My Neuropathy Success Story!
What our patients have to say:
Hi. My name is Steven. I’ve been coming to Carolina West Clinic in Lexington for the neuropathy in my feet. I’ve been on the treatment plan for a little less than a month and I am having outstanding results. I already feel that I have a thirty to forty percent improvement from when I first came in. I highly recommend Dr Bigbie and the whole team here. They have an awesome staff and really care about your well-being.
“I never thought I would be able to sleep at night or feel as rested as I do. If you have neuropathy you should give it a try. It can really work a miracle for you. I was desperate for some pain relief. My feet bothered me too bad and I am not a diabetic ... I don’t have to take pain medication. This is the best treatment I could expect.” - Grace B.

LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy Father’s Day! Finally! I’m happy to be the focus of the attention in this month's Lake Murray Lifestyle. Fatherhood is a role I don’t take lightly. And one that I really enjoy! Zachary, Alexandra, and Victoria are all grown, but my fatherly advice never ceases. In fact, a whole new round of advice is ready for my son Zachary and my son-in-law Brian as they now begin their own fatherhood journeys. On our cover, you can see that Zachary is now father to Thomas Henry and Brian is now father to Callahan Ann. These grandchildren of mine were born just 11 days apart and will certainly keep me and their fathers on our toes. Life is so good! All of the articles in this month’s issue of Lake Murray Lifestyle resonate with me personally. Whether it’s men’s health, leaving a legacy, making a difference in the lives of young people, or having a blast on the race track, I really appreciate how men of the Midlands are living their lives with intention. The calendar lists some of my favorite summer activities. And there's lots of information and inspirational photos to get you ready for the Fourth of July weekend. The fireworks celebration hosted by Capital City/ Lake Murray Country is one of my absolute favorites. As always, don’t forget to follow us on CityLifestyle.com, “Your Destination for Local Living” as well as on Instagram @lakemurraylifestyle.

Lake Murray’s
4th of July
Celebration
will light up the sky on July 2nd 16
LOCA LS ON LY | ENTERTAI NME NT
Time to get in the patriotic spirit and celebrate America’s birthday on Lake Murray! Now in its 34th year, the Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board is proud to host the annual 4th of July Celebration on Lake Murray on Saturday, July 2nd, presented by Lexington Medical Center. At noon, the annual boat parade will take place and this year’s theme is “Honoring our Heroes.” Enjoy the patriotic display as locals and visitors decorate their boats in ways that will leave you amazed. The annual boat parade is viewable from the park sites at the Lake Murray Dam or by boat. It is FREE to be a part of the fun and there are cash prizes! Register online at LakeMurrayCountry.com, at the Lake Murray Country Visitor Center (2184 N. Lake Drive, Columbia) or by phone at 803-781-5940. “We are grateful to honor our heroes at this year’s boat parade. A hero is someone that impacts our lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place…military, police, first responders, nurses and teachers,” said Vickie Davis, Vice President of Special Events and Funding at Capital City/Lake Murray Country. South Carolina’s largest fireworks show will take place at approximately 9:15pm from two lake locations, Spence Island and Dreher Island. The show is choreographed to a patriotic concert that will air simultaneously on the Cumulus Media (B106.7 WTCB). Both park sites at the Lake Murray Dam will be open until they reach capacity. Dreher Island State Park is 30 miles from Columbia and 12 miles off I-26 (via Chapin exit #91). Follow the visible brown State Park signage for easy navigation. The fireworks are funded through Capital City/Lake Murray Country’s fundraising efforts at the Taste of Lake Murray each year and from the following sponsors: Lexington Medical Center, Nephron Pharmaceuticals, Dominion Energy, First Community Bank, Palm Beach Tan, Stewart Landing on Lake Murray and Tidewater Boats.

24 Hours of Lemons? What’s that? It’s a racing circuit for amateurs running junk cars. The Lemons Organization (24hoursoflemons.com) is focused on two things – safety and fun. Safety is paramount. Every car is checked by the Lemons Safety team. If you don’t pass safety, you don’t run the race. Fun comes from your ability to make a junk car run! Each team is allowed to spend $500 on car improvements in order to keep the competition fair. If the Tech Team thinks you’ve spent more than $500, you’re penalized one lap for each $10 over. Some cars have been penalized 200 or 300 laps, and this have no chance to win. Driving lemons keeps it as safe and fair as possible. Oh, one thing: It’s not 24 hours and it’s not in a row. 16 hours total, 8 hours each day. It’s cheap racing, but racing isn’t cheap.
DOWNTOWN CAMDEN The town of Camden hosts a parade on Friday evening. All the participating cars parade down Main Street and park so people can view the cars and talk to drivers. It is a great tradition that gets the entire community involved. During this time, the Lemons Team does the “BS Tech”. This determines what class each car will be in, A, B or C. Constant “negotiation” takes place, with baked goods, Lemons Charity donations, alcohol and, of course, cash influencing final placement. Our team managed to secure a spot in Class B for the race.
1993 LEXUS SC400 ON THE STARTING GRID Our team, “Lex Machine,” ran with a 1993 Lexus SC400. We got to Carolina Motorsports Park on Friday to practice. It was important to get track time. But we had brake trouble and only two of our four drivers got track time. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any. Saturday was race day. It’s first come, first served on the starting grid. We lined up about 20th out of 84 cars. The pace car started the race. After one lap of warm-up, the green flag came out for racing. Our top driver, Eldon, got us out to a great start. We were running third overall and first in our class when the car started having problems. Eldon’s braking skills and ability in the corners kept us in the race but we dropped to twentieth overall and third in our class as we approached the driver change. Ed, our team captain, struggled due to lack of practice time. If a driver goes off track, the car is “black flagged.” The driver must come off the course and report to the officials. The first infraction gets you “spoken to.” Ed quickly returned to the course, but after a few more laps he was black flagged again. This time, the punishment is being “hollered at.” Remember, safety is everyone’s top priority, and we had to respect that. It takes longer to holler so we were losing laps! This competition is about endurance, not speed, so more track time leads to more laps. We finally get Ed back on the track, but he is penalized again within a few laps. CONTINUED >

With this, we are directed to the “penalty box”. Our penalty? We had to get our fingernails painted by a smiling four year old named Margaret, a cute little red-headed sweetheart. She and her mom had a great time embarrassing us. All tongue-in-cheek but certainly sending the message for us to run safer. I had silver fingernails and I hadn’t even been in the car. And in the back of our minds, we know we are dropping spots every minute. Ed got back out and ran until the next driver-change without incident. Now it’s my turn. I have not even seen this track before. I strapped in and was off and running. My pulse is up over 150 BPM; I’m forcing myself to breathe deeply and slowly, trying to keep the adrenaline from freaking me out. It wasn’t easy. On my first lap, I took it slow and easy and I was learning the line and trying not to hit anyone or go off course. It’s difficult to explain if you haven’t been out there. It’s like a three ring circus at 100 MPH. Straightaways are fast then braking slows to as low as 30 MPH for turns. All this as you navigate around over 80 other
22

cars. In my sixth lap I spun out and went off track, resulting in our fourth black flag. Technically, this penalty was to end our night of racing, but the judges listened to my sob story and took into account our good nature at the fingernail painting. Instead, we accepted being sidelined for thirty minutes. The loss of laps dropped us out of the running for Day 1. And we quickly grew concerned about the health of our car. Overnight we made adjustments, switching out the fuel pump and throttle position sensor, replacing a tie rod end and biasing the brakes. As we entered Day 2 of racing, the car ran great. Eldon took us out fast and we were running well. After 20 laps the engine started acting up again. We babied it through the rest of the day. In the end the car with the most laps in each class wins. We weren’t even close. We placed 37th out of 57 cars that finished, and 14th out of the 18 cars in Class B. We were disappointed, but that is driving our determination for next year. It was truly a blast!

LEAVING A LEGACY Cam Moss is a people person. Within the first few minutes of talking with him, you realize that he is a man who cultivates relationships. He’s attentive to who you are, how you got here, and what drives you to move forward. And he’s interested in what he can do to help. In actuality, Cam’s not building a legacy as much as he is adding to his family’s legacy; one built on helping people. Much of Cam’s inspiration to become engaged with others stems from his grandfather, the Honorable Benny R. Greer. As a family court judge in Darlington, Judge Greer focused his life on serving others. He devoted his time and his resources to those less fortunate. He dedicated much of his professional life to establishing standards for how others should be treated, including fighting for integrated public schools. Another big influence on the Moss family legacy has been the grandfather of Cam’s wife - Dr. Anthony C. Gholz. Here is yet another man focused on caring for the community around him. Like Judge Greer, Dr. Gholz was known for his generosity as well as his humbleness. So how does a man focused on qualities like integrity, work ethic, and generosity create a livelihood in today’s world? Cam has done so by creating Legacy 6 Recruiting. Ultimately, the perfect way for him to focus on people is by helping small to medium-sized businesses hire ideal candidates. Too often, current and popular recruiting methods fail to prioritize these organizations, resulting in hires that are less than ideal. He’s been involved in
recruiting before, but Legacy 6 allows Cam to prioritize people on both sides of the process. His innovative approach is revolutionizing the recruiting industry. Of course, Cam’s process begins by engaging people. He takes his time getting to know his clients well, including their vision, mission, core values, unique culture and what makes them stand out in their industry. The evaluation process includes determining specific hiring needs and establishing optimal methods for the search. Ultimately, the goal is to find a candidate that fits the organization’s culture, including a strong connection to the organization’s vision, mission and core values. Lots of people may be able to do the prescribed job. Legacy 6 is looking for the candidate that provides the ideal fit within the company’s cultural dynamics. Recruiting is an in-depth process. The comprehensive services offered by Legacy 6 include: • Innovative strategies used to pursue and attract top talent • Thorough review of candidate resumes • First and second-round interviews • Review of onboarding policy and documents compliance • Creation and/or review of offer letter using industry best practice • Assistance with creating a comprehensive Job description • Website review for optimal candidate attraction • Benefit review for optimal candidate attraction CONTINUED >

HOW WILL DIVORCE IMPACT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?
WITH ROUTINE DRYER EXHAUST MAINTENANCE.
The Financial Knot offers divorcing clients an understanding of how the decisions they make in their divorce will affect their future. It is not the role of a client’s attorney or CPA to tell them how their marital settlement will possibly disrupt their financial future. We can work directly with a client’s attorney. Complex financials require professional financial advice!
FIRES, HIGHER ENERGY BILLS & A SHORT DRYER LIFE
Clogged dryer vents reduce airflow causing longer dry times, higher energy bills and more wear and tear on your dryer. They can also cause a fire. Every year, nearly 16,000 preventable dryer fires are reported, resulting in millions of dollars in property damage, thousands of injuries and even death. C-DET Certified by the CSIA. MEN: IT’S TIME TO TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH!
Generally speaking, men are less likely than women to schedule routine screenings with their healthcare providers. However, with the prevalence of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers on the rise, now is not the time to sideline health. In addition to regular well checks, lifestyle is a huge determinant of well-being.
SMALL ADJUSTMENTS IN DIET AND EXERCISE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE. 30
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
It has long been established that a nutritious diet may aid in preventing several chronic conditions. Remarkably, a healthy eating pattern may even reverse certain types of heart disease, the leading cause of death for men in the United States. A healthy eating pattern places emphasis on lean meats and seafood, low fat or fat free dairy, and fiber-containing vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. We are just beginning to understand the numerous benefits of fiber. Along with improving bowel regularity, a high-fiber diet protects the gut, lowers cholesterol levels, helps control blood sugar and promotes longevity. It is recommended that men aged 50 or younger consume 38g of fiber daily, and men aged 51 or older consume 30g of fiber daily. Despite the advantageous effects, it is estimated that the majority of Americans do not receive adequate fiber from their diets. To incorporate more fiber, make the switch to whole grains, include a variety of legumes, eat an array of fruits and vegetables, and snack on nuts and seeds. While focusing on increasing fiber intake, be mindful of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar. Ways to reduce these three include cooking meals at home, using herbs and spices to season foods, limiting red and processed meats, and avoiding sugary beverages. Furthermore, the American Heart Association recommends alcohol in moderation, no more than two drinks each day for men. For reference, one drink is 12 oz of beer, 4 oz of wine, 1.5 oz of 80-proof spirits or 1 oz of 100-proof spirits. CONTINUED >

Moreover, middle-aged adults and older adults who engage in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefit. The current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity each week, with two days of full-body strength training. Other health-promoting behaviors include smoking cessation, stress management and quality sleep. It’s never too late to take control of your health. You can always improve upon your well-being. Instituting a lifestyle change may reduce your risk for age-related decline and chronic disease. Start today and experience instantaneous effects like improved mood, focus and energy. If you find that you need assistance or further guidance, seek the help of a qualified healthcare professional. For more information go to www.susansullivannutrition.com

Game Changers On a mission to change lives, one child at a time. ARTICLE BY SHANNON BARGHOLS
Steve Ware is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children. That work starts at home with his own five kids. Steve is intentional about being a father and makes sure that his professional duties don’t get in the way of that. He’s owned and operated several successful businesses in The Midlands, which has afforded him the flexibility to be the father he wants to be. However, he is quick to recognize that not every child has parents with that advantage or desire. He, himself, grew up without a fatherly influence and knows the struggles that stem from that particular circumstance.
36
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
Using his resources and his time, Steve formed the nonprofit Game Changers with the intention of helping children, especially those who are underprivileged and underserved. Through a focus on Mind, Body & Soul, the Game Changers organization is impacting hundreds of children each year. The mission is simple: To change lives, no matter one’s financial or social status, through inspiring hope and reflecting the love of God. Said another way. Game Changers’ vision is for every child, regardless of their present circumstance, to achieve a sense of well-being - physically, emotionally, academically, and spiritually.

The work of Game Changers takes place through mentoring programs in schools throughout the Midlands, after-school care, and seasonal programs such as a Back-to-School Bash and a Christmas Party. A large focus of the organization comes in the form of summer camps in two locations. Game Changers’ original location was procured by Steve years ago. Using his real estate connections, Steve acquired the former Gardendale Tennis & Swim Club and converted it into River’s Edge Retreat. More recently, Game Changers has purchased the old Skate Station USA and converted it into yet another facility for childhood fun. Both locations host a variety of summer camps where kids can enjoy traditional activities such as interactive games, outdoor recreation, treasure hunts, storytelling, music, arts & crafts, swimming, skating, field trips and so much more! Designed for all children regardless of socioeconomic status, camps include breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Life skills, character development, and Bible verses are also crucial parts of the programming. Summer programming caters to children ages 5 to 14, with 15 and 16-year-olds being allowed to serve as Counselors-inTraining. Registration is currently open for 2022 Summer Programming, including: • 10 Weeks of Summer Camp • Baseball Camp • Basketball Camp • Soccer Camp • Cheerleading Camp The success of Game Changers depends on the commitment of Steve and so many others. Hundreds of people give their time and thousands of people give their resources. Volunteer opportunities include serving in one of these key areas:
