Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and to discover ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard bar-be-que with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love.

Now that two of my kids are in college, our summers together are extra special to me. I know we have such little time left together with all of us in one house, so I am trying to dedicate as much time as possible with them enjoying their presence and taking the trips we have always wanted to take. With life’s demands and busy schedules, it can often be difficult to set aside time to do the things we love with those special to us. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, or even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.

Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room from exploration and to prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life —To lose yourself on a trail or in a book, to go on that trip you have been dreaming about, or to make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar.

Diversity of Portugal Discover the Charm and

Robert Riesmeyer, Founder & Experience Curator of Travel Unrivaled, has been crafting unique travel experiences for 15 years. His agency goes beyond traditional travel planning by designing one-of-akind adventures tailored to individual preferences. When asked about his favorite travel destinations, Riesmeyer finds it challenging to pick just one. From sitting in a cloud in Machu Picchu to hang gliding in Switzerland, his experiences are as varied as they are memorable.

Among the many destinations he has explored, Portugal holds a special place for its relative obscurity and authenticity. "You can have multiple different experiences all within a short span of time and distance," he says. Portugal's diverse landscapes range from the stunning beaches of the Algarve to the lush Douro Valley and the volcanic Azores. Its rich history and vibrant culture are evident in its historic cities, like Lisbon and Porto, which blend Moorish influences with the distinctive Manueline style.

Portugal's seafaring past is celebrated through monuments, museums, Fado music, and traditional festivals, reflecting deep cultural roots. The cuisine, famous for seafood and pastries like pastel de nata, is complemented by renowned wines such as port and Vinho Verde. Portugal's affordability, friendly locals, and safe environment make it an attractive destination.

The mild Mediterranean climate is ideal year-round, and the country's commitment to sustainability and ecotourism enhances its appeal. When planning when to Portugal, Riesmeyer shares that its spring and fall seasons offer ideal weather and fewer crowds, while winter provides a quieter experience with mild conditions in the Algarve. Although for beachgoers, summer is best but can be busier and a little pricey.

MUST-VISIT CITIES AND THEIR UNIQUE OFFERINGS FROM THE EXPERT:

• Porto: This vibrant city is known for its port wine, charming medieval district Ribeira, and stunning views from the Dom Luís I Bridge. Its architecture, including the Livraria Lello bookstore, is a must-see.

• Lisbon: The capital city, known for its Fado music, historic tram rides, and landmarks like the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. Its lively atmosphere and scenic views from places like São Jorge Castle make it a top destination.

• Sintra: Known for its fairy-tale palaces and castles, such as the Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle, Sintra offers a magical experience with its lush landscapes and historic estates.

• Coimbra: Home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, Coimbra boasts rich academic history and beautiful architecture, including the stunning Biblioteca Joanina.

• Faro: The gateway to the Algarve, Faro features a charming old town, Roman ruins, and access to stunning beaches and natural reserves. Experiencing Fado music, touring wine regions like the Douro Valley, participating in traditional festivals, and exploring historic monuments and architecture are musts for any visitor. Culinary delights such as bacalhau à Brás, pastéis de nata, and cataplana de marisco are essential tastes of Portugal. Riesmeyer recommends exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations like Monsanto, Aldeias do Xisto, and the Ria Formosa natural park. For adventure seekers, Portugal offers excellent surfing spots, hiking trails in Peneda-Gerês National Park, paragliding in Sintra, and canyoning in the Azores.

“Be open to exploring and interacting with locals, as Portuguese hospitality is one of the country’s greatest charms.”

While Portuguese is the official language, English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Basic Portuguese phrases are appreciated. Tipping is customary but not mandatory, and modest dress is advised when visiting religious sites. "Plan your trip based on your interests," advises Riesmeyer, "whether it's exploring historic cities, relaxing on beaches, or indulging in food and wine. Be open to exploring and interacting with locals, as Portuguese hospitality is one of the country's greatest charms."

With its rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant culture, Portugal offers something for every traveler. From the bustling cities of Lisbon and Porto to the tranquil beaches of the Algarve and the historic charm of Sintra, a trip to Portugal promises unforgettable experiences and lasting memories.

MARIGOLD’S FOOD TRUCK

Your Guests Will Be ‘Lov’n Every Bite’ with Marigold’s as Host to Your Next Social Event!

In the words of Norman Kolpas, “Food, like a love touch or a glimpse of divine power, has the ability to comfort.” These are words to live by for Mary Morsch, owner of the charming and delectable Marigold’s food truck that has been serving the Kansas City metro the ultimate comfort food since 2018!

“Food, like a love touch or a glimpse of divine power, has the ability to comfort.”

Not only did City Lifestyle have the pleasure of Marigold’s hosting our annual block party where over fifty local staff and party-goers were able to indulge in her fresh and creative menu, but we also had the opportunity to meet Mary, learn more about her story, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of her colorful truck accessorized by, you guessed it, vibrant Marigold flowers!

My Mother is no ordinary woman!

Mary’s inspiration is rooted in her mother who is ‘an amazing cook,’ and her upbringing with ten siblings who flocked to the dinner table for their mother’s beloved homecooked dinners. For many of

us, dinners meant easy boxed meals or ready to eat processed foods, but for Mary and her brothers and sisters, dinners looked a lot different with their mom spending hours ‘pouring her love’ into made from scratch main dishes and sweets. “We would hear the sound of the dinner bell and come running from the surrounding neighborhood, usually with a few extra in tow. Those dinners were the center of our lives. We laughed, we shared and we loved.”

Meal time floods back sweet memories for me and brings comfort. I want to share that feeling by serving my endeared city with all of my love baked into every bite.

Mary leaned into her engrained love of the joy of food by working in the restaurant industry growing up and for years to come. While she continues her dream of opening her own restaurant one day, she took the first step by starting the truck fit for private parties that you will usually find at wedding receptions, employee staff parties, birthdays, anniversary parties, and more.

Marigold's serves the entire Kansas City metro, also entertaining special requests from outer-lying towns such as Hutchinson, Stockton, Lawrence, and St. Joe, to name a few, and the menu is vast so they can appeal to all kinds of tastes at once. “Our food is ‘home cooking with a ton of love.’

The Marigold’s culinary team crafts everything from slow-cooked pot roast sandwiches, BBQ miso pork tacos, Moroccan chicken sandwiches, grilled caprese sandwiches, honey glazed salmon, and lasagna all the way to kid-friendly hot dogs, brats, and nachos. Plus, don’t forget the sweet ending. “Our butter bars are to die for!”

Clients are also able to create their own menus, often presenting new, fun requests that also provide a welcomed challenge to continue honing their skills. Regardless of the final menu, what they offer is always unique and original to Marigold’s, plus, you will always find a well rounded selection of salads and appetizers to complement three to four entrees to choose. Interested in adding dessert and beverages? They’ve got you covered there as well.

“We would hear the sound of the dinner bell and come running from the surrounding neighborhood, usually with a few extra in tow. Those dinners were the center of our lives. We laughed, we shared and we loved.”

In addition to serving happy and delicious memories to Kansas City residents, incorporating philanthropy into their mission is at their core. “We love feeding our community! What could be better than satisfying someone's hunger and bringing them back to their childhood comfort at the same time?”

Mary and her team enjoy their weekends filling up fast because they absolutely love what they do, always having fun. We hope you feel inspired to tap into the Marigold’s joy as an ornament to your next event!

Barley Bus Tours

ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Barley Bus Tours was established in 2015 with a simple goal: to create unforgettable experiences for craft beer lovers in Kansas City. What began with brewery tours quickly expanded to include wineries, distilleries, and even food and sightseeing tours.

Todd Abrams is the founder and owner of Barley Bus Tours.

“Each Barley Bus Tour is a unique adventure, crafted to ignite your senses and leave you with lasting memories,” says Abrams. “Whether you're a beer enthusiast eager to explore hidden gems, a wine lover seeking exquisite flavors or a curious foodie ready to embark on a culinary journey, we've got a tour that's perfect for you. Our expert guides are passionate about showcasing the best of Kansas City, from locally brewed craft beers and award-winning wines to mouthwatering BBQ and iconic landmarks.

“It's not just about the destinations, it's about the journey, the camaraderie and the shared experience of discovering something new. One of my favorite things is watching people get on the bus for a public tour. It starts quiet and cordial, but by the time they return, everyone is laughing, hugging and exchanging phone numbers. That's the magic of Barley Bus Tours—we bring people together over a shared love of good food, good drinks and good times.”

First-time guests can expect an all-inclusive experience. They handle all the details, from transportation, exclusive access and tastings led by knowledgeable guides.

“We take pride in offering an "edu-tainment" experience that's both fun and educational, so you can avoid the stress of navigating the city and simply enjoy VIP access to Kansas City's best. It's a truly unique way to experience the heart of KC, no matter your interests, from craft breweries and wineries to distilleries, delicious food, and iconic landmarks.”

While they offer preset itineraries, they specialize in creating custom tours tailored to each group’s preferences. From bachelor or bachelorette parties, corporate events or special celebrations, Barley Bus Tours works closely with their clients to design a personalized experience. With a vintage charming VW bus for small groups to a larger bus for bigger groups, they have the perfect ride for every celebration.

“We've cultivated strong relationships with local businesses and attractions. If you choose one of our expertly curated tours or let us create a custom experience just for you, we'll handle all the details so you can relax and enjoy the ride. If you can dream it, we can drive it, or plan it for you.”

Choosing a favorite tour is extremely difficult for Abrams.

“That’s like asking me to pick my favorite kid! I love them all for different reasons. If I had to choose, I'd probably say the brewery tour holds a special place in my heart since it was the one that started it all. But honestly, I'm incredibly proud of all our new tours, especially the BBQ and Ghost & Gangster tours, which are unlike anything we've done before. Those are definitely my babies right now.

“Whether you’re a beer enthusiast eager to explore hidden gems, a wine lover seeking exquisite flavors or a curious foodie ready to embark on a culinary journey, we’ve got a tour that’s perfect for you.”

“We're constantly on the lookout for new ways to show off our city's hidden gems, from secret speakeasies to delicious BBQ joints you won't find on any tourist map. We're cooking up even more tours and experiences, and who knows, you might even see a few surprise collaborations popping up soon. We've also got our eyes on the horizon, exploring exciting possibilities like expanding to other cities or even franchising the Barley Bus concept.”

outdoors adventure EQUIPPED TRAVEL

To explore is to travel for adventure or discovery, and and If your ideal trip is exploring the outdoors while and spending time with family without the distractions of the modern world, then experiencing the trips organized by Drew Davis, Founder of Equipped Outdoors, should be next on your list.

We took the time to ask Drew about his full-service outdoor backpacking guide service that empowers people to reconnect with nature, bond with family, and build memories you will talk about for years to come.

CL: WHAT INSPIRED YOU/YOUR TEAM TO START EQUIPPED OUTDOORS?

EO: I grew up playing in the outdoors and spending time with my father. I went through scouts and really enjoyed the opportunity that the outdoors allowed me to connect with my dad. As I grew up, I learned that this was not a normal experience for other men, and I was surprised when I would talk to someone who didn't know how to use a Ferro rod, read a topo map, filter water, start a fire, select a campsite, etc.

God created us to cultivate and enjoy His creation. Too many people are afraid to go and spend time in the backcountry because they lack the know-how, opportunity, and tools to get out there. 3 years ago, my wife and I were talking about how cool it would be if we had a business where people could sleep in a lodge, learn some skills, go on a backpacking trip, and return at the end for a debrief and send off.

Technology has taken over our lives. If we do not disconnect from technology and take time to connect with people, God, and nature, we'll never be able to experience life to its utmost potential. Our outdoor adventure trips are excellent for leadership teams, families, couples, fathers, and their children to foster growth, connections, skills, and confidence.

CL: WHO IS THE IDEAL AUDIENCE TO SIGN UP FOR AN EQUIPPED OUTDOORS ADVENTURE?

EO:  Our target audience is men and fathers with their kids and families. Our goal is to provide men and families* the opportunity to see the outdoors differently to equip them with the tools, training, and experiences to go into the outdoors on their own. We are an all-inclusive service that provides all the gear, food, and guides needed from the trailhead into the backcountry and back.

*(the first 2 kids are free for father/kid trips, ensuring families can get outside!)

CONTINUED >

CL: HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE LOCATIONS FOR YOUR TRIPS?

EO: The majority of the locations come from requests or are places I have experienced. If you are a newbie, we'll start you out on the Buffalo River Trail or Old River Trail. These 3-day/2-night adventures are perfect for fathers and their kids or novices for quick weekend getaways. If you have been in the backcountry before or experienced elevation >10,000, we offer 4-5 day trips in Colorado in some of the most beautiful backcountry there is.  If you are looking for a true adventure and have a love for fishing, we offer a 5-6 day trip in the Bridger Tetons, fishing in 13+ lakes, and eating trout every night if participants want to. Lastly, we also do more challenging trips, like a 3-4 day Rimto-Rim-to-Rim in the Grand Canyon in December or January.

CL: WHAT DOES ONE NEED TO PACK FOR AN UPCOMING TRIP?

EO: Equipped Outdoors is an all-inclusive outfitter. We provide top-of-the-line gear (tent, backpack, temprated sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, water filter, etc.), breakfast, lunch, and dinner, experienced guides, and a lot of fun. All you need to bring is waterproof hiking boots, camp shoes/water crossing shoes, hiking clothes, hat, rain jacket, insulated jacket, headlamp, a water bottle, and a spork and snacks.

KOOB S T O TAKEYOU AWAY

I ASKED MY EXPAT AND TRAVEL-SAVVY FRIENDS TO RECOMMEND BOOKS TO TAKE ME FAR AWAY. HERE YOU GO!

Blue Latitudes

Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before. The Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist travels to various parts of the world, following in the footsteps of explorer James Cook.

The Island of Missing Trees

It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.

The Corfu Trilogy

Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise -  My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The

Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy

Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu, where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.

Cutting for Stone

Cutting for Stone is a novel written by Ethiopian-born, Indian-American medical doctor and author Abraham Verghese. It is a saga of twin brothers, orphaned by their mother’s death at their births and forsaken by their father.

The Museum of Innocence

The author is a Nobel-laureate Turkish novelist. The book, set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984, is an account of the love story between the wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relative of his, Füsun.
