hen I was a child, I believed my dad could make absolutely anything. He was a contactor and electrician by trade, and growing up in a large family, he often was knocking down walls to build on another room or remodel the existing structure to accommodate more people. If my mom could dream it up, my dad could build it. His craftsmanship didn’t stop at remodeling and home repairs. He was constantly making things for my siblings and I to enjoy. My first memory of him constructing a hand made toy was when I was in kindergarten, and I so badly wanted to play the piano. We didn’t have one at the time, so he made me a little keyboard out of wood, and I adored it. We later got a real piano, once they realized I truly loved it, but the memories of playing on that little homemade keyboard has always stuck with me. Probably the most favored and remembered toy that my dad made for the family was an electronic, light-sensored states and capitals learning game. We all thought it was the coolest thing ever created. He continues to build things for all of us from time to time, and has managed to instill a love of craftsmanship in each of us.

More than 5,100 runners, walkers, and volunteers turned for the 14th Annual Head for the Cure 5K Run & Walk at Corporate Woods. This year's goal was to raise a a half million dollars and indications are the goal will be reached. Funds raised support brain cancer research, treatment and prevention.

any of my favorite childhood memories revolve around Halloween. Not so much the candy (I was a saver, not a binger) but the costumes. If we ever had a store bought costume, it was not one I remember. Growing up, my parents encouraged creativity in all things, and Halloween was no exception. There were wigs, face paint, paper mache heads and often the problem of incorporating long johns at the last minute (it was Iowa, after all). There were certainly favorite costumes, like the furry bunny costume my mom made that was handed down from kid to kid, or the two-person horse costume my best friend and I made out of huge ice cream tubs (I was the hind end). Then there was the mummy costume, where my dad wrapped me in hospital gauze from head to toe, not thinking about the possibility of having to use the restroom. These were certainly not works of art, but the process of making them was full of laughter. Once my husband and I had our own kids, we wanted to provide opportunities for them to create similar memories. I admit, when my kids were really little, and time and energy was at a premium, I welcomed the convenience of party store costumes. When the kids were about 5 and 8, I found a hilarious set of costumes for The Incredibles on-line. It was the perfect number for our family and the kids bought into it immediately. Our debut was at our church's Trunk or Treat event. I remember feeling so foolish stepping out of the car with my spandex super hero suit, but the squeals of laughter and photo requests made it all worthwhile. The whole family loved it, and the kids had more fun staying in character and handing out candy than trunk or treating for themselves.

Each year thereafter, in the beginning of October, the kids and I start brainstorming costume ideas. We work together deciding who will be what, collecting and buying supplies, assembling, fitting and adjusting until everyone is satisfied. There are no patterns involved, just rough sketches and some Pinterest inspirations. Some things I make from scratch, and other pieces we purchase. I am not a great seamstress but have become brave in wielding a glue gun. Sometimes visibility and mobility are compromised, but the kids' joy and pride wearing the costumes outweigh a little discomfort. I found myself looking forward to this time more each year. As a stay-at-home mom, this became a fantastic creative outlet for me that I didn't realize I was missing. I would find myself roaming the aisles of Home Depot and the depths of my garage, trying to re-imagine the ordinary and what I could use to construct each costume. Some were pretty unexpected, like a lamp shade and pool noodle to make the Minion, a deflated basketball for the Alien and a dirt bike helmut to make a Wild Thing head. In the end, it's always a wonder to me that it comes CONTINUED > together in time.

As my kids turn into teenagers, I know their time participating in the family costume is limited. Fortunately, they have developed a "nothing is impossible" attitude, at least in regard to costumes. Already, they are talking about making their own costumes next year, maybe with their friends. My response to them is "You have learned well, young Padawan. Follow the force." This fall, if only for one night, you too can find your inner child, unleash your creativity, and make some lasting memories. To me, this is the real treat of Halloween. had Hickman grew up right here in the Heartland, in Olathe to be exact. As a kid, he dreamed of Royals baseball and one day hitting the ball over the wall in the bottom of the ninth to win the World Series. Baseball was one of his greatest passions. That is why he, like so many other kids growing up in America, and even around the world, found himself on summer days walking to the park with his buddies with his ball, his bat, and his glove, to not only play baseball, but to dream of baseball. Chad accepts the fact that he probably wont get called up to the big leagues in order to get his chance of hitting that game winning homer, but that hasn’t stopped him from keeping baseball at the heart of what he does. As the owner of Sandlot Goods, in the Crossroads District at 504 E. 18th St., you can see baseball’s influence in everything they make and sell. Once a photographer, Chad was a co-owner of a local studio that had renovated their building to sub-lease office space to other local artisans. Over time he knew his career was headed in a different direction and he had built such a great bond with those around him, they began to brainstorm on some new ideas. From those conversations their new business venture was born. Sandlot Goods has a passion for all things Americana, and that is seen in the unique, baseball style stitching in all of their leather goods. From handbags to wallets, journal covers to women’s purses, the unique stitching is seldom seen anywhere else and is a reminder of the nostalgia that is known as our country’s favorite pastime, baseball.

The leather used in all of their products comes from Horween Leather and is some of the finest in the world. Horween is based in Illinois and is the same company that provides the leather not only for many gloves used in Major League Baseball, but also for the balls used in the National Football League. What started out as just a hobby has now turned into something very exciting, with three full-time employees and opportunities to not only expand their product line but also their market. Meet the Makers: Ken & Cody L ynn DARK HOLLER DESIGN WORKS & PALADIN SHAVING BRUSHES

en Lynn of Overland Park, KS, and his son Cody, established Dark Holler Design Works and started making Paladin shaving brushes in August 2014. At the time, Ken, a 1981 graduate of KU Law School, was winding down a 30-year career in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, and Cody had just received a degree in Industrial Design from KU. By the end of 2014, PaladinÂ® shaving brushes were gaining recognition as being among the finest traditional shaving brushes made by anyone, anywhere.

Dark Holler Design Works and the Paladin Shaving venture evolved out of a community project on the Badger & Blade wet-shaving site. Ken had designed a brush handle (subsequently dubbed the Chief ™) and persuaded Lee Sabini, a famed and notoriously elusive London brush-maker, to produce 100 shaving brushes incorporating the design. Offered exclusively to members of Badger & Blade, those brushes sold out in one day. Energized by the experience and perceiving an opportunity, Ken and Cody set about assembling a small but remarkably capable home-shop built around 25-year-old, Austrian-made, precision-CNC lathes. After Ken posted photos of his first prototype handle (the PK-47™), Mr. Sabini called to ask if Ken thought he might be able to turn 100 handles and have them delivered to London in time for completion before the holiday season. That sufficed to bring Cody into the venture, and Dark Holler Design Works was formed. The first batch of 100 Paladin-labeled shaving brushes, priced at $160 each, was quickly over-subscribed. Subsequent reviews by enthusiasts around the world hailed Paladin shaving brushes as setting new standards, particularly in handle design, production, and finish-quality. In February of last year, Dark Holler was asked to design and make a limited edition of 100, numbered and custom-engraved Paladin shaving brushes to mark the third anniversary of The Shave Nook, another popular website dedicated to traditional wet-shaving. Those brushes, priced at $180, sold out within 97 seconds of their online release in early July 2015. Paladin Shaving began another hiatus from brush sales in late June in order to move and expand shop operations. ake Candles is a Kansas City operated, soy candle company that began in October 2015 by James and Lainey Lake. Lainey is born and raised in Leawood, KS and James is from Houston, TX however the couple met in Kansas City in 2010, got married in Kansas City in 2014, and currently reside in Fairway, KS (hence the name of their holiday candle ‘Fairway Fir’). Each soy blend candle is hand poured by James and Lainey, in the basement of their home. Lainey began making candles for their home some time ago because she was always interested in knowing how to make a candle. Lainey loves to always try new crafts or projects, and making candles was her favorite of all. Once she began making them and perfecting them, she got hooked and made too many for their home and started giving them as gifts. She had ‘sip and sniff’ parties for her friends to find out which scents were best. She began having people she didn't know reach out to her for candles and/or events. 40

Our favorite thing about the product is that each and every single candle is from start to finish, made by the both of us. It is a production that we enjoy doing together. James and Lainey had a good Kansas City friend help create their branding and packaging. The triangle in the LAKE represents fire in alchemy symbols. All of the boxes are made in Kansas City by a company called All Packaging Company. The boxes are made to represent a sun setting on a lake. The bottom half is the actual topography of a lake. The pink on the top of the boxes is made to represent the sun setting on the lake horizon. A HEALTHY TWIST ON A FAVORITE FALL SPICE RECIPE ZEAL

INGREDIENTS | 2 cups unsweetened organic almond milk 1 cup organic pumpkin puree 2 tbsp. almond butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 cup agave nectar (or maple syrup, honey or coconut sugar syrup) 2 tsp. pumpkin spice (or make your own with 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. ginger, pinch ground clove, pinch allspice) 1/2 cup chia seeds Optional Topping: pepitas, chopped walnuts or pecans, shredded coconut and drizzle of honey

EQUIPMENT | Glass bowl, stainless or suitable container for holding at least 4 cups Whisk

INSTRUCTIONS | 1. Pour one cup of the almond milk into your glass bowl and add pumpkin puree. Whisk until the puree is completely dissolved into the milk. 2. Add almond butter, vanilla, agave and pumpkin spice and whisk until incorporated. 3. Add remaining almond milk and begin adding in the chia seeds whisking to incorporate. 4. Let stand for five minutes, and then whisk for one to two minutes to incorporate the chia throughout. 5. Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, then remove and whisk again. 6. Chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the pudding to set. If the pudding isn’t thick enough simply add an extra tablespoon or two of chia seeds. October 2016 | Leawood Lifestyle

Some of these services include therapeutic massage, chiropractic treatment, healing acupuncture, dental attention and an overall holistic approach to care. Â The truly remarkable thing is that these features are just a few of the comforts provided at State Line Animal Hospital. Animals that are privy to this hospital can look forward to an environment that provides them with more of a relaxing, stress-relieving experience than a scary, paw-cringing visit that leaves them howling for release. Based on life events cultivated from her relationship with the late Dr. Cheri Jones, who was diabetic since a young age, and who worked at State Line for 20 years, Dr. Barchman has committed to alleviating the pain of diabetes and other debilitating diseases that plague the pets she sees. This drive has also lead to the non-profit organization, Cheri’s Hope, which is dedicated to finding the cure for diabetes in animals. Besides its unique, aggregate approach to animal care, State Line has provided the Standard of Veterinary Excellence (AAHA) for over forty years. Notice your increased strength each week. Be proud. Make time for 20+ minutes of cardio, 5+ times a week. Doing SOMETHING is always better than doing NOTHING. Just move!!… and when you are able, challenge yourself to do more. Check your resting heart rate today & check it again after 30 days of increased activity. According to the American Heart Association “Active people have lower heart rates, because the heart muscle is in better condition and doesn’t need to work as hard to maintain a steady beat.” The heart is a pretty important muscle to condition. Find a buddy to keep you motivated. Get excited about feeling good. You will not regret it.
