Reflections on Motherhood and Gratitude
I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. As a writer, mother, and interior decorator, I’ve been blessed by so many incredible women who have shaped and supported me along the way. Wives, mothers, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms. But it’s not just the biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives—making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
This year, Mother’s Day has taken on a whole new meaning for me as I became a mother for the first time. Welcoming my newborn baby has been the most life-changing, joyful, and humbling experience.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities from a GYN clinic to photography to hair salons. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role—connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to our area’s women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

After 56 years on this planet, I may not know everything. But I know how I want to spend my time.
For example, sewing. I can spend hours in a fabric store and entire weekends on sewing retreats. The time just flies by. I will also jump at the chance to put my kayak into the water or play tennis with my husband.
But asking me to spend three hours at the gym each week is like asking me to pull my own teeth. The workouts are bad enough. The sweating is worse. I know, because I spent much of my 30s and early 40s TRYING to make a gym membership work.
And I succeeded – at least for a week or so at a time. Then the drudgery set in. I secretly envied the people who could stick with the gym because by age 44, I knew it would never work for me. I was too good at making excuses.
Then I met Al Roach and Virginia Phillips, owners of 20 Minutes to Fitness in Sarasota, and my attitude toward fitness changed. As Al explained, this workout required a commitment of just 20 MINUTES A WEEK. That’s it! One trip, in and out. There’s not even enough time to build up a sweat.
Virginia also told me that the workout is medically based. By training in ultra-slow motion, it only takes about two minutes on each piece of specialized equipment to take every major muscle group to peak performance – building muscle more efficiently. Then I’d be free to get back to my sewing, or whatever else I wish!
Perhaps best of all, I am never left alone. A personal fitness coach would tailor the workout to my specific needs, while also making sure I used proper form and tracking my results. Because the workout is performed on equipment originally designed for physical therapy, it’s safe, too.
I had to give it a try.
That was 11 years ago. And except for an ill-advised two-year break, I’ve been training there ever since. I didn’t even let a breast cancer diagnosis in 2008 keep me from my 20 Minutes to Fitness.
In fact, maintaining most of my weekly work out sessions while juggling surgery, chemo and radiation was an important part of my recovery, helping to keep me strong and moving forward. The love and support I received from the 20 Minutes to Fitness staff was as helpful as the training itself.
I’m pleased to report that today, at 5’4” and 120 lbs., I’m feeling strong and healthy – and the muscle definition in my arms is better than ever. My husband calls me “Mrs. Solid,” which he says is a compliment, and I believe him.
Traditional gyms always set me up to fail. 20 Minutes to Fitness has set me up to succeed. That’s why I keep going. I want nothing more than to be the strongest 90-year-old woman in Sarasota. Of course, I wouldn’t mind some competition. So I encourage you to give it a try.

Dr. Eden Yelverton is passionate about women’s health care. She lives out that passion every day by helping women take great care of their bodies and educating them on how the female body functions, what to expect during different stages of life, and how to address problems when they arise.
After working for years in the traditional healthcare system, Dr. Eden felt led to open Her Health, a gynecologic clinic designed for women to receive personalized medical care without the time and insurance constraints that often accompany traditional care. “I felt led to open Her Health because I want to have more time with patients and to be able to discuss alternative treatments that there was not necessarily the time to talk about in an insurance or hospital-based system” shares Dr. Eden. “What led me here is freedom to have more time with my patients and to do more for them.”
At Her Health, patients experience personalized visits that give Dr. Eden the opportunity to get a holistic view of their health journey as well as develop a customized care plan. With that in mind, appointments usually last longer than traditional appointments and can take between half an hour to a full hour. The clinic offers a wide range of comprehensive health services for women including annual exams, cancer screenings, sexual health screenings, hormone management, vaginal health testing, and pelvic ultrasound.
“I also help women achieve pregnancy, if they need help, and see women up to 10 weeks of pregnancy,” she explains. “I can confirm a pregnancy, make sure it’s healthy, and then we will transfer them to an obstetrician who will do the delivery. I also offer ultrasounds for gynecology reasons or obstetrics reasons below 10 weeks.”
Patients also benefit from Dr. Eden’s experience with robotic surgeries for hysterectomies and myomectomies as well as in-office procedures such as hysteroscopy, which provides a detailed look at the uterus.

“Our whole focus is giving freedom to women from their pain and problems. So many women have pain and they have been to several different doctors, or they are struggling through perimenopause and have done every supplement out there,” she shares. “There are so many problems where women just get bounced around, and when they finally are with me, I may not have the answer right away, but I’m going to walk with them through it until I find an answer.”

“Hysteroscopy is a camera that passes through the cervix to look into the uterus,” she says. “It is the gynecologist version of a stethoscope and a way that I can look in the uterus and tell someone what is going on. Not everybody needs that, of course, but it’s something that is great and I can do in the office without having to go to the hospital.”

“We also use a platform called Reimbursify and we send women the link at the end of their visit. This makes it very easy for women to upload their insurance information and the superbill, then the platform will do the rest for them. It’s quite simple.”

The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation carries forward the legacy of a woman whose life was defined by kindness, empathy, and compassion. Through its support of organizations that embody the essence of Virginia Toulmin, the Foundation continues to honor her heartfelt commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Upon her passing, Virginia allocated $140 million to a private charitable remainder trust, ensuring the continuation of her philanthropic endeavors. The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation was formed to advance her legacy. The Foundation is overseen by three trustees: Bill Villafranco, Walter Montaigne, and Alexander Sanger. Among them, Mr. Villafranco developed a close relationship with Virginia during the last fifteen years of her life.
One of the key legacies of Virginia’s life that the Foundation upholds is its unwavering commitment to being hands-on and deeply involved with the causes it supports. “Virginia was deeply engaged in her philanthropy,” Bill explains. “She didn’t just sit on boards; she took the time to get to know executive directors and organizational leaders. That’s where the core of her approach to giving shines through in our work. We’ve embraced the model she left us, and we actively engage with the recipients of our grants. We make an effort to connect with the leadership of the organizations, meet the scholarship recipients, and even participate in camps. We are hands-on philanthropists, and that’s one of the most vital aspects of how Virginia approached her giving.”
At the inception of the Foundation, the trustees hired a reputable firm to spend two and a half years interviewing families, friends, and community members to gain a comprehensive understanding of the many causes Virginia supported throughout her life. Through this extensive research, the trustees
confirmed that she was deeply committed to empowering women and believed in creating opportunities for them to excel. She also recognized the vital role of the performing arts in life. Additionally, drawing from her background in nursing, Virginia was passionate about advancing the field of nursing, supporting medical research, and providing resources to combat mental illness and addiction.
“If you look through Virginia's lifetime, you will see that she cared deeply for people, and that is the single most important element in the Toulmin Foundation's work today. She had so much empathy and compassion,” says Bill. “She also created opportunities for women to thrive, and we want to stay true to that vision.”
The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation is committed to transforming lives through social change and fostering a vibrant performing arts culture. It supports organizations in the performing arts—especially orchestral music, opera, ballet, and theater—with a focus on increasing opportunities for women artists. The Foundation also funds initiatives in arts education, social and educational services for children and families facing health challenges, and healthcare programs that support women, girls, and nurses while advancing medical research.
On an international scale, the Foundation is transforming the lives of women through initiatives such as a nursing school in Bangkok, Thailand. Over the past twenty years, the Foundation has supported the school, helping 450 women graduate and step into lives filled with opportunities for professional growth and financial stability.
