MayLadies’ Issue

Mother’s Day is coming, and this is the month we love to celebrate ladies. Women are so much more than moms. They are movers, shakers, builders, and makers! I remember truly experiencing female support and leadership in college.

When I was a freshman at UNLV, everything on campus felt big. It was new and exciting. A little scary as well. I was invited to a meeting about joining a sorority, but this was different. Rather than join an existing sorority, the ladies I met were on a mission to bring a new sorority to our campus. It took a few years for this to happen but we each became leaders in the process. My sorority gave me a sense of connection and belonging. Several of these women are still a very big part of my life. They are my tribe!

After launching a City Lifestyle magazine in Las Vegas, I moved to KC to become the Publisher of this magazine. Once again, I felt like a freshman on a college campus. In this case the campus is a city. I sought connection and belonging through the Leawood Chamber of Commerce. This year, the Chamber launched a Leadership program, and I was so honored to be selected. I’d like to recognize Stephanie Meyer, President & CEO of the Chamber for adding Leadership Leawood to their programming. This was one of her goals when she was hired. Stephanie is like many of the women you will read about in this issue. She is the epitome of a strong, trailblazing, community-focused leader.

The inaugural class of Leadership Leawood will graduate this month. During the program, UMKC Talent Link provided excellent training about leadership with purpose. This is the purpose statement that I crafted for myself: I want to be a conduit in our community that helps people and businesses belong and flourish.

Nothing makes me happier than connecting people and helping local businesses grow. This publication is the perfect platform to do just that! This magazine is mailed to nearly every home in Leawood and Loch Lloyd. It is because of our ad partners that we can tell great stories about the people, places and the experiences that make this community so special! So, remember, when shopping for your favorite mother this year, consider our ad partners and always shop local!

Get the facts about the benefits of Missouri’s Wood Industry Missouri Forest Products Association 573-634-3252 | 505 E State St. · Jefferson City, MO Real wood makes homes better.

WHY CHOOSE WOOD

Wood is Healthier

Because wood flooring requires fewer chemicals to make and install, it helps promote healthier living and work environments.

The EPA found that hardwood floors improve air quality because they are less likely to harbor dangerous microorganisms, pesticides, and allergens, such as dust, mold, or pet dander.

Wood is Durable

Vinyl flooring will last only a decade or two, while quality wood flooring can last more than 100 years.

Wood floors will stand up to foot traffic and will maintain their color finish with proper maintenance. Vinyl flooring, however, will last only a decade or two and fade dramatically over time when exposed to sunlight.

Wood floors are easy to maintain and can be repaired with relative ease. But vinyl typically needs to be replaced completely if it’s damaged.

Wood is Sustainable

Wood is a zero waste product. For example, old wood from flooring can be turned into other products or simply bio-degrade.

Other flooring types, such as vinyl, are made from plastics or synthetic fibers that take multiple decades to break down and decompose. Recycling companies typically reject old vinyl flooring because it’s not profitable for them. And, the alternative form of disposal - burning - releases harmful phthalate chemicals into the air.

Wood Makes Sense Economically

Many homeowners love the look of hardwood flooring and other features in their home. But they are also concerned about the initial expense of installing wood.

Putting wood floors into your home is truly a good investment. Real hardwood floors add to the resale value of your home. The average return on investment is 70 to 80%!

“The KC Current are changing the game and showing the world what can be done and how successful it can be.”

Kansas City Current

Arguably one of the most celebratory accomplishments in our city is not only the expansion of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) with the Kansas City Current and their roster of exceptional female athletes, but the development of the gorgeous CPKC Stadium at Berekely Riverfront Park making global headlines for embarking on an empowering, inclusive, and transformational change in women’s sports.

“The KC Current are changing the game and showing the world what can be done and how successful it can be. What’s better? It’s happening right here in our backyard in Kansas City,” says Dani Welniak, KC Current’s Vice President of Communication.

Dani summed up what fans can expect while cheering on our women at the downtown destination, including developing a passion and loyalty for the team as well as and an entertaining and modern stadium creating a memorable experience for fans by activating all five senses.

The community-focused stadium also offers the best that KC has to offer in a single destination, including the local restaurant partners curated by Colby and Megan Garrelts of Rye. “CPKC Stadium was built with celebrating Kansas City’s rich cultural heritage in mind and reflects the diverse history and unique influences in culture, art, food, sports and music.”

Kansas City Roller Warriors

Kansas City’s ‘Rink of Fire’ has been burning since 2004 and a founding member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and host to our city’s premier roller derby league.

The Roller Warriors consist of three home teams: The Strawberry Hellions, the Midtown Misfits, and the 18th & Vines and play in the historic Memorial Hall in Strawberry Hill from November through May as well as a combined competitive travel team called the All-Stars that is made up of players from those three home teams and beyond.

With a monthly doubleheader, the players volunteer their time to battle it out in the competitive sport complete with punny player nicknames like Demanda Slappin as a nod to the once-theatrical sport.

Lauren Murphy, aka Hellvetica and KCRW’s Marketing and Communications Officer, is actively getting the word out about the local sports experience. Also on the Advisory Board for WIN for KC, Lauren started as a Junior skater under the mentorship of her mom who competed in the league and is now a force for inclusivity and encouragement on and off the track. She has helped bring to life what the league is today including match drinks and eats by Sponsors Embrace the Grape and Blended Vibes and the post-bout festivities at pinball bar 403 Club. You can support the teams by attending a match, making a tax-deductible donation, attending a fundraising event and following along on social media.

“Women in sports are still battling for equal awareness, but we are not only here to stay, but to play!”

Kansas City Glory

Kansas City’s women’s tackle football team is another example of paving the path for even more greatness. KC Glory is led by USA Gold Medalist and Owner Keke Blackmon, who founded the team in 2019 with a calling to serve and empower women and girls on and off the field.

“I am overloaded with excitement that others are starting to see what has been here this entire time. Our future is destined for greatness. Women in sports are still battling for equal awareness, but we are not only here to stay, but to play!”

The Glory has a roster of 50 players including four international players. As Head Coach, Keke’s love for the game is fueled by the opportunity for impact and inclusivity, representing women of all shapes and sizes and a variety of professions by day and who sacrifice countless hours to be a part of something bigger. The season runs April through June, and the team can be seen playing at Shawnee Mission North High School.

Collectively, the team is known for their immense support for organizations that give much back to the community, including Girls Play Flag Football, Our Spot KC, and WIN for KC, of which Keke and GM, Krishnna Lee, have both been awarded the Leadership Award.

You can find the Glory’s schedule and home game tickets on their website and ongoing updates on social media. kansascityglory.com

“...it was a bit astonishing to me that in 2023 women who wanted to play professionally couldn’t play here at home, and that’s what motivated our decision to form the team.”

Kansas City Pro Volleyball

Save the date for January 2025 when Kansas City’s new Women’s Professional Volleyball team launches.

In 2023, owners Missy and Kent McCarthy identified the opportunity to add KC to the Pro Volleyball Federation’s roster. Investing extensive time and resources into their new passion project, they became fast friends with Lori Thomas, former college player and Commissioner of the Heart of America Athletic Conference, as well as Kathy Nelson, KC’s Sports Commissioner and President & CEO of WIN for Kansas City. Both rank amongst the impressive list of females laying the local groundwork in women’s sports.

“Women’s volleyball is one of the fastest-growing sports—the third most watched NCAA sport behind men’s football and basketball; it was a bit astonishing to me that in 2023 women who wanted to play professionally couldn’t play here at home, and that’s what motivated our decision to form the team.”

The majority of female volleyball athletes exit college and have to look outside the USA to play professionally, acquiring additional training and a new cultural experience. But, they sacrifice an incredible amount in doing so. With the addition of the Pro Volleyball Federation, they now have the option to come home and play professionally with competitive salaries and to have their friends and family cheer them on.

In 2025, the women’s Pro Volleyball league will consist of 10 teams playing in-season from January to mid-May. “There is so much excitement in the stands. It is amazing to watch these women play in person, their talent is incredible.”

“It is on a trajectory like no one has ever seen before. The women’s games are as good as men’s; they come down to buzzer-beaters and overtimes and they are so fun to watch.”

Kansas City Sports Commissioner

“Participate. Spectate. Celebrate.” Kathy Nelson’s mantra for everyone to play a part in the amplification of women’s sports in KC. Kansas City’s Sports Commissioner and President & CEO of WIN for KC, Kathy is wildly impressive in her accomplishments leading the movement of women’s sports locally alongside so many powerful counterparts.

WIN for KC envisions a community where sport ignites the life of every woman and girl. From the simple act of showing up at your local high school volleyball game to cheering on our competitive figure skaters, tackle football players, roller derby warriors, and more, you are directly making an impact on the continual and life-changing opportunities for KC women in sports.

Kathy has been working behind the scenes for decades playing an integral role in the development of events like the annual Camp WIN girls sports camp, Women’s Sports Awards (the largest in the country), Big 12 and Division I Women’s Basketball, and the 2025 DI Women's College Volleyball.

“It is on a trajectory like no one has ever seen before. The women’s games are as good as men’s; they come down to buzzer-beaters and overtimes and they are so fun to watch.”

On a national level, Kathy says KC is not only recognized for its efforts through WIN for KC, but that others are starting to do deep dives into what is working and how are we impacting our community to follow in our footsteps.

Visit sportkc.org and follow @winforkc for ways to show up and support local KC women’s sports.

When I’m behind my bar, that’s my space. I own that, and I feel like I can do anything.

These women bust into the entertainment scene, offering face painting, cocktails, music, party tents and more. All own their own businesses, but their goal universal: offer experiences that are fun and unique.

KC COCKTAIL COMPANY, THE SNICKETY SNACK BAR AND KC SCOOP COUPE

Paige White is the hostess with the mostest! She strives to make hosts look like superstars, while making sure they enjoy their own party.

“I personally enjoy hosting parties and having people over but spend the entire time making sure everyone has a drink and food, so I never really enjoy my own party,” she noted. “That is how I got the idea to start KC Cocktail Company.”

Paige spent 27 years in the restaurant business but left for about 10 years to pursue another career.

“Food and beverage are in my blood, and I’m really great at hospitality and enjoy cocktails, so two years ago I opened KC Cocktail with one mobile cart, and I now have six mobile bars and a horse trailer."

She branched out to create her two other companies, KC Scoop Coupe, a mobile ice cream bar, and The Snickety Snack Bar, KC’s first mobile snack bar which includes a baked potato bar, mashed potatoes, nachos, pretzels, hot dogs and the most popular sweet and salty bar, along with yogurt parfaits and a mini pancake bar. She recently added several different rentals including her bar rentals, a Martini Wall and Champagne and Charcuterie walls as well as many other options.

“My passion is making craft cocktails. When I’m behind my bar, that’s my space. I own that, and I feel like I can do anything. It’s my little private island.”

Paige is looking forward to the future with continued growth, especially in the corporate world with all three of her concepts.

SA ENTERTAINMENT KC LLC

Since 2003, SA Entertainment, formerly Sister Act Face Painting, has blossomed from a small venture into Kansas City's largest collective of subcontractor talent and entertainment. Founded by MJ and her sister Kimberly Nichols, the business began as a fun side project to earn extra income. Despite initial doubts about the name, MJ agreed to "Sister Act Face Painting," never imagining it would extend beyond that summer.

“The loss of Kim early on was tough, but her memory inspires us daily.  During the pandemic, SA Entertainment underwent a transformation, rebranding to encompass a broader range of talent beyond face painting,” she noted. “This strategic pivot, driven by a desire to support struggling friends and collaborators in the industry, led to the birth of SA Entertainment KC LLC.”

MJ’s daughter Cody is now her partner and has helped SA Entertainment flourish.

“We are a mother-daughter team on this incredible journey. Cody's background as an art director has infused the team with fresh perspectives and boundless creativity, taking our offerings in new directions."

SA Entertainment offers it all: Face Painting, Caricature Artist, Balloon Artist, Live Music, DJs, Silent Disco, Princesses, Superheroes, Santa Claus, Digital Caricatures, Henna, Stilt Walkers, Fire Performers, Photo Booths, and more! Their stellar reputation has drawn in big names like The Kansas City Chiefs, Major League Baseball All Star Games, Sporting Kansas City, The NFL Draft, Union Station, Chicken N Pickle, KC Power & Light, Leawood Parks & Recreation, Prairie Fire, Town Center Plaza, Park Place and more.  From large-scale sporting events to community festivals to intimate birthday parties, their presence is synonymous with fun and excitement.

AAA PARTY RENTALS

Whatever you need for a great event or party, AAA Party Rental has you covered. Although the company has been helping Kansas City with celebrations for over fifty years, current owner, Mary Dee Rychnovsky, is rather new to the game.

“I was a partner at a large law firm. Although I loved my job and firm, I wanted to do something more rightbrained. I always enjoyed entertaining and actually looked at AAA Party Rental when it was for sale years ago,” she noted. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t the right time as I had just adopted a daughter and was figuring motherhood out.”

When her younger brother died unexpectedly several years later, she felt like it was now or never to make the leap. She contacted a broker looking for a business that would allow her to have some creativity. Continuing, “The broker told me she knew of a new

listing for a party rental business - it was AAA Party Rental! I figured this was fate.”

Mary Dee grew up in Moberly, Missouri, received undergraduate degrees from the University of Missouri – Columbia, then moved to Kansas City after college to work for a publishing company. She then attended law school in St. Louis and practiced there for 25 years. But she always wanted to return to KC. She bought AAA Party Rental in August 2019, and COVID hit six months later.

“Talk about challenging – I now owned a business whose whole premise was based on bringing people together, and we were facing a time when it was all about staying apart.”

From teaspoons to tents, AAA Party Rental has it. “We like to say we provide everything you need to host an event except food.” In 2024, she sees people wanting to put their individual stamp on events whether it’s certain elements or the entire theme.

The best part is seeing the final event. “Our team is dedicated to helping people put together their perfect event as stress-free as possible. This includes brainstorming ideas, discussing limitations, and seamlessly executing the final plans. It’s great to see the whole celebration come together.”

KEEPING TIME

Our legacy, crafted and preserved through the moments we cherish

In the quaint neighborhood of Beaverdale, Iowa, in a small kitchen, where the aroma of home-cooked meals mingled with the tick-tock of the Kit-Cat Clock and the small suncatcher hanging in the window split beams of light into a kaleidoscope of colors, my grandmother Mary Lou Martin turned calendars into time capsules.

It was a practice born out of love; a testament to the belief that life’s true beauty lies in the details. This wasn’t merely a habit; it was a practice rooted in dedication to capturing the essence of fleeting moments, both monumental and mundane, to craft a tangible collection of memories.

Etched in dark red ink, “Man on the Moon!!” marked July 20, 1969. A more somber “President Kennedy Assassinated!” stood out in dark black on November 22, 1963, and a simple yet poignant entry “Gary (my dad) 10 years old” was sprawled across April 25, 1963. Taped to the pages were artifacts of her experiences, including newspaper clippings, movie tickets, and napkins from her favorite now-closed restaurant, Mama Lacona’s, a cherished family spot in Des Moines.

Despite Mary Lou’s passing when I was seven, before I was old enough to appreciate or commit to memory the amazing woman she was, her legacy lives on through the pages of these calendars. My memories of her are intricately woven with stories from my father and his siblings, her voice echoing in old home videos, and decades of the timelines she left behind.

Mary Lou’s spirit became the guiding force behind Joyflower, a creative studio dedicated to investing in moments. Through the design of calendars, Joyflower seeks to revive the lost art of transforming each day into a journey of introspection, gratitude, and an appreciation for life’s often-overlooked beauty.

Inspired by the beauty of the suncatcher in her window, The Timecatcher™ emerged as a tribute to Mary Lou’s commitment to capturing moments. This unique calendar transforms the passage of time into a beautiful collection of details — beams of light in the stories of our lives.

MY MEMORIES OF HER ARE

INTRICATELY WOVEN WITH STORIES FROM MY FATHER AND HIS SIBLINGS, HER VOICE ECHOING IN OLD HOME VIDEOS, AND DECADES OF THE TIMELINES SHE LEFT BEHIND.

With just enough space to capture moments, we aim to shift from routine to ritual; from obligation to opportunity. Small pockets at the top of each month offer space for special mementos, and a tear-off piece at the bottom of each page helps with year-end reflection of the best moments of the months gone by.

Crafted by hand in a small home-office in Lenexa, Kansas, each calendar bears witness to Mary Lou’s influence, with her photos adorning the walls and a suncatcher in the window casting a rainbow of colors. More than just a calendar, The Timecatcher™ aspires to be a vessel of connection, bridging generational gaps and preserving the legacy of the unique way of cherishing life’s seemingly ordinary beauty.

First steps to graduations, quiet moments of reflection and unexpected adventures — all captured within the pages; and the small kitchen in Beaverdale has become the foundation for something greater — an invitation for everyone to invest not just in time, but in the stories waiting to be written.

Blackbird Collection

Blackbird Collection created by Amy Appleton Dreyer brings fashion and interiors together in a gallery setting and aims to provide an experience of mindful consumption. Find environmentally conscious brands and beautiful vintage and custom pieces, all in a former art gallery in the Crossroads.

“After graduating college, I was busy waiting tables and backpacking all over the world,” says Dreyer. “Fashion was kind of a happy accident that I stumbled into after starting a blog to take my mind off of the IVF journey. My background is in modeling, styling and fashion for the last ten years. I started Stepsofstyle with my two stepdaughters and it slowly turned into so much more.

“I took fashion, interiors, and travel and combined them into a concept that could maybe help our planet, or at least raise awareness about climate change. The fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global emissions, particularly fast fashion. As a culture, we tend to wear things once and throw them away. So many brands overproduce, and what isn’t purchased ends up in the Atacama Desert in Chile or other landfills. I want to help people curate a timeless wardrobe by not only buying more conscious brands but also by buying less and wearing them more. It’s about finding pieces that last longer, are less trendy and more classic with just really incredible fits.”

Drawing inspiration from Amy's personal style, Blackbird Collection embodies a harmonious blend of modern and vintage charm.

“My fashion can be described as comfortable, chic and timeless with a little bit of glam. I’m very much into neutrals but there will definitely be some pops of color here and there.”

The brands reflect a diverse array of voices committed to positive change.

“A lot of brands at the shop aren’t just environmentally friendly but many have their own special story. I’m trying to support the planet and a diverse group of designers from all over the world. I picked four Ukrainian brands not just because I wanted to support them but also because their designs and fashion are some of my absolute favorite and most forward thinking in the sustainability category.”

The name of the shop holds deep significance and comes from her Sicilian roots, symbolizing a fusion of heritage and vision.

“Blackbird is derived from my Italian roots and family name, Merlo. I was born Amy Merlo Appleton. My great grandmother, Maria Merlo, immigrated here from Sicily in 1921. When I was trying to come up with a name for the shop, my mom (who also flies the Ukrainian flag proudly at her home my great grandmother built in Columbus Park) said the name Merlo means blackbird, your middle name from the center of who you are. And that was it—it stuck.”

“Even though retail by nature isn’t sustainable, I think by supporting forward thinking brands and having a conversation about fashion and sustainability will inspire others to follow suit in our pursuit of a consciously curated lifestyle.”

Step into the space and feel transported to another time and place, where modern elegance meets vintage allure.

“It truly is about bringing so many of my favorite things from decades of travel and adventures together. I picked mostly designers I have worn or worked with for years, so I know their quality of work and believe in their visions. We do vintage sourcing but I also carry new pieces from Matt Castilleja and Devon Himes Studio. I try to support mostly small with a few larger brands that show interest in the environment as well as creating timeless fashion that won’t really ever go out of style. I do mostly small batch buying to not only avoid sitting on large amounts of backstock but also because I want whoever purchases these pieces to feel that not everyone else will be seen wearing the exact same thing. I mostly get one of each size per season with the exception of a couple elevated basic brands.

“For Interiors, I partnered with my long time friends and colleagues, House of Palm. Chanel and I have worked closely together for years doing Stepsofstyle closet sales at her shop Dear Society as well as interior projects at my home. Collaborating with her as well as her partner Dante of Nomada, who is an incredible artist and visionary, has been so inspiring. We source unique pieces from all over the world, restore and recover them to bring something really special to people’s homes. We are also creating custom furniture as well. There is really something for everyone at Blackbird—a lot of pieces are definitely higher end, but there are a few brands that won’t break the bank or the planet. And honestly, it’s just a really fun space to hang out in, so no pressure to buy—you can just come hang out and get inspired.”

Blackbird aspires to pave the way for a future where fashion and sustainability coexist harmoniously.

“We want to educate everyone on the importance of doing our part to slow climate change. Even though retail by nature isn’t sustainable, I think by supporting forward thinking brands and having a conversation about fashion and sustainability will inspire others to follow suit in our pursuit of a consciously curated lifestyle.”

Blackbird Collection is located at 122 Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City and is opening this spring. For more information, visit blackbirdcollection.com

HANDMADE

BREAKING BREAD

CULINARY CREATIONS FOOD + BEVERAGE 48
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Making homemade bread is coming back, and while the convenience of buying a pre-made loaf is readily available, there is nothing like the taste of a warm, homemade loaf right out of the oven. This easy-to-follow recipe is exploding with flavor and is simple to make.

FOCACCIA

This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 ¾ cups warm water

• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar

• 1 package active dry yeast

• 4 cups flour

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 4 tablespoons olive oil

• Optional:

• Fresh rosemary

• Coarse sea salt

• Fresh pressed garlic

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.

Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
