Country Club of Lexington We lc ome s You Home Part 1 of a 2 part series on CCL. Part 2 we showcase the Professional Staff.

Since it’s opening in 1965, CCL has made creating a strong sense of community in a relaxed environment its mission. With a newly renovated clubhouse, golf, tennis, swim, and dining options, CCL has so much to offer to every family in the Midlands.

GOLF Play began 1966 under Pro Emeritus Norman Flynn, who served the club for 35 years. Under Flynn’s leadership and with the influence of partners such as Charlie Rountree, Jr., CCL has flourished. Rountree is credited as the father of junior golf in SC. Under his leadership, CCL has played a crucial role in developing what is now one of the strongest junior golf programs in the country.

CCL has recently been awarded “Club of the Year” by the South Carolina Golf Association. The club has hosted several SCGA and USGA events, and is consistently ranked among the top courses in the Midlands. CCL also offers a full service driving range, including a short game practice facility, as well as two practice putting greens. Chris Devane is the course superintendent. In addition to keeping the facilities in great shape, Devane and his staff are overseeing two major projects: (1) removal of a number of shade trees from around the course to allow for better sunlight, and (2) a complete repaving of the cart paths in order to facilitate a smoother ride.

SWIM & TENNIS The swim and tennis facilities of CCL are notable amenities for CCL. The Olympic size pool has undergone several renovations and upgrades in recent years. The facility is in high demand. The weekly schedule includes a variety of team activities and exercise programs.

Lane Hinson is the Director of Tennis. Making excellent use of both the hard and clay courts, Hinson can be found running instructional programs and clinics for all age groups. He has been recognized as the SC Tennis Coach of the Year as well as the SE Coach of the Year. He also proudly serves on the Lexington Area Tennis Association Board.

DINING Chef John Larson and Stephanie Mathias are in charge of CCL’s entire food and beverage operation. For members, this includes everything from the daily grill options to specialty dinners and club events.

CCL has become a popular place for weddings and banquets. The 3700 square foot banquet room can be used in its entirety or divided into three separate rooms. For groups of twenty to four hundred, CCL offers a beautiful venue for special events. The dining rooms and extensive patio decks overlook the picturesque golf course greens and fairways. The cuisine can be tailored to your requests, and served as a traditional plated dinner, a more casual buffet, or a cocktail reception. The focus is always on fine food and service.

Becca Bowen Celebrates Coming Home

Coming home always feels good - especially when it means coming home to the Midlands. Just ask up-and-coming country music star Becca Bowen. Becca has built a life in Nashville, but her South Carolina roots are deep and strong.

On a recent trip home, Becca took time to share what keeps bringing her back. “There’s something comfortable about coming back to my roots,” she says. And she means that literally and figuratively. Literally, coming home means family. Becca enjoys a close bond with her brother. When she’s in town, you can find the two outdoors. The peace she finds on the lake or in the woods is something she’s been unable to replicate anywhere else. She’s happiest when she and her brother are fishing for catfish, brim, or bass, or when they are hunting whitetail deer.

I remember an old gospel song I sang with The Crusaders, “I am a promise / I am a possibility / I am a promise with a capital "P" / I am a great big bundle of potentiality,” and I know I’ve found my purpose in life and that is sharing my music with others.

She says that her love of the outdoors started early. Her maternal grandfather was a farmer in Leesville. Becca fondly remembers fishing in the pond near his property. Long days running around outdoors were filled with fresh air and sunshine. And good food. She remembers her grandfather making chicken and rice with a side of collard greens. She can still picture him strumming a guitar in the kitchen.

Music is one of her earliest memories.

Many of you may remember a young Becca Bowen. She started singing in church at the age of five. She joined The Crusaders - a gospel group - and began touring. She participated in a variety of local pageants. She used her talents to travel throughout Richland and Lexington counties with The Cultural Council, helping this not-for-profit organization raise money for a variety of arts initiatives. Somewhere along the way, there was an appearance on Star Search and then a leap from gospel to Broadway.

Eventually, country music came calling and Becca couldn’t resist.

Nashville is where she now makes her second home. She has her own band, writes and records music, and performs frequently at places like The Local and The Listening Room. But South Carolina represents another side of home. She has her own band here - Noel Linder & the Bankwalkers - and she often performs with them at The Skyline Club. She always finds the love and support of her community. A little-known fact is that Becca is a certified personal trainer.

She’s helped many ladies right in her in the Midlands with their fitness routines, and still works with them when she’s in town.

As one of Pop Wrapped’s Country Artists to Watch in 2022, the year is off to a strong start for Becca. “Glitter,” a recently released single, was a chance to record the music of Rebecca Lynn Howard - an idol and mentor. Bowen was thrilled to have Howard sing back-up vocals for the single.

Coming later this year is another single that Becca says is truly a return to her roots, with a classic sound that reminds her of those early days in her grandfather’s kitchen. We’re excited to see what’s next!

What’s the Taste of Lake Murray all about? Presented by Lexington Medical Center, Taste of Lake Murray is an annual community event. Monies raised at the event support the annual July 4th fireworks celebration on Lake Murray, scheduled for Saturday, July 2, 2022. Many families look forward to Lake Murray’s annual July 4th celebration and without the money raised at this event, the fireworks wouldn’t take place.

People are often surprised when I tell them that their will is a ticket to court.

The common misconception is that a will is all you need. If you own, say a: house, car, bank account, some jewelry, and guns, and you are planning for your will to control their disposition, you may be unintentionally creating more work, more expense, and more drama for your loved ones.

Assets that aren’t owned jointly with another person and don’t have a beneficiary designation become probate assets when the owner dies. In South Carolina, when someone passes away, if they don’t have a will, their probate assets go through the court process (which normally takes about a year) and are distributed to their heirs. Your heirs are who the state of South Carolina says they are. Right now, and very simplistically, the law says it’s your spouse and kids. If none, then your parents.

So why does this matter? If you don’t want the state to decide by default who is in charge and who gets your stuff, then a will gives you some ability to state your wishes. The problem is there are a plethora of ways in which your intentions can be thwarted. Even a quick reading of the general provision that probate assets pass according to a person’s will should be enough to make anyone skeptical. The person named as the Executor, now called

a Personal Representative, must be appointed by the court, qualify, and be issued letters. Potential creditors of the decedent are given ample opportunity to present claims against the estate. Heirs who are supposed to receive nothing are nonetheless given notice of the will and an opportunity to get involved.

This is why a “will” isn’t good enough.

Contrast jumping through all the probate hoops with quick, efficient, and thoughtful administration under a trust. Assets that are properly titled in a trust prior to a person’s passing will COMPLETELY AVOID PROBATE. Trusts can have creditor protection. Trusts can protect assets for people with special needs. Trusts can hold and use assets for minors. Trusts can be used to avoid probate in multiple counties or states. Trusts can significantly shorten the administration timeline. And the list goes on and on.

So what’s the catch? A well-crafted estate plan centers around the “plan”.

Trusts are just a tool to make things easier and more efficient, but the pieces of legal paper mean very little if there isn’t a comprehensive plan making it all work.

Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
