Welcome to our Home issue. For over forty years I called Las Vegas home. Six months ago, I put new roots down in Kansas City. This is an exceptional place to live and to be your publisher. Not only have I adjusted to being a publisher in a new community, I am also adjusting to being an empty nester. I have two amazing young adult kids. Blake is twenty-six and Holly is twenty-two. Their age and independence afforded me the opportunity to accept this role which frankly, came as a pleasant surprise last summer. After accepting the role, I found a home here and in a matter of weeks for me and my dog Bentley. Over Thanksgiving, I was thrilled when my kids were able to take time from work and school to visit. We made great memories together including a Boulevard Brewing tour and the Plaza Christmas lighting ceremony. While I am a new resident discovering new people and places, your editor was born in Kansas City and comes from a large loving family. Angela has been the editor for nine years. She and her husband are raising their beautiful family here. Your editor utterly understands and loves our community and could not be more qualified to find and create our content every month. For a publisher, this is a huge blessing. Angela is a major factor for my relocation and I love working with her on behalf of our readers and our advertisers. This transition certainly makes me reflect on the definition of home. Naturally, home should be a haven and comfort zone. It is a place to live with family and pets and to enjoy with friends. Home is a place to build memories and can also help build future wealth. It is a place where we can truly be ourselves. I have learned that home may not be static. Like Angela, home may be the place we grew up, but like me, it can just as easily be where we feel settled and begin a new life full of possibilities. Last week my daughter called and asked if she can come stay with me after she graduates college. She is planning her final semester in Spain and needs to determine what is next from there. It made my heart happy that she may be spending time here. Kansas City is a beautiful place to call home! Whatever home means to you, may you see and feel all its blessings! For 30 years, locally owned The Rug Studio has been devoted to developing and providing the widest selection of beautiful, high-quality and handcrafted area rugs for both residential and commercial projects. With an exclusive, to-the-trade rug showroom in Overland Park, The Rug Studio offers professionals in the design community the finest in area rugs from around the world. “A beautiful area rug can tie the entire design of a room together, providing richness of color, texture, warmth, comfort and artistry to any living space for years to come,” says Owner/ President Phil Aitken. The Rug Studio showroom houses more than 500 room-sized rugs available for purchase, with a full-range of styles including
designer collections, traditional, transitional, contemporary, indoor/outdoor, and even custom rugs created from your own original design concept. “Using little more than a vision, a swatch of fabric, or a sketch, we can produce an area rug customized to the requirements of your project. Client satisfaction is our goal, and we encourage our designers to take multiple room-sized rugs to their clients’ homes or workspaces to get a true feel for how they complete the space, prior to buying. This allows the client to view the rugs in their own setting prior to purchase—with absolutely no obligation.” Phil adds that The Rug Studio offers the design community and their clients exceptional service, true wholesale pricing, and unmatched quality and selection. “Our large inventory of room-sized rugs is unmatched in Kansas City,” he says. “We sell newly woven area rugs, which are made in such countries as India, Nepal, Pakistan, Armenia, among others. Since we only sell to-the-trade and are not open to the public, interested clients should ask their design professional to bring them into our Overland Park showroom.”
Phil adds that many area rug businesses only sell from small rug samples, so their clients have to make a purchase decision based on a small sample. “This can lead to disappointment when the room-sized rug arrives. Also, one of the most common mistakes made by consumers is purchasing an area rug that is too small for the room. A design professional will be able to size the area rug correctly, which will ensure that consumers are not disappointed with the final look of the room.” The Rug Studio’s beautiful hand-knotted rugs are made of all wool or wool and silk and provide luxury and endurance for decades. The Rug Studio also carries hand-tufted and hand-woven rugs, sold at a lower price point than hand-knotted rugs. All rugs are sourced from direct relationships with weavers and domestic suppliers, paying special attention to the social concerns under which the rugs are woven and only working with weavers who abide by strict child labor regulations. With homeowners continuing to desire flooring made from hardwood, laminate, tile and marble, the demand for coordinated area rugs remains strong. “I started my career by working on my own home during 2008 when times were tough and I had to scrape by but still Growing up on a farm in the Midwestern plains of Salina, Kansas, taught Tamara Day, a creative homegrown do-it-yourself kind of girl, ways of finding old, dilapidated homes in her area to turn into beautiful spaces. Her father, Ward Schraeder, was her original teacher and still works with her today. Tamara and her crew transform big, old houses she finds at bargain prices. While respecting the integrity and history of each home, she integrates modern design, function and style to the space, which is ideal for today’s families. “I started my career by working on my own home during 2008 when times were tough and I had to scrape by but still wanted a great design,” she smiles. “I was able to save here and there, and there we had it, our first Bargain Mansion! I love working on old homes because I think the challenges in an old home are what makes each space have character. It’s really hard to put character and charm into a brand-new build. It’s the work around that give you character.” Her interior design, furniture, décor and lifestyle business, Tamara Day Design, was born out of this initial inspiring experience. Day shared they have a lot of design projects going on currently for private clients, both residential and commercial, that she is excited about. In addition, she has worked with RTA Outdoor Living to create a signature outdoor kitchen. Her Cottage X Collection adds a timeless, classic and charming touch to any home.
wanted a great design.”
She also recently teamed with RoomMates Décor to create a collection of peel and stick wallpaper. Her collection features a range of designs, from bright bold patterns to calming neutrals, giving any space that designer’s touch. Add to that her four new rug collections, Kaleen Rugs. The first collection, Juniper, is now available for purchase. She also has a partnership with Quorum and Cyan Design to create a collection hard-wired lighting, ceiling fans and decorative accessories this year. When asked for tips she would give people desiring to design their homes, she comments, “I think the best trend I see happening is people designing what they like, not what’s on trend. I believe the best design always comes from the personality of the home and homeowner. Quirky is good, and color is fantastic!” She truly has her dream job, but it’s a lot more work than it looks on the show. Her own house was her first ‘Bargain Mansion,’ and that is when the executive producer of the show approached her, and as they say, the rest is history. “We have 10 episodes coming to the Magnolia Network this spring, and I’ve got to CONTINUED >

say, some of these homes are my favorite we’ve ever done!” she relates. “So much inspiration you’re going to love it. You are also able to shop everything you see on the show on tamaraday.com.” Part of Tamara’s fulfillment comes from her husband, Bill Day, who she married in 2000. Their four children, Henry, Bobby, Thomas and Nora, keep her on her toes and have plenty of ideas for their busy mom! She reiterates that no idea is a bad idea, and her daily challenges are what inspire her to find more old homes in the metro area to bring back to life and restore. New Year’s resolutions will continue to weigh heavy on people trying to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes in everyday routines, but a Leawood health food restaurant is making it easier for people to stay on track by serving up a health-conscious menu made with some of the best organic ingredients available. Staci Cross is the proud owner of Enjoy Pure Food + Drink and while her restaurant is known to serve healthy food and help people achieve personal health goals, her mission is to educate people on the positive impacts healthy eating can have and making it easy to sustain that mentality. “What I was trying to achieve was a large variety of plant based healthy food. I was running around the country, and saw I could get a cold press juice or a bad smoothie with yogurt and orange juice anywhere, and realized we need more healthy food options than just a salad or a plate of hummus,” said Cross. Enjoy Pure Food + Drink currently offers a variety of menu options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all made with select organic ingredients, which Cross says are carefully sourced to ensure customers are eating nutritionally-dense food with every bite. “I am so particular with every ingredient that walks through the door,” said Cross, “most of our customers in the health community know this, so they count on us and trust us.” Some of the restaurant’s best selling-items are their warm bowls like their ‘Take On the World’ which is packed with red and white quinoa, an array of vegetables like kale, broccoli and beets, healthy fats such as almonds, hemp seeds, avocado, and showered with a tasty ginger-miso dressing. The bowl is gluten free, vegan and organic. It’s actually their #1 seller. “I think that’s why people feel good when they come here because we are so intentional about serving from the heart, and to really lift people up because it goes with the healthy food,” said Cross. Cross says her cold-press juices also rank high in popularity, because each juice is crafted to meet specific nutritional needs, and can help customers CONTINUED >

recover after a long workout or during a cleanse. There are seven varieties of ‘Enjoy’ juices on the menu and each has a shelf life of three to four days to ensure enzyme benefits are at its peak upon purchase. “People worldwide drink cold-pressed juice because of the live enzymes that transport all the nutrients throughout your body. Enzymes are so important. It’s a primary reason why people drink cold pressed juice instead of juice you buy off the grocery store shelf. It’s not only because they’re drinking healthy vegetables and fruits. It’s because of the live enzymes,” explained Cross. Drinking without the guilt is another option at Enjoy Pure Food + Drink. Alcoholic drinks and craft cocktails are notoriously known for their high calorie intake and added sugars that can often lead to weight gain. However, Pura cocktails bring to the table a clean cocktail experience. Cross boasts there are no refined sugar, syrups, artificial flavors or dyes in her cocktails which are mainly a blend of fresh-pressed juices, home-made infusions and fresh ingredients. Their craft cocktail varies from a healthy take on a classic margarita, to a seasonal bourbon mixed drink and a variety of organic wines and spirits. “We know that our customers like a cocktail, or like a glass of wine with their meal, and we just want it to be as healthy as the food that they’re eating,” said Cross. As for what’s next Cross says she’s focused on potentially expanding her businesses and continuing to bring healthy food options to as many people as possible. One thing is for sure, she continues to focus in on the Midwest; an area she says is craving for healthy food options. “We serve about three to four hundred people a day. It’s not just a niche,” said Cross. “I think that Kansas City was definitely hurting, starving for more healthy food options, and when we expand, we want to go where people need us.”

Diamond hoop earrings represent an important purchase by and for women who develop their jewelry wardrobes over time. Some are very small, like huggies, and worn daily. Others are larger and worn primarily for daytime and evening events and especially for weddings. I have always designed my diamond hoops to fit the customer... their length, width, whether diamonds are set only outside or inside and outside, whether they dangle and move or remain stationary and of course their comfort, reflected by their weight on the ear for periods of time. Diamond hoops can be beautiful shimmering jewelry. Most are not trendy; rather they represent classic adornment, easily seen by all when a woman walks into a room.

floral bowl SPRING
Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring Spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday– give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside. Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For an extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!

SUPPLIES • 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet • spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional). • 6” bowl (cereal bowl size) • floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch). • 12” square cut chicken wire. • wire cutters • garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire. • clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do). • lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional).
PREPARATION & ASSEMBLE • First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-f loral elements used to assemble a f loral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the f lowers are built into to hold each stem in its place. • Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl. • Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later. • Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one. • Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens. Stuck with broken, leftover blooms from creating your floral bowl arrangements? Don’t discard those flowers just yet! Simply arrange leftover blooms and a few ornamental grasses onto a cake to elevate any tablescape. Even though the blooms are arranged out of water, they will look fresh for hours (especially when using roses and carnations). Enjoy!

3 Hot Trends
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY
in Kitchen Design
A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.
TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.
WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.
CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
