Happy New Year!

January 2022 PUBLISHER

David Hayth | david.hayth@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Shannon Barghols | shannon.barghols@citylifestyle.com

It’s a new year and, for me, that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. Life is busy. I’ve been thankful for a short reprieve to be still for a moment. It’s provided a great opportunity to reflect on where we have been and contemplate where we want to go from here. The practice of establishing new goals for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority - or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our community. Whatever your goals may be for 2022, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step! Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

HEAD TO NEWBERRY FOR A NEW YEAR ADVENTURE Named one of the “Most Charming Small Towns in America” by the Travel Channel (2021), Newberry is known for its downtown district where the streets are lined with picturesque shops and restaurants and nearly every building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Start your Newberry day trip with a cup of coffee from Half Full Coffee and Wine located on Main Street in Newberry. Then, head to Carter & Holmes Orchid Nursery, a quick drive from Main Street. The nursery began in the late 1940’s and today ships orchids to hobbyists and commercial growers throughout the United States and to many countries around the world. Carter & Holmes features 18 greenhouses and is known for unusual and heirloom companion plants propagated by a talented crew. The talented crew will give you a nursery tour and help you shop for the perfect orchid. Stop in the Newberry Opera House for a sneak peek or to book a seat for an upcoming show. The Newberry Opera House has been the heart of Newberry County since the late 1800’s. It has become known as the entertainment center of the Midlands and has hosted thousands of performances from Grammy winners to internationally renowned performers to regional and local acts. The grand French Gothic Newberry Opera House, ca. 1882, fully restored and

technologically advanced, hosts everything from the Glenn Miller Orchestra to contemporary jazz and country, from plays to comedy, Broadway to opera. Hungry for lunch? Enjoy a delicious meal at Figaro the Dining Room, just steps from the Opera House. Figaro’s describes their food as fine dining with an eclectic southern twist. Menu highlights include the bacon-wrapped scallops and crispy fried green tomatoes. And, ask the waiter to tell you the story behind the wine vault! Spend the afternoon shopping and antiquing on Main Street or head to Enoree River Winery to wind down with a wine slushy. This intimate winery serves local, hand-crafted wines and guests can relax outdoors on the covered porch overlooking the vineyard. And, while you’re there, take home a few bottles to enjoy another day and to remember your stay. For those that would like to stay the night, consider the Newberry Manor B&B. You’ll love the staff’s Southern hospitality, the rocking chairs on the porch, its early 1900s décor, claw foot tubs and, of course, the gourmet breakfast. For more itineraries, visit LakeMurrayCountry. com. Some of the itineraries include Recreation and Relaxation in West Columbia and Cayce, Golf and Good Times in Blythewood, Saluda’s Scenic Backroads, Lexington is Lovely and Head Into Irmo.

Dancing, Fitn ess and Health with Miranda Derrick

ARTICLE BY SHANNON BARGHOLS

18

H OW TO | HEA LTH + WEL LNE S S

Sometimes doing what you love just naturally equates to health and wellness. Such is the case for Miranda Derrick, a social media personality and influencer. As a dancer and choreographer, her popularity has skyrocketed since appearing on the twelfth season of So You Think You Can Dance. Her platforms exude health and wellness, and her followers are anxious to know more about her lifestyle. Miranda hails from Detroit, Michigan, where she started dancing at the age of two. Dance competitions soon followed, and she was hooked. In her late teens, she traveled the country teaching through a popular dance convention. At the age of 18, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dancing career fulltime. Her initial jobs included teaching at the renowned International Dance Academy (IDA) Hollywood and back-up dancing for celebrities such as Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, Jennifer Lopez, and Katy Perry. Now Miranda spends about six hours of each day dancing. Her days are filled with choreographing routines and creating unique content for her social media channels. Often, she is also collaborating with other dancers on upcoming projects. It’s important that some of her work is done independently so that she can showcase her specific style and capabilities. But working with other dancers encourages Miranda to step out of her comfort zone to experiment with new styles and techniques. No matter what, energy is the key. Miranda is always looking for the locations and people that inspire her to live her best life. Find Miranda on Instagram and TikTok @itsmirandaderrick.

Your New Smile Awaits... Call Today.

MIRANDA’S KEYS TO WELLNESS: • Pescatarian diet. Miranda’s food intake focuses on fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, eggs, and dairy. She refrains from eating from meat and poultry, but she does consume fish and other seafood. She’s been a pescatarian for about five years, and she loves the way it makes her feel. Plus, she needs healthy food to fuel her grueling dance schedule.

MIRANDA DERRICK

• Intermittent fasting. Miranda occasionally adopts an intermittent fasting which is an eating plan, that switches between fasting and eating on a regular schedule. While many diets focus on what to eat, intermittent fasting is all about when you eat. Miranda has found that fasting for a certain number of hours each day can help her body burn fat. • Weight-training. The cardiovascular benefits of dancing six hours a day cannot be denied. However, weight training helps Miranda develop strength. In turn, this allows for more powerful movements and helps her reduce overall body fatigue. • Hiking. Fresh air and the LA sunshine are constantly calling Miranda’s name. She loves to hike the surrounding hills on a regular basis.

20

• Water consumption. Miranda is well aware of the benefits of water to her body. She makes sure to stay well hydrated, especially during long rehearsals. • Moderation. Cheat days are important and find themselves inserted into Miranda’s schedule every once in a while. That includes treats in moderation. • Mental Focus. Miranda believes that she can’t make healthy choices unless she first sets her mind to it. “I remind myself every day what my goals are but at the same time, I do not over obsess about food or working out,” says Miranda. “Just do your best and remember that little adjustments go a long way.”

New Year Resolutions ARTICLE BY HANNAH GILLS

What I know from a decade in the fitness industry

24

F E AT U R E | ED U CATION

Hannah Gills

What I now know about fitness is that while eating your protein and doing your squats are essential, NOTHING is as important as your mindset. As in, if you worked out 6 days a week and crushed it in the kitchen but didn’t work on your mindset, none of it would matter. Allow me to explain. Yes, nutrition and activity are essential to seeing physical changes in your body. However, if your mindset is not in the right place, it will be very hard to sustain the changes you’ve made. It will also be impossible to know when you’ve “made it”, or when you’ve succeeded in achieving your goals. A goal weight is fine, or even more specific a body fat percentage, but what then? In getting to your dream body or hitting your goal weight, the value is all in the journey. It’s worth it to build the habits and develop the behaviors that actually reflect a healthy life, rather than look for the newest shortcut. You simply cannot hack your way to lasting results. I know that lack of confidence and a stressful daily schedule can be the perfect storm that prevents you from taking that first step toward your goals. Here’s what I really want you to know about your fitness, from someone who’s “been into fitness” for a long time: If you think your body needs to look a certain way or you need to feel ready to commit to 6 months before you feel confident enough to step foot in that gym or think it’s worth it to buy that spinach for a green smoothie… You’ve got it wrong. You have to become the person who is confident enough to go into that gym and be a beginner in order to build the confidence you crave.

Action breeds confidence. The first time you do that workout will be hard. It might even suck for quite a few weeks. But you’ll be laying bricks in your confidence foundation, and it will be rock solid once you’ve got enough of them down. Changing your body takes guts, courage and so much consistency you won’t believe the change is happening, for a while. This is because your body and what people see externally are a ref lection of many, many small choices you’ve made along the way. It’s necessar y to put what you want long term BEFORE what you want in the moment. Once you start to see results - it will become addicting. The feeling of knowing that all the reps behind you are the reason you can do the reps today is powerful. And then one day you’ll look in the mirror and realize you’re here. Here in that place that you only imagined you could someday be. Just remember that the confidence started long before you had the body you thought you needed. It started with that first meal you cooked at home. That first rep you did at the gym. That first alarm you set to get up and take a walk. Don’t give up. Keep going. One rep at a time.

REDEFINING BEAUTY WITH STORIES OF GRIT & GRACE

What does it mean to be beautiful? Society today seems to define beauty as youthfulness. However, as photographer Jen Roberson began to contemplate the women in her own life, she concluded that the most beautiful women are older. And instead of youthfulness, she sees a depth, wisdom, and grit that forms a beauty all its own. Inspired by her mother’s sacrifice, service, and dedication to growth, Jen created a project to celebrate women of the Midlands who just happen to be over the age of 50. Through this project, she shares their stories and highlights their true beauty. This month, we introduce you to four of these beautiful women.

Fabulous Over 50

Linda

Age 53

Linda is the owner of Refine Medical Spa in Columbia. She says, “I have learned that when I love God, love my family, and move in kindness towards others, everything else falls into place. It doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It just means that I am positioned to bless and be blessed. That’s where I want to stay – in an atmosphere of blessings. I love the confidence and the clarity of my 50’s. I fully accept me, and I look for the good in those around me. And this gives me such a desire to be the best version of myself.” JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/L A KE M UR R AY

Jeanne

Age 65

Jeanne is an entrepreneur who loves helping people feel good about their skin. She approaches her life with gratitude and grace despite it being filled with much loss (younger sister, mother, great grandmother, father, and two husbands). Despite losing so many important people in her life, she stills says, “Strength, love and happiness prevailed all around.” And the accent is on happiness! She knows she is here for a bigger purpose – one she has yet to discover. She finds that life is beautiful!

Martie Age 59

Martie is a retired director of nursing. Within her life story, she notes, “I have learned that you must keep a healthy body, work hard, and love even harder. Don’t wait to do, or enjoy, the things you want in life. Do it now. Your chance may not come again. A wise man once told me to never worry about the things you can’t change. Instead, focus on what you can change. That man is my husband, Daniel, whom I have known for 42 years. He is my biggest supporter in life. With him, I have learned that love can be a fairytale, but it can also be the hardest job outside of motherhood. Trust, faith and forgiveness are necessary in any successful marriage. Without them, marriage will fail and you will miss out on the joy of sharing your life with your best friend.” JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/LA KE M UR R AY

Jen Roberson is a full-time portrait photographer located in Columbia, SC. Since she believes that no one is inherently "photogenic", she loves helping women heal their relationship with the camera by unlocking their internal beauty and showing it back to them. Over the coming months, Lake Murray Lifestyle is excited to introduce you to some of the other participants of the project from last year. Jen's also excited to be doing the Fabulous over 50 project again in 2022 and is looking for more ladies to feature. LOSING WEIGHT WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA OBESITY SURGERY CENTER John Cuttino operates his family’s 700-acre timber farm in Orangeburg County. These days, life on the farm is better than ever. That’s because John has lost nearly 200 pounds after having weight-loss surgery at South Carolina Obesity Surgery Center at Lexington Medical Center. At age 25, John says he finally feels healthy. John’s weight crept up in his early 20s. “I had a career where I spent the majority of my time either behind a desk or behind the wheel of a car. It was a sedentary and fast-food driven lifestyle,” he said. “Ultimately, I weighed 400 pounds in the blink of an eye.” John’s weight impacted his life greatly. “In my early 20s, my friends went to Carowinds, but I couldn’t go because I was way over the weight limit for the rides. I also couldn’t waterski because the boat wasn’t strong enough to pull me. Emotionally, it added up,” John said. The turning point was when John went to the doctor for a checkup. “They told me I was prediabetic. I said, ‘We’re not going down this road. I will find a way to lose this weight and keep it off.’” After a lot of research, John visited South Carolina Obesity Surgery Center in West Columbia. He met the team there, which included a dietitian, psychologist, and physicians. “They were extremely interested in everything about me, what got me to this point, and what I could feasibly change in my life,” he said. “They were a team dedicated to helping me figure out every part of the new lifestyle I needed to create and make it a reality.” The clinicians gave John a full nutrition plan, then discussed surgery as an additional option. “I was trying to get the weight off on my own. I lost 60 pounds, but the rest wasn’t going anywhere. And I was still prediabetic. That’s when I decided to go with surgery.”

34

O PE N H OU SE | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

John underwent a sleeve gastrectomy at Lexington Medical Center in May 2020. During that procedure, surgeons reduce the stomach to about 15 percent of its original size. After surgery, John continued to meet with the team at the South Carolina Obesity Surgery Center. They redefined his perspective on food, taught him to eat a high-protein diet, and become more active by walking a few miles a day. “With farming, I have to make sure that every time I eat, it’s centered around protein. I also drink a gallon of water a day.” John sets a timer on his phone to remind him when he needs to drink more water. “Before the surgery, when I ate way too much fast food, I was still hungry all of the time – and I kept eating. I now know that’s because my body craved nutrients, not food. I did a lot of re-learning about what food actually is.” Eighteen months after the surgery, John weighed 210 pounds. He lost nearly half of his body weight. And he’s no longer prediabetic. “When I wake up now, my knees and back don’t hurt. I’m no longer out of breath trying to do what should be simple, routine things,” he said. “And I have overall energy now that I’ve never had before. I feel my age – 25. I used to feel 60.” Importantly, John points out that bariatric surgery is just a tool to change your life. The rest of the work is up to him. He needs to maintain a healthy diet to not regain the weight back. “If you’ve ever felt your weight was an obstacle to your happiness and quality of life, and if you want to make a change, go talk to them. It’s been an easy and painless journey. And I’m thankful for that.”

John’s Daily Menu

Breakfast • 1 cup of decaffeinated coffee. (Why decaf? Caffeine dehydrates the body and makes it more difficult to maintain water intake.) • 1 sunny-side-up egg • 2 slices of bacon

The Skinny on Healthy Living in the New Year Lunch • Tuna fish with lettuce, cranberries, cracked black pepper and olive oil on flatbread

You might be heading into 2022 trying to lose the pounds we’ve gained over the last two years. Kay MacKinnis, RDN, LD, dietician and diabetes care and education specialist at Lexington Medical Center, offers five tips for success.

1. Set realistic goals.

Snacks • Fruit and nut bar • Trail mix • Beef jerky

We often set the bar high for weight loss. Instead, make your goals “SMART:” Specific, Measurable, Achievable or Attainable, Relevant and Timely. Once you reach a goal, set a new one.

2. Practice moderation.

Don’t change everything at once. Focus on healthy food choices such as more colorful options, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, dried beans and legumes, and lean protein. Eat less processed food. Keep foods as close to the real thing as possible. Begin a plant-based diet.

3. Add water. Dinner • 1/2 large chicken breast • Steamed broccoli or Brussels sprouts

36

O PE N H OU SE | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Drink water between meals and avoid sugared or artificially sweetened beverages.

4. Use your plate as a map.

Fill half of the plate with colorful vegetables, a quarter of the plate with lean protein, and a quarter of the plate with healthy carbohydrates.

5. Build exercise into each day.

The more routine it becomes, the easier it will be.

The Parkinson’s Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. enhance their quality of life by lessening the disease’s symptoms. In this gym, exercises are largely adapted from boxing drills. Boxers condition for optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork and overall strength to defend against and overcome opponents. At Rock Steady Boxing, Parkinson’s disease is the opponent. Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant. Discover more at rocksteadyboxing.org.
