Letter from the Publisher Welcome to our annual Health and Wellness edition! January is a wonderful time to focus on a new YOU! As such, I find myself asking, “How can I improve my health and wellness in 2024, personally and professionally?” As I try to answer, it helps to be reflective and appreciative for sources of past support. While it has been 16 months, it feels like yesterday when I relocated to be the publisher of Leawood City Lifestyle. I am so honored the founder of this publication recruited me for this opportunity. In 2020, the publication I owned and founded earned an award for the fastest City Lifestyle magazine to launch. That was in Las Vegas, where I lived for over 40 years and enjoyed an extensive career as a marketing consultant and media sales professional. While I am no stranger to this role, I was indeed a stranger to Leawood when I arrived. With this challenge, I immediately turned to the Leawood Chamber to help me get connected. Through this great organization I fostered amazing new friends and business partners. Recently, the Leawood Chamber of Commerce accepted my application to be part of their inaugural Leadership Leawood program. I am truly looking forward to the professional development I will gain through this program. Health and wellness on a personal level in 2023 has much more to do with my physical being. I plan to continue a journey that started about a year ago. I was dealing with a skin cancer scare that I am grateful doctors got under control. The episode made me wonder if I was taking the best care of myself. Shortly after, I met with the owners of Optimal Health and Wellness who were expanding their primary care practice. I was intrigued by their hormone replacement and medical weight loss treatments. Since April, they have helped me regain energy, lose weight, and feel much better. I am honored they are supporting me on my wellness journey AND as one of our ad partners. Puerto Maya Cancún combines a look into the historical Mayan culture of the Yucatán followed by an amazing speed boat tour of both the lagoon and the sea. And, just when you think it can’t get any better, it’s time to jump in and swim around. Snorkeling on the vibrant coral reefs and visiting MUSA, the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, absolutely recharges the mind, body, and soul. It is an incredible workout! If you care to go a little further out of the city, Cenotes Zapote Eco-Tour awaits. Cenotes are natural sinkholes that expose cool, refreshing, groundwater that is both invigorating and spiritually refreshing at the same time. There are over 6000 cenotes on the Yucatán, each one is unique and otherworldly. Floating or frolicking in the cool waters inside the earth is the ultimate spa experience. There are zip lines or diving platforms at most cenotes and they are well worth experiencing. While it is nice to explore the “Hotel Zone”, you don't have to leave the hotel to experience fine international dining at its best! Sacbé Beach Shack, located in the adjoining Marriott property was beyond belief. Situated directly on the sandy beaches beneath the hotel, the "beach shack" is a whimsically designed bar and dining room offering a perfect oceanside

culinary experience. The freshest local ingredients were artfully combined to create a scrumptious offering that highlights regional Mexican cuisines. The mezcal lab experience with famed Master Mezcalier, Chef Benjamín Nava Vargas was an unexpected treat and opened a door to a delicious understanding and appreciation of small-batch mezcals. Other JW Marriott Resort and Spa culinary treasures include Hana Polynesian Grill’s themed dining room. Perfectly crafty cocktails paired wonderfully with the authentic Polynesian Islands menu. The evening’s festivities were highlighted by a completely themed costumed troupe of singers and dancers performing time-honored Polynesian fire dances. While visiting, be sure to explore Kasai Izakaya, Club 91, and Bravo, a very fresh take on modern Spanish cuisine. The desire to craft a space that defines a family lifestyle is leading families to turn to interior designers to make it happen. Kara Kersten Design is a trusted boutique interior architectural design studio making headlines in Kansas City and is breaking down the do’s and don’ts of hiring an interior designer. “Most of our clients love where they live, it's usually not a location issue, but they're struggling with spaces that don't function well for their families,” said founder Kara Kersten, “We specialize in giving them homes that let them experience life with people in a new and better way.” CONTINUED >

For years Kersten and her team have been helping Kansas City families customize their homes, and she knows firsthand how interior designers help reduce stress. According to Kersten, each studio is different and if customers want to remodel an entire room which includes the removal of walls and floors, interior designers can be a homeowner’s biggest advocate. For example, Kersten has a degree in Interior Architecture and Product Design from Kansas State University. Her background led her to bring an architectural component to her company helping them effectively collaborate with industry leaders in construction, engineering, contractors and other trades to meet their client’s unique style. She can help clients walk through contracts,

timelines, and have companies vetted for them. It’s a step that clients fail to realize and often are left with negotiations and terms that leave them overwhelmed. "I'm usually translating for and supporting clients throughout the whole process,” said Kersten, "They learn things they didn't know and realize how much they need to have a hand to hold through the whole process.” DIY projects can also quickly become overwhelming and costly. While each project varies, remodeling projects involving extensive work can be an intricate process. Homeowner’s could end up buying parts or materials that fail to work with their current design or space.

Stretch Zones uses a team of experts to guide clients through a variety of stretches. Each thirty-minute session is designed to isolate, position, stabilize and work muscles properly and safely. "We do all the work, the clients get all the benefits of increased flexibility, decreased joint stiffness, improved mobility, and just a better functioning body that allows them to do the things

at the forefront of a program that had lasting gains. Harrick is a University Of Kansas graduate and has degrees in exercise science and a master's in physical therapy. With more than 30 years of experience under her belt, she understands the importance of hiring people with an academic background in the field. “A lot of our competitors will hire personal trainers or Yoga instructors, and there is nothing wrong with that, we just feel that a person who has gone to college to get a degree to focus on the human body has a better understanding and better knowledge on what your body is going through,” said Scott Harrick, business manager for Stretch Zone. Harricks says another reason why the team has to be selective is because practitioners are leading the client through the entire session.

With help from a patented strapping system, certified staff do the work for clients. With each visit, Harrick has seen her clients make improvements in mobility, stiffness and soreness. Some of the Harick’s favorite success stories, include helping a gentleman battling Multiple sclerosis walk his daughter down the aisle during her big day. Harrick says the Stretch Zone team worked with him for three months prior and when it was time for his daughter’s wedding, the gleaming father was able to stand proud and tall next to his daughter’s side. “Those are stories we hear every day, people who have been changing back pain for six months to two years start our program and with something our stretching program, that pain is relieved,” said Harrick, “our goal is not to diagnose anyone's problem, we work with each individual on what their goals are and where they are in their health and wellness journey." The Harrick’s recently took home Stretch Zone’s Franchisee of the Year Award and serve on the Franchise Advisory Council.
