Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Creative Director

T

his month we are featuring beautiful homes in the area that reflect different styles of design. Whether it be modern, contemporary, farmhouse, vintage or traditional, interior design is multifaceted and can change the feel and mood of a space. The clean, sleek lines of modern feels fresh and professional, whereas a vintage or farmhouse style gives a feeling of warmth, character and history. If you are anything like me, you may enjoy and appreciate several different styles of design. I tend to gravitate toward farmhouse, but I also love pops of modern and industrial. I have a slight obsession with redecorating and love to find ways to reinvent a space.   Sometimes it's as easy as changing out the colors in a room and other times it's a complete overhaul. Thankfully, my patient husband usually plays along with the remodeling projects I get myself into at home.  I am a DIYer by nature and love to rehab homes and repurpose furniture. Having a dad as a contractor is great because he taught all of us how to do some light remodeling, so it is in my blood. My husband and I used to rehab homes, and It was so fun to walk into a house and dream about how we wanted to transform the space into something new. It’s amazing what new paint, fresh finishes and knocking down a wall or two can do for your space. Now that I have four children, those days of flipping homes are behind me, but I still love looking through magazines of beautiful interior design to get inspiration for a possible future project.  I loved so many of the ideas in the homes we featured this month. I hope you enjoy looking at the art of their design and maybe you will walk away with a new idea or two.

uestion: Homeowners are often unsure if they should move or spend money to update their current home. “Will renovating my home be worth the money,” they ask? “Will updating to today’s styles increase the value of my home enough?” Answer: The truth is that it all depends on the updates you choose. Paint, flooring, countertops and cabinets that reflect the current trends are a must when marketing your home for resale. However, depending on your area and the current housing market, a major renovation may not bring you an immediate return on your efforts.    This featured home was built 12 years ago by a family who has since grown out of their home’s Tuscan-style design. They longed for a more transitional style with a design that made better use of their first floor. They contemplated selling and moving into a new home, but they love the friends they’ve made and the schools that are in their current neighborhood. After much consideration, they decided to stay in their existing home even though the updates they desire may not bring an immediate return if they CONTINUED > were to sell today.

Their design of choice includes an updated kitchen with a new island, countertops, backsplash  and stunning new pendants. Transforming the existing cabinets with a fresh coat of paint yielded a cost-effective solution while providing the sleek gray and white colors they desired. The fireplace was gutted, redesigned and stacked with real stone, a new mantel was installed and the new television was positioned above for comfortable viewing throughout the living room. The home was painted in a warm gray, and the floors were refinished with a dark brown coffee stain, setting the standard for today’s sophisticated styles. At the end of the day, the new design, furnishings and accessories gave this family their dream home all in the comfort of the neighborhood they love, which is an option you too should consider when ready for a new style. Porter is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute and the State University of New York whose large abstract paintings and works on paper have been on display in galleries and through dealers throughout the country for 20 years. “The idea that wallcovering itself can be just as handmade and unique as the large, abstract paintings I create really appeals to me artistically,” Porter says.

“In our Palace Hotel installations, our abstract painting is seen and enjoyed by thousands of people every day because of the location.” Despite their rise in popularity, Porter and Cochran continue to be highly involved in

y husband knew when I was repainting the living room of our previous home for the fourth time in four years that I needed a new challenge. He stumbled on this home, and one

month later I had a new, very large project. As this is our fifth home, experience has taught us to bite the bullet and get the large projects done immediately so we can enjoy the space and fine-tune the details as we get a feel for the end result we want to achieve.

lthough the previous owners had meticulously maintained the home, it hadn’t been updated since it was built 30 years ago. We are DIY people, so our first project started with a jackhammer and removing floor tile. We then moved onto removing all of the carpet in the home and replacing it with hardwood flooring. Countless hours were spent removing wallpaper in most of the rooms, updating and adding lighting to each room and updating the kitchen. Each project we tackled was focused on updating the space while maintaining the charm of the home that attracted us to it. As I started filling each room with furniture and artwork, it amazed me that this home just swallowed the furniture from our previous homes. The unique dimensions of each room forced me to focus very closely on scale and proportion. The main furniture pieces I selected from Restoration Hardware. My husband and I have collected  furniture for the past 20 years from estate sales and auctions to find unique pieces that give our home a warm and inviting feel.  The main lamps in our great room were found at an estate sale of the previous owners of the old Muhlbach Hotel downtown. They were actually in the hotel lobby for many years. Our kitchen table was the foyer table of the pre-renovated Marriott on the Plaza. The

chandelier and sconces in the dining room came from an old home in Quality Hill that was renovated into commercial space. The art collection in our home comes from our travels. Not only are they pieces that we love, but they have special meaning and memories attached to each one. Over time, I have filled my home with items that we love. It has allowed me to purge all filler pieces and live in a space that feels truly authentic. We have many years of projects ahead of us to create our final vision, and doing them together is what we love to do.

hen visual artist and local resident Barbara Cosgrove sought to expand her audience beyond a limited number of patrons purchasing her original paintings, she decided to transition to designing lamps which she viewed as sculpture – art that could be designed, manufactured and readily accessible to anyone. “The greatest compliment an artist could be paid is for a patron to take art into their home and live with it,” says Cosgrove, quoting ceramicist Ken Ferguson. So more than 14 years ago, Cosgrove began designing simple clay and metal lamps in her garage studio. She crafted lamp bases of clay pots and also added a few lamps with bases crafted of silver candlesticks and old books. “I didn’t sell one clay lamp,” Cosgrove says. “That’s why I gave people options. I didn’t know what would sell. To this day I don’t know what’s going to sell.” Early on, orders for Cosgrove’s book and candlestick lamp bases were overwhelming, and she began building her industrial design business with tenacity and creativity. Today she is a leading designer in the lighting industry with her lamps, fixtures, furniture and CONTINUED > accessories gracing homes around the country.

For Cosgrove, inspiration as a visual artist comes from everything she sees in the world around her. “I read that creative people have very messy minds. This answers the question constantly asked of artists ‘How did you think of that?’ Cosgrove says. “Ideas that most people compartmentalize get all scrambled together and end up as creativity.” Cosgrove describes the style of her design line as her personal style—things that she likes. Her home is a collection of things she is drawn to, an eclectic blend of modernity and tradition all accented by lighting from her own line. Cosgrove entered the marketplace and began having her designs manufactured internationally almost from the very beginning.  Many 40

lamps are assembled in her Kansas City shop, and all shades are made in the same U.S. factory that made her first shades years ago. Even as her business has grown and her style has evolved over the years, Cosgrove keeps the ‘Alicia’ candlestick lamp as first in her inventory as a nod to where she began, even if something new comes ahead of it alphabetically. While Cosgrove is located locally, her inventory is open only to those with a wholesale license. Her client list that now numbers in the thousands includes many designers, interior decorators, commercial projects and boutique hotels.

eawood has always been known for its charm and classic style, and there’s no better window covering than plantation shutters to emanate those traits. Unique for their versatility, shutters have the ability to elevate and cozy up a space at the same time. Budget Blinds of Leawood and Overland Park helped this home achieve the perfect look, from product selection  to measurements to installation. Budget Blinds is your go-to shop for window treatments and shutters. David and Sheree Thein own this Leawood home. “The experience was great, they were super nice, they didn’t take long, and they were neat in the way they went about it,” Sheree says. “The installer was efficient and professional.” These 3 ½” louvered shutters came with a classic decorative frame for a trimmed look, and a divider rail to easily direct light and control privacy. "I would not hesitate to recommend them to my friends," Sheree says. There are many options when it comes to shutters: louver size, divider rails, frame types, tilt bar placement, etc. When it comes to selecting the perfect look for your home Budget Blinds will examine the four main reasons to cover your windows—light, privacy, heat and aesthetics, to find the perfect fit for you. 46
