Letter From The Creative Director

W

ith June being our men’s issue, coinciding with Father’s Day, I wanted to pay tribute to a phenomenal man in my life: my dad. My father is a man of few words, but when he speaks, people want to listen because he is full of wisdom and love. He listens to understand first and doesn’t always have to be understood.

He is a natural peacemaker, and his humility is second to none. His incredibly humble and understanding nature is my favorite thing about him and constantly makes me so proud of the man he is.

He seeks to understand difficult people and can find the good in absolutely anyone.

My dad is a natural giver and will step up to help whenever there is a need and always acts like it isn’t a big deal at all. The need for credit for accomplishments or generous gestures does not exist with him, and he often gives in secret. He is so laid-back and positive, and his low-key, patient personality has always made me feel so secure. I don’t think I have ever seen him stressed in my life, and that says a lot for someone who raised 10 kids.

Growing up my dad was always so much fun, and was known to go to great lengths to make up extravagant games, scavenger hunts and treasure maps for us to explore. He took an interest in any activity we were involved in and coached all of us in multiple sports. He was always present, always supportive and always ready to listen, even in our frustrating stages. I am barely scratching the surface about the man he is, but his influence in my life and the lives of my entire family will have an impact for generations to come. His character has made a lasting impression on all of us and is something we all strive to emulate.

Thanks to all the men in our community that make a positive impact, big or small, on those around you. While you may not realize it in the moment, your contributions make a big difference.

I hope you enjoy this issue. We had fun putting this edition together!

G

eorge Nigro has been announcing at auctions and chanting for charity since his teens.

Still going strong nearly 40 years later, he and his band of brothers spend several nights a week calling for cash in a city full of philanthropists.

The Nigros’ energy and effort have paid off handsomely.

“We estimate that we’ve raised more than a billion dollars over the years,” George says. That’s a lot of cold hard cash for some people-pleasing partners to rake in.

“Basically, we’re just good manipulators.”

The Nigro Brothers Charity Auctioneers typically take the stage on Thursday and Friday nights, sometimes twice on Saturday. The team includes brother David Nigro, former schoolmate Toby Tyler, auctioneer Ron Stricker and rodeo pal Ben Aldridge. Cut from the same cloth, the Western wranglers wear crisp white shirts, matching themed ties and belt buckles the size of fists. It’s always cowboy hats: light straw for summer, black felt in winter. The men enter an auction arena with a high-noon strut, giving the audience the sense they are about to be asked to hand over their money.

For the American Heart Association’s Go for the Red, these salesmen recently raked in a million dollars, selling trips, dinners with chefs and many things fun and dynamic. The crowds, often dressed to the nines, stand ready to donate tens, hundreds, thousands.

“In April, we raised close to $400,000 for Children’s Place,” George says.

He starts out the bidding with “Wha’cha gonna give? How much ya gonna give? Will you give me 50?” While George takes the mic, ringmen David, Toby, Ron and Ben scan the crowd for interest. A raised hand, subtle nod or finger salute signals the bidding has begun. With brisk banter and lightning-quick offers, the Nigros sell their first item and get the show rolling.

When they are not rustling donations, you can find them at their Nigro's Western Stores on Shawnee Mission Parkway and Merriam Lane. Their father, Tony Nigro Sr., opened the original Nigro’s Western Store in 1956. He also operated a horse and cattle auction in Linwood, Kansas. While taking a course at the Missouri Auction School, Tony brought home his study guide, and George got roped in, too. At age 12, he started learning the cattle rattle, a smooth song which pitches the price and ups the ask harmoniously.

The Nigro brothers conducted their first auction at their high school in Shawnee (now Saint Thomas Aquinas). They learned early how to boost bets and raise eyebrows with their cajoling approach.

“We try to make it fun for everyone. We want to get your attention, get your money and give it to charity,” George says.

They worked for free that first night and have never asked for a raise.

“If it’s for a good cause, we can’t turn anybody down,” George says.

“And when you’re free, people love you!”

On a rare slow night, George sweet talks the cautious crowd.

“Come on folks; it’s only money! And it’s for the kids!”

avid Beal's contemporary and classic oil portraits not only convey a likeness of the sitter, but it’s said his work captures the spirit and character

of the individual subject. Beal began his professional painting career while in his teenage years in upstate Ohio. At the age of 16, he was recognized by President Gerald Ford for his large-scale murals, depictions of key events in American history, that he was being commissioned to create and install in libraries, schools and other public spaces. That recognition triggered additional mural and portrait commissions, paving the way for a career in the arts.

At age 18, Beal moved from his hometown in rural Ohio to New York City to attend the Art Students League of New York. While at the Art Students League, he was mentored by Robert Beverly Hale, curator of American paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrator Robert Emil Schultz and pastel master Daniel Greene. After two years in New York, Hale died, and Beal shifted his focus from fine art to commercial art. He moved to Columbus, Ohio,

and completed his commercial arts education at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He launched a design studio while still in college, and then was recruited by Hallmark Cards here in Kansas City. He worked for Hallmark for over 23 years as an illustrator, creative director and then business leader in the U.S and Japan. He left Hallmark in 2016 and is now painting full time.

Throughout his career, he maintained a fine arts studio, creating commissioned oil paintings, murals and portraits for commercial and private clients and fine art galleries. Notable portrait commissions include Steve and Dana Demetriou, owners of the Cleveland Cavaliers; Bob Roth, chairman of the board for Hillyard Chemicals; San Diego Pastor Moses Vegh; Dr. Douglas Girod, executive vice chancellor for University of Kansas Medical Center; Robert Marchesi, founder of DeMarche Associates; and Troy Paino, president of Truman State University. He is an active member of the Oil Painters of America as well as the Portrait Society of America. Beal currently lives in Overland Park with his wife, Carol, a jewelry designer/maker.

Beal's paintings have won many national and regional awards. "Profile of Alexander" was juried into the 100 best representational paintings of 2014 by Oil Painters of America and was shown at InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas; "Bangkok Jam" and "Portrait of Ryle" were included in OPA’s Western Regional exhibits, and "Mariah’s Rose" won the Juror’s Award at the Foundry Art Centre in St. Louis. Beal’s work has been featured in The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine and

American Artist’s Magazine. His work has appeared at the Society of Illustrators in New York and

many galleries in Kansas, Colorado, Missouri and Texas. His drawings are part of the permanent collection at the Art Students League of New York. Beal also has served as executive chair of the Friends of the Arts Foundation in Overland Park, and he is active in teaching and mentoring high school students in the area.
