LIFESTYLE LETTER
Letter from the Editor
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Zach Traphagan | zach.traphagan@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Jeron Traphagan | jeron.traphagan@citylifestyle.com
As a native Kansas Citian, I have such pride and love of what our city has to offer and how we have grown to be a destination that boasts a multitude of craft beer, barbecue, art, culture, shopping, professional sports, music, and more. Kansas City pride is a common thread in our community, and sporting our local KC made gear and frequenting our favorite local purveyors is not lacking. As much as I love what our city has to offer, the people are truly what make our town special. That signature Midwest charm and friendliness is what stands out the most to visitors and residents alike. I lived in another state for a few years right after I got married, and while it was an incredibly gorgeous place to live, the people just weren’t the same. You all are what makes this city so special. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. With busy schedules, it is easy to let our talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests. Remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. Love,

Forever Royal by William Rose
ARTICLE BY REBECCA STOLTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Chances are if you’ve stepped foot into any of Kansas City’s most popular destinations you’ve experienced the magic of art consultant Paul Dorrell. He has curated art collections for KU Med, Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Royals, St. Luke’s Health System, Overland Park Convention Center, K-State and many more. His global reach extends to places like Europe, Australia, Hong Kong and Tokyo. His resume boasts accomplishments such as the National Soccer Hall of Fame, Texas A&M, and Disney World. But if all of those places have escaped your attention, then maybe it was simply a mural, perfectly placed on the side of a barn that you passed by in Johnson County that took your breath away. If working with big names like Marvel Studios and Warner Brothers or renting out a selection of artwork to AppleTV for the newest Ben Stiller flick hasn’t gained him notoriety then his philanthropy surely has. Not to mention that he is also the owner of the prestigious Leopold Gallery + Art Consulting in Brookside. Not too bad for a local boy from the Midwest! Paul grew up in old Leawood, and he credits much of his success to an “excellent education in Johnson County and a privileged and wonderful upbringing.” After college he spent years living the life of an adventurer—from working on a fishing boat in Alaska to a horse ranch in California—traveling the world while always staying involved in the arts in some form. Paul achieved tenure at Connecticut’s prestigious Hill-Stead Museum, and by all accounts he could have stopped there and been considered a success. After meeting his wife Annie back home in Kansas, he decided to put down some roots, and he set to work developing the cultural growth of the Kansas City Community. He intentionally chooses local Kansas and Missouri artists

to feature in his gallery and to work with, highlighting not only the area's talent, but the diversity of the Midwest. Again crediting his education, he says, “What I am achieving now directly correlates to where I came from.” Not only is he grateful for his fortunate upbringing, he is paying it forward. The Leopold Gallery Educational Foundation has raised more than $250,000 for local academies that were otherwise underfunded. These funds have also contributed to giving many students the opportunity to go to college through grants and scholarships. Paul’s goal was simple—to mentor inner city kids and to introduce them to college—kids who might not otherwise have had the exposure. “It is important to remove the intimidation factor for them,” he says. Supporting the community and giving back has been a priority for him throughout the years. He believes if you want to see change, you have to do something about it. And if you thought for a moment that his wanderlust was gone, think again. Reveling in the old adage of “work hard, play hard,” Paul says at least half of the year finds him traveling both for work and for leisure. “To have a change in setting does wonders for my sensibilities,” he says. “A different tempo or pace is essential to my creative process.” He counts routine as the killer of creativity. And what could be further from routine? Well, he has just been informed that he has made the first round for the TV show Survivor. So when he’s not talking about art, riding a motorcycle or spending his time rescuing German shepherds, you might just find him hanging 10 on a surfboard somewhere, or who knows, maybe even popping up on your television on Wednesday nights. Get your life back!
BioBalance Health’s goal is to bring women and men back to vibrant health. Aging begins in the fourth decade and coincides with the loss of testosterone production. Testosterone deficiency results in loss of libido, fatigue, depression, weight gain, and the beginning of the diseases of aging, like diabetes and high cholesterol. BioBalance stops aging where it starts, by replacing testosterone with the most physiologic method of T replacement, bioidentical hormone pellets.

Q: CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU GOT TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY AS A SUCCESSFUL ARCHITECT AND RESTAURANT OWNER? A: I was born and raised here in Kansas City. At a young age, I remember being interested in the houses and buildings I would see around me, and I would draw

them on blank pieces of paper from time to time. In around 5th grade when I found out there was actually a word for a person that drew buildings for a living. I was excited to be an architect. I did also consider music as an alternative pursuit, but late in high school I decided to go ahead and take the leap to go to architecture school. I graduated from the University of Kansas School of Architecture in 1994 and have been working as an architect ever since. My first job out of school focused on the design of sport venues (stadium and arenas), and I have been focused on the design of those types of buildings ever since. The decision to become a bar owner came to me much later in life. That decision was inspired by my international travels and the opportunity I had to travel to some of the best restaurants and bars in the world. In 2016, I decided to open a high-end cocktail bar on the Plaza with a design and drink menu that rivaled some of the best cocktail bars in the world. The Monarch opened in August of 2017, and in 2018 we won The Best New Cocktail Bar in the country as voted by NightClub and Bar.
Q: WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF YOUR BUSINESSES? Photograhy ByJason O’Rear
A: The inspiration to open my own architecture business came in 2007 when I left the firm I had started my career with in 1994. I had a vision for a small “boutique” design firm that focused solely on the early design phases of large sport and entertainment projects around the world. My company is very unique as compared to my competitors, but the personal attention and creativity that my team brings to our work really speaks for itself.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PROJECTS THAT YOU’VE WORKED ON SO FAR IN YOUR CAREER? A: I get asked this question often, and I always answer by saying picking my favorite project is like trying to pick my favorite child—I don’t think of things in that way. I love them all equally, and I have learned and struggled and delighted in all of them. I’ll answer instead by highlighting some of my recent projects we are most proud of here in the U.S., including Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for the NFL Raiders and Chase Center in San Francisco for the NBA Golden State Warriors. Other projects include stadiums and arenas in the U.K., Italy, Russia, China and Japan.

“My company is very unique as compared to my competitors, but the personal attention and creativity that my team brings to our work really speaks for itself. " Q: WHAT WAS IT ABOUT KANSAS CITY THAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR THREE BEAUTIFUL RESTAURANT SPACES, THE MERCURY ROOM, VERDIGRIS AND MONARCH BAR? A: The Monarch was inspired as the first of the bars by my travels around the world. Once we found the success and appreciation by the city, we felt confident to open additional concepts. Verdigris in Leawood and The Mercury Room in the Crossroads are both the latest additions to our portfolio and are in partnership with Christian Moscoso, who directs the operations of all three bars. Without a good team and the confidence that the daily operations of the bars would not be a distraction to my primary focus on the architecture company, I would not have opened the additional bars after The Monarch. Christian and the management team of all the bars do an incredible job, and I’m really proud of them and what we have been able to do together.
Q: ARE THERE ANY FUTURE PLANS FOR YOU OR YOUR BUSINESSES? A: In my architecture company, we have some really exciting projects to look forward to both domestically and abroad. Within the bar business, we are looking at some new concepts to unroll in the coming year or two. Stay tuned! For more information on David Manica’s company and projects, visit manicaarchitecture.com.

Bamboo Penny’s A COMMUNITY FAVORITE
ARTICLE BY JESSICA GRACE
Food is about more than taste, it is about bringing people together. As soon as you walk into Bamboo Penny’s in Leawood, you breathe deeper and instantly begin to relax. While the atmosphere bodes of upscale excellence, it exudes the comfort and ambiance of knowing you have walked into a family establishment. Penny and her husband Doug have done an amazing job not just with food, but with the atmosphere. They had the vision for creating a wonderful restaurant that didn’t just have great food with ties to Penny’s upbringing in Thailand, but an opportunity for customers to sit, relax and reconnect over food. In Thailand Penny and her mom would cook and sell their creations from the family food cart, so from the beginning, Penny has seen and known about the influence good food can have on a person.

When asked why she does what she does, Penny explains that she recognized the power and voice of food, and the connection she feels to her past and family while getting to live out her dream here in the United States. Although they had the vision and the passion, they needed to add a member to the restaurant family, so they found Michael Werner, director of hospitality & operations for Leap Hospitality. This leadership team could bring the vision to life. One thing that was crucial to the design was to ensure that not only was the food connected to Penny’s history in Thailand but the ambiance and culture had to be present as well. This can be noticed through all the little details throughout the restaurant. The flowers, statues and plants were all hand-picked and placed by Penny herself. This acknowledgment of details is reflected in the food and placement of tables. You know that great conversations are going to happen here because they made the time and space for people to come and sit awhile. With its perfect placement in Park Place in Leawood, it is located right next to Barkley Square/The Ice, the green space where concerts are held in the summer and the ice rink is opened in the winter. so you can sit on their patio and have a glass of wine while listening to music. You can also make memories on their rooftop bar, The Bamboo Room, which has a retractable ceiling, beautiful fire pits and a full menu service up top. After taking the private elevator to the Bamboo Room, it’s easy to imagine making memories there, to envision what it would be like to sit there with friends for hours, enjoying the slower pace, laughing and trying one of their signature cocktails that alternate through the seasons. They really do believe that community is important and food is the key to ensuring that people connect. You can always get behind good food, but you can also get nervous when spice is involved. This is why Bamboo Penny’s is great because you can request whatever spice level you want, so no one in your party has to compromise! Plus, they have many gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, so no one should feel left out. Penny wanted to create a space for people to eat good food, gather around and stay awhile, and she accomplished that by sharing what she had, a love of cooking and community. You won’t want to miss this restaurant where you can take your loved ones and make some memories of your own!

Gift of Letter
Writing There is a lost art in letter writing that I wish to hold onto. In this speedy world where anything can be done lickity-click, a handwritten letter takes time and shows thoughtfulness. Much like a fingerprint, a person's handwriting- as elegant or clumsy as it may be- is as much a piece of them as the color of their eyes or the sound of their voice. The handwriting of a loved one that has passed or the writing of a child that time has aged will forever be treasured because of who they are, not how beautiful the calligraphy.

I invite you to join me in handwriting a letter to someone you care for this month. It could be as short as a sentence, as practical as a favorite recipe, or as light-hearted as a joke. Whatever is written, write it in your own handwriting as a gift to be treasured by the person you give it to.
WAX SEALS Since a handwritten letter is a gift then the envelope should be treated like wrapping one. Sealing a letter with a wax stamp is a beautiful way to turn a standard paper letter into the gift that it is.
SUPPLIES NEEDED 1. Wax Sealing Stick 2. Sealing Stamp 3. Match or Lighter
HOW TO APPLY A WAX SEAL 1. Light the wick and hold the stick parallel to the work surface. 2. Let wax slowly drip into a coin sized circle onto the paper. It’s tempting to angle the stick down to increase the speed of drips but avoid this as pieces of soot will fall into the wax and discolor it. 3. Blow out the flame and set the stick aside. 4. Press the sealing stamp onto the melted wax. Hold for a few seconds before lifting away. If it sticks, gently rock the seal back and forth to release. *Wax seals are able to be sent through the mail but you may consider an additional outer envelope to protect it from potential damage. creative planning for your future ARTICLE BY ALLISON SWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. “I was born and raised in Kansas City,” says Mallouk. “When we started Creative Planning in 2004, I never thought we would get the instantaneous reception that we did. It took off on day one and never stopped. Being based in Kansas City was quite by accident, but staying has been very
intentional. We have so many wonderful, educated people in the region and we are centrally located, allowing us to serve clients coast to coast. This has worked out well for us given some of our largest client bases are in California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois. We now have about 1,000 employees with offices in dozens of states serving tens of thousands of clients across the country. We couldn’t be better situated to serve our clients.” Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” CONTINUED >

Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every nineteen days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all time high. It’s normal, and inflation has a lot to do with it.” For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3 %. I t’s a g uaranteed 1 00% r ate o f r eturn, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Ma llouk says to st art with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” Life insurance and its role with investing has been a hot topic of financial p lanning. W hile Mallouk believes it’s a terrible investment, he believes it’s a necessity.

“We are planning led, meaning we get to know our clients very well prior to giving them advice. All our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance.”
“The best purpose for life insurance is the reason it was originally created: to provide money to loved ones if you die. Buy a simple, inexpensive life insurance policy which lasts for a term, say 10 or 20 years. Find out what your family needs to live a quality life if you are gone, and insure for that amount. This best fits families that don’t have enough in investments set aside to maintain a lifestyle in the event of the loss of a breadwinner, which is most people under age 60. Life insurance can also make sense when it comes to estate planning for the wealthy. Life insurance as an investment though is a terrible idea and not a good way to invest for future retirement goals.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. Trusts tend to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / L E AWO O D

that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” Creative Planning’s approach to private wealth management sets them apart from the rest. “Our clients have been our greatest allies and have really helped us grow our practice. I attribute that to the quality of our people, that we don’t own any investment products so clients know we are never trying to sell them an investment. We are always on their side of the table. I also think our clients really appreciate how far we will go to solve their problems, especially because we have the specialists to handle most issues in-house.” Managing approximately $100 billion in assets, this leading independent firm attributes its success to putting pieces together that people were desperately looking for. “First, people want a fiduciary, a strong team and are looking for experience. Second, we are planning led, meaning we get to know

our clients very well prior to giving them advice. Third, all our portfolios are customized to help clients accomplish their goals, rather than being constructed based on age or risk tolerance. We have seen a lot of investment success with our clients, and that goes a long way. Fourth, we were the industry pioneer and still the industry leader in delivering the family office to clients, giving them advice and implementation across all their key financial needs, from investments to planning and from legal to tax. Finally and most importantly, we have been very successful at attracting and retaining the best in the business. This is a people business and having the best people is key to delivering the best advice.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.

A WORK OF ART INTRODUCING ANTHONY HIGH

Many things have changed over the years for Kansas City native Anthony High Sr., but his love for creating artwork never will. He knew from a little kid that art was his passion, no matter what anyone said. “I was always told art isn’t practical,” Anthony says. “I never paid that any mind, I knew that the art thing was in my DNA.” Anthony specializes in paint and printmaking. He discovered his love for printmaking while going back to school for his graduate degree. He says one of his mentors introduced him to printmaking, which he wasn’t fond of at first.

“I thought it was kind of boring,” he says. “I remember seeing black and white images, and you go through these tremendous processes to get to it, and then I later found out that printmaking was a whole lot more than that.” He began gravitating toward a printmaking process called collagraph. “I love those creative, serendipitous moments where you have these happy accidents, and printmaking is such where you can do something exactly the same way and it’ll come out different when it comes out of the press,” Anthony says. He secured his first show by being noticed while doing street painting by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum who shared the same gallery space. “I was part of their first traveling show that’s been traveling for about 20 years now.” Much of his inspiration for his art comes from the Negro Leagues and Jazz genres. “I always felt like athletics and the arts kind of draw people together,” he says. “You could go to a jazz club back in the day, and it really didn’t matter what color you were, everyone was enjoying jazz.” Anthony is currently focusing all of his energy on the upcoming Parade of Hearts event. He is one of 123 artists selected out of 700 design entries who will design a giant statue of Kansas City’s well-known heart. Once completed, the hearts will be placed around the city. “My pieces are so involved, I’m going to have to live in the studio to meet this deadline, but you know what, it’s exciting,” he says. Anthony was fortunate to have two of his designs accepted. He’s excited to be a part of an event that aims to show the nation the best of the heartland. “When we picked up the hearts, and I’m in my 60’s right, but we felt like little kids,” Anthony says. “That’s what I really like about art because no matter how many curtains you open with art, the next curtain is just as exciting.” Throughout his career as an artist, Anthony has taught art at various schools, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum. “I’ve always been a very animated teacher,” he says, “and I’ve taught everything to everyone from preschool to college, and I found out when you have that enthusiasm it translates into your students.” The more he taught art to students, the more he realized it was fueling his inspiration. “You learn from your students,” he adds. Throughout his life, Anthony has traveled to major art galleries across the country. Every time he’s in a new city he makes a point to check out the local art scene. His trip is incomplete without it. By seeing artwork in so many cities, he says it just goes to show how special the art community is in the Midwest. “The Midwest artists stack up against artists anywhere in the world,” Anthony says. “So often, the Midwest is kind of looked at as flyover, but when it comes to art we are very much not flyover.” To see more of Anthony's art, visit anthonyhigh.com
