Lifestyle Letter

Letter from the Creative Director

F

or as long as I can remember, I have always been a person who likes to come up with new ideas. I am a bit of a dreamer and a problem solver, and I constantly find myself thinking up new business startups, inventions or ways to make products better. I can’t help it, and I have a hard time turning it off, and often times I wait too long, and someone else has the same idea and creates it first. (I’m still kicking myself about that Google thing. Ha!)

My brother is an entrepreneur, so I often times text him ideas of things he should do. Some are great ideas and some aren’t. He is a risk-taker and visionary but makes very smart decisions in the midst of just jumping and going for it. It has served him very well, and I admire him greatly for his adventurous and confident spirit. Throughout the years he has encouraged me to pursue some of my ideas, but the ones that have stuck with me have always been the ideas that I am personally connected to and have a passion towards. In our February issue, we wanted to share with you some of the local entrepreneurs and artists that started with a little idea and have turned that dream in to a reality. Whether it is a business owner, musician, artist or maker, each person featured took an idea and a chance and jumped. I admire the work of each person we had the privilege of interviewing this month, and their hard work, creativity and dedication to their trade is impressive and inspiring. We all have gifts and talents that are unique, and it’s never too late to explore those gifts and use them, whether it be with the world or with just those around us that we love. If you are sitting on an idea or dream, I want to encourage you to not give up on it. You never know what could come of it till you try.

Leawood Duo Creates App for Kids ARTICLE ALLISON SWAN

Rebecca Pashia is the Founder and CEO of Rain Boot Media, which is locally based in Leawood. Pashia is a professional artist by day and a writer by night. She has written stories for all ages throughout her life and is known for her ARTichokes business, which brings creative activities and fine art to the local community. Her passion is to inspire creativity in people through different mediums with a fresh approach. "I love to use both visual and fine arts every single day. “When a friend of mine said that she was giving her toddler an iPad Mini for Christmas last year, I beamed,” Pashia says. "I had been waiting for kids, parents and teachers to embrace technology so I could develop my ideas for children and make ‘interactive’ picture books." In June 2016, Pashia pitched the idea to her friend, Tim Kelley, who saw the potential and convinced her to start a company. Kelly joined Pashia to launch Rain Boot Media as the CFO. Pashia then reached out to her friend, Noelle Stoffel, who showed paintings at ARTichokes in Mission Farms. After hearing about the book apps Pashia wanted to create, Stoffel jumped at the chance to join the team as their first illustrator.

games that provide opportunities for critical thinking. For even more fun, their second app Pass A Present allows you to create personalized presents to send via text. Take a picture, record a voice message and wrap up your present to send to your loved ones. Their new app Ladybug Band will be released on February 6th. Written by Pashia, illustrated by Stoffel and with music by Pashia's son, Mason, this interactive storybook is perfect for parents and grandparents to read with their preschoolers ages two to five. Pashia wrote the story when she was 21 years old. "I had wanted to buy a creative lullaby cassette tape for a friend having a baby and couldn’t believe the products on the market were all just remakes of old songs," Pashia says. "I wanted something that would stimulate imaginations, so I made my own lullaby tape, and ‘Ladybug Band’ was the favorite." It was such a hit that Mason listened to the tape every single night as a baby, which most likely gave the 22-year-old Nashville musician and songwriter inspiration to write music for the app. The illustrations are rich in color and texture. Pashia painted palette knife backgrounds for the pages while Stoffel created the content in a two-dimensional style. The book app rhymes and includes items kids can touch, trace and shake on each page. At the end, play the hit song written and produced by Mason, "Coconut Jamboree." Kids can become a bug, play an instrument and record their own performance so everyone can be a musician. Rain Boot Media is currently a home-based business seeking to expand their Kansas City team in the near future to bring their stories to life on electronic devices. Pashia says she has content for three solid years of creative book app production and plans on launching four book apps each year. For more information, visit their website at RainBootMedia.com. All apps are available for download in the app store. 20

Family Memories Stirred by PBS Miniseries ARTICLE JENNY WOLFF PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

24

Leawood Lifestyle | February 2017

S

unday evenings this winter, when James Wornall and his family gather to watch

the PBS Civil War miniseries Mercy Street, it feels as if they are watching part of their own family’s history. James is the great-grandson of John Wornall, a prosperous farmer and one of Kansas City’s earliest residents. Now in its second season, the television drama tells the story of how many antebellum homes were turned into makeshift hospitals during the war. Troops on both sides took over houses, turning the space into operating, recovery and convalescent rooms for injured soldiers. The historic John Wornall House is located at 6115 Wornall Road, near the center of the Battle of Westport. The house served as a battleground hospital for Union and Confederate soldiers. The conflict, which occurred October 21-23, 1864, was the largest battle west of the Mississippi, and it marked the end of the 10-year conflict between Missouri and Kansas. “I lived in the house with my grandfather, parents and brother from my eighth-grade year on. My most vivid memory is of mowing the lawn, which took all day!” James Wornall says. “I knew that the house had been used as a hospital, but I’m not sure I fully understood the magnitude of what had gone on.” Wornall, 79, now lives in Overland Park with his daughter, Desiree Wornall Rivas and her family. The Kansas City/Wornall story began in 1843 when James’ great-great-grandparents, Richard and Judith Wornall, moved here from Kentucky looking for better business opportunities. After their first successful year of farming, Richard purchased 500 acres of land in the area now known as Brookside. A few years later, Richard gave the land to his sons, John and Thomas, and later returned to Kentucky. Thomas died of cholera in 1849 and John became the sole landholder. John’s first wife, Matilda Polk, died a year after they were married. In 1856, he married Eliza Johnson, the daughter of the Rev. Thomas Johnson, who founded the Shawnee Methodist Indian Mission. In 1858, John, by now a wealthy farmer, built a large columned house, with bricks made on site. He wanted a home that would be a statement, a landmark house on the road south

says.

“Confederates spent the night in the yard; then Eliza cooked them breakfast. As they started to eat, they were rushed by Union soldiers, who finished the breakfast.” In a memoir, Eliza’s son Francis wrote, “Dad often said the Battle of Westport was over a breakfast, for (General) Price ordered his advance, and (soon) our home became the hospital for one of his divisions. The beds were knocked down, pallets laid close to each other, all of the hospital arrangements of that time quickly placed within reach of the hand of those who were to administer help and in a few hours, the house was full of wounded and dying.” Medical treatment of the day was rudimentary. A soldier who sustained a gunshot wound to his chest or abdomen was left on the battlefield to die. Surgeons, doctors and nurses had the medical expertise to save only soldiers who had leg or arm wounds, and that treatment often resulted in amputation. In the PBS drama, soldiers groan in pain

and scream in agony because whiskey was their only form of anesthesia. In the 1860s, the use of antiseptic practices was virtually unknown. Many who died succumbed to diseases such as dysentery, pneumonia, typhoid fever and tuberculosis. Illness, food shortages and the hardships of battle resulted in the loss of thousands. In the Battle of Westport, 30,000 fought and 1,500 died on each side. “Growing up, we heard stories about how the bodies of soldiers were passed through the dining room window and stacked along the side of the house,” Wornall says.

WELCOME HOME

(CON TI N U ED)

As a couple of food and film connoisseurs, the homeowners envisioned a large, openplan main living area where they can cook, socialize, watch movies and make amazing memories with family and friends. The owners’ design preference tends toward simple lines and clean spaces. Their bright, airy home completed in June 2016 is transitional meets modern. A sense of old world chic is achieved through Carrara marble countertops, a classic beveled tile backsplash in the kitchen and 19th century English aged iron pendants from Restoration Hardware above the kitchen island. The pop of Essex Green on the kitchen island as well as the home’s styling and furnishings give the space a modern feel perfect for a young growing family.

hen a condo-dwelling Chicago couple decided to build on a quiet street

in Leawood Hills West, they sought green space, great schools and a firm with whom they could completely entrust the building process as they tied up loose ends in the windy city. They selected KOENIG Building + Restoration, to begin building their home in May 2015. “Ninety-nine percent of this build occurred while we were still living in Chicago, and we loved working with KOENIG,” the homeowner says. “I think what made things so easy throughout the entire process was their organization. At the very beginning of the project, Scott, Molly and their teams had all the deadlines listed for us. There didn’t seem like there was any panic because we already knew when we needed to have decisions made on finishes.”

WELCOME HOME

(CON TI N U ED)

“We put thought into the spaces where people gather,” the homeowner says.

“We want people to come over and feel comfortable. If you put your feet on our coffee table, we won’t mind.” The homeowners appreciated the fact that KOENIG brings in designers from the beginning of the building or restoration project, lending a unique level of care and service.

“Molly and Melissa were a huge asset during the process,” a homeowner says. “There are so many

choices out there and it can get overwhelming. They really helped us narrow down options in tile selection and lighting, giving us the confidence that we were making the right choices.” KOENIG design consultant Melissa Bowles, whose services are a complimentary part of the firm’s building experience, says the selection of the Peralta Round Chandelier from RH Modern for the great room was a fun moment in the design process—an instant YES from both homeowners. “We want you to love your home and the process to build it too,” Bowles says. CALVIN ARSENIA

F

or nearly everyone, music seems to have an emotional power in our lives that can take us to deeper places than other art forms. This is the passion that lives within Calvin Arsenia Scott. Music is the art that lives inside him and it moves him, it inspires him, it challenges him, and he works tirelessly in hopes that his music will do the same to you. Better known within the music world as Calvin Arsenia, he grew up locally and that is where his love for

music began. Arsenia recalls the very first time he performed in front of an audience. He was twelve years old and he was given the opportunity to sing at his church. “I was so comfortable singing, and it just felt right,” Arsenia says. From that moment on, he knew he was made for music. He was surprised that he got such a positive response, and that encouragement lit a fire in him to pursue this newfound love. Though Arsenia is an accomplished musician, singing is his true love.

In fac t, he says, “I play because I sing, and sometimes it’s necessary to play an instrument with the band.”

He began playing the piano in middle school and quickly picked up the guitar and stuck with these two instruments for a decade. He has since learned to play the banjo, ukulele and now the harp. His first real gig was at a Starbucks in 2009. He laughs as he recalls how he made such a big production of it all. He poured himself into every aspect of the environment. The show, for Arsenia, was about the whole experience, not just the music. He went to great lengths creating a holistic atmosphere—building a topiary, constructing it inside the coffee shop and hanging some of his art on it. For him, it was all about connecting with his audience through the music and creating an atmosphere to make that as meaningful as possible. CONTINUED >

He loves to be surprised by other artists, partic ularly those who are unconventional. Sufjan Stevens and Sigur Ros are two of his favorites.

42

Leawood Lifestyle | February 2017

Arsenia graduated in 2008, and his musical pursuits since then have taken him around the world. He performed with a band called Trelese at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2010 and 2011. While there the second time, he was approached by a pastor of the church they were partnering with and was offered the opportunity to return fulltime to work with the church and reach out to the city through his music. In Edinburgh, Arsenia’s music opened doors for him to perform before politicians and alongside a group of African singers. He connected with the people of the city, and he saw how music could take down walls and build bridges between those of different classes, races and cultures. Of the music that inspires Arsenia the most, he says, “anything I have to listen to multiple times.” He loves to be surprised by other artists, particularly those who are unconventional. Sufjan Stevens and Sigur Ros are two of his favorites. Some of Arsenia’s more notable local shows include playing before more than 1,000 people at Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts as well as the Record Bar in the Crossroads District for his album release party. The night of our interview he was set to play at the Kansas City Museum. He currently is working on a tour to begin traveling and performing throughout the United States, Canada and Europe in 2017. He describes his current musical style, with the harp as his primary instrument, as “urban folk.” He likes to consider himself an artist who plays a “haughty” instrument in an approachable way. Arsenia’s most recent album, Catastrophe, is an exploration of the fleeting nature of romance and is an honest assessment of where he was when he was writing the songs. He describes it as very cathartic, and Arsenia believes it will be for the listener as well. He hopes his music inspires people to think beyond the moment—the here and now—and to explore and be comfortable with their own emotions. Through his albums and immersive performances, he strives to curate transcendent moments in others when they least expect it. You can learn more about Arsenia and his music at
