at Tenn Lakes Brewing is really honored to be recognized. “We are happy to receive positive feedback for our efforts in bringing Lebanon great food and beer!” they explained, “We like to have fun and provide entertainment for our customers and we are constantly trying to come up with ideas to make the customer experience memorable at our brewery.” One fun thing Tenn Lakes likes to do is team up with other passionate brewers to create collaboration beers. “A collab with another brewery entails deciding on a recipe and executing the brew together,” Morris told us about their current collab, “Wilco Brewery is the idea of a local home brewer here in Lebanon, owned by Stuart Ruis. He assisted us in brewing a West Coast IPA named West Main IPA that we are now serving.” Currently their most popular brew is called Cloudy With A Chance of Blonde. This American blonde ale recipe has a balance between hops and malt blends that results is a simple light-bodied taste that has a pale malt sweetness and a bread or biscuit flavor. And when asked his favorite way to enjoy beer, Morris says on tap is the way to go. "Personally I love drinking

draft beer, I get a sense of freshness that is just missed in a bottle or can," he says. Tenn Lakes already offers live music, sports screens, games, trivia nights and a sharable bar food menu, but what would beer be without pizza, and with yet another collaboration, that's just what they recently added to give their customers. “We have a great partnership with Prince Street Pizza and Pub in Gallatin, and now you’ll be able to get their pizza here,” they say, “Our pizza menu and in-house made beer, is the perfect combination. We look forward to serving Lebanon and the rest of Wilson County!” And serving they are doing. Not only can you order menu items such as Pepperoni Puffs, Totchos, and The Swine Apple pie in house, Tenn Lakes Brewing Company food is available on Doordash, with delivery right to your front door. SMALL TOWN TO SMALL SCREEN Meet Brooke and Brice “I’m still a full time pharmaceutical rep in Nashville,” explained Brooke, while Brice is a dentist who specializes in orthodontics. It was their passion for design that led them to opening an award winning, adult orthodontic practice in 2019. “I actually opened my own practice at the very end of 2019, and you can imagine what that looked like right at the beginning of Covid,” Brice told us, but it didn’t take long to catch notoriety because of its design and concept. “My practice is really unique, I try to push the envelope with everything I do,” Brice explained, “it’s an adult only practice, which is crazy, but what we wanted was a place adults can go to that doesn’t have dolphins on the wall and feel like a place for kids. This is a very good way to break down those boundaries and give them a place that is luxurious and mature.” Brooke says, “We feel like with our generation, so many parents paid for braces for their kids, but didn’t do it for themselves. Or for other people whose teeth have moved and shifted,

Lebanon locals balance careers, television and marriage. If you ask Brooke and Brice, no matter where big dreams take them, Lebanon will always be home. From the story of how they met, to their friendships and business, Wilson County is where it all began for them. And although their television show, Making Modern, airs on big networks like Magnolia and HBO, their full-time careers are still local, and might not be what you would expect.

“They say if you can stay married while you’re building a house, you’re strong, but for us, we band together and it makes it so we can get a lot done. “

Inside Scoop: Season 3 of Making Modern is coming soon, this summer 2023.

it’s time for those people to have somewhere to go and feel comfortable and not have to sit in little bitty chairs. It’s a really fun concept.”

SO HOW DID THEY END UP ON TV? “In 2016 we were building our dream house, but unfortunately, to the builder, he was just building another house,” Brice says, “So in the process we parted ways with the contractor and Brooke took a lot of that on to finish it.” “We were both creative and always have been, I have always taken things apart and tried to find a new way to use the pieces,” says Brooke, “But it was that unfortunate event with our home builder that pushed us to take things into our own hands. Once it was finished, that's how the show happened.” Their own projects led to helping neighbors tiling kitchens, bathrooms, and creating other designs, with Brooke eventually earning her general contractor license. “People used to tell us all the time, ya’ll need a tv show, you would make a great home show, and one day a friend of a friend was a tv producer whose interest was piqued. We filmed a three minute sizzle, which is actually about eight hours of filming content that is shrunk down to a show pitch, and we figured nothing would come from it,” they said. “Neither of us had any big desire to be on television, so after we CONTINUED >

filmed the pitch, we moved on with our lives and were surprised months later to get a call that four networks were interested in our show. Most of the time it takes 10 years to get picked, but Magnolia paid for us to shoot the pilot.” For Brice, all of these things are passions, whether it's giving people beautiful smiles, or designing things, he believes there will always be a place in his life to balance them all. But because Brooke juggles a lot between her career, contractor projects, and the show, she may eventually make some choices on where she goes from here. But one thing they are sure of, is their marriage will always come first. “We just pray the right doors open at the right time, and when they close we move on to the next thing in our lives,” says Brooke, “We are the show hosts, but we are also in the trenches, so when the camera goes away on film, we are still the ones working. They say if you stay can married while you’re building a house, you’re strong, but for us, we band together, team up, and it makes it so we can get a lot done. And at the end of the day the only thing that is important to us is that our marriage is strong.” Want to book Brooke and Brice for a project and maybe a chance to be on their show? Although their waitlist is long, you can visit deepsouthmodern.co, brookeandbrice.com, or social media to submit your design requests. Watch for their third season to debut later this Summer.

Sleep Inside, Outside 4 Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars

It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience. For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique

opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors. Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.

Photography by Amangiri, USA

Amangiri, Utah In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus. CONTINUED >

Hacienda Na Xamena, Ibiza The Spanish island Ibiza boasts lush pine forests, hidden calas (cove beaches) and Hacienda Na Xamena, a resort suspended on a cliff 600 feet above the Mediterranean. Guests flock to its spa for the eight saltwater thalassotherapy (seawater as a form of therapy) lagoons, which are linked together with waterfalls. Swim to the edge of the pool and drink in the sweeping sea vistas. Photography Hacienda Na Xamena, Ibiza ©

Photography by Pacuare Lodge

Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.
