LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter from the Editor I have always been a creative person. From a very young age, I discovered that I had an immense love for music. It started with piano, and as I got older, I moved to the guitar. I have always played by ear and picked it up really easily. It just clicked with me and always came so naturally. While everyone else in my family was geared more towards sports, I always gravitated toward creative outlets like music, dance, and writing. I have always had a vivid imagination and could easily get lost in storytelling, writing, and dreaming up all sorts of things. When I became an adult, I realized I could use that creative energy in my career. First, as a classroom teacher, I was able to bring creativity into my work by writing themed curriculum and creating integrative units that made learning interactive and engaging. I began freelance writing for a few publications and eventually found a way to channel my love of creating and writing into becoming the editor of this magazine, a role I have had the privilege of holding for the past decade. So much of what I do allows me to use that creativity that fills me up. Whether I am working with business owners to tell their stories to our readers or collaborating with my photographer on styled photoshoots for our national content, I get to create something unique. One of my favorite things about being part of this publication all these years has been the people I have had the pleasure of meeting and learning about. We have such a vibrant city, full of businesses and people who reflect that Midwestern charm while also showcasing creativity, innovation, and a genuine passion for what they do. We have had the privilege of bringing you stories of people in our community who are creating, dreaming, and inspiring us all. Whether it is a James Beard pastry chef like Megan Garrelts, who had the courage to open her own bakery, Cornflower Baked Goods; an architect like David Manica, who has designed unique bars in Kansas City after being inspired by international travel and the opportunity to experience some of the best restaurants and bars in the world; or a father and visionary like James Arkell and Lamar Hunt Jr., who are bringing an entire ultra-accessible amusement park and entertainment center to our city, each story reminds me just how much creativity and vision exists right here in our community. Those are just a few of the many talented individuals I have had the privilege of sharing with you over the years. When I think back on all of the people that we have been able to interview and learn more about, I am reminded just how much creativity and passion exists right here in our city. In our Style issue, we are honored to share the stories of designers, stylists, creatives, and business owners who use their ingenuity, talent, and vision to bring their ideas to life. Each of them has found a way to turn what they love into something meaningful that they can share with our city. That is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. I love being able to share the stories behind the people and businesses that make Kansas City what it is, and to give our readers a glimpse into the creativity and hard work that goes into bringing their ideas to life. CLAIRVAUX’S GUIDE TO FALL STYLE Joni Johnson, owner

20

T R E N D SE T T E R | SHO P P IN G

Fall fashion is stepping into the spotlight this season with rich color, striking textures and a renewed sense of confidence. According to Clairvaux owner Joni Johnson, the season invites women to embrace pieces that feel personal while building a wardrobe that lasts well beyond a single trend cycle. “Fashion is embracing a more expressive, maximalist point of view,” Johnson says. “This season is all about having fun with fashion, mixing unexpected colors, layering textures and experimenting with proportions.” Look for saturated shades including cobalt blue, fire-engine red and burgundy, along with zebra prints, sporty details and textured fabrics that bring fresh energy to everyday dressing. That balance of timeless style and current trends has shaped Clairvaux since the boutique opened six years ago. “We’ve always described Clairvaux as Parisian chic meets California cool,” Johnson says. “Our philosophy is to curate

timeless wardrobe staples you’ll wear for years, paired with trend-forward pieces that keep your style feeling fresh and modern.” Inside the boutique, shoppers will discover tailored essentials, statement accessories and carefully selected seasonal collections. Just as memorable is the shopping experience itself. Because Clairvaux’s stylists do not work on commission, every appointment centers on understanding each client’s lifestyle and helping them find pieces they’ll genuinely love wearing. That personalized guidance is backed by experience. Clairvaux’s team regularly wears the collections themselves and dresses thousands of women each year, giving them firsthand knowledge of what fits beautifully, feels comfortable and becomes a wardrobe favorite. “We always start by listening to what our clients need,” Johnson says. “We also encourage them to step outside their comfort zone.”

“THIS SEASON IS ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN WITH FASHION, MIXING UNEXPECTED COLORS, LAYERING TEXTURES AND EXPERIMENTING WITH PROPORTIONS.”

Quality has long been a hallmark of the boutique. Johnson travels extensively to discover distinctive collections from around the world, searching for exceptional craftsmanship, flattering fits and fabrics that feel as beautiful as they look. “I ask myself a simple question: Would I be excited to wear this?” she says. “Every piece has to earn its place. It needs exceptional fabrication, a flattering fit and thoughtful design.”

For anyone looking to refresh a closet this fall, Johnson recommends making a few thoughtful additions rather than replacing everything. A beautifully tailored jacket, a versatile neutral trouser or a statement accessory can instantly give familiar outfits a fresh perspective. “My philosophy has always been fewer, better pieces,” she says. “Build a wardrobe with quality, versatile essentials, and you’ll get so much more wear and enjoyment out of everything you own.” This fall is especially meaningful as Clairvaux celebrates its sixth anniversary. To mark the milestone, the boutique is introducing several new designers, bringing thoughtfully curated collections to the Kansas City market for the first time. With fresh arrivals throughout the season and an experienced styling team ready to help, fall is an exciting time to visit Clairvaux. From timeless wardrobe staples to standout statement pieces, the boutique continues to offer an elevated shopping experience centered on quality, personal style and helping every client feel confident in what they wear. Happy shopping!

A home should reflect the way people live, gather and create memories. For nearly seven decades, Koehler Building has brought that philosophy to life through custom homes that combine timeless craftsmanship, thoughtful design and environments created around the way families live. The Artisan showcases that commitment through elevated finishes and intentional architecture designed for both everyday living and unforgettable entertaining. Family-owned and operated since 1957, Koehler Building has been building homes for three generations with a focus on quality craftsmanship, innovative design and personalized details. With more than 2,000 completed homes and over 40 awards, the company has earned a reputation for creating homes that are as functional as they are distinctive. Featured in this year's Parade of Homes, The Artisan is one of Koehler Buildings' signature designs, inspired by the company's original Entertainer model and thoughtfully reimagined for today's homeowners. Designed as a reverse story-and-a-half floor plan, the home seamlessly blends sophisticated indoor living with exceptional outdoor spaces created for entertaining.

“The Artisan is a home designed not only to impress, but to be lived in.” One of the home's defining features is its more than 1,000 square feet of first-level outdoor living space. The all-seasons lanai includes a cantilevered fireplace, comfortable seating area and outdoor dining, while a built-in bar with three televisions, an open-air courtyard with a waterfall feature and additional gathering spaces flow seamlessly between indoor and outdoor living. This makes entertaining effortless throughout the year. Inside, the approximately 5,100-squarefoot home continues to impress with four bedrooms, beautifully appointed living spaces and thoughtful design throughout. A floating staircase creates a striking first impression, while upscale moldings, custom millwork and faux-finished entry walls showcase the craftsmanship Koehler Building

is known for. The chef-inspired kitchen is equipped with GE Monogram appliances, and the primary suite features built-in walnut nightstands that add warmth and character. Designed for recreation as much as relaxation, the lower level is built for hosting with a golf simulator featuring a mural of Pebble Beach's iconic seventh hole, custom wine storage, a bar area and expansive entertainment spaces that make gathering with family and friends feel effortless. The attention to detail extends beyond the home's signature features. Unexpected touches, including a hidden laundry room tucked beneath the stairs and a back TV room that opens directly onto the lanai, reflect the thoughtful planning behind every square foot.

Finding authentic designer pieces at an affordable price can feel like discovering a hidden treasure. Tucked away in Johnson County, Luxury Buyer KC has quietly become a local best-kept secret where shoppers can buy and sell preowned luxury handbags, watches, jewelry and accessories with confidence.

“Why wouldn’t someone want to save hundreds, if not thousands, on a pre-owned handbag that’s in great condition? It gives people the option to arrive in style and not break the bank.” Owner Travis Curley has built his business around a simple philosophy: make every customer feel valued. "Luxury Buyer KC offers a one-on-one private shopping and selling experience to ensure the customer receives the attention to detail that they deserve," says Travis. "We want people to have a great experience when buying or selling their luxury goods, so we work by appointment to give them our undivided attention.” That personalized approach is backed by years of expertise. As a certified Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, Travis brings specialized knowledge that gives clients peace of mind, especially when buying or selling fine jewelry.

"Being certified allows me to solidify my expertise when buying and selling diamonds. This ensures people receive a fair value for their jewelry because I know how to evaluate what they have.” In the luxury resale market, authenticity is everything. Travis combines years of industry experience with advanced authentication technology to verify designer handbags and other luxury items. "We use several methods to authenticate luxury items. By being in the business for many years, we have an eye to catch those items that are not authentic, along with certain tools, such as Entrupy, to authenticate the luxury bags.” CONTINUED >

Customers simply schedule an appointment, bring in their pieces for evaluation, and receive an offer with absolutely no pressure to sell. Some of the most coveted names in luxury have made their way through their doors. "We have had some really exciting watches come through the door like Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Rolex, along with some high-end bags like Hermès and jewelry, including Tiffany and Cartier. Weaving Inclusion Into Fashion Long before her designs appeared at Nordstrom, Jovana Mullins was a Kansas City girl sketching dresses, a talent her first-grade teacher noticed. “She told my mom that one day she would buy my designs at Bloomingdale’s,” Mullins said. “We haven’t made it to Bloomingdale’s yet, but seeing Alivia carried at Nordstrom has certainly felt like a special full-circle moment.”

40

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

Entrepreneurship was also part of everyday life. Her family includes several business owners, including the family behind the beloved Jasper’s Italian Restaurant, where she watched firsthand how genuine relationships and exceptional service create lasting success. “I watched firsthand how going above and beyond to provide an excellent customer experience and building genuine relationships creates something much bigger than a business. It creates a legacy,” she says. After graduating from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, Mullins moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design. She later designed for renowned fashion houses including Matthew Williamson, Diane von Furstenberg, Alice + Olivia, COACH and Cynthia Rowley. CONTINUED >

Today, the Kansas City native is the founder and creative director of Alivia, a contemporary fashion brand that transforms artwork created by artists with disabilities into thoughtfully designed collections. The brand has earned national recognition for pairing elevated design with a mission that celebrates creativity and inclusion. Growing up in Kansas City, Mullins was surrounded by people who encouraged her creativity from an early age. At 13, her grandmother taught her to sew, giving her the skills to turn her sketches into garments. Throughout high school, she designed dresses for friends, created her own prom and homecoming gowns and organized fashion shows that raised money for a nonprofit she founded. “Looking back, those experiences taught me that fashion could be more than beautiful clothing. It could bring people together and create meaningful impact,” she says.

“I HAD SPENT MY CAREER TURNING MY OWN ARTWORK INTO FASHION PRINTS, AND SUDDENLY I REALIZED I COULD COMBINE MY LOVE OF FASHION, ART AND SERVING OTHERS INTO ONE PURPOSE-DRIVEN BRAND.”

42

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

Although she enjoyed her career in fashion, she felt called to use her talents in a different way. That moment came in 2018 while volunteering with an organization serving young adults with autism. “I was completely blown away by their artwork,” she says. “Their paintings weren’t just beautiful. They were deeply expressive. I experienced what I can only describe as a God moment,” she says. “I had spent my career turning my own artwork into fashion prints, and suddenly I realized I could combine my love of fashion, art and serving others into one purpose-driven brand.” Rather than asking artists to create fashion-specific artwork, Alivia celebrates the work they are already creating, preserving each artist’s authentic style while translating it into wearable designs. Each collection begins with an artist’s original work, whether watercolor paintings, marker drawings or mixed-media creations. Every artist is paid for the use of their work, and 10 percent of sales are donated to their associated nonprofit. The upcoming fall collection carries another connection to the Midwest. It features artwork by Grace Reber, an artist with Down syndrome who spent part of her childhood in Kansas City before moving to Oklahoma City. “Her signature watercolor florals and abstract paintings inspired vibrant prints throughout the collection,” Mullins says. “We even transformed portions of her paintings into embroidered details on denim, dresses and novelty collars.” Today, Alivia’s collections are carried by Nordstrom and specialty retailers across the country, introducing customers to the artists behind each collection while demonstrating how inclusive design and exceptional fashion can exist side by side. “I hope we’re helping shift the conversation from disability to ability,” she says. “Every artist we work

with is incredibly talented, and we want the world to recognize them first as artists.” As Alivia continues to grow, Mullins hopes to create career opportunities for people with disabilities throughout the company, building inclusion into every part of the business. Along the way, Mullins has remained committed to one guiding principle. “Start with purpose, but never sacrifice excellence,” she says. “Your mission may be what first captures someone’s attention, but your product is what earns their trust.” She believes beautiful design and meaningful impact can exist together, allowing every collection to tell a story while standing on its own as exceptional fashion. As Alivia prepares to unveil its newest fall collection, Mullins continues to expand opportunities for artists with disabilities while staying rooted in the values she learned growing up in Kansas City. With every collection, she is opening doors for artists, reshaping perceptions and proving that creativity has the power to connect people in lasting and meaningful ways. MORE THAN

a Bag

A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 46

FASH ION F OR WA R D | S HOPPIN G

A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything. CONTINUED >

47

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together.

ASK THE Expert: BUILDING A BETTER MEN’S WARDROBE WITH HOUNDSTOOTH

A great wardrobe is not about having more clothes. It is about having the right clothes. At Houndstooth in Leawood, Kansas, Jeff Covitz helps men build wardrobes that balance timeless style, modern fit, and everyday versatility. Here, Jeff shares his advice on the essential pieces every man should own and how a few thoughtful choices can make getting dressed easier.

Q: What are the five essential pieces every man should own, and why are they worth the investment? Jeff: Start with a crisp, well-fitted white dress shirt. We produce ours in Italy with a semi-spread collar, mitered cuffs, and French placket. It may seem simple, but there is a sincerity to a white shirt that other colors do not quite convey. When you want to be taken seriously, it works. Second, every man should own a pair of black cap-toe dress shoes. Like a crisp white shirt, they are simple, but they communicate that you mean business. A dark navy suit is another essential. There is hardly an event, from a wedding to a funeral to a business meeting, where you cannot wear one. It always looks crisp and sharp.

58

EXP E RT H E LP | P RO FES SION AL SE RVICE S

Fourth is a blue Oxford button-down, the workhorse of a well-dressed man's wardrobe. It is a classic choice for nearly everything outside of a suit. Finally, invest in a great pair of loafers, preferably in dark brown or black. Suede can be a nice touch. A good loafer elevates everything from casual outfits to casual suiting.

Q: What are the biggest fit mistakes you see men make? Jeff: Men are still buying clothes that are too slim. Styles change, and our youngest, most fashionable clients are asking for more room in their garments. Not baggy, but a little more comfortable and relaxed than what we've seen over the last 10 to 15 years.

Q: How can men balance classic style with current trends? Jeff: Menswear tends to change every 15 to 20 years. Right now, we're seeing a lot of neutrals, particularly for spring and destination weddings. Beige, putty gray, and ivory are strong choices for dinner jackets.

Q: What are your top tips for looking polished without appearing overdressed? Jeff: There are worse things than being overdressed. Wear what makes you feel confident. Confidence almost always outworks style.

Q: What accessories can elevate an outfit? Jeff: Sometimes removing an accessory makes you look more modern. We're seeing more trousers with side tabs instead of belt loops. If the pants fit correctly at the waist, you shouldn't need a belt. Vintage watches are also on the rise. They do not have to be expensive. A classic, timeless watch can make you look smarter.

Q: What's the one piece of advice you wish every man knew before shopping? Jeff: Do your research. Know what you like before you come in, especially for custom clothing. We have thousands of fabrics, and that can be overwhelming. We can guide you through the process and make recommendations, but clients are often happiest when they have an idea of what they want and allow us to bring that vision to life.

A LATE SUMMER/EARLY FALL TREAT

APPLE CIDER

sangria

62

H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

As the season transitions into fall, it still features the warm, sunny days of summer but nights start to drop into the crisp temperatures. That leaves us in the limbo of wanting cool, refreshing drinks part of the time but also craving the deeper, spice-infused flavors of autumn. This recipe for apple cider sangria is the perfect blending of the seasons, leaving you feeling both refreshed and warmed through the deep flavors and interesting hints of spice. It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.

ARTICLE BY ALLISON BANKSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• • • • • •

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

Wear Colors That Truly

LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life. KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.

CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.

THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cool-toned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.

BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!

PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly— wear what makes you feel beautiful.
