That love of children continued into college as I chose a profession where I could work with kids daily and became an elementary school teacher and later middle school teacher. Kids have a way of making what’s really important in life very clear. They generally say what they mean without having that adult filter, their imaginations and creativity are endless and their sense of wonder is refreshing. As those childhood years turn into adolescent years, they begin to formulate their worldview and make sense of the things around them. They start to make decisions about what they want to stand for and what they want to contribute to the world around them. It is also a tough time of insecurities, emotions and trying to figure out who they are. Like all families, my own four children are all so different from one another. They each have unique gifts and struggles. Something beneficial and somewhat unexpected to me has been watching how much of an impact having a family pet has made on my children. I knew it would help them learn responsibility, but I have been surprised by some of the other ways that the addition of our trusted dog, Stella, has contributed to their lives. She has been the perfect companion for them. She is a source of comfort when hard

Q & A w i t h N e st I n t e r i o r s TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS SPACE AND WHAT THE GOALS WERE FROM THE HOMEOWNERS WHEN STARTING THE PROJECT. The homeowners wanted a space for their son that felt special and unique just for him. They wanted it to be a room that he could grow with over time, while still infusing the interests and hobbies he has right now. WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION COME FROM FOR THE COLOR SCHEME AND THEME? This little boy is really interested in outer space and astronauts. We wanted to take a funky take on that so it wasn’t too juvenile. The parents also have a really colorful, mod, fun aesthetic that we wanted to bring into the space as well. WHAT TEXTURES OR PATTERNS HELPED MAKE THIS SPACE DYNAMIC AND INTERESTING? We chose this really amazing wallpaper that kind of set the tone for the space. It’s mod, playful, and grounding to all of the quirky pops of color. We played off the paper with fabrics and patterns that felt a little extraterrestrial. DID ANY PART OF THE PROJECT START AS ONE THING AND END UP GOING ANOTHER WAY THROUGH THE CREATIVE PROCESS? The project really evolved from a simple kids room refresh, to a custom and unique space that truly reflects the taste and personality of the boy who uses it. When finalizing the install, we placed some of his toys in areas throughout the room as a prop for photos. He ended up loving hav-

WAYS TO HELP NURTURE KIDS’ HEARTS FOR ANIMALS IN NEED It seemed like a simple enough plan: Go to the pet store. Purchase fish tank water neutralizer. Go home. But our five-minute visit soon turned into a longer, more emotional trip as my son began naming mice to bring home, and my daughter fell in love with Bowser, a handsome tuxedo cat. On the ride home, tears streamed down my daughter’s face because we didn’t adopt her kitty. My son couldn’t understand why it wasn’t a good idea to bring home his newly beloved mice, Twinkle and Roxie. The fact that we already have a kitten and a fish didn’t matter to my kids. All they knew is that they loved animals, and they wanted to do more to help them. So I reached out to several Kansas City-area organizations that provide assistance to needy animals and rely on the support of volunteers. They shared ways we can all realistically help, short of bringing all the fuzzy little creatures home to live with us forever. (Sorry, kids!) Keep in mind the following non-profit organizations require volunteer training and a supervising adult for children. Each has its own policies for volunteers’ safety. It all started when founder Danny O’Neill picked his first bean in Costa Rica and fell in love with coffee. In 1993, he air-roasted his first batch in the basement of his Brookside home, forever changing the coffee culture here in Kansas City. To keep up with demand, the business has expanded since then to nine successful cafés and a stateof-the-art production facility that is crowned with the iconic DC-3 aircraft. The aircraft honors the city’s aviation history, exploration and spirit of adventure, and is named after O’Neill’s mother, Betty. O’Neill says he drinks an average of 25 cups of coffee a day. His favorites include their light bodied Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and their new exotic 25th Anniversary Blend that’s crafted with a heavy body and notes of blackberry, cherry and subtle cocoa undertones. “The Ethiopian Yirgacheffe is probably one of my single all-time favorites—it smells and tastes just like blueberries. Watercolors and pastels grace her sketches that interpret mood and transport the viewer into the moment. “It is the softness of a line and the serendipitous journey to bolder and bolder strokes that leads to discovery,” she has said of her own love of drawing. More recently, Susan’s work has gone to the dogs – literally. She has been exploring watercolor techniques in her new paintings, “Best Friend Series,” now on display at the Images Art Gallery in Overland Park.

“Funny story,” Susan reveals, “our lab used to devour watercolor paper whenever I left it out.” What began as a frustration with their beloved Suede, ironically inspired her first dog portrait. Capturing a pet’s unique personality with color and texture became a thing. As friends and family requested ever more renderings, Susan realized she loved the playfulness and genuinely happy expressions of dogs. The entire group of playful paintings will be on display through July after which a few paintings can always be found at Images Art Gallery. From boxers to dalmations, poodles to hounds, rescue and mixed breeds alike, Susan loves to paint the dog’s essence. She finds watercolors allow the loose, fun expressions to jump off the page.

“I feel like he is looking at me… it could not be any more perfect,” said one of her most recent commissions. “I look and then I can’t take my eyes away.” Susan understands. In a military family that moved 18 times in 27 years, dogs and family provided the grounding force for her life and art. She knows what it’s like to have to say goodbye to someone or something and how a painting can be a visual translation of memory. From southern roots to worldwide adventures and now a 10-year resident of Kansas, she also learned how to pare down and adjust her materials to her environment. THE TERM "REST HOME" HAS BECOME AS OUTDATED AS EIGHT-TRACK TAPES, BELL-BOTTOM PANTS AND LAVA LAMPS. With a jam-packed social calendar, challenging workouts and meals to rival fine restaurants, who has time to rest? "This is not your grandparents' nursing home," said Peter Crane, executive director of Senior Star at Villa Ventura in south Kansas City. "That is the biggest misconception about senior living. In reality, it's a lifestyle, with a wide range of activities, both on campus and out in the greater community." These activities include everything from secure walking trails to visits to cultural attractions around the city. Residents can exercise, get their hair done and even visit a pub without leaving the property. Above all, however, the experience is all about family. "Children, grandchildren and other family members are here to visit every day of the week but especially on weekends," he said. "Our food is so good that many residents like to invite their families to eat with them instead of going out to a restaurant." Villa Ventura, located at 12100 Wornall Road, was developed in the mid-1970s. Senior Star, which also owns 14 other facilities, acquired the property in 2003. It features 173 apartments, ranging from studios to two-bedroom, and from 400 to 1,200 square feet. Self-sufficient residents can choose independent living, while those who need extra help can opt for assisted living. "We draw a wide range of people from both sides of the state line," Crane said. the challenges of growing older or lifestyle changes where housekeeping and cooking are better left to someone else." Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, Villa Ventura caters to individual needs. Home health services and therapy are available on site, so residents can get the care they need without leaving home. Villa Ventura meets the stringent accreditation standards of the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, so residents and families know they are receiving the best care available. We not only serve healthy meals but also cater to specific dietary needs, such as low salt, whenever possible." Residents can work off their meals through a number of activities, such as walking, Zumba Gold classes developed specifically for older adults and even an innovative stationary bicycle called BikeAround. "This equipment combines exercise with a screen where you can input any address and bicycle through that neighborhood," he said. "You can ride through Paris, for example, and many residents like to bike through the neighborhood where they grew up." All of the apartments at Villa Ventura are month-to-month rentals. Staff members will help potential residents determine how to fit the expenses into their budgets, and they also can assist veterans in applying for financial aid from the Veterans Administration. Kansas City is fortunate to have an abundance of retirement living options for all lifestyles and budgets, Crane said. Doing a bit of homework well in advance of a potential move can be a good idea. "The most common thing I hear is, `I'm not ready for this yet'," he said. "Start having a conversation with your children when you retire. It's never too early to visit and ask questions." I WANTED TO DESIGN A SPACE FOR MY SON THAT WOULD ALLOW HIS CURIOSITY AND HIS IMAGINATION TO GROW. I didn’t want bulky furniture taking up most of the room, so I choose this fun open bed frame to begin my inspiration. The main elements were the black and white, natural wood elements, and an outdoorsy adventurous theme. I wanted to add color and worked with the orange accent pieces we already owned. The wood planked wallpaper adds so much texture — it’s so realistic looking. I love mixing patterns, and the rug is such a dynamic piece in here and makes a huge impact. The bed frame really steals the show and is the focal point of his room. We gravitate here with all the kids to read before bed. It just feels so cozy, and it’s easy to pile in with the bed being on the floor. This project was a fun one. I didn’t start from scratch but used many things we already owned. I always suggest to shop your house first and see what you can use before buying new. I even pull things from other rooms and repurpose them to give them new life. Some of the most beautiful jewelry from the 19th through the mid 20th century was designed for fabulous Russian Green Demantoid Garnets, rarer than fine emeralds, bright, vivid and vibrant green. The necklace was made in England about 1960. The "Flame Pin/Pendant" is Victorian. The garnets and diamonds appear to "dance" as the eye moves down the row of flames.
