I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. Whether it's dining out with a loved one, or finally tackling that renovation project, keep in mind the local businesses that call Lake Murray home. Hopefully the pages of this issue remind you of the bustling businesses we have for our every need. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Loveland Coffee and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or some takeout from Bodhi Thai Dining or a pizza from Ferraro's and enjoy a movie night in. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. Sam Jackson: The SCGA Player of the Year is a points race each year based on performance in state and national amateur events. I am very fortunate to have my name associated with so many great past champions. It is very humbling and makes me want to continue to get better each and every year.

Sam Jackson: I grew up on a family farm in Pelion. My home course is Country Club of Lexington.

LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: SPEAKING OF LEXINGTON COUNTRY CLUB, WE HEAR THAT YOU ARE THE REIGNING CHAMPION! TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT. Sam Jackson: Country Club of Lexington is a great club that is super competitive. I am proud to have won the Club Championship in 2016 and 2021. We have a number of guys that have had a lot of success in South Carolina Golf Association (SCGA) events. They make it a ton of fun to go out and prepare for events.

LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHAT AN AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT! BESIDES COUNTRY CLUB OF LEXINGTON, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE COURSES TO PLAY? Sam Jackson: I have been fortunate enough to play Augusta National and Pebble Beach, so those are my favorite two courses I have played. My favorite course around home to play is Palmetto Golf Club. It is a special place and provides a great challenge for all levels of players. CONTINUED >

LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS, AND WHY? Sam Jackson: Other than the obvious (Tiger Woods, because of course, he is Tiger Woods), I really like Rory McIlroy. He is fun to watch and I love how honest he is in press conferences.

LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN TAKING UP GOLF? Sam Jackson: For anyone getting started in the game, I would say enjoy the practice and keep a good attitude. Golf can take you to some amazing places, and will allow you to meet some great people.

LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT PLAYING GOLF? Sam Jackson: I love my job with Pella Windows & Doors, and I play Pickleball usually once or twice a week with a group of friends.

LAKE MURRAY LIFESTYLE: WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR YOU IN GOLF? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? Sam Jackson: I am excited to play in some new events this upcoming year and get back out with the guys on the SCGA. I would love to qualify for another USGA and contend at the state amateur. If you find yourself interested in golf, we encourage you to take Sam’s advice and get out there and enjoy the game! The Lake Murray area has several beautiful and challenging courses including the Country Club of Lexington. “I have known Sam since he was a budding junior golfer and he has always shown a great deal of skill as he progressed in age. This accomplishment is epitome of his hard work and natural talents. It’s no secret that Columbia, SC is a city on the rise, and tourists from all over are traveling to see what the hype is all about. New restaurants and breweries, hotel properties and more are consistently popping up all over town, but that’s not all that entices visitors to book a trip to the Heart of SC. In addition to checking out what’s new and noteworthy, travelers are choosing Columbia to experience the city’s institutions – businesses that have stood the test of time and stolen the hearts (and loyalty) of locals and visitors alike. So let’s get back to our roots and celebrate these establishments that helped pave the way for the Columbia you see today.

LIZARD’S THICKET

Bob and Anna Williams renovated a five-bedroom home and converted it into the first-ever Lizard’s Thicket in 1977. Forty-five years later, this local country cookin’ chain is still family-owned and operated by the Williams family. Feeding 12,000 mouths a day (14,000 on Sundays!), Lizard’s Thicket still uses some of Anna Williams’ original recipes and what you get at one location, you’re guaranteed to get at another one across town.

WHO ARE THE AMICKS? High school sweethearts, faith-oriented parents, community-minded entrepreneurs, hardworking professionals, friendly, welcoming business owners. Craig Amick is the 9th generation of the Emig (later Amick) family who immigrated from Germany in 1752 receiving a land grant for property underneath what is now Lake Murray. Generations of Amick’s have been entrepreneurs and stewards of the land ever since. Meredith Stillwell Amick, is the daughter of a local pastor who served the Gilbert community. After meeting in grade school, the pair became high school sweethearts, moving on to Clemson University to receive engineering degrees before marrying back in their hometown and settling into their careers and starting a family.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A DISTILLERY HERE IN LAKE MURRAY COUNTRY? A good family friend was part of a large moonshining family in the Gilbert/Leesville area many years ago. When the opportunity to open micro-distilleries in SC

became available, we asked him to bring along decades of expertise and help us set up a legal distillery. When he agreed, we began purchasing property, building a facility and completing the required federal, state and county licensing processes. We have now been open almost 8 years right in the community that Craig’s family has been a part of for 10 generations and have expanded our product offering to include High Cotton Bourbon, William Alan Bourbon, 34.08 Whiskey, Low Water Vodka, and White Hot Cinnamon Whiskey, in addition to Hollow Creek Moonshine.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT FOR YOU ABOUT RUNNING HOLLOW CREEK? The past year has provided some great opportunities. As we got further into and better recognized at industry events, we had several industry insiders encouraging us to enter our products in the major spirits competitions. We took a leap of faith. We were thrilled when we got the email from the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition sharing our win- a total of 6 medals! Two gold, two silver and two gold packaging awards. We barely finished toasting our win, when the second round of medals was announced from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. About a month after that, word came from the New York International Spirits Competition, that our William Alan scored 96 points to earn DOUBLE GOLD (meaning a unanimous decision for the judges) and they were recognizing us as SC Distillery of the Year.

IS THERE ANYTHING EXCITING YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BUSINESS? One exciting development to keep an eye out for will be our Barrel Adoption Program. Also, over the next year or two we’re going to be expanding our wholesale distribution significantly after signing an agreement with a new distribution partner. Of course, everyone loves a special release from time to time. This year, we’ve had two. The first was a barrel of High Cotton that was finished in a cabernet sauvignon barrel for six months. This was followed by our first release of a barrel strength, single barrel of William Alan. Finally, we’ve even been dipping our

toes in the event space and have hosted a couple of comedy shows, brought out some musicians and food trucks, hosted community events involving local artisans and crafters, as well as hosting regular blood drives and even a wedding rehearsal! A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

USE R EAL ESTATE WISELY

ORGA NIZE BY KIND A ND COLOR

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, longsleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
