A Letter From the Editor

I have loved magazines for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up, I would collect all different kinds -  Vogue,  Interview,  Outdoor Magazine and W. I would get lost in the stories and the ideas. When I applied to Boston University, I hoped I would be led to a big city with a job at an actual magazine publishing company.

Instead, I followed my other passion - health and wellness - and opened my own business, a fitness facility and yoga studio. Now, 15 years later, as business continues to thrive, I am excited to follow my heart. As I sit, writing my first editor’s letter for City Lifestyle Magazine, I am overwhelmed by the memories of the journey to this place – Editor – and the emotions it evokes. The path here has been different than I imagined, but it is a path I would not change.

In this September issue, I hope to take you on a journey into the style of Lakewood Ranch and Sarasota. For our Hot Spot, we will revisit Libby’s, a local favorite, with their down to earth menu, cool vibe, and new Wine Club concept.

We will go discover the newly digital world of art and design with our Artist Spotlight, Dez + Cat, showcasing their incredible talent through interior design and online art curation.

Finally, we will explore the future of Siesta Key’s brand-new luxury residences, AZURE. These state-of-the-art architectural gems bring the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico into your home, with their stunning design concept and meticulous attention to detail.

I feel incredibly honored to have worked for some of the smartest and most boundary-pushing humans throughout my career, and this is no different. The media landscape is changing, and magazines, like the rest, are becoming increasingly digital. But in the end it all comes down to creativity. This story and - I hope - the entire issue capture that new spirit.Many thanks to the amazing and incredibly hardworking team at City Lifestyle for bringing these ideas to life. We hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we did making it.

As I round the corner, I see the familiar bustle of the Libby's outdoor patio. I recognize the faces of friends. I smell the smells from the kitchen.

Libby's is our darling. A staple in the local community. Nestled in the heart of Sarasota, the restaurant and bar has been a beloved dining destination since its inception as a family-run business in 2008. Taking over the reins of the classic Sarasota dining spot known as "Fred's," Libby's quickly Libby's captured the hearts of patrons with its popular ladies' nights, daily chef-crafted specials, and weekend brunch buffets that were second to none.

Over the last 10 years, as the Sarasota area flourished into a hidden gem with an abundance of under-the-radar dining spots, Libby's recognized the need to keep up with the rapid growth. In response, the restaurant closed its doors for a year and emerged as Libby's Neighborhood Brasserie—a modern and elevated iteration that still retained the essence of its traditional roots.

The transformation was spearheaded by co-owners Joe Seidensticker and Joe Guli, each bringing their unique inspirations to the table. Seidensticker, with a passion for beautiful architecture and interior design, envisioned a restaurant that would not only tantalize

the taste buds but also appeal to the eyes and senses of the guests. On the other hand, Guli, a classically trained chef with Italian and Spanish influences, obsessed over every detail on a plate, the quality of ingredients used, and the smiles on the faces of the guests as they savored each dish.

The grand reopening in 2018 marked a new chapter in Libby's journey. With its contemporary ambiance and culinary excellence, the restaurant became a fitting representation of the thriving Sarasota community. Building on this success, Seidensticker and Guli set their sights on the burgeoning Lakewood Ranch area, acquiring the smaller but equally iconic Libby's on Lorraine and University in late 2019. This expansion was a testament to their commitment to serving a broader clientele while preserving the charm and character that made Libby's special.

Whether you know him from the Netflix hit Restaurants on the Edge or from his absolutely mouth-watering food photos as @ dennistheprescott on the ‘gram, this former-musician turned internationally-renowned Chef is an amazingly talented, thoughtful, and globe-trotting force to be reckoned with. When it comes to inspiration for creating experiences around food and your community, as well as creating travel bucket lists to some of the world’s most unique and delicious destinations off the beaten path, Chef ‘Dennis The Prescott’ is a culinary change maker whose feed you’ll want to feast on

Originally an aspiring musician, Canadian-born Dennis Prescott’s journey began while in university with a single invitation from another solo musician who asked him to tour with them around the US. This eventually took him to Nashville where they began making records and pursuing their musical dreams.

Yet, in the midst of all of this, Dennis was not taking care of himself — eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life. A friend had a “come to Jesus” moment with him and stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself. Having no idea exactly what that meant or how to do so, the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.”

The Start

“Go to the library and borrow some cookbooks,” his friend suggested. Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time.

Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment.

“I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment.

What eventually followed were 13 episodes over nine months where the Restaurants on the Edge team traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland.

“Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.”

Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland.

“Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.”

Restaurants on the Edge is important and meaningful to Chef Prescott because it tells stories of hope and joy and redemption around the kitchen. Oftentimes the food space can be very stressful, but he believes that at the end of the day, people just want to spend time with other people that they love.

One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’

Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there.

“Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”

THE little BLACK DRESS

Most of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?

Prior to the 1920’s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straight-lined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.

We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says.

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.

If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”

Beginning at 8:15 a.m. with the flag raising at the campus entrance and followed by featured speaker, Peter Abbott, executive officer in the Office of the First Deputy Commissioner of the New York Police Department. It will culminate with performances by the Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School children’s choir, a moment of silence, a 21gun salute and a bugler playing "Taps."
