transform by simply decluttering and getting rid of stuff, rearranging what we already have in our home and bringing in a few new pops of color. I love decorating and remodeling, and, as I have shared before, having a contractor as a father has definitely influenced my love of transforming spaces. He taught us all how to do it ourselves, and, to this day, my dad will come over in a heartbeat to help with a project that needs an extra hand or is out of our league. As much as I have learned about remodeling from him, one of the biggest lessons that my parents taught me in life was how to make a house a loving and inviting home. When it’s all said and done, what really matters most about my house is how people feel when

DIY

MINIMALIZE YOUR SPACE BECOMING A MINIMALIST MEANS LIVING MORE WITH LESS. IT'S NOT EASY, SO HERE'S A GUIDE TO GET YOU STARTED. ARTICLE SHERYL HADLEY FIVE WAYS YOU CAN SHOW THE CLUTTER IN YOUR LIFE WHO’S REALLY IN CHARGE:

1. Just get rid of these things—seriously. Why are you keeping them? 2. If you’re so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to begin, try starting with one small area that haunts you the most—a section of kitchen counter, a small tabletop, etc. 3. Pick up five things and return them to their proper location. These should be items you’re used to seeing deposited on counters or floors: mail, the dog’s leash, a newspaper section, your daughter’s hair clip, random sport socks. If you don’t have a designated place for them, think about one that would suit, and start using it all the time. 4. Give yourself the gift of a “maybe” box that you can put things in for now. Sometimes, even though we know we should get rid of something, we can’t quite let it go. Look at the random selection you’ve kept a few months down the road—chances are it will all go straight to donation. 5. Be a more conscious shopper so that you’re not filling your decluttered home with more clutter. Whenever you see something you want, add it to an ongoing list with the date you first saw it, and then revisit the list 30 days later. You may find when you check back that the urge to purchase it has gone. And if you do decide to get it, at least you’ve given the item the time and consideration it deserves. Living in a cluttered home or trying to work in a cluttered office is an exercise in frustration. Car keys get swallowed up, you can’t locate your important report in time for your meeting, or you replace something you can’t find only to have the original turn up shortly after. Isn’t that the worst? Make sure that never happens again by getting clutter under control ... one unpaired sock at a time. SIX THINGS YOU CAN PART WITH

• Trash • Broken items • Duplicate objects • Items that don't match your decor • Gifts you never bonded with • Any gadget sitting unused for a year 20

Land of Nod, and it was the first piece I found, so I started to pick pieces to match the dresser. The wallpaper and the mirror where the next two items found for the space. The wallpaper was a labor of love! As dramatic as it might look, it doesn’t overwhelm you when in the room. The wallpaper itself makes a statement, so I kept things minimal yet cute throughout the rest of the space. I love how it plays off the mirror and all the gold accents in the room. It really helped set the theme of the room. It is peel and stick and removable, which is definitely a bonus. An oversized wool felt elephant adds a whimsical touch to a corner of the room.

ROOTED KC Leawood Home Makeover 28

Leawood Lifestyle | March 2018

WITH LANIE AND BRENT DRAPER

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN DESIGN AND ABOUT WHAT YOU DO. It all began when my husband and I started to establish who we were in our own home by experimenting with design. It didn’t take long to realize that we had found our passion of revitalizing homes and that we wanted to share it with others. Long story short, we began to receive phone calls asking for advice and if we’d be interested in home renovations. As we became rooted in our business, we quickly expanded from two to five, bringing what we’re passionate about into the homes of others. We are now a full-service design, build and real estate firm eager to help our clients from home search to housewarming. WHAT ARE YOU SEEING AS THE BIGGEST CHANGES COMING FOR TRENDS IN DESIGN RIGHT NOW? Mixed metals are all the hype right now! Just like the days of buying a complete bedroom set are out, so are predictable finishes. Mixing metals is a great way to add visual depth and style to any room. We are also excited to see richer colors like dark greens, blues, camels and charcoal pushing their way back into homes. Their warmth is grounding and adds sophistication. HOW DID THE VISION FOR THIS PROJECT TAKE SHAPE? WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION? At Rooted, we want each home to tell a different story. Homes should showcase something fresh, and our love for the constantly evolving industry. The first impression of the Overbrook house was an outdated potentially modern home tucked away in a quiet Coloradolike oasis. Our inspiration came from its existing aesthetic that transformed the Overbook home into the modern cabin we sought it out to be.

ROOTED KC

(CON TI N U ED)

WERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES OR SURPRISES AS YOU DUG INTO THE PROJECT? With any project comes challenges and surprises. During the final walk-through of the Overbrook home, we came across busted pipes and a flooded basement. The best part was realizing the stairs leading to the basement had already been ripped out, making it impossible for us to see anything further. Regardless, we purchased it, knowing it would be a great home. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE PROCESS? Hands down the early design meetings are my favorite! Collaborating as a team and bringing all of our experience together to gain new ideas is very rewarding. Watching the transformation process of the home in its current state to the plans we have on paper and lastly, the final stages of the home, doesn’t get any better. WHAT ASPECTS/FEATURES ARE THE HOMEOWNER'S FAVORITE ADDITIONS WITH THIS FINISHED TRANSFORMATION? The Overbrook home was actually just listed on the market. Our staff at Rooted knows that the future homeowners will fall in love with every detail we embedded in this home—from the wide plank oak floors and Cambria countertops to the vaulted ceilings. The large kitchen and grand living areas are perfect for entertaining, while the master suite tucked in the back of the home creates an oasis of its own. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OUR READERS WHO MAY WANT TO TRANSFORM A SPACE IN THEIR HOME? The most important thing to have prior to transforming your own space is a game plan. Don’t rush into buying things just to fill a space—that’s when it gets expensive. Always purchase with a purpose and buy quality items that will serve your family and lifestyle long-term.

Kitchen Design Gallery A FUSION OF LOGIC & ART

Shawn McCune

SHAWN MCCUNE OF KITCHEN DESIGN GALLERY HAS USED HIS MASTERFUL SKILLS TO EARN A REPUTATION IN THE METRO AS A DESIGNER WHO DIGS DEEPER, SCALES HIGHER AND THROWS IN A DASH OF GENIUS. As a certified kitchen designer, artist, carpenter and remodeler, Shawn solves problems with innovation. His design ability has been described as the “perfect pair of creativity and function.” Coupled with a “deep concern” for his clients’ personal needs, Shawn is an inspiration. And it doesn’t stop with kitchens. Offices, baths, closets, bars, laundry rooms and more have won him accolades for craftsmanship and problem-solving. It’s where logic meets art. Shawn’s team of professional, insured subcontractors bring their experience to every renovation. “We do extremely high-quality work for the people who actually live in the space, tailoring it to their needs today, and helping them realize their needs for tomorrow,” Shawn says. When homeowners are faced with the cost comparison of whether to love it or list it, Shawn says that remodeling is often the better deal. (Some exclusions apply, such as the age and health of the homeowners.) “I’m looking for the jar of variables,” Shawn says, “In it is the homeowners’ current tastes, evolving tastes, lifestyle, furniture, budget, children, pets, etc. My job is to take those variables and create solutions that work best for my client.” Shawn says many homes have ergonomics that don’t make sense, whether in traffic patterns, the location of laundry systems or the landing zones. “I’m always honest, so people don’t waste their

But being a forward-thinking designer is often a balance between pleasing the client and leading the client. As a visionary, Shawn sometimes has to persuade clients to make a change they may not have considered. “It’s so gratifying when clients later say how happy they are with a suggestion I had a hard time convincing them to do,” he says. “It validates the vision.” Clients aren’t the only ones validating. Shawn has national NKBA first-place award for Universal Design and a national NKBA first-place award for his stunning Lenexa showroom. The showroom sells high-quality cabinetry and appliances and provides clients with a full spectrum of options.

Last year, Shawn and his team remodeled the main floor in the home of David and Kerry Peak of Lenexa. “We’re incredibly pleased,” Kerry says. “We’ve had many family gatherings since then in our new incredible space. Everyone feels comfortable and is in awe of the details. It’s hard to combine comfort with upscale, but we feel Shawn accomplished that in his talented and signature style.”

“The magic of the ranch is that it’s private for your group, and there’s so much to do right there on the property, people don’t need to go anywhere,” Rick Prill, Red Rock Ranch owner and operator, says. “That’s what facilitates people connecting in a really natural and special way.”

At Red Rock Ranch, guests don’t feel like they’ve come to a sterile retreat center, Rick says. “If feels like you got to use your uncle’s estate for the weekend,” he says. “It’s very personal.” Each property on the ranch possesses a character all its own. The quaint Homestead Cabin with its hand-hewn log walls was built in 1874. The Cottage, a Prairie Victorian home, built in the 1920s, features a large wraparound porch for relaxed reading or conversation. The Ranch House, completed by Rick in 2001, features a saloon bar, a parlor and a billiards room, harkening back to the era of Colorado railroad baron’s mansions.

Guests taking a stroll from one dwelling to another along the lighted stone path will enjoy benches, outdoor sofas, waterfalls, dining tables and the manicured gardens and green spaces of the landscaped grounds. Property amenities include a saloon bar, billiards room, outdoor pool, spa, sauna and workout room. Activities on the property include sand volleyball, horseshoes, hiking, croquet, billiards, table tennis and a variety of games. Some guests are perfectly content to relax at the ranch while others seek adventure in the nearby Sangre de Cristo Wilderness area where opportunities for hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting and horseback riding abound. This range is home to many of Colorado’s "fourteeners," mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet, so it offers both a spectacular view and a wilderness challenge. Families will often bring cherished recipes to cook and share together in one of the three fully appointed kitchens whereas others choose to relax and hire a personal chef for their entire stay.

“The ranch is really a blank canvas, and you can fill it however you want to,” Rick says. “I just provide people with resources.” Getting there: The ranch is an hour and 15 minutes from the Colorado Springs Airport and 2 1/2 hours from the Denver International Airport.

PARTING THOUGHTS

SMALL BATCH GARLIC & DILL PICKLES Makes 5 pint jars.

INGREDIENTS • 3–4 cucumbers • ½ red onion, sliced and cut in halves • 3 cups apple cider vinegar • 3 cups water • 4 tablespoons of sea salt • 2 teaspoons of organic cane sugar • 1 head of garlic • I bunch of fresh dill • 10 peppercorns • 1 tablespoon chili flakes • 1 tablespoon celery seeds

DIRECTIONS Slice cucumbers into wedges. Bring water and vinegar to boil; mix in sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool. Meanwhile, prep the garlic. Peel the garlic cloves and then give them a smash. To assemble the jars, first, stack in the pickles, and save some room for the other flavors and vinegar mixture. Next, add in about four pinches of dill and two to three cloves of garlic. Add four or five halved, single slices or red onion per jar. Next, give a pinch or two of the celery seed and crushed pepper. Once the vinegar mixture has cooled, pour it into the jars making sure to cover the top of the cucumbers. Seal jars well. Refrigerate for one week. Pickles will keep four to six weeks.
