outdoors as the temperature warms and the days grow longer. In the coming weeks, I can’t wait to enjoy dinner with friends on the patio of my favorite local restaurant, to go on a bike ride with my family, and to visit the farmers’ market to pick out my produce! This month we bring you our Eco issue in honor of Earth Day on April 22. Inspired by the infinite beauty of Mother Earth—and our desire to preserve, protect and love her— we’ve compiled an array of eco-conscious and eco-friendly people and places making a difference right here in our community. From eco-minded businesses to spring decor, this issue is a celebration of all things Mother Nature. Whether or not you have a green thumb, we hope the stories in these pages invoke feelings of love and gratitude for the wonderful world we live in—and the wonderful people in our community who strive to sustain it. Not sure where to start? When you’ve finished enjoying this issue, we encourage you to recycle it so it can be turned into future magazines. After all, that’s what makes the world go ‘round! Happy spring, Leawood!

TRUE FOOD KITCHEN BELIEVES DELICIOUS DINING AND CONSCIOUS NUTRITION GO HAND-INHAND. Without sacrificing flavor, creativity or indulgence, their menu was inspired by the philosophy that food should make you feel better, not worse. Shannon Keller, True Food Kitchen's chief marketing officer, is excited for Kansas City to experience their vibrant culture and robust culinary scene at their newest restaurant located at the Country Club Plaza. “True Food was co-founded 10 years ago by Dr. Andrew Weil, a graduate of Harvard Medical School and leader in the field of integrative medicine,” Keller says. “Weil wanted to show people that there’s no opposition between food that tastes good and food that’s good for you. He created the anti-inflammatory food pyramid as a way to help those seeking the necessary foods needed to fight inflammation and assist in achieving and maintaining optimal health. Dietary choices play an important role in inflammation, the root cause of many serious illnesses including heart disease, cancer and even Alzheimer’s disease. Simply put, our menu includes lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices including turmeric and ginger. Eating this way will provide steady energy and ample vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, dietary fiber and protective nutrients.” Their menu changes with the seasons, allowing guests to enjoy ingredients at the peak of their freshness. “We believe food was meant to be grown and nurtured, so we’re inspired by the freshest, in-season ingredients,” Keller says. “We know where all of our produce is grown and abide by the Environmental Working Group’s guide to source 100 percent organic fruit and vegetables as necessary. All our restaurants serve 100 percent grassfed, grass-finished beef, wild-caught and sustainably farmed fish, antibiotic-free and hormone-free poultry as well as organic milk products. We strive to make choices with the environment and community in mind by supporting innovative, sustainable and fair trade businesses. We offer popular food staples, but with nutrient-rich ingredients for a healthy twist. For example, our teriyaki bowl consists of quinoa, ancient grains and fresh vegetables, and our grass-fed burger is covered in a flax-seed bun and complemented with a kale salad and roasted sweet potato versus french fries.

“Among our signature dishes, you’ll find many fan favorites throughout the healthful salads, hearty bowls, house-made pizzas and starter selections. Our seasonal scratch bar features delicious, hand-crafted cocktails, freshly pressed fruit juices and a selection of beer and organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines by the glass and bottle. Our food looks and tastes terrific. There’s something for everyone.” Guests can customize anything to meet dietary needs or preferences. “We celebrate variety and encourage any number of modifications including substitutions or omissions for those on a gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, keto, paleo, low-sodium diet or more severe allergies,” Keller says. “Each of our servers are trained to offer recommendations and suggested modifications should you wish to make any of our dishes fit within your lifestyle.” With restaurants across the country, Kansas City will be their 27th location. “The restaurant features artwork and décor celebrating the local community that’s inspired by our brand’s mission and values,” Keller says. “Local artist Phil Shafer created a Kansas City-inspired mural that incorporates landmarks in the shapes of seasonal fruits, vegetables and culinary utensils featured in our kitchen.” Community-centered events like yoga and cooking classes will be held in-house. “Our restaurants are gathering places of enrichment— they’re open and bright with lots of windows, have a mix of community seating and areas for more intimate gatherings. Our open kitchen means that our passionate chefs and our quality, creative ingredients take center stage. We host events year-round that are available to all guests in our dining room, including fitness and yoga classes followed by a group brunch, community dinners that celebrate new ingredients and their health benefits, cooking classes, gardening workshops, educational seminars and lifestyle workshops. We look forward to partnering with local fitness and yoga studios as part of our ongoing commitment to our True Wellness series.” For those wanting to live a healthy lifestyle, Keller says it’s not just a choice. “It’s a journey that starts with simple changes. Each time you dine in is an opportunity to further your journey toward healthy living. The meaningful experiences and warm hospitality that we deliver to our guests are not just the cornerstone of True Food Kitchen, but the foundation for a life well lived. It is because of our loyal guests in each one of our local communities that True Food Kitchen continues to thrive.” 16

Jesse also sees what they do as a form of modern farming. “There is something very natural in our human DNA that we desire to grow and produce things,” Jesse says. Jesse says the family has always been tight-knit and loves working together, adding that there is no one else he would rather partner with in business. He says their goal is to find the best products on the market with the best genetics. The company focuses on helping customers find success with plants, discussing their needs and finding a product that fits their interest and lifestyle. Sometimes this means telling a customer they shouldn’t buy a particular product or steering them to another product that might work better for them.

choosing the perfect indoor plant Picking out the prefect plant for your house can be tricky, but Jesse suggests asking yourself the following questions when considering an indoor plant purchase:
What plants do you like and find interesting?
Where are you going to place the plant in your home, and how much lighting will it receive in that location?
How much time do you have to water the plant and give it attention?
What type of design and style works best for your home?

HELLO SPRING
(CON TI N U ED)
How To Arrange Flowers STEP-BY-STEP
01 Gather your materials. + Scissors + Vase + Plant food + Flowers of choice — You’ll need greenery, primary flowers and secondary flowers for the arrangement.
02 Remove any extra leaves to create clean stems. It’s okay to leave some foliage, but remember that you’ll also have greenery to fill in any extra space.
03 Measure the flowers against your vase of choice and cut to size. Be sure to cut the stems at a diagonal. This will let the flowers soak up more water and help them stay alive longer.
04
Fill your vase half full with water. You’ll want to
change the water every three days.
05 Pour the plant food into the vase and stir.
TIPS FOR VARYING VASE SIZE + When arranging flowers in a tall or cylinder vase, it’s important to consider which flowers you are choosing. The vase itself is already large and makes a statement, so you can choose just a few types of flowers. The flowers you decide on should have long and sturdy
06
Start by criss-crossing your foliage to create a
base. Forming this lattice pattern will create a sturdy base for your other flowers.
07
Add in your focal flowers, making sure they are
spread out. The focal flowers are the ones you want to highlight. They may be the most colorful, the biggest or just your favorites.
08 Add in any of your secondary flowers. Secondary flowers tend to be smaller and will round out the flower arrangement.
09 Rearrange or fill in as needed. Remove any petals
stems. Find one colored variety that can be used as the centerpiece and then fill in neutral toned secondary flowers around it. + When arranging flowers in a medium vase you have the most freedom. Medium vases usually have a wide opening and can fit many floral varieties. Try picking a colorful main and secondary flower and then filling in the rest of the vase with textured neutral colors. With this many flowers, it’s important to criss-cross the stems or even tie them with twine so that they stay in one place. + Arranging flowers in a small vase looks best when there are a few bright statement flowers. To create a more dynamic look, choose contrasting colors and a variety of textures. With a smaller vase, it’s not necessary to fill the base with greenery because there won’t be as much extra space that needs to be filled in.
that are wilted and adjust the foliage so that it fills in any empty spaces.

ERICA KRZYKOWSKI AND DESIGN ASSISTANT, ANGELA WEDEKIND ARE THE MASTERMINDS AND THE CREATIVE FORCES BEHIND PRAIRIE HOME DESIGNS. With their attention to detail, eye for innovative design and limitless creativity, this duo packs a powerful punch to transform any space. Principal designer Krzykowski makes it her personal mission to make each client’s space feel beautiful and reflect their unique and personal style. They are sharing two outdoor patio and front door looks with us to inspire us as we freshen up our outdoor living spaces this spring. "We chose to use the same sectional as the foundation to show how changing the small things can make a huge difference," explains Krzykowski.
Leawood Lifestyle | April 2019
Modern The first look is monochromatic and modern. Simple is best when creating this vibe. The key is to not use too many different colors, but layer in texture for an inviting atmosphere. They used black and white as their palette and added interest and coziness with the drapery panels, patterned rug, comfy pillows and a throw for chilly evenings. Adding an inviting chair to curl up with a book and including a tray for entertaining has this space ready for when the weather improves and neighbors come out, so we can all get reacquainted! The modern front door incorporates a runner layered with two mats to create interest. "Think creatively about what kind of rugs your front space might need," Krzykowski says. "A runner was used here because of the double doors, but you might want a 30x60 rug with an individual mat on it for a single entry door." Pro tip: When it comes to modern planters, bigger is better, so pick something that will fill your space well.

Bohemian The second look is colorful and Bohemian. Fun, vibrant colors and lots of woven items were used for this whimsical look. "We started with a tall egg chair as a statement piece to establish the look and added battery powered hanging lanterns for interest up high," Wedekind says. "Don't forget about the space above your head. It's a great place to make an impact." Bring the indoors out with this look. Think about what you would want inside your house and find a way to bring it out. Included here in this look are poufs for kids to sit on to play games, and an umbrella stand for guests who visit on rainy days. There is also a boot tray for days when the kids have been out playing in the mud. At the front door in this look, they include lots of color and pattern. The runner is a buffalo check, and the mats are floral to add interest. Layer here and be daring.

ESIGNING AND CREATING PLANTERS IS A METHOD OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION THAT HAS BECOME A UNIQUE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY FOR JULIE CRUZ WITH ADORN PLANTERS. In the past, the former elementary school teacher has used her creativity as a vendor in The West Bottoms at Restoration Emporium where she has transformed furniture with paint
and sewn pillows and table runners. She also uses her creativity in her own backyard by trying out new and unique plants. In fact, her favorite backyard garden is a sensory garden with a mix of annuals and perennials including lavender, lemon balm, lemon grass, curry and patchouli. Given her interests, joining her sister Elizabeth in business with Adorn Planters simply made sense. Elizabeth opened the business in Oklahoma City five years ago while working a full-time job because she always wanted to start her own business, and this opportunity allowed her to have flexibility to spend time with family. It grew slowly, and Julie joined her and brought the business to Kansas City in the fall of 2017 because she is also passionate about gardening. Julie said both women owe their love of gardening to their parents who are lifelong gardeners. “I absolutely love curb appeal and the instant gratification that comes with planting,” Julie says. “To me, taking a space to its full potential and being able to use my creativity to make that happen for my clients is a dream job.” Julie says she is able to help clients when they may feel unsure of the sizes of plants to use in the planters or when they may feel intimidated going to a nursery and picking out the best plants to use given the wide variety of choices. “To me, planters are a piece of art,” Julie says. “I love picking flowers and plants that work well with my client’s space, the shape of their planter and the color of their home. I enjoy the way I can use plants as a creative outlet. With plants, I can add a pop of color or texture to take an ordinary space and add drama, serenity or even whimsy. I thrive on the instant gratification from the transformation of the planters and the added curb appeal.”
THREE COMPONENTS OF AN EYE-CATCHING ARRANGEMENT In her planters, Julie likes using flowers that she calls thrillers, spillers and fillers. Here’s what that means: + The thrillers create height and become the focal point of the planter. Good examples of summer thrillers include Kimberly queen ferns, caladium and majestic palm. + Spillers are used to spill over the side of the planter and add extra drama to the arrangement. Some of her favorite spillers include sweet potato vine, fan flower, vinca and inch plant. + Fillers are used to fill in the space between the thriller and the low spiller. Her favorite summer shade fillers include impatiens, begonias, caladiums and coleus. April 2019 | Leawood Lifestyle
