If I could bundle all of the thoughts and feelings into one word that expresses how important women are to our communities, that word would be "LOVE." So in the month that is notoriously known as the love month, I wanted to offer a different perspective on that word. Love is so much more than what we say or a romantic feeling for another person. It's a verb that inspires you to think and act selflessly for one another. This month we feature two ladies at the lake who we love because they love. They love their work, their families, and their community and we at Lake Norman Lifestyle believe that this is something worth celebrating! And if you are a lover of luxury fashion, we hope you enjoy our fashion editorial shot by the talented Isil Dohnke. W
e all know the saying…”what’s old is new again.” Two Lake Norman area restaurants could not
reflect this better in their mission to source the freshest ingredients for their dishes. Stroll down Main Street in the quaint town of Davidson, and you will happen upon a beautiful brick building with windows galore and one incredible dining experience. Kindred, is a true mirror image of a husband and wife’s culinary experiences in both travel and in working in some of the finest restaurants in the country. Joe and Katy have a vast network of procurers who they rely on to source the building blocks for their preparations. Kindred’s menu changes almost daily and is a pure expression of the changing of the seasons. The focus is on small, shareable plates. As you enter, you are greeted with gorgeous brick and tile. Your eyes cannot help but focus ahead on the elaborate wine wall. We decided to make our way upstairs and found our table fit with perfect linen napkins in front of a big window overlooking Main Street. The natural light shining through was a sign of good things to come. We were presented with two incredible dishes. The Crispy Oysters were buttermilk fried and placed perfectly on top of a dill yogurt sauce. To finish, a Calabrian chili oil was drizzled ever so gently throughout the dill yogurt sauce for that added touch of heat. A unique wide-rimmed, deep bowl housed the Bucatini special. Fresh pasta, egg yolk, guanciale, and tender English peas made for one incredible dish. We loved everything about our experience at Kindred and look forward to our next visit. Only a few miles down the road from Kindred, in Moorseville, you will happen upon an exciting new development to the Lake Norman area, Langtree. In the heart of this community lies the second location for Block & Grinder. The atmosphere is one of comfort and relaxation from the white tiled wall to the vast amount of wood. Not only can you enjoy a true farm to table dining experience, but you can also purchase their locally sourced meats at their butcher counter, hence, their philosophy of “everything under one roof.” Block & Grinder chooses natural, organic meats with no GMO’s and no antibiotics. They meticulously focus on sourcing locally for fresh ingredients and hand-cut all of their meats. The menu is further enhanced by offering a unique variety of seasonal dishes. We began our meal with one of my favorites; a char-
cuterie of house cold smoked salmon and smoked duck ham accompanied by a tempting selection of Spanish cheeses…a goat cheese and Idiazzabal (a hard Spanish cheese). The in-house pickled vegetables sent this dish over the top. Ben Philpott, the executive chef, then presented a gorgeous 22 oz. Bone-In Ribeye cooked to perfection. A flavorful, herb butter was melting away on top of this juicy cut of meat and was further enhanced by a garnish of local micro arugula. CONTINUED >

A leggy glass of Cabernet rounded out this dish. Upon my return, I am excited to try the pork shank, locally sourced from Heritage Farms. The warm and inviting atmosphere coupled with the super-friendly staff and a phenomenal selection of meats has my mouth watering and anxious for my next drop in. Artist Regine Bechtler was born in Germany and began creating art by crochet hooking some eyeglasses at the age of 6. She has always had a flair for her own sense of style and personality. I do not have ONE favorite artist because so many are super talented! A few of my favorite contemporary artists are Christina Cordova and Thaddeus Erdal. In the modern genre of art, I admire the works of Lynn Chadwick and Salvatore Dali. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR PEACE JACKETS?
Six years ago I purchased my first army jacket. It was too large, so I altered it and added embroidery and patches. After 20 people had asked me to make a jacket for them, I began to make “Peace Jackets.” The name has a strong meaning. Wars are occurring all over this beautiful planet. The jackets are a reminder that we need to seek harmony among us all, "piece by peace.” WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
I watch movies with my family, visit my friends, read books, eat chocolate and drink tea. WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT?
I travel a lot, so I have several favorite spots. North of Italy between Laggo Maggiore and Lake Como are wonderful. The South of France, Stockholm, and Hamburg are on my list and Alaska is a dream!
